Hey everyone, this global internet thingy is mighty great, but what about instead of worrying about people on the other side of the planet that we have never met, checking the needs our own human neighbours (whatever creed, gender, skin colour).

Because the U.S. government is directly complicit on the deaths of 1,980 Palestinians and the wounding of over 10,000. Not only do we send billions of dollars in military aid to Israel, we also provide them with the F-16s and bombs that incinerate and shred the bodies of thousands innocent civilians.
The U.S. has also vetoed 42 U.N. resolutions in order to shield Israel from world criticism for their egregious actions. U.S. politicians enable the occupation and slaughter with their demonstrated subservience to the Israel lobby. Hillary Clinton is a prime of example of that. She’s so in the bag for Israel that it’s almost impossible to distinguish her words from Benjamin Netanyahu’s. That’s the reason Glenn posted the quiz, i.e., to show the degree to which Israel has successfully corrupted U.S. politicians.
You’re on the other side of the planet from me, but I know your name, and I also know that one of your needs is to get your head out of your ass and realize that we’re ALL each others’ neighbours. The only reason that anyone is complaining about the deaths of these arabs is because Jews are involved. The entire world, especially Arabs, put little value on the lives of arabs. The lives of arab women have zero value except as property. One a-sexual american once said that sex is like having someone else blow your nose for you. This is pretty much how Arab culture views women, as something to use for the sexual equivelant of blowing a mans nose. But women are the source of life in the civilized world. So you have a culture whose highest goal is death, does not see women as anything more than a mans property to be used and discarded when it no longer pleases him, does not invent or create anything and very well knows the lives of its members have a value of just above zero. When Arabs are killing each other at a rate of over 200 per day for over three years as in Syria, no one cares. Add in Iraq at 300 per week, and Libya at — well whose counting any more? And nobody cares. Because Arabs killing Arabs is not news. It is what they do. And recently, as of July 29, 2014 the death rate has been over 300 per day.
Since the people complaining hate Jews so much how about if you hate us so much you can Join the BDS movement. You can start by refusing to use anything that uses, as the nazis called it, Jewish science. Give up your cell phones and computers, and go live in a cave.

Netanyahu’s early claim of Hamas complicity because of a purported statement that the kidnapping of the three teenagers was a good for Hamas is like saying that Netanyahu was complicit in 911 because of his purported statement that 911 was hood for Israel.
I have always thought that the rocketing by Hamas after a long.period of calm was in retaliation for the unilateral and oppressive presumption of guilt of Palestinians by Israel for the abduction and death of 3 teenagers and the IDF’s attack on and destruction of Palestinian homes and wrongful imprisonment of Palestinians including purported members of Hamas. The Israelis have a right of self defense but the Arabs do not. Hillary will appease the aggressor .
No surprises here on Clinton. She will say what she thinks people will want to hear. It has nothing to do with the truth or what is right. A woman who was caught lying in the past, claims to be broke and now has a beady eye on he presidency. Lying, of course, is political trait, so I should be even handed. She has a better idea about the world outside the US and, unlike Mitt Romney, probably knows that Iran does not have to go through Syria to get to the sea. Her understanding about the Middle East is poor, but that doesn’t matter, the voters she will appeal to know little about what has really been going on there courtesy of a mainstream media that paints an inaccurate picture.
I scored 12, because I gave them all to Hillary before falling asleep at number 13. But Netanyahu’s language seems more terse and bullish.

Sorry, they’re far too boring. They have a few inspired bits of literature (some borrowed from a polytheist past, like the Song of Songs), but much is terminally dull. If Israel suffers a backlash because of the all this recent killing, a backlash in the US Media, then you will see Ms. Clinton step back. I want to mention Libya and why she does not need to be President. She and Samanatha Power made the case for invading Libya to President Obama. Libya’s destabiliazation has led to chaos in many places such as Mali, Libya itself, and also Syria. It is know for a fact that the conflict in Syria has been fueled by weapons grabbed from Libya. There is also the death of a US Ambassador and the exposure of classified operations. She has no business making decisions that will touch the lives of people across the world. If you watch the video where she laughs about Qadaffi’s death, then you can see she truly is a sadistic monster. She is not a human being. President Obama, on the other hand, despite all the tricks and all the misleading remarks he makes, is qualified to lead the country. He is a politician, but at least he has some real values. I hope he remembers the knife sticking in his back, and I hope he helps make sure Lady Macbeth does not lead the US into another disasterous war somewhere such as Iran.

