A few days before the Georgia primary, influential Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed published a column on CNN.com praising Hillary Clinton and ripping her opponent, Bernie Sanders. Reed attacked Sanders as being out of step with Democrats on gun policy, and accused him of elevating a “one-issue platform” that ignores the plight of the “single mother riding two buses to her second job.”
But emails released from Reed’s office indicate that the column, which pilloried Sanders as out of touch with the poor, was primarily written by a corporate lobbyist, and was edited by Correct the Record, one of several pro-Clinton Super PACs.
Anne Torres, the mayor’s director of communications, told The Intercept this week that the column was not written by the mayor, but by Tharon Johnson, a former Reed adviser who now works as a lobbyist for UnitedHealth, Honda, and MGM Resorts, among other clients. The column’s revisions by staffers from Correct the Record are documented in the emails.
Johnson, Torres told us, is a “capable writer,” who managed Reed’s first campaign. Reed “provided verbal edits and feedback to Tharon, but other than that, no one from my office or the mayor’s office wrote this op-ed,” Torres said.
One email describes how Torres was introduced to Daniel Wessel, a press secretary for Correct the Record, by Johnson.
On the morning before the column was published, Torres sent an email to Correct the Record asking Wessel to send her the “final version.” She sent over Reed’s bio and headshot and wrote, “Let me know if you need anything else.”
“Attached is a slightly modified version after CNN ran a fact check,” Wessel wrote back. The attached Word document shows a number of revisions through track changes, with multiple Correct the Record staffers providing edits. (The metadata of the document shows that Wessel created the document.)
Wessel emailed Torres and Johnson again later that day, after the piece was posted, to indicate that he was in touch with CNN to make a post-publication “fix” to an error in the piece. “Thank you for all your help, turned out great,” Wessel wrote. “We’ll promote throughout the day.”
Torres said that Correct the Record reached out to assist with the piece after being contacted by Johnson. “The extent of my assistance (as you can read in the emails) was sending over the mayor’s bio and headshot,” Torres said.
Johnson did not respond to a request for comment. Correct the Record did not respond either.
Correct the Record is the Super PAC founded by David Brock, a Republican-turned-Democratic strategist who controls a number of pro-Clinton campaign entities and websites.
In April, Correct the Record caused a stir when it announced plans to spend $1 million to build a “digital task force” dedicated to “pushing out positive content to Hillary supporters online to counter negative attacks and false narratives.”
Super PACs were intended to be independent entities, explicitly prohibited from coordinating directly with campaigns. Correct the Record, however, has tested the limits of campaign finance law and openly coordinates with the Clinton campaign. The group claims it is not engaging in campaign speech known as “independent expenditures,” a classification for traditional campaign communications, and therefore is exempted from the coordination rules.
Experts on campaign finance have questioned the coordination. Campaign Legal Center’s Paul Ryan told Time reporter Michael Scherer that Correct the Record is “creating new ways to undermine campaign regulation” by skirting the coordination rules.

If Bernie does not get the nomination. I invite disaffected Bernie supporters to consider supporting Dr. Jill Stein of the Green Party.
And I invite disaffected voters of all parties to not give up and just stay home on Election Day – but to IMPEACH THE SYSTEM by VOTING OTHER:
http://voteotherproject.wordpress.com
Oh hell no! Will write Bernie’s name in before I waste my vote on that woman!
We, Bernie supporters, will never support Clinton. She is a neoliberal centrist that supports wall street greed, fracking, the death penalty, and interventionism throughout the world. She is not a progressive. Wake up, Sheople and realize the establishment is not good for the 99%!
Right on.
btw – wallstreet hates Trump and that aint bad.
i am not meaning to imply anything racist here… hillary is the black hole for wallstreet money and power. You can actually see big cash hoards getting sucked into her vortex. Perhaps she wants to turn the country into one giant animal farm of (what’s an animalistic words for wallstreet obeyers and victims?)
If you haven’t done so already, please click on the link below to take the Bernie or bust pledge and join the movement of 100,000 and growing! Basically, the pledge states if Bernie’s not the nominee you pledge to write in Bernie’s name or vote Green Party in the general election.
https://citizensagainstplutocracy.wordpress.com
I highly recommend voting for the Green Party in the general election as write in votes don’t count and if the Green Party receives at least 5% of the vote in the general election they may receive tens of millions of dollars to fund future campaigns.
Please share & ask others to do the same. Thank you.
Not true that write-ins don’t count. It depends on the state; some allow it, some don’t.
Who wrote the letter is meaningless. Mr. Mayor expects to be rewarded for delivering his endorsement product. The fact that the product was outsourced is of no consequence, the political product was delivered, and now Hillary has another favor to repay.
I couldn’t disagree more and would even suggest you have it backwards. That the major direct source of government corruption is allowed to actually put their words into the mouths of elected leaders is no different than those same lobbyists buying congressional committee members through bundled campaign contributions and then being allowed to write proposed law in favor of clients – over the health and safety of American citizens. A singular instance of suspected future quid pro quo, having a possible favor to repay, is what’s meaningless when compared to the institutionalized system of legalized bribery. And as you demonstrate, it’s essentially taken for granted not just by corporate media but most voters – that the source of those legalized bribes are somehow good to go when writing OUR country’s laws, or even placing their words in leaders’ mouths.
Lee Fang’s focus is extremely legitimate and greatly appreciated.

The “lesser of 2 evils” –
Let us connect the dots of what “lesser of 2 evils” has done to us.
WE THE PEOPLE have been voting for the the lesser of 2 evils for decade, after decade, after decade…. after decade. So who will do less damage? The answer be, the “lesser of 2 evils”. So the lesser of 2 evils trashes the country slowly, while the true evil does so quickly. Well this doesn’t matter any longer, the COUNTRY IS COMPLETELY TRASHED. HRC supporters need to get this through their heads. If this Liberal offered up support to HRC nothing would change.
