Donald Trump’s speech accepting the Republican nomination for president will probably go down as one of the most frightening pieces of political rhetoric in U.S. history.
Even for people who believe the danger of genuine authoritarianism on the U.S. right is often exaggerated, it’s impossible not to hear in Trump’s speech echoes of the words and strategies of the world’s worst leaders.
Trump had just one message for Americans: Be afraid. You are under terrible threats from forces inside and outside your country, and he’s the only person who can save us.
The scariest part is how Trump subtly but clearly has begun melding together violence against U.S. police and terrorism: “The attacks on our police, and the terrorism in our cities,” he said, “threaten our very way of life.”
This is the favorite and most dangerous message of demagogues across all space and time. After all, if we know our external enemies are deeply evil, and our internal enemies are somehow their allies, we can feel justified in doing anything at all to our internal enemies. That’s just logic.
And if anything, Trump’s speech is actually more terrific, fabulous and huge than those of previous fanatics, since he promises he’s going to fix everything overnight. “The crime and violence that today afflicts our nation will soon — and I mean very soon — come to an end,” Trump says. “Beginning on January 20th of 2017, safety will be restored.”
This use of fear to destroy democracy is so old that it’s described exactly in Plato’s Republic, written in Ancient Greece around 380 B.C.
Tyranny, says Socrates in The Republic, is actually “an outgrowth of democracy.” And would-be tyrants always in every instance claim to be shielding regular people from terrible danger: “This and no other is the root from which a tyrant springs; when he first appears above ground he is a protector.”
Trump said that he is going to “protect” Americans or some aspect of American life 13 times tonight.
That makes sense, since as he portrayed the world, we desperately need protecting:
Nearly 180,000 illegal immigrants with criminal records, ordered deported from our country, are tonight roaming free to threaten peaceful citizens. …
Egypt was turned over to the radical Muslim brotherhood. … Iran is on the path to nuclear weapons. …
This is the legacy of Hillary Clinton: death, destruction, terrorism and weakness. …
My plan will begin with safety at home – which means safe neighborhoods, secure borders, and protection from terrorism. …
I have joined the political arena so that the powerful can no longer beat up on people who cannot defend themselves. …
America was shocked to its core when our police officers in Dallas were brutally executed. … I have a message to every last person threatening the peace on our streets and the safety of our police: When I take the oath of office next year, I will restore law and order to our country. …
We must also address the growing threats we face from outside America. …
Men, women and children viciously mowed down. Lives ruined. Families ripped apart. … Only weeks ago, in Orlando, Florida, 49 wonderful Americans were savagely murdered by an Islamic terrorist. …
We Will Make America Safe Again.
As The Republic explains, leaders like this inevitably end up “standing up in the chariot of State with the reins in his hand, no longer protector, but tyrant absolute.” This is how liberty “passes into the harshest and bitterest form of slavery.”
The good news is that if you turn off cable news — apparently the only source of Donald Trump’s knowledge about the world — and go outside, you’ll find that the U.S. is probably safer today than it’s ever been.
Despite the misleading statistics Trump used again tonight, the rate of murder and crime overall remains far, far lower than in the past. You also don’t need to worry about ISIS: even after the massacre of 49 people in Orlando, it’s likely more Americans will be killed by bee stings in 2016 than by terrorism.
Nonetheless, anyone who knows anything about the past must be genuinely worried that a major party could nominate someone like Trump. As the German philosopher Hegel famously said 200 years ago, “What experience and history teach is this — that people and governments never have learned anything from history.”
So many people think Trump makes sense. He makes no sense.
The population of illegal immigrants is dropping, not rising.
Crime rates are at an all time low.
Terrorism kills far less people than traffic accidents. (I don’t see many people obeying the speed limit these days)
The world is, by and large, at peace, but if we leave NATO it definitely won’t be.
I don’t need Trump to protect me from anyone. I just hope Americans will do the right thing and protect the world from Trump.
FDR is considered to be one of America’s greatest president, yet he violated the constitutional rights of around 120,000 Japanese-Americans, about 70% of which were citizens, and herded them into concentration camps. Their property was then sold at bargain basement prices to other American citizens. Of course, many decades later, they were finally paid reparations for their confiscated property but at only a small percentage on the dollar for the original price of their property. So I don’t have to go back to Plato to see that tyranny can arise in the mob from a democracy whipped by fear.
I disagree.
Trump is for the American people more than Hilary Clinton.
Trump will protect us-from the corrupt leaders in Washington, the deals that hurt everyday Americans, health epidemics ( Ebola, Zika, ) , refugee crisis, and the list goes on and on. We can’t afford another Democrat in office.
Plus she stayed married to a cheating man which equals a miserable woman, not the type of person I want running our country. Misery loves company.
Look @ what she has done to other countries!!
This is Trump: (But Shillery is much more corrupt)
In demolishing the Bonwit Teller building to make way for Trump Tower, you had no labor troubles, even though only about 15 unionists worked at the site alongside 150 Polish men, most of whom entered the country illegally, lacked hard hats, and slept on the site.