That comment by Netanyahu about legitimate military targets is not only hypocritical, it’s obscenely disingenuous in the extreme. He’s a liar. They deliberately target children, period. In the Miko Peled talk linked to, pay close attention to it at 42:30 and for a few minutes after, about the start of the carpet bombing mission against Gaza in 2008 and when they timed it. What Peled calls “the most shameful day in the Jewish history”.
But again, watch it all and pay close attention to it all. It’s the history, going all the way back, of Jews and particularly of Zionism. And for Israel, it’s a history of lies.
Going back to Hilary for a minute, this University of Wisconsin mathematician, using what he coined as the “Hawking Index”, showed that most people who purchase best selling non fiction political books don’t tend to read much of them. But Hilary apparently was especially scintillating. He calculated that those who bought her best seller about herself read, on average, about 2% of the book.
God help the world if she’s elected. Liz Warren is of the same system – you can stick a fork in her too, along with Bernie Sanders (just check out their comments on Israel) – but at least she’s not like fingernails on a blackboard every time she opens her mouth. Abdulrahman admits that he had left Syria over 10 years ago, has lived in Britain ever since, and will not return until “al-Assad goes.”
Of course, beyond this single article, Reuters and its fellow news agencies are sure to never again remind readers of these facts.

I would concede that based on that story, he is not much of a source (it will be interesting what comes out about in the future). But there are a couple of points worth mentioning.
The first is he seems level headed supporting the overthrow of the murderer Assad. In my mind, that gives him some credibility. The fact that he supports the rebels who were forced to take up arms after the democratic movement was crushed by the Assad regime – with hundreds murdered.

Acknowledged that one can offer various retorts, at this point, to the effect that Democrats and America basically got a Clinton presidency anyway, in many ways. And that, to the extent it wasn’t official, that bit seems only to have been placed on hold rather than genuinely pre-empted, because here we are several years later and the chattering classes are certain once again that Hillary is “inevitable.”
All this said, there’s simply no reason to take them seriously now, to the extent that there was ever one in the first place. Political speculation is largely just noise, the equivalent of the ESPN brain trust yelling at one another to fill airtime. The only reason I can think of to pay it any attention at all is the possibility that it becomes self-fulfilling, but again, Hillary’s last outing proves as effectively as anything how easily that balloon can be punctured.
In the end, no one can cram Hillary or anyone else down my throat except other voters. Professional blatherers will get 99% of the words, but voters will get the last word in both the primary and the general election; despite 24/7 fevered speculation that will carry on for years, I don’t think their statement is going to be “Hooray for Hillary” in either case. (I know mine won’t be.)

It’s no different to a bank robber taking a hostage and shuffling out the front door of the bank, hiding behind the terrified hostage with a gun to their head. I understand your point, but I wonder that since Israel owns our Congress, maybe grander megalomania might reside in Netanyahu’s cabinet, or even by her assuming his position. She could still live in the US and simply run the Israeli government jointly while running ours as President here. Joint citizenship is common, why not Joint Presidencies?
It could save a lot of time and carbon credits traveling back and forth for hand shake photo opps and pretend powwows. She could just work out everything all be herself simply by lying to herself in the mirror.

