Hillary Clinton is relying on support from black voters to help her carry South Carolina in the Democratic primary on Saturday, but at a fundraiser in Charleston on Wednesday night, she found herself confronted by a young black activist demanding an apology.
As video of the protest shows, the activist, Ashley Williams, interrupted Clinton’s remarks about criminal justice at the private event by unfurling a banner with the phrase “we have to bring them to heel.” Those words — language that has been taken as an offensive and racist characterization of young black teens as unruly animals — were used by the former first lady at a campaign rally for Bill Clinton in New Hampshire in January 1996.
Williams demanded that Clinton apologize for those words and for using racially charged language suggesting that the nation was threatened by a generation of young “superpredators.”
After Clinton took note of the banner, Williams said, “I’m not a superpredator, Hillary Clinton. Will you apologize to black people for mass incarceration?”
As the small, mainly white crowd of donors hissed, and a man tried to get the activist to put her banner away, Clinton responded by referring to a speech she gave last April in which she deplored the killing of unarmed black men and boys by police officers and called for an “end to the era of mass incarceration.” Williams, however, pressed her demand for an apology, saying, “You called black people predators.”
As Williams was led away, Clinton claimed that this was the first time she had been asked to explain her 1996 comments, which have been widely shared online in recent months. “You know what, nobody’s ever asked me before, you’re the first person that’s ever asked me, and I’m happy to address it,” she said.
But just seconds later, as the activist was bundled out the door, Clinton brushed off the exchange, saying, “OK, back to the issues.”
Video of the exchange, posted on a YouTube channel called #NotASuperpredator and featured on the Huffington Post, was viewed more than 100,000 times by Thursday afternoon, prompting the Clinton campaign to tell reporters that her words had been taken out of context, and referred not to at-risk, black teens, but to drug gangs exploiting kids.
C-Span video of her speech on January 28, 1996, reveals that Clinton was indeed talking about the need to tackle gangs, but it is not hard to understand why activists like Williams might agree with Michelle Alexander, the author of The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness, who called her language “racially coded rhetoric” in a widely read article in The Nation.
Touting the success of the 1994 crime bill signed into law by her husband, Clinton said in the speech that in addition to putting more police officers on the streets:
We also have to have an organized effort against gangs, just as in a previous generation we had an organized effort against the mob. We need to take these people on, they are often connected to big drug cartels, they are not just gangs of kids anymore. They are often the kinds of kids who are called superpredators. No conscience. No empathy. We can talk about why they ended up that way but first we have to bring them to heel. And the president has asked the FBI to launch a very concerted effort against gangs everywhere. In addition to that, he has appointed a new drug czar.
In those remarks, Clinton appeared to endorse the subsequently discredited theory that American cities were threatened by a swelling wave of violent crime from a new generation of young “superpredators.”
That theory, as a New York Times video report shows, was eventually described as wrongheaded and destructive even by the political scientist most associated with the term, John J. DiIulio Jr. — but not before it helped justify a wave of harsh sentencing guidelines for juveniles across the country.
Looking back at the superpredator panic of the 1990s two years ago in the Times, Clyde Haberman explained that it was based on flawed demographic research:
What happened with the superpredator jeremiads is that they proved to be nonsense. They were based on a notion that there would be hordes upon hordes of depraved teenagers resorting to unspeakable brutality, not tethered by conscience. No one in the mid-1990s promoted this theory with greater zeal, or with broader acceptance, than John J. DiIulio Jr., then a political scientist at Princeton. Chaos was upon us, Mr. DiIulio proclaimed back then in scholarly articles and television interviews. The demographics, he said, were inexorable. Politicians from both major parties, though more so on the right, picked up the cry. Many news organizations pounced on these sensational predictions and ran with them like a punt returner finding daylight.
But a funny thing happened on the way to the apocalypse. Instead of exploding, violence by children sharply declined.
On Thursday, Clinton told Jonathan Capehart of the Washington Post that, on reflection, she does now regret her choice of language. “In that speech, I was talking about the impact violent crime and vicious drug cartels were having on communities across the country and the particular danger they posed to children and families,” she said in a statement. “Looking back, I shouldn’t have used those words, and I wouldn’t use them today.”
As our colleague Liliana Segura reported last year, the impact of the criminal justice legislation enacted during Bill Clinton’s time in office is still being felt today by current and former juvenile inmates and their families.
Xavier McElrath-Bey, who grew up amid extreme poverty, abuse, and neglect, and was sentenced to 25 years in prison at the age of 13 for a gang-related murder on Chicago’s South Side, told a conference in Dallas that children like him had been pathologized as intrinsically bad. “We’ve come from a generation that they were saying were ‘superpredators,’” he said. “They said that we were incorrigible, that we were beyond repair. They stated that we were godless, fatherless, heartless monsters. These were professors and researchers who fed the media the hype of an impending flood of juvenile crime that never actually occurred.”