How did you manage to avoid labor troubles, like picketing and strikes, and job safety inspections while using mostly non-union labor at a union worksite — without hard hats for the Polish workers?
A federal judge later found you conspired to cheat both the Polish workers, who were paid less than $5 an hour cash with no benefits, and the union health and welfare fund. You testified that you did not notice the Polish workers, whom the judge noted were easy to spot because they were the only ones on the work site without hard hats.
What should voters make of your failure or inability to notice 150 men demolishing a multi-story building without hard hats?
You sent your top lieutenant, lawyer Harvey I. Freeman, to negotiate with Ken Shapiro, the “investment banker” for Nicky Scarfo, the especially vicious killer who was Atlantic City’s mob boss, according to federal prosecutors and the New Jersey State Commission on Investigation.
Since you emphasize your negotiating skills, why didn’t you negotiate yourself?
You later paid a Scarfo associate twice the value of a lot, officials determined.
Since you boast that you always negotiate the best prices, why did you pay double the value of this real estate?
You were the first person recommended for a casino license by the New Jersey Attorney General’s Division of Gaming Enforcement, which opposed all other applicants or was neutral. Later it came out in official proceedings that you had persuaded the state to limit its investigation of your background.
Why did you ask that the investigation into your background be limited?
You were the target of a 1979 bribery investigation. No charges were filed, but New Jersey law mandates denial of a license to anyone omitting any salient fact from their casino application.
Why did you omit the 1979 bribery investigation?
The prevailing legal case on license denials involved a woman, seeking a blackjack dealer license, who failed to disclose that as a retail store clerk she had given unauthorized discounts to friends.
In light of the standard set for low-level license holders like blackjack dealers, how did you manage to keep your casino license?
In 1986 you wrote a letter seeking lenient sentencing for Joseph Weichselbaum, a convicted marijuana and cocaine trafficker who lived in Trump Tower and in a case that came before your older sister, Judge Maryanne Trump Barry of U.S. District Court in Newark, New Jersey, who recused herself because Weichselbaum was the Trump casinos and Trump family helicopter consultant and pilot.
Why did you do business with Weichselbaum, both before and after his conviction?
Trump Tower is not a steel girder high rise, but 58 stories of concrete.
Why did you use concrete instead of traditional steel girders?
Trump Tower was built by S&A Concrete, whose owners were “Fat” Tony Salerno, head of the Genovese crime family, and Paul “Big Paul” Castellano, head of the Gambinos, another well-known crime family.
If you did not know of their ownership, what does that tell voters about your management skills?
You later used S&A Concrete on other Manhattan buildings bearing your name.
Why?
DON’T BE A FOOL!!!!! Trump is out for himself and his people only. The real problem is that Hillary makes Trump look like a local running numbers on the corner compared to her dealings.
Trump is a loose cannon. Who knows what he will do, no one! He has no self-control. He is thin-skinned and easily offended. He lashes out. He does not understand that being President of a country is not the same as being President of a Real Estate Firm. For him it’s just another notch in his belt. Another “I did it, I am the best, I am the king” moment. He has also shown himself unwilling to listen to anyone but himself – in his mind, he channels the nation, he is its voice, he is the only one that can save it !
It’s one thing, as President of a Real Estate Company, to bully, crush and bury your opponents, insult and accuse them, renege on deals, go bankrupt, spread rumors, rabble rouse, pit people against each other, fire them! But it’s entirely another when it’s nation, country and world you want to wheel, deal & control. He’s the recipe for disaster.
I disagree. Trump is on the money and I think that scares people who tend to bleed the colors through the lines to much.
Not all muslims are bad, got ya. But, you are literally talking about less then 1% of 1.6 billion muslims. No offense, but those sharia law loving cunts can stay the fuck out and keep jerking their camels off. These people are the likeliest to become radicalized after landing here. Increasing immigration of these shitlords is not how you protect America, it’s how you contribute to America’s destruction.
The statement that the world is a safer place is laughable. Medically, yeah it’s safer, for now. That’s gonna change soon when bacteria and virus’s catch up to our level of medical science. Say hello to drug resistant infections, virus’s.
Violence wise? Nope. Before you even touch violence, their are more babies aborted every year then gun violence deaths. Regardless if you wanna count that, the people who die to car crashs, industrial accidents, violence is pretty massive. Sure, we may not have conflicts everywhere, but the amount of people killed alone through technological advances is probably more then what people used to be killed through via conflict
What you find, so frequently, is that folks base the language of a dictator on the language of a dictator, or a strong man, from some other country. America is not some other country! Trump would become a dictator, or a strong man, for those of wealth the second he got elected! It is his way of doing business, and he knows nothing about democracy except neoliberalism! Clinton would be no better! Ignorance has turned into a pandemic!