Suddenly dead children appear at the top of every article despite the murder of 10,000 children in Syria over the last three years. Craig, I’ve tried to get you to state this before: What are the criteria for a person to earn the label “far left?”
Perhaps a handy dandy guide is in order? Those deal more with states of mind than specific positions, you will know them when you encounter them by subjective reaction. A person on the “far left” is a person who makes you say “Wow, I admire your magnanimous spirit; however, you seem touchy feeling and I fear you might hug or in some way touch me. Stay right there while I look for a largish object to fend you off with in the event that that happens”.
Someone on the far left authoritarian side, by contrast, is someone who makes you go: “Wow, on the one hand you seem like a scary commie who would happily put dissenters in the gulag and you’re kind of jerk; however, I’m extremely relieved that you are not going to try and hug me, so maybe it’s a wash overall”.
Someone on the far left libertarian side is recognizable because you’ll think: “Wow, you’re pretty dreamy even if I find you unrealistic on most issues that relate to, I don’t know, ‘life’ in ‘the world’. You seem like you’d kind of *get me, y’know? Wait – WHY DON’T YOU GET ME?!” Well, whatever, you still have that kind of James Dean thing going on.

There is always overlap between political philosophies. That’s why it’s difficult to “categorize” people as left, right. libertarian, moderate, radical left, extreme right, fascist, etc. None the less, it’s a useful exercise. And we all use the “names” to categorize people we might be debating – conservatives, neocons, liberals etc..

Funny man you are – all those points indicate a break out of cognitive dissonance and entry to thinking in terms of the real. You know, or probably you don’t, the art of seeing things as they truly are, and accepting the fact of that stark truth. I can’t decide whether you think very highly of yourself or think very little of the US and Israel to believe that you can define what is anti or pro for a country that is ostensibly a Democracy. How many votes do you think you get? If Israel and the US voted overwhelmingly to condemn your political philosophy by name would these countries now become anti-themselves?
For what it is worth, I find your posts much more interesting when you are arguing for or against ideas, as opposed to arguing who loves more or hates more the nebulous and undefined concepts such as corporations, personal religious beliefs or democracies.
For better or worse we are the reflection of our enemies. If your enemies are embarrassingly one dimensional caricatures barely worthy of ridicule, where does that leave you? That doesn’t seem far off the mark for many on this site – or for Greenwald. It’s a valid term (IMO), but maybe “US and Israel-obsessed” would serve a better purpose. After all, Greenwald has published 26 articles since February 12th this year. Six have been about Israel including five since July 17th. I’m not opposed to articles about Israel’s brutal assault on Gaza, but it’s not the only conflict where people are needlessly being killed. It just is at the Intercept. Will that change? Hopefully, but right now, it doesn’t seem likely.
Aren’t all those things constantly up for a vote in this country? ObamaCare (god I hate that term) is now law. Is everyone who opposes ObamaCare now anti-American?
The term anti-American is anti-Democratic at its core because it presumes that certain beliefs, philosophy, and laws of the US should be unaffected by Democracy. The only innate characteristic of Democracy is Democracy, and we even left that part up to the voters too.
If you wish that the US wasn’t a Democracy, then make that argument openly. Not hidden in language that implies you love this country. (See what I did there:)

I don’t believe that anti Americanism is synonymous with anti democratic. For example, an Egyptian might oppose US policies which helped sustain a dictator (Mubarak), but be pro democracy. Needless to say, no one would blame the Palestinians for being anti American considering our support for Israel, but they could very well be pro democracy. They most certainly must feel the same about Israel’s policies. Most might be proud to be called anti Israel, pro democracy. And of course, the term can apply to anyone, American or not.
At worst, it can be misinterpreted as a method to quiet dissent just like the charges of racism or antisemitism in public debates. For me, it just means obsessively opposed to US (and Israel) policies – and as Josef Joffe says “…….believing the United States to have an irremediably evil nature, ascribing to the U.S. establishment a vast conspiratorial power aimed at utterly dominating the globe, holding the United States responsible for all the evils in the world…..”. I would add to that conspiratorial theories like the US knew about 911 before it happened, created and still support the jihadists (for global domination) and other weird theories advanced by some in the political far left.