Late Thursday, the activist who confronted Clinton posted a statement on Twitter rejecting the candidate’s apology as insufficient.
In a video interview with USUncut, Williams told Nathan Wellman and Winnie Wong, a co-founder of People For Bernie, “I wanted her to apologize to black people and other people of color who have been affected by mass incarceration in a very real material way. And I also wanted her to take responsibility for the ways in which she was complicit in those things.”
Williams added that her doubts about Clinton were also motivated by “inappropriate comments” about President Obama “being a black person running for President,” during their battle for the 2008 Democratic nomination.

Just to bring everyone back to today’s reality, if only for a moment:
The Real Clear Politics listings (and averages) for the Democratic primary in South Carolina (with margins of error for individual polls) are here.
Clearly, the video of Hillary citing the term “Super-predators” had to be considered in context to the ideas that framed it. In this instance, Hillary was referring to the behavior of “gang members” specifically; in that narrow context she was right. Black gang members very often behave as if they are “godless, fatherless, heartless monsters.” It is not racist to say that this is so. This having been said, I agree that Hillary was deliberately invoking a meme that was supercharged with rhetorical weight to advance her own selfish political ends.
Those of us who are a bit long in the tooth can recall the late 1960s when the flow of LSD began to dry up and crystal meth was first being widely introduced to the anti-war youth (hippie) culture. It wasn’t long before before methamphetamine was linked to the violent death of a “black man” by the Hell’s Angels at a 1969 Altamont free concert that featured the Rolling Stones. Within a day of that drug related death, a local radio station characterized the episode as the conclusion of late-1960s American youth culture. This characterization was picked up on the news wire and distributed around the country in a way where it invariably became a meme. Unbeknownst to the American people at that time was that there was a secret political war being waged by cointelpro against the anti-war counterculture at that time.
First hand accounts of the “murder and mayhem” at Altamont were aired live by Stefan Ponek of KSAN FM 95 less than 24 hours later, on December 7, 1969; KSAN was known for its innovative, progressive format at that time:
At the time that Ponek delivered that iconic requiem for the 60s generation, Multimedia’s KSAN FM 95 radio station was owned and operated by John Kluge, a man who would later be named as the richest man in the world by Forbes Magazine. Prior to becoming the largest owner of independent media in America, Kluge served in the military with the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) as an interpreter at a secret internment facility named PO Box 1142. That post was one of a number of secret internment facilities commissioned by the United States with the goal to exploit the German scientists recruited as part of Operation Paperclip in Europe. Among those Nazi scientists who were secretly brought to America, there were scores of psychiatric doctors and researchers who participated in various aspects of MKUltra mind control experiments. It was MKUltra research that first covertly introduced LSD to the American counter culture through pop icons like Timothy Leary and Ken Kesey. The largest distributor of LSD in the US in 1969, Augustus Owsley, Stanley III walked in the same social circles as Leary and Kesey. The Hell’s Angels were the largest distributor of Owsley Acid at the time.
Although the introduction of methamphetamine into the 60s counter-culture is commonly attributed to Augustus Owsley, Stanley III, Ronald Hadley Stark was far more instrumental in its wide scale production and distribution. “When Stark (who is believed to have distributed an estimated 50 million doses of LSD during his Agency career) was arrested for drug trafficking in Bologna in 1975, Italian magistrate Giorgio Floridia ordered his release on the grounds that he had been a CIA agent since 1960. Judge Floridia documented and justified this using a list of Stark’s numerous intelligence contacts.”(Search for the Manchurian Candidate; Marks, John D). At the time that Meredith Hunter’s Altimont death was being tied to methamphetamine consumption, the Hell’s Angels were Stark’s chief US distributor. Although the Hell’s Angels were hired to provide security at that free Altamont concert, they were tied to the distribution of methamphetamine and LSD that was being widely consumed by its participants.
In the 1980s, a similar scenario unfolded whereby the black liberation movement was incrementally robbed of a lot of its political will and momentum when cocaine flowing in from central America was directed into Black Urban Hubs around the country. The proceeds from cocaine trafficking was being covertly facilitated by the CIA and used to fund an illegal insurgency (terror) campaign in Nicaragua. The majority of this cocaine was being transported by Barry Seal and was coming in through Mena, Arkansas while William Jefferson Clinton was “making his bones” as a Wall Street funded governor. Hillary’s statements concerning “super predators” from “drug trafficking gangs” are far more revealing when one actually understands how politically culpable the Clintons are for the Drug epidemic that swept through the African America community directly under their powder stained noses. Reporter Gary Webb of the San Jose Mercury News was ultimately suicided for writing a series of articles entitled “Dark Alliance” wherein he claimed that the Clinton’s were knowing participants in that trafficking of cocaine.