There seems to be a growing meme that we have to vote for hillary to keep trump out by all means necessary. Those who refuse to vote for either are not villains or spoilers or enablers. There is one group only to blame if Trump somehow get’s this and that is the DNC. They, and Clinton are the ones who will have to shoulder the blame for Trump’s “election.”
This is the first election we have a shot of getting this to the House of Reps. If Gary Johnson can win Utah and New Mexico he has a shot of keeping both Shrillery and Trump from getting 270.
You know Paul Ryan (another person that make me sick to my stomach) would never let Trump or Shrillary win in the House.
But then we would just get another establishment oligarch.
I thought the defining moment of the Trump speech was his acknowledgement of the claps he got when he spoke up for the LGBT community. His sincerity and humility shone right through. That I thought is when we got a glimpse of the real Trump.
But not a mention of this anywhere …
Hillary Clinton gained experience assisting coups in Honduras in 2009. She put that experience to use in Libya in 2011 to overthrow Ghaddafi and thrust Libya into turmoil that has killed 10s of thousands of Libyans, gave both ISIS and Al Qaida footholds in the country, and generated 100s of thousands of refugees. Just think how much evil Clinton can bring to the world as US President. Yet the author of this drivel finds Trump terrifying?
so your response to his message of fear is…a message of fear. again, two points that seem simple but no one seems to grasp:
1. the president is a figurehead. a corporate middle manager that provides the facade of democracy. they only “accomplish” what their owners in the private sector let them “accomplish”.
2. sticks and stones may break my bones but words are meaningless bullshit cooked up by a speech writer based on polling data. since when has any convention speech matched the actual agenda of ther person giving it? what percentage of obama’s speeches have ended up being lies or obfuscations? hard to say since no one remembers them in the first place. trump, like bush, just moves his “freedom”, terror”, “enemies”, and “safe” fridge magnets around to form sentences and stresses the scarier words for effects.
also: trump, like hillary but to a slightly less egregious degree, goes where the politcal winds are blowing. look at his israel “policy” and how he folded like superman on laundry day the second adelson threw blood money in his face.
No, Trump is a real fascist. He is extremely dangerous and he is not controlled by Wall Street bankers like Hillary, and he appeals to the very worst in the American electorate. He reminds me of George Wallace in 1968. Clinton reminds me of Nixon. Sanders reminds me of Hubert Humphrey.
Greg Grandin has an excellent article outlining Donald Trump’s speech in The Nation, titled “There’s Nothing Un-American About Donald Trump.” https://www.thenation.com/article/theres-nothing-un-american-about-donald-trump/
Just ask the families of those who have died…Paris,Germany,Brussels,Dallas,Baton Rouge, San Bernadino, Orlando Florida…and on and on…the only place the birds are chirping and the sun in shining in on planet Oboma…unfortunately he is the only one that resides there!!!
Ask all the families of those who have died how they feel…Dallas, Baton Rouge, Kansas, Paris,Germany,San Bernadino…and on and on….The only place where the sun shines and the birds are chirping in on planet Oboma…unfortunately he is the only one that resides there!!!!!
The salient fact is that Trump is not a war criminal while Hillary is based on her role in spearheading the war to overthrow Khaddafi in Libya and replace him with jihadi thugs. Another almost as important key fact is that Clinton’s VP choice is one of the spearheads of the TPP “trade” agreement which replaces the rule of law in business cases with corporate arbitrators paid for by parasitic corporate interests. Anyone shilling for such a pile of excrement stink of it themselves.

Scary Jon? Seriously? Go find a safe space, and don’t forget your pacifier and your teddy bear.
Below a Trump defender writes:
Yes indeed, the “common man” is on the rise, the “man” who rejects what all those point-headed academics, scientists and professionals have to say.
Trump is not merely anti-elitist; he’s anti-intellectual, as are many, many of his supporters. Anti-elitist is not coterminous with anti-intellectual. The latter is a hallmark of fascist tendencies.
As one historian puts it:
That’s it. I don’t agree with all this historian writes, but on that he’s accurate.
Bernie Sanders is anti-elitist, not anti-intellectual. Sanders is also the farthest thing from a fascist. Trump, not so much.
Good post.
Intellectualism has never been a staple of the GOP. And being anti political isn’t inherently anti-intellectual.
As if intellectualism would solve all of our problems.
I believe it is the source.
The “State” as nanny, only leads to your fascism; Bernie is a skier on that slope …
I don’t know what to make of this craziness. For Trump’s second big deal with the New York with his father’s company, he convinces bankers by going to the mayor and having the mayor say “What the Trumps want, the Trumps get in this town!” And that included 40 years of not paying any taxes because, as Trump put it, he “didn’t ask for 50″!
So how can ANYONE come saying that Trump is a “populist” and Trump is “anti-elitist”??? Trump is all about getting down on your goddamn knees and praying to the Massa because anything in your sad little life that isn’t total shit comes from the Massa, and there is no God but God and the Massa is his prophet!