There is no position that can be taken that is anti-American because we are a Democracy and we can vote on any and every issue. Suggesting that the laws be changed is not anti-American.
Saying that certain positions can’t be voted for/against because those positions are anti-American makes you anti-Democracy.

Not at all. Presumably, you oppose US support for dictators because you support the civil liberties, civil rights and humans rights of the people living under that dictatorship. Opposing US policies makes sense if you want to advance democracy where the US for geopolitical reasons supports a dictatorship (like Mubarak). But, I don’t believe that to be the case when many oppose US policies. The obsessively anti-American (and anti-Israel) “fringe” left focuses on US policy to the exclusion of the rights of people living under authoritarian rule elsewhere who are supported or propped up by governments like China and Russia (Syria). In other words, the motivation is political and narrowly focused on US policies. The advancement of democracy and human rights is certainly not the objective. Greenwald fits this political model perfectly – and he continues to prove this with his choice of articles.
Do you think that the Palestinian conflict would receive the coverage if it was Russia that supported and armed Israel? In that respect, the Palestinians have it really good compared to the Tamil Tigers who were wiped out by the Sri Lankan government without much fanfare. Hamas going to war with Israel is largely to draw upon that unique international “outrage” caused by the the IP conflict.

Most of those points are circumstantial, not descriptive of an ideology. In the abstract, if the US and Israel didn’t exist, what would your list look like?

I think everything else derives from the above list, which is mostly right. Anti-corporation is probably not accurate. I’d describe it as opposition to abuses of power, such as worker exploitation, and generally siding with the weak in conflicts with the powerful. In any case, no one should be ashamed of having these views.
By definition, if you’re anti-imperialist, you’ll come off as anti-American. If you’re anti-colonialist, you’ll necessarily come off as anti-Israel, and so forth.

As Americans, we are complicit in Israel’s slaughter of Gazans. They do this w/ our bombs and other military materials, and with our public support.
Is there a Congo Lobby in the U.S. dispensing $$ to politicians like Sheldon Adelson and AIPAC do?
Did the U.S. hugely arm the side committing the slaughter in the Congo?
Is his position on the Congo an enormous factor in whether a nominee for Secretary of Defense can be confirmed by the U.S. Senate?
Are American university professors fired for their tweets about affairs in the Congo?
Does the Congolese government hold itself out as a liberal Western democracy?
Ponder the answers to these questions, Craig, and the reason Israel, rather than the Congo, is singled out for Western condemnation when it oppresses and slaughters people might become clear.

This goes a little deeper than you are willing to admit. If the US didn’t support Israel, no one would care what happened to the Palestinians. Indeed, it might be Russia supporting Israel – like in Syria and the Ukraine. Syria is a classic example, but the war in Sri Lanka proved that beyond a shadow of a doubt. Tens of thousands of people were killed in that conflict which garnered little world-wide attention. The Tamil Tigers were literally wiped out. They made their last stand in a city which caused the death of an untold amount of civilians.

The reason they received little media attention was because there was not an Exxon oil rig set up off shore. As in Sudan, if China was importing oil from Sri Lanka, there would have been little criticism. There are also other interesting developments like some South American countries have taken a stand against Israel. Evo Morales called the attacks in Gaza “genocide”. Much of the opposition comes from “leftist” governments who (rightly) resented US meddling (and worse) in their internal affairs during the cold war. Obviously Cuba and Venezuela have carried that banner. To my knowledge, they didn’t speak up when the Tamil Tigers were being wiped out.
In addition, the Euro-left has also been extremely vocal, and they really have little stake in the war. Extreme anti Israeli activists are represented in the media, academia and political parties in Europe. Again, their resentment is driven by US and Israel policies in tandem. José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero – the former Socialist Prime Minister of Spain – made a bigoted comment about Jews:

So there is a world-wide resentment driven by the US-Israel alliance which drives the debate and “outrage” over the attack in Gaza. So it’s not simply a matter of “we are complicit” (or even related).
The Palestinians are being prevented from their right to self-determination. They clearly need a state free of Israeli influence (although that might require a wall all the way around Israel). Israel needs to get out of the West Bank. I support all of those objectives, but while Hamas is a part of the Palestinian government, they will not be easy to achieve.