The DNC is just as corrupt as the RNC.
Hillary Clinton… NEVER.
Well stated! Thank you!
#BernieorBust
Clinton is establishment and has all the money and power behind her. You can expect a lot of dirty tricks like this from her. An election between her and Trump should be very entertaining for this reason (among others). And let’s face it: Americans elect politicians for entertainment more than anything else nowadays.
Americans elect politicians for entertainment more than anything else nowadays.
true. But it always was this way from the time that television advertising began, the 50’s. The propagandists that own wallstreet media, in order to select their candydates, figured it was ok to advertise the candydate into office. The propagandists have only very slowly improved the entertainment because campaigns buy time, not production.
Americans do not understand real economics. Meaning, that operation of economics that affects social maintenance and development with respect to rewards for efforts, retainment of rights, nuturing of good relationships, and crime prevention.
Wallstreet pitches economics as if it were some complicated thing that only chosen people can talk about. That is a fraud. Wallstreet economics – with all it’s calculus of cash flows and interest rates – is a fraud and a front to rob Americans of assets and make wars. The key to seeing this and understanding this is simple – There is one system that makes up the current American economy, and that is the currency system. The current currency system in the US is privately owned. It operates as a very large pawn shop using a poison loan method to capture the assets that all of mainstreet work for.
To be clear, all money in circulation today, cash and credit, is privately owned and loaned. All of it has to be repaid. The scheme-scam is that what you think you own is a mirage because your work and possessions is “subject to” you having passed on what you earned and borrowed to someone else. Your assets equal to someone elses debt. It may sound complicated but it’s really simple when you see the picture as
— one person printing money who hands the paper to someone to build something and then asks for the paper back or what the person built, and with interest.
—-it’s a typical scenario replicated that millions of times
This is a fraud because it ineviteably requires infinite growth of population without limit, it causes people to feed the wealth creation (repaid loans as profits and interest) and in so doing it manufactures poverty.
BERNIE UNDERSTANDS THIS.
HILLARY DOES NOT.
Hillary is wallstreet’s front for the perpetuation of this currency scheme.
The scheme is NOT capitalism. Capitalism is simply the act of pooling resources to create an operation. Socialism is how the operation interfaces with social needs and there are only 3 types of social needs with regard to real economics; LIFE SUPPORT, COMFORT, WEALTH (not really a need but it exists as a relative measure).
Is there a better currency system? Yes. But it has not been implemented in western vulture culture.
Wallstreet “runs” the American currency system (established in 1913) and uses it to capture american assets and they need Hillary to help them feed the machine. In America, THE POOL OF WEALTH DEMANDS TO BE FED INTEREST. IT IS GETTING BIGGER AND WANTS MORE FOOD.
Bernie Sanders will slay this beast, Hillary will feed it.
That is your choice.
I believe the republicans are going to attempt to SWAP out Trump and put in Mitt Romney.
Mitt Romney is actually worse than Hillary. Far worse. Mitt actually acts to poison loan pretty much everything without building anything unless Mitt (fronting for wallstreet) owns it 100% and places the liabilities onto the public. Mitt is not just a fraud, he operates like a thief.
Pretty simple. QUESTIONS?
yes: why has the propaganda machine been so effective in hiding some of these empirical descriptions of our political reality? ;)
“why has the propaganda machine been so effective in hiding some of these empirical descriptions of our political reality? ;)” ASK who owns the propaganda machines? It’s the media conglomerates that are in turn owned by the international corporations which are owned by the international Banksters. Connect the dots ….. Why would any of these entities tell the 99%ers their craft of corruption? Are you old enough to remember JFK’s speech on the international cabals? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdMbmdFOvTs These secret groups and societies control the world as we know it.
@epf
and what Mark Pittman says.
People in the US have been conditioned to listen to primary source liars.
Lies REMAIN with the targeted person because there is no reconciliation process because there is NO PLANNED GOAL.
It is a combination of factors.
– If it aint broke (affecting me) don’t fix it.
– Cant see the forrest thru the trees.
– Stuck in event mode.
– accepting lies as a sedative, emphasis sedative
– unwillingness to engage in contention
– unwillingness to admit fault, lack of humbleness
– lack of accurate information that illuminates better
– lack of time and power to effect change
overall willingness to being a victim leading to wrongful blaming leading to patchwork nonsense.
Sue their asses! then MAYBE it will stop
USA Elections are obsolete. We still depend on a system invented over 2016 years ago when instantaneous communication was not possible. It is time to ban political parties and representational voting and make way for a truly democratic system. The technology supports it, the powers that be do not!
Ancient Greece had a popular democracy system. It is doable today. In order to implement it, it has to be proposed in detail and sold. Do it on a website, call it makeAmericaARealDemocracy.org or something. It’s doable.
Direct democracy is not close to being “doable” with societies being as grossly overpopulated as they are. And no kind of democracy works without an informed electorate, which the U.S. isn’t even close to and which again is much harder when there are way too many people.
doable meaning mechanically.
meaningfully? as you point out, that’s another storey.
i see *informed* as the issue.
the planet is overpopulated for sure. but it would not affect voting. consider india – probably the best voting system on the planet. And frankly, the company that could do this in the US is VERIFONE.
How is this different from ghostwriting? Seldom does anyone write original content anymore, it’s commonly outsourced. Unless the mayor disagreed with the content, in which case he shouldnt have allowed it to run, why is this so important?
Par for Hillary’s band of Liars. You know, show me your friends….& I’ll tell you what you are!
What is Bernie really going to do for African American. The answer is the name #Nothing.