Look, I dislike HRC, and think she’s an establishment, neo-con hack, but taking her to task for what she said 22 years ago in one speech is a bit ridiculous. There’s plenty to slam her for, but this isn’t it.
Ta-Nehesi Coates would disagree – he mentioned this statement specifically as mattering to him both at the time and now, when he said he planned to vote for Sanders earlier this month.
It seems that the black voters in South Carolina made a calculated decision to have a powerful representative of Wall St. on their side. Wall St. runs the US, so if you are a member of a marginalized community, you spurn them at your own peril. It’s one thing for a young college student with a bright future (comparatively speaking) to indulge in a show of rebellion. But for a community that must struggle just to survive, the admonitions that Mrs. Clinton was a creature of the financial elite, must have been music to their ears.
It seems that many pundits miss the fundamental point that when people grow desperate, they yearn for a powerful leader. Trump will easily clinch the Republican nomination, fueled by the frustrations of white working class voters. Clinton will easily clinch the Democratic nomination, fueled by the fears of minority voters. Mrs. Clinton must resist the temptation to contrast herself with Mr. Trump as being more caring or moderate. The final winner will be the candidate who succeeds in projecting the most power.
That should be Mrs. Clinton. Her banking paymasters need to immediately call back all loans to Mr. Trump’s businesses and force them into bankruptcy. That will shatter Trump’s image of invincibility and lead to a Clinton landslide.
“a young college student with a bright future (comparatively speaking) to indulge in a show of rebellion”
Apparently you don’t know many recent college graduates. I do. I have to scramble to beat them to $10/hr mental health worker relief shifts. The only advantage I have over their younger energy is (1) I am very reliable, and (2) I don’t play with a smart phone for half a shift. I also go to the local community college, and I sense a lack of hope for the future, and see them drowning in debt already. So I would not assume, and they do not seem to assume, a bright future. Quite the contrary, and more of the same (Clinton) is not a good sign for them.
$10/hr is a bright future (comparatively speaking). I didn’t mean to imply the expectations of students were wildly unrealistic.
My theory is that the world is transitioning to a much less labor intensive economy. This Utopian dream means that most people will spend their lives in prison, since how else can you ensure they won’t consume the resources which belong to the global elite? I think that Mrs. Clinton would be in favor of more comfortable prisons than Mr. Trump.
And yet, Hillary still managed to be believed by most of South Carolina’s democrats. A shame. A really sad outcome, from my view. Even though she has completely changed her positions on most all topics, due to the more open minded views from Mr. Sanders, she remains a golden light to the people of South Carolina, and what is even more startling, is that Representative Clyburn, a man I used to hold in fairly high regard, came out in righteous support of this woman, too. No logic in it, just a long time loyalty. Habit is a very hard thing to combat.
Hillary is expected to win by a large margin is South Carolina, 65% of which is African American. Black South Carolinians says she knows them and understands what they are going through, which is extreme poverty and a dearth of opportunity. She will take care of them, they say. That’s what an elderly woman declared regarding Hillary on NPR. I thought how ironic it is that these people want to put another Clinton in office after all she and Bill have done to them in the way of incarceration, welfare, social services, education, financial security, military aggression, employment, and justice. If Bernie could reach SC voters in time they might change their minds about sending the Clintons back to the White House. Haven’t South Carolinians endured enough misery for one lifetime?
Imagine being a kid growing up with that
I sometimes get a bit worried by various minority groups fighting for “equal rights” when the people they desire to be equal with are so obviously corrupted and despicable. Black folks can be unpleasant, greed-driven, selfish and morally bankrupt, too. The political language coming out of America is all too often selfishly motivated or missing the real point that huge social change is required throughout its society, its political institutions, its corporations, and its dealings with foreigners.
What is the point in getting Clinton to apologise for one possible albeit major slight when everything she represents is so utterly odious?

2. HILLARY IS SAVED BY MONICA, says a newspaper reporting on the Whitewater Prosecutors criminal case files.
The article said prosecutors dropped their Whitewater criminal case, in order to work on the newly developing Monicagate, in which Big Bill was suspended 5 years from practicing law, fined $90,000 for false testimony and contempt of court, and subjected to impeachment proceedings. There was no follow up on the Whitewater case.
But the prosecutors recently released detailed case notes show they wanted to prosecute and clearly spells out many specific reasons why they definitely smelled corruption, if not collusive cover up in their Clinton Whitewater case files. They did not think well of both Clintons character and behavior.
Honest Hillary loyalists, will continue to backpedal that, no prosecution means no evidence. So this is just another childrens bedtime horror / fantasy story. Yes, this is just a mere nothing.
Some say, Hillary has a pact with Lady Lucks Super Pac at her side, as in coin tosses and such.