Craig, first of all, I couldn’t respond to your comment without looking up who the Tamil Tigers are, or were. What superficial understanding I now I have of that conflict comes from a Wikipedia page, at the top of which there is the warning it has multiple issues and the neutrality of many points is disputed. However, I sifted through most of the article to learn that the Tamils were an ethnic minority in Sri Lanka that was systematically persecuted by the Sinhalese majority, had their citizenship rights removed, were ethnically cleansed and deported to mainland India by the thousands, and then the remaining Tamils, only 5% of the population by that point, became radicalized and militant, and transmuted into the Tamil Tiger terrorists. Okay. So far, so good. I see the analogy, though maybe I’m perceiving the facts selectively and it’s not exactly the analogy you were trying to make. If your point is that the conflict in Sri Lanka proved it is possible to rout out a terrorist force by military force, and that you are then going on to suggest that this justifies the way Israel is conducting the war in Gaza, then you just lost me. Because, if everything I’m reading is any indication, internal support for Hamas is growing by leaps and bounds in Gaza. 2000 people may have lost their lives in this last phase of the war, but there’s still approximately 1.3M survivors, and they are hurting. And they are pissed. And not at Hamas. Amira Hass wrote a recent article in Haaretz about how Israel was essentially midwifing a whole new generation of little terrorists in Gaza, and I think there’s some truth to that. (I hope she’s not going to have to get a bodyguard like Gideon Levy) If your point is that the worldwide media scrutiny and criticism of Israel is preventing it from finishing the job it started, ahh, I think that’s kind of a scary thing to say. Because now your getting into the realm of Moshe Feiglin thinking. I mean, if you are saying the IDF is practicing restraint in Gaza now, I would hate to see them take the gloves off.
You assert that if the United Sates wasn’t supporting Israel, then maybe Russia would be. Maybe that’s true, and if it is, I don’t have the political acumen to understand what the significance of that is or what it means. That’s a bit beyond my ken. But as far as Exxon goes, I think you’re muddying the waters there. To the best of my knowledge there are no oil prospects at play in this particular region of the ME. I don’t think the US government is protecting oil in this conflict, I think all the various elected officials are protecting the futures of their careers by not pissing off AIPAC.
There are terrible things happening in the world today, and I do know this, and it’s heartbreaking. What’s happening in the Congo is heartbreaking. And in Sierra Leone, and in Nigeria. And for that matter, to the Yazidis trapped on Mount Sinjar by ISIS and facing genocide. Arguably, the Yazidis wouldn’t be facing extermination now if we hadn’t got rid of Saddam Hussein, because ISIS is what stepped into the vacuum after Saddam went away. So we’re probably indirectly responsible for the plight of the Yazidis. It would be nice to save everyone who needs saving, but I don’t think that’s possible. And more to the point, it seems like most of the times we try, we usually fuck up and make it worse. It’s the blow back. As far as Gaza goes, I’m not even saying we should save the children of Gaza, but at least we could stop subsidizing their destruction. I mean an additional $225M in “emergency funds” to Israel for reinforcing the iron dome? Passed unanimously in the House? Israel is the one having an emergency?
What Zapatero said is reprehensible. But members of the Knesset are making public comments that aren’t very much different.
Finally, we agree on a lot of things in your last paragraph, but diverge in a couple of places. For example, the Wall. There already is one, and they put it up in 2005 after the settlements were pulled out of Gaza, and apparently because of ensuing suicide bomber attacks. OK. The problem is, as I have read elsewhere but can’t cite sources off the top of my head, that was when the extremism and racism in Israel started to grow. One writer argued persuasively that after the wall cut off contact between the majority of the two populations, there was less social intercourse and the possibility of fostering understanding empathy and tolerance. Leading up to what we have now. I think a bigger wall would make it worse.
Regarding Hamas, I think their charter is a piece of shit that should be scrapped and re-imagined entirely. Khaled Mashal calls it “a piece of history” that’s no longer relavant, but which can’t be changed for “internal reasons.” I think that’s bullshit. But I don’t know if Hamas will go away, because I think Israel keeps inadvertently propping them up. But if Hamas is going to stay, then it needs to evolve, rapidly and dramatically, if it wants to continue representing the interests of the Palestinian people. I did read some quote recently from some British politician, who said rapid progress was made when he started negotiating with the IRA, instead of treating them like terrorists.