The author of this piece is incredibly stupid. We are safer now more than ever? Yea, just like Israel was safe under the iron dome while it was shooting down hundreds of Qassam rockets that were fired in their direction. This isn’t safe; this is war. Do you know how hard the intelligence community has had to work to spoil the hundreds of ACTIVE terror threats over the last 8 years? And how about France? How “safe” are they? The only reason we haven’t been hit again like we were hit on 9/11 is because the best offense is a good defense, and our shields are active and are up. But don’t let that fool you ignorant journalist; just because you don’t see missiles overhead doesn’t mean they aren’t being fired at you; there very well may be someone between you and them shooting them down. You are a fool to think that ducking behind a shield makes you somehow “safe.” No idiot; you’re being shot at! You aren’t going to be safe until you deal with the threat at the source, and crying “hater” at people who tell you the truth doesn’t make the threat go away.
Speeches.
The US and much of the West has become a shallow culture that praises or condemns speeches! If the New Deal hadn’t happened, Roosevelt’s mere *speeches* about improving would look pretty damn hollow. JFK’s “we choose to do these things because they are hard” wouldn’t look so good now if no one tried to get to the moon, and Obama should seriously feel like a phony big mouth for all his “this is the day the sea levels stop rising” and waxing philosophical about peace before taking office, tripling the troops in Afghanistan (sure he doesn’t approve of ground wars, sure, sure), bombing the hell out of Libya, droning Somalia and Yemen, continuing his dirty wars in Africa, bombing Iraq and Syria and backing a fascist coup in Ukraine.
A speech is only as good as it means anything, and all establishment politicians in truth say one thing only:
Speeches! Blow raspberries at *all* establishment politicians. Stop giving them the dignity of your sincere attention and measured assessment, for their phoniness and manipulation is beneath contempt.
Go Maisie!
Here and there, among the inundation of idiot and assholes, we have some truly fine contributors down here, below the line. You are definitely one of the latter.
Thanks, Doug!
Not the whole truth and nothing but the truth, but a whole hell of a lot of the truth. If Trump wins it will be by the hand of a few swing voters that see his “style” as the best “poison pill” to all the above you have well stated. Not for Trump but against more of the same.
I think this piece is a bit over-heated, and so actually sabotages itself, with this kind of thing:
I mean, that has been the standard stump speech of every U.S. presidential candidate since World War II and probably all the way back to 1776. It’s also the basis of alpha-male tribal leadership going back to human prehistory.
Let’s take liberal icon John F. Kennedy, who famously campaigned against the Eisenhower Administration on a “missile gap” with the Soviet Union. This should sound familiar, from Oct 18. 1960:
I mean, it’s like something Donald Trump might have said too, right? But was JFK a “terrifying historical figure?” Or just another politician flogging the normal American military-industrial complex line?
Sometimes, overstating an argument with exaggerated statements does more to discredit that argument than it does to promote it.
“probably all the way back to 1776″
There are several similar quotes from James Madison. Can’t trace down exactly what document he says something similar. They just quote him as the source.
http://www.constitution.org/jm/jm_quotes.htm
yes. jfk was so terrifying that some unknown parties had to have him killed. remember?
I love a political writer who quotes Socrates on tyranny when an apt example presently exists as the Obama administration and the central control of Big Government. At first I though Mr Schwarz had written a piece of political satire, but left field is a very big place.
Just out of curiosity, does your concern of Big Government factor in the military spending component of our federal government?
No. I am aware that the military percentage of the budget has been steadily shrinking. Go find the pie charts. Payments to individuals (entitlements) have steadily grown and now far exceed military spending. My concern isn’t budgetary, although $19 trillion debt makes the Fed keep interest low or the house of cards collapses. A bigger worry is the loss of personal freedoms and economic controls emanating from the regulatory society centered in the 61 square miles of largess named the District of Columbia. Mr Obama uses federal agencies like a club against those who oppose his progressive vision. ..EPA, AG, IRS, Common Core, etc, etc… We are a nation founded on individual liberties, not programatic responses to progressive advocacy groups, which is the current MO of Mr Obama.
Military spending for the fiscal year 2015 was 598 billion dollars.
Military Spending in the United States
I suggest you spend the rest of the summer reading US history. The US was not founded on personal liberties but rather on corporatist and statism. Read your Constitution. Also, I am going to assume you prefer drinking foul water and ‘breathing’ foul airV
Oh,no,Americans are cool calm and collected. My wife works in a mall, she is not cool calm or collected. Ah,the fruits of the war of terror and blowback. And Trump is the only one who sees that, and that our stupid idiotic RtP shite is as productive as seppeku in killing US,and our future.
We love terror. It makes US feel alive.Sheesh.
And I think assassinating police officers does ring the terror bell,if not an Arab or Muslim one.
I’m so glad you’re terrified, jon schwarz jon schwarz. You’re probably some upper class twit who went to Yale or NYU and your folks bought you a beemer to go to college in and helped you get your job through their friends in the spliberal establishment. You need to be scared of Trump. Your species will soon be extinct.