What do you think?
o Is she wrapped in warm sunlight, mysterious fog, or in volcanic ashes?
o Is she enveloped by the white of pure snow, or the shadows of the dark side?
o Is she in the nature of the Jedi Knights, or of the Sith Lords?
o Are you proud of her ability to get things done?
o Are you proud of her?
o Will you let her manage your finances? Be your banker? Negotiate a contract for you?

I never really understood what a psychopath was until following Hillary this campaign.
congratulations on your realization
Someone would have to be very hard pressed to defend or excuse, the lack of internal instinct to feel and say the word “kids”(Children) AND assign to (THEM) the mind- image of a Super (Extreme) Predator ( Hunts, or preys upon), with NO conscience (Awareness of right and wrong) NO empathy (Feeling; intellectual or emotional identification with another).
Really? Children who don’t have feelings for others and who hunt or pret upon others?
It gets worse…”We can talk about why they ended up that way” What? How? are they products of their environment? raised that way? Victims of being poor and subjected to powerful drug pushers?
Has she not considered this? Is it not important enough to speak about this?
Surly, these are Human youth she is condemning- does SHE have any Empathy? she goes straight to “First we have to bring them (Human youth) to HEEL” (Fallow along at the heels of someone- primarily used in reference to a trained dog behavior). Wow! that is ugly-harsh.
Think for a moment about if that would have been what you said about this issue. ?
Now, think about it in the context of what you PREPARED and PLANED to say for a LEADERSHIP statement?
Hmmm.
Honestly, as a mother, daughter and human- I would have first thought of the word HEAL as a desperately needed solution.
Sometimes, there is no way to NOT look at an entire group of individual snap-shots of a persons speech and actions over a period of time, and get not see the whole picture.
So, putting that, and what happened THEN, aside for a moment, let’s look at what happened when it was directly questioned NOW, by someone who had a right to want an explanation.
This young woman did not yell or act aggressively in any way. I feel confident in assuming that she was in fact invited and welcomed to be there, or she would not have been.
Let’s start by asking ourselves, what would we have done if confronted with something that we said that was offensive or hurtful to another person, and they wanted an explanation.?
Hmmm… On the spot reaction. With others watching.
I guess it would have to come down to how you really felt about what you had said, and if the priority was to express your feelings honestly, or make sure you don’t look bad with whatever you do say.
It is a choice, and it had to made within a matter of seconds.
OK, so maybe you have thought about what you might do, and weighed what you think Mrs. Clinton might have been thinking, and possibly could or should have done.
Here is what she did and did not do.
1) She did not display strong feelings of compassion to the needs of the young person (acting “appropriately” or not.
2) She did get defensive.
3) She did not offer an explanation, or express that she acknowledged understanding of why it might be a legitimate concern to the questioner, since she obviously was demonstrating it, and Mrs. Clinton is running for president and invited people to vet her.
4) She said that she had NEVER been asked this question In 20 years. (is she questioning our intelligence?
5) She did allow others to escort the questioner out of the room without a communication moment of explanation, expression of personal responsibility to provide an answer or mutual closure with acknowledgement of the right of the question to be presented.
6) She did not imitatively respond to her fund raising audience the significance of what had just happened in front of them and went on “back to the issues”.
Did she not think this was an issue?
Question. Does a persons “true colors” show through after enough time in the spot-light?
Is it important to take a deep look at this when choosing the leader of our country?
I know what I think. I will let you decide for yourself.
“(is she questioning our intelligence?”
In her world, peons aren’t granted intelligence.
Hillary wasn’t the only one whipping up hysteria during the period. The Donald stuck his nose into the 1989 case — google “donald trump central park trial” and you’ll get plenty, e.g.,
http://www.newyorker.com/news/amy-davidson/donald-trump-and-the-central-park-five
Hillary was whipping up a malign talking point of the time, piling it on. The Donald may very well have helped pioneer the hysteria in the long term, and in the short term, helped prejudice the jury and the press coverage in a high-profile case. Donald prejudiced a trial; Hillary and Bill may have put away a generation. Either way, it stinks.

What does it mean that Clinton is running on, away from and against her public record?
What does it mean that Clinton is issuing more apologies for her public record than she is touting successes of her public record?
Most people, which would include the military, know that not all gang members are black.
“According to a recently released FBI report, Gang-related activity in the US military is increasing and poses a threat to law enforcement officials and national security.
The report, Gang Activity in the U.S. Armed Forces Increasing, dated January 12, states that members of nearly every major street gang have been identified on both domestic and international military installations. Members of nearly every major street gang, including the Bloods, Crips, Black Disciples, Gangster Disciples, Hells Angels, Latin Kings, The 18th Street Gang, Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13), Mexican Mafia, Nortenos, Surenos, Vice Lords, and various white supremacist groups, have been documented on military installations.”
http://usmilitary.about.com/od/justicelawlegislation/a/gangs.htm
whoops, this was supposed to be connected to my previous comment on this thread.