I hope you are kidding. Senator Sanders has been a CHAMPION of civil rights for over four decades. He is the ONE candidate fighting for the poorest, most disenfranchised. Hillary STILL laughs about being a ‘Goldwater girl’, she started her political career working on Goldwater’s campaign, of which one major aspect was FIGHTING the Civili Rights Act. Yep, Hillary started her career working to overturn the Civil Rights Act. Ask Killer Mike what candidate supports, cares, and listens to African Americans. Be smarter than to buy into Hillaries advertising and lies.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4G4RFH2Qo1E
Make sure to watch Mike’s interview with Sanders too:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJjQWaWIxCs
Watch those videos, and tell me Sanders isn’t the ONLY candidate that even DESERVES the black vote.
The clintons provide them free meals and shelter … In prison…
LOL … as much as I hate feeding David Brock’s trolls, that one was worth it. Perfect response to another “just say anything” lie coming from the Clintonistas.
And what has Clinton done for the black man other than make their lives hell, jail them or send them off to war?
actually, #EVERYTHING
What Bernie is going to do is provide the operating environment for a successful society on all fronts. He will repair the foundation upon which everyone stands upon.
Hillary is a fraud. She is a patchwork schemer. A wallstreet front. Wallstreet wants to drain America, to bleed America to death. Hillary is fronting for wallstreet to provide %poison loans% so that wallstreet can rob America of public property just like she arranged for the theft of Pemex in Mexico.
Bernie’s social aspect is public ownership of public resources and the criminals of wallstreet dont like that. Bernie would prevent the wallstreet thieves from bad loans, stealing homes, war taxes.
get a clue.
He won’t call them “super predators” because Hillary already did that.
Hillary Clinton sends her husband out to shit on Black Lives Matter in a naked attempt to court Republicans who won’t for Trump, on top of her “super-predator” dog whistle to the racists, but SHE’s going to go to the mat for African-Americans and take on systemic racism, right?
Norm Finkelstein somewhat nails the phenomena of the African American community losing their human rights and social justice base by automatically supporting war hawk Hillary Clinton without getting down into the nuts and bolts of Hillary’s deadly war decisions and her connections to Wall Street.
http://mondoweiss.net/2016/04/norman-finkelstein-on-sanders-the-first-intifada-bds-and-ten-years-of-unemployment/
“The African-American vote has been the bulwark of reaction in this election. It’s sinking Bernie and buoying Hillary. However inspiring their courage and conviction, and however successful they’ve been in raising public consciousness, I can’t agree with Black Lives Matter activists who say that they’re above or beyond electoral politics. It’s radical posturing, posing and preening. They say that Sanders doesn’t speak to—the new buzzword is intersectionality. Tell me, which is the group of people in America today that stand to benefit most from a jobs program, universal health care and free college education? The buzzword obscures the basic fact that African-Americans are suffering most from our economic system and would benefit most if the Sanders platform were implemented. I was a radical in my youth, and I emphatically remain one. But I have come to see that I was wrong about many things. It’s a regrettable aspect not only of mainstream but also radical history that it focuses on the glamorous, chic, photogenic personalities who are often not the ones who effected real, concrete change. You take the case of the different phases of the Civil Rights Movement. The phase that really changed the face of America wasn’t the Black Power movement. It was the early phase of SNCC, the freedom rides, sit-ins, and voter registration drives, the period from the beginning of the Montgomery bus boycott to the passage of the 1964 and 1965 Civil Rights Acts. If you look at who were the grassroots heroes, people who were just breathtaking in their courage, intelligence, maturity and earnestness—Bob Moses, Diane Nash, James Forman, James Bevel, Fanny Lou Hamer—most of them nobody has heard of. But everyone knows Eldridge Cleaver, Bobby Seale, Huey Newton and Angela Davis. (Though I don’t want to be hard on Angela, she’s a uniquely impressive figure.) Everyone knows the Panthers, but who knows SNCC? The Civil Rights Movement was perhaps the most inspirational chapter in American history. But today’s activists are focusing on the wrong phase of it. Like myself, they’ve been seduced by style at the expense of substance. – “
Well said. If nothing else comes of this campaign maybe it has mobilized enough of us to demand our election laws represent the will of the people. Getting money out of politics has to be prioritized for any positive change to happen. Thank you for posting such a clear fact filled response to this issue.
Dear Kathleen, are you aware that rigid, longstanding US trade policy decisions, going back to the Clinton years, literally BAN these things that we all want as a matter of policy, also, doing away with the so called national right to regulate (all they eave us is a right to DE-regulate in that one direction) and then we are trying to enforce our will on our own country – which is in many cases against our OWN public interest- invariably for the biggest corporations, though- and the whole rest of the world through the WTO?
Thats one of the reasons why re-electing Clintons would be such a huge mistake right now, it seems like an endorsement of their 20 year long “progressive liberalisation” scheme which is claimed to help developing countries but at the great expense of both working Americans, starting with professionals, and their own citizens, because who wants to work for low wages on the other side of the world instead of making a decent wage at home- that is what we dont want, for them or us. This is the danger of electing Presidets and other legislators who have hidden corporate agendas.
>Tell me, which is the group of people in America today that stand to benefit most from a jobs program, universal health care and free college education?
>
We all can and would, because an advanced education is a necessity in an advanced world where hiring a firm can no longer be based n country, may only be “based on objective and transparent criteria, such as competence and the ability to provide a service”
But it will hurt because black Americans will find themselves pitted against Africans and South Asians from documented “less developed nations” and whatever laws against “discrimination” that exist will fight discriminaton against them. the US, being a rich country, is deemed mature enough in trade ideology to no longer need regulatory provisions – perhaps even minimum wages – they may be framed instead as “a disguised restriction on the cross-border provision of a service” (thats part of the big lie of the GATS, it was where the big problems for the public health care and education, in particular, began.