Unlike most progressive intellectuals, including academics and political elites in the Western world, Mr Trump has common sense on his side and his finger on the pulse of millions of ordinary citizens who vote. Perhaps the writers here are somehow immune from the woes of modern living for so many, but they must surely feel the decline of statism and political correctness, a bad combination that has had adverse impact on so many. Yes, people are fearful and frustrated and have ample reason to feel that way. Illegals DO have very high rates of violent crime. Unvetted Muslims are indeed a risk. Trade giveaways have lined the pockets of the donor class and diminished the middle class. Lobbyists and Wall Street have corrupted politics in general and Hillary specifically. The sophisticated and self-righteous who would control every human event have no understanding of what is happening right in front of their faces. Populism is in, elitism is out. Trump is not a candidate or a Republican. He is a movement and you better use those upper decile brains to figure it out. The ordinary man is mad as hell and definitely on the rise.
You are spot on, dear Doctor. Unfortunately we’re seeing The Intercept_ move toward the mainstream as they bury their collective skulls in the sand. Pity.
Very good and accurate post.
Your absolutely right. They really angry and much, much greater than most people think..
Pardon, but is not an unvetted past, present OR future “indeed a risk”?
Unvetted goldfish? …
Excellent post!
Your posts are as correct in their content as they are brilliant in their bearing; thank you drofmanythings.
Your posts are as correct in their content as they are brilliant in their bearing; truly a joy to read. Thank you drofmanythings.
And so the “ordinary man” turns to a sociopath, a con artist who cheats, stiffs working people out of money he owes them, makes a mockery out of bankruptcy procedures, makes up bullshit lies out of whole cloth, openly demonstrates his contempt for any notion of fair play, self-aggrandizes himself constantly, dog whistles racists and white supremacists, approves of disastrous republican tax policy that has created unprecedented economic inequality from which he benefits enormously while the gullible stooges who praise and vote for him get screwed again. You might be right though, “He is a movement,” and the movement of Lemmings comes to mind.
I thought Trump’s speech was very like early Fidel Castro in length, tone and content, but differing enemies.
Takes an American ear to hear a Communist instead of a Fascist in Trump.
I am old enough to remember HITLER’S speeches….Trump sounds just like him, a true Fascist……The USA is in trouble big time if he gets elected.
You don’t have the tiniest glimmer, lost in the densest of fogs, about the content or meaning of Fidel’s early speeches.
Castro, in his heyday would typically speak 5 or 6 hours. He still holds the United Nations record, speaking for 4 hours, 29 minutes. His personal best is 7 hours and 10 minutes. Trump isn’t even close to that. Compared to Castro, Trump was brief. The content of Trump compared to Castro is very different too. Castro spoke mostly about Communism and hatred for he United States. Trump spoke last night about freedom, liberty, free enterprise, and love for the United States and its people. The biggest difference though was that Castro spoke in Spanish, and Trump spoke in English.
“What Now, Little Man? ”
(This timeless book title needs an update to include equally small american female fascists, as seen here on TI’s SocPup thread.)
You need to update your stats. The latest FBI numbers for 2015 show that violent crime is up significantly! I would speculate it has a great deal to do with undermining the police since the latest round of race-mongering. Murder and rape were up 6.2% and 9.6%, which is a huge reversal in a downward trend in recent decades. Here is what the FBI says:
“All of the offenses in the violent crime category—murder and non-negligent manslaughter, rape (revised definition), rape (legacy definition), aggravated assault, and robbery—showed increases when data from the first six months of 2015 were compared with data from the first six months of 2014. The number of rapes (legacy definition) increased 9.6 percent, the number of murders increased 6.2 percent, aggravated assaults increased 2.3 percent, the number of rapes (revised definition) rose 1.1 percent, and robbery offenses were up 0.3 percent.”
https://www.fbi.gov/news/pressrel/press-releases/fbi-releases-preliminary-semiannual-crime-statistics-for-2015
Is the assertion here that black people demanding that they not be summarily executed with impunity undermines the police?
The police undermine themselves by engaging in such conduct.
Violent crime is up because wealth disparity is exacerbated and the political system has been corrupted to encourage that.
Is your assertion that it’s okay to assassinate cops? I assume that your answer is “No”, which is the same answer to your question. Just like we can’t blame all black people for what a few have done, we can’t blame all police either.
But it is a fact that with the blanket criticism that all police are racist, they are undermined in doing their job. The race-mongering comes when you assume that every time an unarmed black person is shot, it is because of racism.
NO ONE thinks that shooting an unarmed person without justification is okay, no matter their color. But we can’t talk about the problem without polarizing the issue by saying that police are doing this because they are racist.
Here is an article about the “Ferguson Effect” where the FBI director talks about it: http://nypost.com/2016/05/24/the-ferguson-effect-is-fueling-a-growing-crime-wave/
And about wealth inequality…. why hasn’t Obama fixed that already?