Clinton’s arrogance knows no bounds, and it is no surprise that it has once again caused her to open up her mouth and shoot another hole in the foot of her campaign to become the next U.S. dictator. Her racism is evident to all who care to pay attention. Unfortunately, too few care to do just that.
Sanders, for his part, must address the Clintons’ role in the creation and maintenance of the mass incarceration industry that disproportionately affects Blacks and Hispanics—the breaking up of families, the rendering of incarcerated persons as unemployable, the increased poverty—and he needs to hammer home how willing the Clintons were to work with Republican scumbags such as John Kasich who is now also running for dictator.
One thing’s for damn sure: Hillary needs a dresser. Jesus, she takes doudy to a level the Queen can only dream about. That damn green monster she’s wearing in the picture looks like it was made from left over shingle underlay.
C’mon, Hillary, you don’t have to be a model, just pick it up a little, please.
She’s going for the viking warrior look in that green thing.
Yes, whatever we must do to stop violent street crime perpetrated by vicious gangs and individual sociopaths, we must NEVER insult them by calling them what they are, for in doing so, we insult ALL of humanity…
You are known to be a racist, and do not understand — or wish to — how the black community has been decimated by U.S. criminal “justice” and penal policy. The so-called War on Drugs plays a huge role. Demonizing the poor black males who respond rationally to the situation they’ve been placed in is the worst sort of victim-blaming.
You won’t do it, but I suggest you read Michelle Alexander’s book The New Jim Crow to grasp how deeply poor blacks are being failed, including by the Civil Rights establishment.
You are a demonstrated racist in this comments section, one who does not know — or wish to know — how America’s legal and penal schemes have decimated black America. A huge component of that has been the so-called War on Drugs.
To grasp how the black community has been devastated by statutes, judicial decisions, the prison-prosection industry, and abandonment by the elite class — including the establishment Civil Rights movement — you would have to read and digest Michelle Alexander’s book, The New Jim Crow.
You should also view Frontline’s, two-hour special on radical new drug policy in Seattle, where even people selling heroin on the streets are not prosecuted; they are assigned social workers and offered as many resources as are available for help managing their lives. Including, if and when they are ready, treatment. Crime has gone down and addicts are living better lives.
As the show examines, this humane approach did not come in the 90s and naughts when the cops were mostly grabbing legions of young black men off the streets and injecting them into the prison pipeline. It took a heroin epidemic in the middle- and upper-class white community to get this done.
But, you won’t read the book or watch Frontline. But others have and will.
The good Burgers of Seattle had best keep their eyes open. The Drug Warriors will not be amused at their efforts to kill the golden goose. We in Canada were openly threatened with trade restrictions for our lax attitude toward marijuana and our efforts to advance supervised injection sites.
I don’t know why her comment about gangs would be interpreted as only talking about black people as there’s probably every ethnic group in America represented in gangs.
Anyway looks like she addressed it at the Washington Post
“On Thursday, Clinton told Jonathan Capehart of the Washington Post that, on reflection, she does now regret her choice of language. “In that speech, I was talking about the impact violent crime and vicious drug cartels were having on communities across the country and the particular danger they posed to children and families,” she said in a statement. “Looking back, I shouldn’t have used those words, and I wouldn’t use them today.
“Apology not accepted” — Ashley Williams
https://twitter.com/Ash_Bash23
Most of us politically aware people “heard” exactly what she meant when she said that. The Clintons do wink-wink, nudge-nudge speaking to white supramacists in “code” and have build an entire empire on it.
It’s not just WHAT she said, it was the tone and inflection; the general level of hatred aimed at young people, who she never deigned to take one second to get to know — anymore than she got to know Ashley Williams.
The Clintons are fabulous at using strong-arm guys and institutions to protect themselves and their plantations.
I wish you’d posted the viral photo of the people at this fundraiser. They knew exactly what she meant when she said that it was time to “get back to the issues”. She knows exactly what they want and caters to it time after time.
#whichHillary was an attempt to let it be known we don’t want to hear her “codes”, her defense of “affluenza” for white Wall Street predators, her own corrupt Wall Street/commodities practices, and other things we are FED UP with.
The “code talking” goes on and on, and the Pennsylvania Avenue plantation awaits their return so they can rip off some more furniture, art, china, linens .. WHO’S THE SUPER PREDATOR?
What you meant to say:
Most of us politically-correct people “heard” exactly what she meant when she said that.
No. I meant EXACTLY what I said. Are you mansplaining to me by any chance?
If you are, forget it.
Mr. Marin is a racist who is deeply antagonistic to Black Lives Matter and is very pro-cop.
I have requested that the TI Legal Dept. enforce its “Terms of Use” provisions regarding your continuous libelous and insulting posts in reply to my comments.