Here is the root of many of the problems- the definition used for the scope of GATS- This basically defines what needs to be privatized in the public sectors all around the world, and what can remain because that service sector is *wholly* uncommercial- (It is interreted much more narrowly than one would think from the statemets of those who would sell us on these ‘agreements’- So, this GATS deal is responsible for the privatization of public housing since 1995, and its responsible for the war on public healt care and education-
“For the purposes of this Agreement…
(b) ‘services’ includes any service in any sector except services supplied in the exercise of governmental authority;
(c) ‘a service supplied in the exercise of governmental authority’ means any service which is supplied neither on a commercial basis, nor in competition with one or more service suppliers.”
——
So GATS, TiSA and their ilk areIn no small part, a war on BOTH public health care and on public education, especially higher education, which when combined into one assault, is a war on science itself too.
—-
Which would make sense given the hge costs of biopersistent endcrine disrupting chemicals which we are trying to prevent regulation of in TTIP. (See “Estimating Burden and Disease Costs of Exposure to Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals in the European Union” http://press.endocrine.org/doi/10.1210/jc.2014-4324 )
Also the TTIP contains an energy chapter, which ay change US cities dramatically by causing a sudden jump upward in the cost of natura gas and by extension, electricity, (which tracks natural gas) which could lead to a loss of rent stabilization laws, which tie affordable rents, often in cities- to a single apartment and are not transferable- And remember at the same time, GATS “standstill” bars any new public housing from being built.
So, there is a very real risk that TTIP’s energy chapter wont just expend fracking and make regulating it impossible (It also bars state, local and national environmental regulation unless more than 38 countries agree on it, gutting the EU Precautionary Principle which we should all be adopting instead) it may also dramatically reduce the supply of affordable housing by causing natural gas prices to soar, making the older urban housing expensive to heat and cool, a change that many dont expect when they hear “deregulation of export” – Not realizing that natural gas sells for several times what it does here in Asia.
So it clear that MS. Clinton has a lot to hide in her agenda that would likely hurt the vulnerable American poor and middle class a great deal more than help them. No wonder her PR minions and the legions of sock puppets sent onto blogs are so aggressive.
But back to education- The changes proposed could eliminate the chances to gain employment in an increasingly jobless future for whoe generations- and set the tone for the whole planets future.
This agenda is the wrong one. And it really needs to be exposed because, for example, as the 850 member European University Association- the main organization of instututions of higher learning in the EU says, GATS and its progeny TiSA threaten the continued existence of public education. That is what HRC stands for and its evil.
If allowed to go as planned the huge betrayal embedded in the continuation and rubber stamping of this entrely hidden and deceptive GATS originated ideology will likely cause a lot of illness around the country, it will effect people viscerally.
GATS was already responsible for the horrid Clinton era repealing of Glass-Steagall which led to the huge scheme to push subprime loans and then steal the wealth of small investors and homewners, and our taxpayers money in 2008, Public Citizen has a great deal on that. Now they want to make the same mistake again in TiSA too.
But I think the hiding this hrribe FTA under a fake health care scheme which they knew could not work was the worst. Maybe one or two millin Americans have died because of it. Our health care system has been kept in a state of limbo to serve the amoral GATS ideology- so it could be milked as a crisis when the time to push for the huge guest worker program came- That manipulation is not simply human experimentation, already a crime against humanity, it is worse because they knew in advance that the experiment could not and would not work. That should be seen as an even bigger crime against humanity.
yep. All that and the LANHAM ACT which effectively allows big money to rob individuals of patents and trademarks. Bill and Hillary are corporately owned.
Until we nationalise life support, and change the currency system, we suffer miserably as slaves to owners.
The connection between David Brock and Hillary Clinton
says everything about Clinton’s character.
There is nothing beyond a love of scheming and domination.
Of course, this is also true of Trump.
Also, by extension, this is true of the vast majority of voters who
cling to and support the republican/democrat perversity.
This is the “exceptional” character of the faking U$A.
Correct The Record is Hillary’s super pac that is run by David Brock who wrote a book smearing Anita Hill a decade or two back. He was formerly in the pockets of the right and very anti Clinton before he switched course again a decade or two back. His ethical record is less than pristine. Not a charming fellow there that Hillary has in charge of one of her super pacs.
What’s there to be surprised about?! It’s all about money and power. For all concerned. People surround themselves with others who are like-minded.
Thank you for this. I can’t wait to read what happens next!
Great work, Lee. Keep forcing the truth out into the daylight!
Amazing scoop and superb exposes Lee, thank you so very much. This serves as yet another example of the widespread racketeering that the elite are endulging in to corrupt politics. Americans must reject crooked Hillary and her Wall Street cronies.
This is what Nazi Germany did for Hitler…Mussolini…
Phenomenal work by Lee Fang and The Intercept. Don’t stop!
I wonder how long progressives in this country are going to take this systematic abuse by the Democratic leadership? Yes I said ABUSE, because that is exactly what it is.
It is abuse, and anyone that votes for Hillary is voting for a continuation.
Good job Lee!
Lee Fang: Thank you for your great exposes. Is there any nexus between these lobbying groups writing for the Mayor of Atlanta and the ones you documented in your article on exposing Dem lobbyists trying to kill single-payer in CO? The names of these groups have me going dizzy.
https://theintercept.com/2016/05/03/single-payer-dems-colo/
Did you tweet something about press release versus one on one interview? It seems like I caught that somewhere but it’s been a busy day.
No disrespect to Georgia but our New York “Democrats” are more corrupt thsn yours by several orders of magnitude
BERNIE is the antidote which will preserve the power of life support and remove the corruption.
You see, what Bernie will do is, instead of maintaining the power of corruption for balance of life support, he will depower the wealthy owners which will all the unions to return to modesty and pride with power.