Once more cops are killed by civilians than innocent civilians summarily executed by cops, you might have a point.
But the numbers right now are thousands to one in favor cops summarily executing citizens.
Thousands to 1 summarily executed? You really need to do more research on this.
Here is a start: http://www.washingtonpost.com/sf/investigative/wp/2015/12/26/2015/12/26/a-year-of-reckoning-police-fatally-shoot-nearly-1000/
Most people shot and killed by police have weapons so those shouldn’t be taken into account. Last year only 90 unarmed people were killed by police, of those, 36 were black men, and not all of those 36 died at the hands of white police officers. Furthermore, you can not assume that all of those shootings were unjustified. If the person is physically threatening someone else or charging the police officer (to take their gun) then it can be right to shoot an unarmed person.
Guess what the same article says that 36 police officers died in the line of duty last year. So you may want to rethink things a bit.
The FBI: one stop shop for all the facts… and innocuous-citizen-stalkers, gaslighters, rat-patriots, and bomb making materials plus logistics when quotas need fulfilling.
They even serve pizza if you are on the delivery list.
No mention of abortion, LGBTQ presented in a favorable light at a Republican Party convention acceptance speech.
That does not ring historical alarm bells.
Donald Trump is not a liar. He’s a bullshit artist, of the same sort that all strongmen have been.
Trump sees virtue in simply making it up to stoke the prejudices he panders to:
I’m not a huge fan of Jeet Heer’s, but that article is spot on. Heer is almost certainly a Clinton supporter (but as a Canadian he can’t vote for her), and I dislike many of his analyses. But not that one.
What? Trump is not a liar…..you better tell Kitt that. He was all-up-in-my-face about that the other day. lol.
Ask Doug. So much for idols.
Kitt is a very smart and perceptive guy. He’s likely simply not making the distinction between a liar on the one hand, and the bullshit artist on the other. (I also didn’t grasp this difference until I read Heer’s piece.)
Manfiestly, Donald Trump utters many, many falsehoods.
“Smart and perceptive guy”
I’ll reserve judgment on that. I have negative recollections of him from Salon.com activities a few years ago.
I think you are not quite aware of some newly discovered phenomena called Quantum Superposition and Entangled Universes. A few years back an experiment was performed by a chap called Schroedinger who catches hold of Mr Kitten and throws him into a box containing radioactive particles. After this horrible act he told us that Mr Kitten is both dead and alive at the same time, and funnily enough the whole scientific community agreed (except of course Einstein who usually disagreed with everyone including Newton).
The Schroedinger Kitt n Experiment proved beyond the scope of any decent scientific argument that the wave function of reality collapses to a finite space-time characteristic depending on how you observe it. So please give Mr Trump the benefit of having an entirely different perspective in relation to Your Royal Highness since what he perceives might be quite different from what you do, but nonetheless just as true.
Trump is worse than Hitler,he eats meat and his son kills animals.
I saw a confident correct appraisal of our ills and a recipe for recovery.
Calling out an obvious corrupt media and current administration, exemplified by the fix for the hillaryous one, would get cheers from rational non biased Americans.
So would the recognition the obvious terrible affliction all these trade steals have done to US workers, and stupid regime change catastrophes,to US and the world, along with critiques of Russophobic nonsense would also elicit sympathy, but nah,not from American self haters.
Absolutely pitiful and pathetic, but what else is new?
Obomba says Mexican jobs help American workers.
Boy,are historians going to have fun with him.
Which reminds me a few weeks ago a new biography of the shrub came out.The lying times said, regretfully,it didn’t treat him well.Ha.
your statement is irrelevant! On what ground do you conclude that? Media propaganda? Just review all what he has done and review all what Hillary has done, you will see that you are pathetic in your conclusion
Being excited or concerned over Trump’s speech is as stupid as being excited or concerned over Obama’s oratory. Obama doesn’t want your guns, and Trump isn’t a fascist. They’re just actors, like Clinton, trying to say whatever will keep the illusion of choice going.
Stop agreeing with the elite that all a presidential race is about is choosing a cultural emblem FOR THE SAME DAMN ESTABLISHMENT.
Establishment politicians reading carefully scripted words deserve only our scorn, whatever they say.
Jill Stein will suit me fine.
Trump got it perfectly right regarding all the Islamic refugees. See what happened in Nice and what is happening today in Munich.
I am against bombing Muslims in Iraq and Syria. They should sort out their problems. At the same time they should stay in their own countries and not create nuisance by coming here.
The killer/driver of the truck in Nice was not a Syrian. The Paris attackers were not Syrian. The mixed up gay shooter in Orlando was not a Syrian. The San Bernardino shooters were not Syrian. The innocent 84 refugees fleeing ISIS that were killed by a U.S. air strike were in fact Syrian.
It sounds like you are infected with Trumpitis. You’d better get that taken care of. I’m sure there is a qualified shrink nearby that can prescribe some mental medication for your condition.
The whole ME,from Pakistan to Turkey too Morocco don’t like US.(other than bribees).