Good luck with that. I’ve never been such a delicate snowflake that I’ve gone running to TI legal when I’ve been called an antisemite, terrorist-lover and racist.
Lou, perhaps you should seek a “safe space.” I hear they are very popular on PC campuses.
Let’s go Left! Any occasion to misconstrue clear and principled statements, or damn a 20 year old warning because of what didn’t happen since.
We will all be so much happier with our moral clarity when Truthteller Trump is POTUS.
Robert and Zaid,
“Williams demanded that Clinton apologize for those words and for using racially charged language suggesting that the nation was threatened by a generation of young ‘super predators.'”
That doesn’t seem to be the case. She asked for an apology “for mass incarceration” (as you reported).
Super-predator is a loaded, simplistic and wasted term and has nothing to do with the color of your paint, black, red, brown or white. When I was in Special Forces I had the skills of a predator but thankfully never developed lack of conscience. If I had chosen “Breaking Bad” there were offers and opportunity, declined; and crossed to the “dark side” I could have become a very scary person deserving of long incarceration.
I often wonder who I might have become if I had been raised on the mean streets of Chicago, Baltimore or certain parts of Boston with less opportunity and more risk; for better or worse a different man for sure.
Most drug crime could be handled in drug courts with treatment, job training and no police record to render one unemployable. If a person commits a violent crime against others, illegally carries or10X uses a weapon in commission of a crime they have chosen.
Hillary would know, Bill Clinton was, after all, a superpredator of women.
I wasn’t familiar with the term ‘superpredator’, so I consulted Wikipedia:
I would argue that Mr. Clinton has brought the superpredators to heel. From what I’ve read, they’ve all meekly declared they will vote for her at the convention, regardless of outcome of the primaries.
We may be talking cross-purposes again, but … ‘um, uh, er, I think you are confusinhg ‘super-predator’ with ‘super-delegate’ benitoe+!
*Semantics? … perhaps, perhaps not.
Predators are always at the top of the food chain.
Super-delegates eat predators for breakfast.
Yes Sir, a Government of Wolves.
Hillary Clinton’s logic getting ‘tough on crime’ (non-white collar crime, anyway.) is unassailable: lock ’em all up, throw away the key and create an economic incentive (for-profit prisons) to grow the business.
*it takes a village-idiot to raise a ‘super-predator’
Arrogance is as arrogance does. But, in Hillary Clinton’s defense, they all do it. Some more so; some less so. The secret is to not give power to people who seek it. At all costs, do not give them the power. Keep it for yourself. And if you must give it away, by all means give it to someone who…….nope, keep it for yourself.
For some reason after reading this (another great) article, I cannot get the movie “Holes” out of my head. Hillary reminds me of the character that Sigourney Weaver played in the film. And the desert scenery with holes as far as the eye can see just reminds me of Hillary’s knack for digging herself into them.
I suppose that what happens with blind ambition.
HILLARY SAID, WE REDUCED WELFARE, SAVED MONEY,
(BY THROWING POOR OUT ON THE STREETS)
Hillary is —
Proud of her role in Bill Clinton’s REFORM OF WELFARE ACT, reducing welfare roll by 60%, REPEATING RACIST STEROTYPE language; BUT result was BY REDUCING WELFARE BENEFITS, PUTTING MILLIONS OF POOR AND WORKING POOR ONTO STREETS IN DIRE POVERTY. Clinton SLASHED PUBLIC HOUSING by $17 billion (61%), and INCREASED FUNDS FOR INCARCERATION by $19 billion (171%), making the construction of prisons the nation’s main housing program for the urban poor.
It destroyed the safety net, increased poverty, lowered income for single mothers, put people from welfare into homeless shelters, and left states free to eliminate welfare entirely. It moved mothers and children from welfare to work, but many of them are not making enough to survive. Many of them were pushed off welfare rolls because they didn’t show up for an appointment, because they could not get to an appointment for lack of child care, or because they were not notified of the appointment. Three Asst. Secretaries resigned in protest of this welfare reform.
Feminist critics, said the Clinton’s reform was MOTIVATED by RACISM and MISOGYNY, using stereotypes of LAZY, OVERWEIGHT, SLOVENLY, SEXUALLY INDULGENT AND “ENDLESSLY FECUND” AFRICAN-AMERICAN welfare recipients. It assumed that out-of-wedlock births were “illegitimate” and that only a male could confer respectability on a child. It dismissed the value of the unpaid work of raising a family, and insisted that mothers get paid work, “no matter how dangerous, abusive, or poorly paid.”
In her book, Living History, Hillary PROUDLY AND SELF-RIGHTEOUSLY TOUTS her role: “By the time Bill and I left the White House, welfare rolls had dropped 60 percent.” However this was by cutting benefits to those living in poverty, many of them working poor. Her efforts helped cause the number of Americans living in extreme poverty to more than double from 636,00 then to 1.6 million today.