Spread the Word. God be with you.
Yeah well, I’m from Chicago and you can’t top us for corruption. The old Mayor Daley practically wrote the book on the modern version of it.
“But emails released from Reed’s office indicate that the column, which pilloried Sanders as out of touch with the poor, was primarily written by a corporate lobbyist, and was edited by Correct the Record, one of several pro-Clinton Super PACs.”
They can propagandize, slander, deceive and out and out lie, but:
Wisdom enables you to know where you stand, while providing the moral conviction to hold your ground, offering hope as the main focus.
Where we stand is against; the utter corruption that runs our bought and paid for governments, tyrannical corporate personhood powers, murderous military, financial lords of usury, vampires controlling the healthcare schema, prison for profit enslavers, defilers of knowledge and education, deliberately and systematically misleading media, worshippers of the dark force of compromise, judges upholding injustice, most greedy destroyers of our planet, and servants to the status quo’s deliverance of oppression.
The hope that we recognize is in the souls of our love ones and neighbors reflected in their eyes ever looking for a better way.
Once a person sells their soul for the type of money that hillary has done, it’s over and that person cannot be trusted.
It’s like drug addiction. People need to feed the possessor.
Perfectly said, thank you
Yes. Amen.
Great work, Lee. Yet one more reason Clinton needs to be in court.
I.LOVE.LEE.FANG
Scoopmeister extraordinaire.
Hillary Clinton has been unemployed from government for 3 years since February 1, 2013. Hillary resigned after 4 years as Secretary of State (2009 to 2013). Do not give her a government job, please. NO.
Have Hillary stay out of government. Do not give her a government job. Hillary and Bill Clinton need to stay out of the government for good.
Thank you, Tim. Thank you for having me here and thank you so much for your very kind remarks.
Good evening, everyone. It really is a pleasure to speak with you all today on this lovely fall evening…
…Frankly, as kind as Tim was to call me “brave” in my being here with you tonight, I have to admit, I don’t view it the same way. You see, I have the luxury of not being on the front lines. I get to advise. Right? I get to eat this amazing food with you and make speeches and chat with you and add my opinions.
But…while I’ve never been accused of having too little chutzpah…I would argue that it’s all of you out there who are the brave ones. It’s you who hold the responsibility of the United States’ economy in your hands. Not the lawmakers or economists or the media. They’re not in the trenches every day competing in a fierce global marketplace. It’s you who, against the whims of the market, stand or fall based on your intellect and dedication. The risks can be high. The pressure, fierce.
You know…there are very few people out there who will ever truly understand what it is the men and women in the financial industry accomplish on a day-to-day basis. Very few people in this world could possibly understand the intricacies or the demands that you encounter every day in your jobs.
And that’s fine. You know? Not everyone is capable or wants to see the sausage being made. But someone’s got to make it…even when they may sometimes be perceived as, “the bad guy.”
Mistakes happen. A few of you decided to take the same risks I cautioned against in the past, and failed. And, as much as I hate saying, “I told you so” the resulting crisis was enough to sour public perception on the financial services sector. It didn’t seem to matter that it was a relatively few individuals within the industry who participated in this risky behavior, nor did it seem to matter that much of the ensuing crisis resulted from the financially irresponsible actions of a vast number of citizens.
No. You’re on the front lines. You take the blame…
Reading these comments, some seem unsure of where to direct their barely suppressed outrage and blame. It’s simple: it belongs wholly to Atlanta Mayor Reed and his communications staff. It was their decision to outsource a run-of-the-mill Pro-Clinton article to a lobbyist. However, the fact that Johnson helped Reed in his campaign makes it less surprising that he’d pick him as a ghostwriter. Furthermore, it was Reed’s staff’s decision to willingly let a SuperPAC submit edits and fact checking. This is no scandal but just pure laziness by the Mayor. If he wants lobbyists and political committees to write his “opinions,” that’s on him.
Thank you for correcting the record ;)
When such frauds are systematically perpetrated all over the US, it moves from minor infractions to “racketeering.” There is a difference – even if one fails to admit or recognize it.
Hillary seems to bask and bathe in money and power.
For the love of money
Hillary will lie, Lord, she will cheat
For the love of money
Hillary don’t care who she hurt or beat
For the love of money
Hillary will sell out America
For a large piece of paper
It carries a lot of weight
Call it lean, mean, mean green
Almighty dollar….
~ ojays revised
Just another reason that Sanders should do NOTHING to help Clinton get elected. The “lesser of two evils”, is still so friggin corrupt – and I mean the Democratic Party, not just Hillary – that it, as well as the GOP need to be blown up.
this and so many reasons are why I will never vote for Shillery Clintock
My mind is blown.
Try visiting reddit.com/r/hillaryclinton and you’ll see that this story is nowhere to be seen, if you try to post it, you’ll be banned, and The Intercept is blocked from being submitted.
The truth has been forbidden and misinformation and the elites corporatized propaganda is being constantly pumped through the mass media. All traits of Fascism and oppression, and proof of their utter contempt for freedom of information, and democracy.
Not much mention of CIA-drug money yet in this election although Daniel Hopsicker has done a decent job exposing this Democrat corruption and Wayne Madsen also.
I protested the DNC in 1996 in Chicago so I got to see up close the imperialist army of cops in battalion formation waiting for attack orders against the 1st amendment of the people in the streets. Meanwhile the convention was a corporate elite “pigs at the trough” feeding frenzy.
Even the grassroots “get out the votes” nonprofits have been co-opted by the corporate Democrat money – making activist workers sign non-disclosure agreements that they can not discuss “personal politics” while working for the Democrats doing get of the vote work. Nice – at the most basic grassroots level already the Democratic party insists on gag rules against the 1st amendment.