We have affected just about every one of these nations through regime change, dictator support,or brutal invasion.
Syria is just the latest, and they haven’t really struck US at all,so what the hell do the Syrians have to do with France, here,London or wherever terror has raised its head? Why do we help attack them when they have done zip to US?
You must be a zionist, they hate Trump, despite divide and conquer rumors to the contrary. The NYTs and WApo must have had 6 eds each on his Hitler like candidacy today after his reaffirmation of America first, which they hate and fear.
@Mr Jefferson:
Syrians are actually very nice and decent people, probably a lot more decent than I have found right here. Why then don’t you find out why Hillary and her boss connived with the Saudis and started sabotaging their government? Surely, you don’t blame Trump for that? In fact, if you read Hillary’s declassified emails you would discover that sabotaging Assad was a conspiracy to contain Iran, never mind the consequences.
Donald Trump has time and again voiced his opposition to all the mess that your friends have created, that you now denounce, and by some strange twist in reasoning you now blame the very persons who are opposed to it. And then you suggest me to visit the shrink. You do exhibit consistency of thought.
IMHO two things must happen for peace to return:
1) We must stop messing with all the Islamic folks out there in the Middle East. Let them chop heads, roast alive, rape, cane and drown their own blokes if they feel like. None of our business. If the UN wants to do something it should wake up.
2) We must send back all (I mean ALL) Islamic refugees camped out here and hope they will re-build their own country instead of suicide-bombing themselves and causing collateral damages here. Maybe you can also go there and help? Surely you will, Mr Jefferson, no?
Unfortunately for you, this can only happen in a Trump presidency. So first vote Trump and then buy your ticket to Raqqa.
H
Xenophobia & demagoguery like Hillary & Drumpf is NOT the answer. The bigot you uphold and support has shown he has absolutely no rational solutions to ANY problem. His proposal to stop Syrians from emigrating to the U.S. “until congress can figure it out”? Huh? Is this the answer? Throw the ball into someone else’s court? For Drumpf that should be the answer to every policy issue -let somebody else who is more intelligent than he and who can comprehend the complexities of the issues-figure it out! He is apparently incapable of such intelligence. Just read what the ghost writer of “his” book “The art of the deal” has to say about him.
General H, have you bothered to watch what the ghost writer said about Drumpf? He in so many words says Drumpf is a buffoon! And this guy knows Drumpf a lot better than you.
Drumpf promises a lot of vague gray matter (“law & order” for starters) as soon as he takes office -with absolutely no specifics.
You and your like are suckers for demagoguery.
Why don’t you sign up for Trump University? Why don’t you buy Trump steaks. Why don’t you buy Trump Vodka? People like you prove there’s a sucker born every minute.
Additionally, in case you misread me or my previous posts, I do not endorse Hillary Clinton, and I obviously loathe Drumpf.
I strongly favor Gary Johnson for president. Reasonable and shreds of honesty.
Thanks for your excellent response, and it appears that with your kind cooperation we can have a healthy exchange of views that I have often found missing here, unfortunately.
What you want is a person who can run the country and take it in a direction that you want it to go. Trump promises much of what you desire.
He wants disengagement from the wars in the Middle East, and that would help the Syrians. Bringing a few Syrians helps nobody – returning peace to them does. Think about it before dismissing Trump’s call to ban entry of Muslims.
He wants to keep jobs here. Isn’t that a wonderful thought? The first people who lose jobs that go away to China are the blacks and the latinos. Bringing jobs back will benefit them the most.
I have been watching his interaction with some of the less privileged people whom he has been in contact with, and you cannot buy that kind of loyalty unless you really touch their soul. Don’t let his buffoonery mislead you into thinking he is a viciously evil person or maybe too incompetent to lead. His track record proves otherwise.
I am not saying Trump is the best person in the world. As an administrator and leader I would perhaps rate Putin at a higher scale. As a person of integrity perhaps the Dalai Lama dwarfs all. But Trump is astute and he has an eye for talent. He is perhaps our best bet at this hour.
The quote from Hegel is ill-chosen, because Hegel said something quite different altogether. The quote is generally incorrectly translated into English and is here taken entirely out of its context. In the passage from which the quote is taken, Hegel actually argues against the relevance of drawing any lessons from history at all. One might disagree with Hegel, as I do, but it was an uninformed choice to put this quote at the end of this piece.
Trump is a psychopath: http://www.vanityfair.com/news/2016/07/donald-trump-keith-olbermann-sanity-test
We either elect the Mad King or we elect the Mad Queen. Either way we are going to burn. I’d rather we burn everything else first.
#MakeAmericaGreatAgain
We have a joke amongst our circle that we want Trump to win solely because he will be so awful and divisive it will force Americans to deal with their phoney attitudes towards each other – the fake-together Yoo-Ess-Ay! mindset – and their superior/racist hatefulness towards the Rest of the World.