Just one point: The US (rightly) draws a lot of political criticism because of our role in the world which has been abusive at times. Thus , in my opinion, it’s US support of Israel which is driving the criticism of Israel. That’s why I mentioned that if the US was importing oil from Sri Lanka or supplying lots of weapons to the government, the world would have condemned the eradication of the Tamil Tigers (if for nothing else, the amount of civilians killed). Interestingly enough, the Tamils could not conjure up any support for their cause, partly because it occurred during Operation Cast Lead. No one cared. Thousands of civilians were killed without any significant international criticism. The Tamil Tigers lost the war of propaganda. The Palestinians are winning that same war.
There would be too much of an international outcry (including from the US) if Israel tried to wipe out Hamas.

I can’t get over the depravity of that comment. Of course, the direct implication of her statement is that the more grotesque and heart wrenching the massacre, the less justification one has to assign blame. Equally puzzling is the international investigation team’s apparent snail’s pace at requesting for the tapes from Ukrainian ATC.
Three weeks into the tragedy and the Ukrainians have yet to receive any formal request for the tapes.
Yesterday, when asked, Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail said Malaysia would make a formal request for the ATC recordings.

She may not agree straight down the line with Netanyahu, but even in Israel, there is a diversity of political parties and points of view, so she should be granted some latitude.

Certainly the fact that Zionist Israel literally invaded Palestine and illegally took land, while simultaneously murdering the indigenous population, should be considered in sentencing the Israeli leaders and allies for repeated war and humanitarian crimes.

This platitude is absurd and makes me want to break stuff. Israel DOES have the right to defend itself just like any other country or person in the world. As a rule of thumb, if a sentence leads with this trite conditional, you are about to hear an attempt to jusify something that is not justifiable.
Regardless of whether or not Hamas used its civilans as human cannon fodder (a claim that has not been supported by any strong evidence), Israel has no excuse for killing so many civilians. The UN estimates that 72% of the deaths were civilians, of which nearly a half were women and children. That is a disgrace considering the poverty in Gaza and how they are essentially trapped in a box. Israel can justify their actions all they want, but at the end of the day people will remember the death toll and distribution, and realize that civiliants – not Hamas – paid the price for Hamas’ actions.
I do believe that the Obama Administration is more careful in avoiding civilian deaths than his predecessors but it is not enough. With all the advances in technology we have should require a commensurate level of evidence to launch Hellfire missiles, and not at freaking wedding convoys. However, I don’t recall (correct me if I’m wrong) Israel characterizing its strikes on civilians as “mistakes.” Clinton is just making excuses.

I disagree with Goldberg’s question. I think there has been less publicity and backlash this time around. I read an Economist article that I think summed up the reason (I paraphrase): With all the conflicts and tragedy in the middle east, the latest incident in Israel has been met with “compassion fatigue.”

I can’t get over the depravity of that comment. Of course, the direct implication of her statement is that the more grotesque and heart wrenching the massacre, the less justification one has to assign blame. I think Chomsky is referring to a study that found only the top 10% most wealthy in the US have true political influence. In other words, it may appear that the general population has political influence on issues, but that’s only when it comes to issues where the general population is in agreement with the top 10%. Whenever they are in disagreement, the top 10% typically wins in congressional voting.

Hillary has simply well-learned the lesson of American presidential-election politics that was first impressed upon Harry Truman: Because Jewish-American voters in general have since 1948 made support for Israel the cost of their vote, successful candidates pay that price.