Nader’s doc – “An Unreasonable Man” is another great expose on the corporate fascism of the Democratic party.
But most people watch the corporate media whether it’s National Petroleum Radio – Greg Palast did a nice expose on the Clinton’s getting Koch support a long time ago – so not too surprising it’s happening again.
The “fake” debates on NPR, CNN, MSNBC – the so called “liberal” media are the “good cops” of the imperialist war machine. People are easily mind-controlled by the incessant corporate war machine propaganda.
But students as “debt slaves” – imagine already before 20 years old students are so much in debt they will easily sell their souls to cling to the Democratic imperialist CIA war machine with the hopes it can provide some kind of corporate kickback job to pay off their student debts.
People see all the corrupt war machine wealth in D.C. and drool for some of the drippings to trickle down in the hopes of chasing the American Dream. The nonprofit I worked at got fined by the IRS for doing actual activism and so tried to hide it and then just took Democrat corporate “get out the vote” money instead. Professor Dana Fischer wrote a great expose book about this called “Activism, Inc.”
So even the “grassroots” activist organizers for SEIU and various environmental organizations like League of Conservation Voters – they all get swept into the corporate fascist CIA Democrat war machine of genocide.
So easily people of young, idealist good ideals are naively working hard sweat to prop up the genocidal U.S. war machine.
I worked overnight doing data entry Got out the vote work to get Keith Ellison elected – but even he had to vote for the war machine as part of a larger omnibus funding bill.
First thing politicians learn is they have to spend half their time dialing for dollars from the elite corporate-state rich who make $500,000 a year and so can donate the maximum amounts.
So the normal people don’t matter unless you make a real stink – occupy some offices. I occupied offices to protest the genocide in Iraq in 1998 and my U.S. Democrat rep Sabo voted against the war. But you gotta make a stink – doing civil disobedience. Not many can make that sacrifice since they are already debt slaves. The group who organized those war protests got infiltrated by an FBI informant and then the group got railroaded by the FBI raids to try to label the group as terrorists. Even I was secretly investigated by some corporate private spooks as a top “eco-terrorist” suspect – one of six nationally – and why? Because I was a “multi-sector activist” according to the research. Because I actually practiced my democratic Bill of Rights protections I was considered a terrorist suspect.
That’s right – people assume they live in a democracy but go ahead and try to practice your democratic rights and see what happens. I experienced sabotage, threats, physical harassment, phone taping, informants, etc. It is easy to get paranoid under such conditions.
Instead people try to go for “prestige” and labels and market themselves – kissing up to the elite at the get go. Corporate rule is against the constitution so that if anyone goes out into the public – unless you keep moving on a sidewalk you don’t have any constitutional rights. You go into a business and if you work there you don’t have the bill of rights protection. Like at the Mall of America they sued to get the protestors to pay for the police costs and the judge compromised by barring the protest organizers from going to the Mall and the Mall said they were happy they got the protest organizers barred.
When I went to the Mall to protest all their clothing made in slave wage sweatshops our one car of protesters – our group of people were surrounded by six security cop cars – and then our car had the tires slashed.
So that is the corporate fascism in action. I told Al Gore, vice president, when he was running for president – “everyone knows the CIA is complicit in the drug trade.” His secret service got real fidgety and said, “C’mon Al let’s go!” and I yelled from across the room – “The blood of the U’Wa is on your hands!” and then a cop pulled me over as I drove home. He asked for my license but never said why he pulled me over. He returned from his car with my license and said, “thanks.” Consider the mayor was there with Al Gore and Al Gore had a helicopter there for his fake staged rally – with corporate Democrat union signs backing him, etc. – I’m sure I was put on some list. haha.
very spot on
The “fake” debates on NPR, CNN, MSNBC – the so called “liberal” media are the “good cops” of the imperialist war machine.
check this out – msnbc has rachel tearing up Donald all the time. Moreso now. Why? She opposes him, ok. But if Trump is an obvious loser, why all the voracity? IMO, she is being played, pretending to be the good cop but helping the republicans shoe-horn in ROMNEY.
“The CIA came to Philly to meet with “Sparky” McLaughlin and his team more than once. Several CIA memoranda were produced and ultimately shown to those attending. They included a memorandum from the CIA Chief of Station (CoS) in the Dominican capital of Santo Domingo indicating that the PRD was the chosen and approved party of both Bill Clinton’s State Department and his CIA. Not only that, subsequent meetings revealed that as recently as December, 1994, Assistant Secretary of State Alex Watson had traveled to the DR to meet with PRD head Jose Francisco Pena-Gomez, Sparky’s number one drug dealer!”

As demonstrated on April 19, 2000 when Hillary Rodham Clinton’s “Senatorial campaign returned $22,000 to a businesswoman linked to Cuban drug smuggler Jorge Cabrera, this single documented instance of Al Gore receiving money from drug traffickers is not enough to indict the whole system. It does not completely establish that national political campaigns can no longer be conducted without drug money. Something more is needed.”
“Hopsicker also interviewed Iran-Contra insiders who told him that Democratic powerhouse attorney Richard Ben Veniste had – also in 1982 – incorporated a company named Trinity Oil for Barry Seal as a vehicle to launder Seal’s enormous cocaine cash flow. Clearly, by 1982 the Democratic Party had learned from watching the old OSS/CIA veterans who had acquired decades of drug dealing experience in Corsica, France, Vietnam, Laos, Korea, Thailand and Taiwan.”
In other words, the criminal empires will have to donate to or establish superpacs. Then, via lawyers, the criminals can let their candydates know who is doing what. It is looking to me as if the superpac deal is the way to score with the candy’s. Down the road, it may be the criminal organisations that back candydates more than the lobbyists and corporations because the criminals – including tax duckers – have way more money to throw out.
thanks for the info.