This is what the Clintons mean of having experience in being pragmatic, in finding common ground with Republicans, and in getting things done.

Excellent. Thanks. I’m glad you mentioned child care, or rather, lack of child care. The lack of affordable child care is a serious issue, but, since it affects primarily the working poor–in other words, those who can least afford it–the issue doesn’t get much attention from the politicians.
Yeah, you nailed it. Good post.
HILLARY SAID THROW THEM ALL IN JAIL !
Hillary, —
Proudly lobbied congress with RACIST STEOROTYPE language for 3 STRIKES, JAIL BUILDING, PRIVATE PRISONS, MASS INCARCERATION; BUT this law put the black poor before the criminal-justice firing squad, resulting in more people in US jails than any other country on earth including China with 4 times our population.
Hillary, HELPED INSTITUTIONALIZE RACISM in our criminal justice system. In pushing for the 1994 crime bill, she used RACIALLY CODED RHETORIC to CAST BLACK CHILDREN AS ANIMALS. “They are not just gangs of kids anymore,” she said. “They are often the kinds of kids that are called ‘SUPER-PREDATORS.’ NO CONSCIENCE, NO EMPATHY. We can talk about why they ended up that way, but FIRST WE HAVE TO BRING THEM TO HEEL.” Hillary said, “We NEED MORE POLICE, we NEED MORE and TOUGHER PRISON SENTENCES for repeat offenders. We NEED MORE PRISONS to keep violent offenders FOR AS LONG AS IT TAKES TO KEEP THEM OFF THE STREETS.”
Prison population went from 847,000 in 1992 to 1,334,000 in 2000; and now over 2,000,000, giving us 25% of the world’s prison population despite having only 5% of its overall population.
Prisoners are excluded from unemployment numbers and this goosed the Clinton employment rate. Counting prisoners, the Black unemployment rate when Clinton left office was 41%.
This is what the Clintons mean of having experience in being pragmatic in finding common ground with Republicans and getting things done.
AFTER Hillary ran for election, Bill Clinton expressed regret. Regret is worthless for the hundreds of thousands slammed into jail by the mass psychosis for “lynching” that Clinton the Democratic republican marshalled in. Regret is not a substitute for the First Call good judgment that was needed.

HILLARY & THE BANKING FIASCO
HIllary is —-
Proud that Bill Clinton, in being pragmatic in finding common ground with Republicans, and in getting things done, destroyed Glass-Steagell (which reduced financial risk by separating commercial banks from investment trading banks). She fights against replacing it. RESULT Big Banks get Bigger.
She is absolutely NOT influenced by getting $1.8 million from 8 speeches to bankers. Yes, from the same Wall Street investors and bankers that play a huge role in DISCRIMINATORY REDLINING against minorities, FRAUDULENT PREDATORY LENDING, and FRAUDULENT FORECLOSURES; the same big banks that STOLE THE AMERICAN DREAM from poor hard working whites, blacks, latinos, native Americans, and other homeowners.
This is what the Clintons mean of having experience in being pragmatic in finding common ground with Republicans and getting things done.
Bill and Hillary both continue to deny any connection between the repeal of Glass-Steagall and the Recession of 2008, and oppose any replacement of Glass-Steagell.
The oldest propaganda technique is to repeat a lie emphatically and often until it is taken for the truth.
The big bank boosters and analysts who should know better keep repeating the falsehood that repeal of Glass-Steagall had nothing to do with the Recession of 2008. In fact however, the financial crisis might not have happened at all but for the 1999 repeal of the Glass-Steagall law that separated commercial and investment banking for seven decades. If there is any hope of avoiding another meltdown, it’s critical to understand why Glass-Steagall repeal helped to cause the crisis. Without a return to something like Glass-Steagall, another greater catastrophe is just a matter of time.
See, Senator Elizabeth Warren (former Harvard Law Professor) schools CNBC Host about why her Glass-Steagall replacement bill (co-sponsored by John McCain) is needed.

JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs, and their sociopathic CEO’s, Dimon and Blankfein, and all their terminally toxic, obscene plutocratic ilk, constitute “super predators” in spades, but you don’t hear present day Hillary whining about, or threatening them…
Super-predator Larry (Africa is not polluted enough) Summers is almost certainly gonna appear on any short list in any Clinton cabinet; but no doubt, he’s thoroughly “our kind ” of super-predator.
Hillary’s forgotten about all her unconscionable actions and smears against the little people. Why does she have to put up with the sniveling peasants and all their memories? Why can’t they just abase themselves in an orderly fashion, bow to the inevitable, and grant her the position of absolute power God intended her to hold?

typo in article. “Bug Drug” instead of “Big drug”
Lord, please don’t let the downtrodden Black people give us this nasty person as POTUS. Wake up and think, she has a well documented record as a Goldwater girl when John Lewis alluded to her being on the bridge with him…how low can you go, ask any Tom!