I wonder what Paul Krugman’s emails would reveal…
Hell hath no fury like a Crooked politician …….
— Benjamin J. Montalbano
Crooked is more Crooked than most Crooks ;-)
— General Hercules
how can we get these “paid ” lobbyists out of our Government??
Support public financing of campaigns. And vote for Sanders.
Exactly Right!
By electing leaders that don’t outsource “opinion” articles to ghostwriters and SuperPACs like this Mayor and his staff did.
Like when you vote for a candidate you can be sure that they won’t ever outsource articles to ghost writers or go on to publish a column written by lobbyists – what a dumb arse comment.
But heh maybe one can minimize the risk by not voting for Hillary.
Leading up to the primary, this same lobbyist was featured multiple times on the local NPR station, WABE, bashing Sanders and promoting Clinton. At no point did the station disclose Johnson’s conflict of interest, and it was never corrected, even after myself and others sent them multiple requests asking them to address it.
NPR is part of the problem. I recently stopped supporting them, they seem to be drinking from the corporate well lately.
Shoot, I gave up on NPR a couple years into Obama’s presidency when it seemed he could do no wrong no matter neocon and violent he became.
It’s not “lately.” PBS has been very pro-corporate and pro-war for over 20 years, if not longer. Once they started taking advertising (which they propaganistically called “underwriting”) they lost any semblance of credibility.
noticed that a lot lately
NPR is going off the rails
hint- the goldman sachs ads
NPR is just propaganda for the educated class. It’s the wolf in sheep’s clothing, pretending to be liberal or progressive while actually supporting corporate America and its empire.
Thank you for this. Now hopefully it will get the exposure it deserves.
We need a law regarding these paid professional writers (lobbyists). They need to acknowledge who they are, and reveal that they are being paid, just like the paid reviewers on Amazon must now do.
Just stellar reporting, Lee. Again and again.
I notice you didn’t attack the message. All you did was attack the messenger. Meaning, you did NOT dispute the message at all. What you did is dispute the messenger.
I have the feeling that’s implicit.
That’s because it was an opinion piece, not a piece of factual reporting. And it was an endorsement. It is the fact of the endorsement being written by a Hillary surrogate but signed by an elected official who did not reveal that relationship which is relevant. The surrogate’s ties to a PAC which is not allowed to coordinate with Hillary’s campaign is also important. The “facts” contained in the piece, not so much
So your position is that bias is irrelevant. In my world the source of an opinion, and an op ed is nothing but opinion, is highly relevant. As for facts, even if we assume complete factual corectness, an opinion is still nothing but a conclusion drawn from those facts. In that context bias is very important.
i noticed you did not attack the message. All you did was attack the messenger.
What else would you expect from a troll? The writing even looks the same. It’s probably a paid shill setting himself up and agreeing with himself under a different name.
Thank you, Lee Fang!
Ka$im Reed, a Clinton sellout a nd people vote against their own interst, like “one-issue platform– yea, addressing one issue, at a time, in depth and well is very good. Maybe that one issue makes ALL the difference? Living wage is FOR the single mother!
Perhaps calling him Ka-Ching Reed is fitting?
This is going to cause so much outrage when it makes the CBS evening news, CNN, etc. tonight on TV.
Hahaha…just kidding. Pretty sure it’s not going to be on TV tonight.
Many of the hosts on those channels have their daily scripts written by lobbyists, so it would be awkward for them to cover this story.
Just further demonstrates the crooked Clinton family working the voters. POS. .. all of them. Screw Clinton. . I will write sanders for President. I won’t vote for that lying skank just because she is a dem. Go Bernie
Sad, really.
Ended subscription to an over-the-wire-canned-lock-step-editorials and kill-’em-all newsprint publication at least a decade ago in that the overt warmongering and serf-steering became unworthy of sacrifice of trees-into-newsprint – except as firestarter… Seemingly endless propaganda for a sadly, sadly, tragically shopworn Millennial version of Nazism, Hate Speech and Hail Der Fuhrer and The Homeland while putting the full “Court Press” on whatever target du jour that supported Empire Run By Criminals taking deeper, more invasive hold on the globe. What’s the expression? ” …The bigger the lie, the more they believe it” ?
shamefull… the only thing hilly is consistant about is corruption.

Virtually everything we’ve been told about health care is wrong. Please read this paper, which shows the real problems screwing up HRC’s (Obama,, Bush, Clinton’s) policy. Something she won’t talk about. Similar issues exist in other areas. Europe is talking about this, and the people are pushing for the creating of carve outs for important areas in trade policy- why arent we?
The paper below is about conflicts between the 1994 GATS trade agreement and its progeny, TiSA – and US Health Care Policy.
http://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/summary?doi=10.1.1.405.5725
te bottom documents fill in some of the blanks- for example, one shows the problems faced by the states- this all has been covered up. The other explains a bad definition which dooms public services- including public education.

http://www.iatp.org/files/GATS_and_Public_Service_Systems.htm
You should also write about how these trade deals are a global swap of jobs for concessions. They plan to give jobs in develped countries away low bidding corporations in LDCs to divide and conquer everybody, this is to preserve their failing criminal business models, instead of letting the world see the benefits of automation which should be shared, letting wages for good people everywhere rise.
well done, if only this would be mentioned by the mass media, that would be great.
And this is how American voters are manipulated and deceived. That CNN would involve itself in this editing process by providing “pre-publication” fact checking is outrageous. Kasim Reed should be ashamed of himself. Politicians will sell out their people in a second when it comes to their own power, stature, and access.
I’ve got to wonder why a self-proclaimed feminist has such sleazy guys working for her? Nick Merrill, David Brock, Sydney Blumenthal–they are all as slick as her Willie.