No conscience, no empathy…..hmmmm, sounds like sociopathic behavior to me and where do you find the highest percentage of sociopaths….CEOs and that’s a fact. Corporations by their very nature are amoral which if they were “real” as opposed to legal fiction persons would all be sociopaths. IMHO; the only thing worse than a sociopathic CEO is a corporatist, obsequious, courtier like HRC.
Hillary is playing dirty in chat rooms now. When you chat in a Hillary support article, if your comments attack her it will become invisible. Only you can see your comments and the rest can’t. So, when I logged off, my comments disappeared and reappeared when I logged back on. And the comments count doesn’t include my comment either. Wow free of speech my azz. Google the article and try it yourself: “Behind The Video That Made Hillary Clinton’s Feminism Go Viral (In A Good Way)”
The most pronounced characteristic HRC projects is her overly inflated sense of exceptionalism (demonstrated by the fees she charges for interacting with groups that skim the economy with the help of the executive and legislative branches).
Other than hedge fund managers like her daughter, anybody voting for Clinton is analogous to a turkey voting for Thanksgiving. It is good that this “superpredator” concept popularized by the Clintons is being aired at this time. They should also air the fact that the Jihadis who took over from Khadaffi with Clinton’s major help liquidated 10s of thousands of ethnic subsaharan Africans who had settled in Libya under Khadaffi.
How exactly are these words that she said discredited?
To crib a phrase someone else; Hillary, you have nowhere to run, and no place to hide.
It keeps being said that Hillary is a terribly inapt campaigner and candidate, and it’s circumstances like this one that makes be think that assertion is true. If she can get caught back on her heels being challenged on “super-predators,” – given how much that characterization has bounced around the web – then she is simply not prepared. The claim that nobody’s ever asked me before is an enormous black mark on her campaign staff. Whether she’d ever been asked before Ashley Williams did is no excuse for not having been prepped to face it. And, even without benefit of preparation, the ‘effin’ simplest thing to do would have been to acknowledge that her choice of words at the time were poor, and that she’d take them back if she could.
It would seem that Hillary gave evidence of having made two egregious errors. (1) Assuming the unconditional goodwill of every donor in the room [Take it to the bank; There is always one!] And, (2) either she, or someone on her team, was derelict in keeping track of the milieu in which she’s campaigning. Hillary needs AA voters, and she needs to peel off the young women gravitating to Sanders. She got caught flat-footed and blind-sided by someone who is representative of the very vote she wants to count on. A blunder.
“I shouldn’t have used those words.”
Maybe she shouldn’t have thought those thoughts.
And maybe she shouldn’t have supported the vile actions of her husband’s revolting regime, AT THE TIME, actions which went out of their way to antagonize and marginalize the very people she hopes to suck into her filthy campaign…
“we also have to have an organized effort against gangs, just as in a previous generation we had an organized effort against the mob. We need to take these people on, they are often connected to bug drug cartels, they are not just gangs of kids anymore. They are often the kinds of kids who are called superpredators. No conscience. No empathy. We can talk about why they ended up that way but first we have to bring them to heel. And the president has asked the FBI to launch a very concerted effort against gangs everywhere. In addition to that, he has appointed a new drug czar”
Can’t help but notice that the language here, unlike with many of her campaign pitches, isn’t racialized at all. I don’t recall the moronic phrase “superpredator” being quite as prevalent as the authors, and academics are never as influential as they’d like to believe, but I suspect any other word would have been suspected of being a code, or having a double meaning. If criminologists were predicting an exponential growth in crime rates they were just extrapolating on existing trends. Youth crime did just about triple from the 60s to the 80s. It seems to me an article of faith to believe that the precipitous drop in crime rates had nothing to do with the introduction of stiffer penalties for criminals
Then again for real expertise on grappling with street crime and gang warfare I would certainly look to Bernie Sanders, afterall he was the mayor Burlington VT.
It was indicated that youth crime rates were falling precipitously while the legislation was still being passed, indicating no cause/effect relationship
Youth crime had begun to turn the corner in the mid 90s, but it didn’t half until about 2000. Mass incarceration didn’t happen at once either, there was lots of legislation in the 1980s like the Sentencing Reform Act that contributed to it. There are likely multiple factors for the drop, abortions, mass incarceration, better technology etc personally I think the prevalence of credit cards is an underrated factor.
Back to the issues, huh? Well that’s telling. I guess she doesn’t honestly believe that the mass incarceration and killing of young black people is truly an issue.
hmmm …. i’m pretty sure Hillary Clinton is relying on #superdelegates – not #blackVotesMatter to win the primaries.
…expunging the acrid taste of super-predators of yesteryear with the wholesome goodness of today’s super-delegates
“No conscience. No empathy.”
I think she was projecting.