Not sure why pre-publication fact checking is outrageous, the media should be doing more of it before publishing anyones lies. I’m actually surprised CNN did any.
Yeah, how dare they try to uphold some kind of factual accountability!! If I say the sky is purple, by god it is.
I think his point was that CNN basically helped write the propaganda.
Lee Fang continues to demonstrate how smart The Intercept was to hire him. He asks the right questions, and clearly has an ability to get sources that give him the inside scoop on the DNC et al.’s machinations.
Keep it up Mr. Fang!
Agreed. Nice job, Lee.
Yet another reason I pray daily for Hillary to drop dead of a stroke.
Naturally, nothing will come of this unless the Democratic Party is personally offended by it, which it isn’t because DNC=HRC. It’s clear why people are fleeing both parties and going independent.
It’s past time for them to either change or die.
Good work, Fang.
Here’s one perfect example of the left-right spectrum.
Jill Stein, Green Party Candidate calls for an IMMEDIATE ARMS EMBARGO against the Saudis and the Sunni Gulf State Monarchies.
Meanwhile, Hilary is the recent #1 arms broker to the most misogynistic patriarchy on the face of the planet.
http://www.ibtimes.com/clinton-foundation-donors-got-weapons-deals-hillary-clintons-state-department-1934187
Jill Stein represents the left end of the spectrum, while Hillary represents the right.
Trump falls somewhere in the middle.
Oh, the irony…
Yes, Clinton and Trump would be equally awful in different ways and on different issues. And while I will be voting for Stein, she stands no chance of being elected.
I think Sanders should seriously consider running a an independent campaign like Ross Perot did. He would definitely need a lot of money and to ensure that he’s included in the debates, but if he could get those two things he’d have a decent chance of getting elected. He has a large majority of the independent vote, which is about 50% of the electorate, and the more progressive Democrats would also vote for him. But he can’t do this unless he can get the money and the TV exposure in the debates.
Probably 10% of all writing is produced by the nominal author. Of the rest, about one third is plagiarism and about two thirds is ghost writing. This may appear surprising, but most authors don’t have any incentive to advertise that someone else produced their work.
If Super-PACs are now funding news articles, this is good news for the journalism profession, which has been searching for a business model that allows them to earn a decent living. The exact title ‘journalist’ or ‘lobbyist’ is not that important, so long as you get to produce vital, creative work. In our celebrity obsessed culture, the public demands the name of someone famous on the byline. But that shouldn’t diminish the creative satisfaction of having produced a good article.
It’s refreshing to read an article painting such a bright picture for the future of journalism.

Which Super-PAC do you work for? And how much did they pay you for that comment?
The PAC for Math Illiteracy, apparently.
Benghazi Research Center is perhaps Brock/Clinton affiliated; may have been listed in that link, but failed to find.
It confirms what DNC has become. I’m done with this party which is owned by the money and works for the money. No surprise Clinton is its favorite. On top of that, the DNC is worse than the RNC. The latter is at least blatently for the rich but the DNC pretends as if it works for the middle and working class Americans.
I left the DNC a long time ago, specifically when Dems acquired the Senate majority during Bush’s presidency and refused to put an end to the Iraq War. They didn’t even demand receipts for all the money that was being handed out and they wouldn’t speak out about torture and put a stop to it. Instead, they all rushed to the center, a refuge for cowards.
And now Debbie WS openly takes $70K from the payday lending industry and promotes predatory lending. Who are these people?
the sociopaths we elected
because our people in power still have to be rich manipulators, for some circular reason
In high school history about 1970, we were taught that Republicans represent the conservative faction of corporate America and Democrats represent the liberal faction of it. This is nothing new, it’s just gotten worse since Bill Clinton and his buddies further corporatized the Democratic Party shortly before his election in 1992.
Here is an article that looks at Bernie Sanders’ very cogent foreign policy:
http://viableopposition.blogspot.ca/2016/03/bernie-sanders-cogent-foreign-policy.html
Mr. Sanders has a decades-long record of clearly understanding America’s role on the global stage, far better than the ex-Secretary of State.
Another great piece as always Lee, thanks for all your hard work!
Wish I could say I was more surprised, but this is what the DNC has become :(
I continue to be astounded by people who expect the news to be their surprise party.
How is this acceptable in our country? The Clinton campaign, and her coordinated PAC, are literally acting as mouthpieces for corporations.
My guess is either apathy or an active effort by the perpetrators to hide their efforts… or both.
Articles on David Brock:
• http://www.nytimes.com/politics/first-draft/2015/10/22/clinton-super-pac-responded-to-benghazi-hearings-with-research-center-and-a-flurry-of-news-releases/?_r=0
• http://dailycaller.com/2016/01/28/sanders-is-furious-at-david-brock-hillarys-loyal-servant-and-spin-master/
I’ve suspected that on social media sites (LinkedIn, FaceBook, etc.) there are superpac trolls, usually folks with legal backgrounds who try to counter opposition speech.
Reading the history on Brock is interesting; sheds some light on U.S. politics
I’ve been spotting one faction of facebook Correct the Record trolls. They all use accounts that were produced automatically in the last couple of years (probably bought from Ukrainian hackers) and have few or no friends. Typically, they only have likes and follow pro-Hillary groups and sites, and the particular trolls I have been spotting have digitally altered green, purple & blue bird photos for avatars. They might even be color negatives (I am not a photography expert).
I assume this is so they can spot each other, and can think of no other reason that they should be so distinct.
Maybe one day David Brock will have a ‘Blinded by the Clintons’ moment of clarity and write another tell-all about this organization and it’s dirty dealings… before perhaps resurfacing again as a dung-slurping character assassin for whatever ascendant power is closest-by.
Words can’t properly express the depths of my hatred for this woman.