Trump is a self-serving liar and so what his policies will be if he becomes President is impossible to know. Once he is in that office he will do whatever suits him.
What to me is for sure though is that America has lost its place as the Dream Nation of the world that others aspire to and envy. It just looks a hateful and perverse mess, full of delusional and dangerous elitists lording it over a broken mass of people totally disconnected from power and security and decency. But it is the achievement of this very situation that the elite take as their indicator of success.
This utter disrespect for the sanctity of human life and the need to intrinsically respect humanity makes the USA the most dangerous nation on Earth. For if you cannot care about your own, what hope do the others of the world have? We know we have none and we expect none and so we face America knowing we need not consider it a decent and honest nation which we can trust and go into the future with. And sadly this is the trusth of the people of America – for too long now I have heard people say “I hate America, but I do not hate Americans”; well, for me now, it is Americans that make America what it is, and it is time for Americans to face this before there is terrible war. Hillary Clinton and donald Trump are both hateful and dangerous people driven by megalomania and both of them – and their legions of hateful supporters – are going to cause death and suffering around the world.
Not one single ruler on this planet can stand up today and say they are doing great and admirable things that history will remember and praise them for: Obama is a liar and a murderer. Clinton and Trump will be worse.
Time for America to get busy and start making better options for itself, as neither have one ounce of merit at all.
It is critical to not be hoodwinked into hero worship and your warnings here are well taken, however, the comparison presented here is misaligned. Past tyrants’ characters were vastly different to Donald Trump’s in that they were mostly from dysfunctional backgrounds and came from envious origins lusting for personal powers. So far nothing remotely similar has been revealed about Trump, to the contrary, his family and traditional work ethic of America is his focus and his belovedness by his five children show the exact opposite of a dictator.
Power does corrupt and no one is above it, only constant vigilance of the nature of your journalism will prevent any US leader from falling into some degree of it. Eyes open here & listening, thanks for your angle illuminating this danger.
Appropriate user name.
Agree with you. Trump appears refreshingly honest, even for people who don’t agree with him.
Ignore snipes by pretentious experts here. Sorry about that, but some nasty folks here think no end of themselves, and have collected a small fan following too.
“Trump appears refreshingly honest, even for people who don’t agree with him”. Of course he does. He is a classic narcissistic sociopath (and I have taught and done research on personality disorders, BTW). He absolutely believes his own bullshit (h/t to Mona!) which is what makes him so convincing, and becomes rabidly enraged at anyone who shows him to be wrong (narcissistic injury). Because he is so sure of himself (even though the facts show him to be a a fuck-up and fuck-over artist in most of his life’s endeavors) he is extremely attractive to fearful authoritarians. BTW, your comment earlier about “common sense” shows both anti-intellectualism and a complete lack of understanding of both the physical and psychological worlds. In both, actual causation of events in rarely if ever what “common sense” says it “should” be. Otherwise why would we need smart people?
“I have taught and done research on personality disorders, BTW”
Do you think with your glorious achievements you can get a janitor’s job in Dr Ben Carson’s hospital? And Ben Carson was one of the first candidates to endorse Donald Trump.
How do you know Trump’s background was not dysfunctional? Even if it wasn’t, his behavior should give any thinking person pause. Does Trump, the trust fund kid, really have a work ethic? Or does he just like to talk about work when the camera is on? How do you know he is ‘beloved by’ his five children?
Republicans and Donald Trump hardly have an exclusive monopoly on the politics of fear. Republicans might want you to fear terrorists and immigrants, but Democrats want you to fear firearms and global warming. It’s all the same message: “Give up your liberties, let government have more power & control and everything will be OK.”
Given that Bush and Obama have essentially voided the 4th, 5th and 6th Amendments, I’m not sure what further damage Trump can do.
One could argue that Clinton would be even worse on the authoritarian spectrum. From Barack Obama on down, the Democrats have warmly embraced all the “War on Terror” measures from the Bush administration. Ever read Glenn Greenwald? Obama is drone-killing people in 7 different Muslim countries and has assassinated at least two American citizens without charge or trial(Bush only threw Americans in prison without charge or trial). Clinton and the Democrats have a burning desire to destroy the 2nd Amendment. They also want big government to take over the entire healthcare system of the country, and are looking to undermine the 1st amendment, either through their bogus, “Overturn Citizens United” message or via laws banning “hate speech”.
Rs and Ds are just selling different brands of fear and different flavors of authoritarianism.
Johnson 2016!
Totally agree. Different brands if the same message. Clinton and Trump are fraternal twins.
Good one, Sonia.
We SHOULD fear global warming. We should be very, very afraid. Unlike most of Trump’s bogeymen, it is very real, and will effect the entire planet. Trump is unworried, as are his supporters, because they don’t believe in science.
You think radical Islamic terrorists are non-existent bogeymen? Go ask the folks in Belgium and France if they are real or not. Ask the people of Orlando if they believe in these bogeymen or not. Lone wolf right, lone wolf that clearly defined what and for whom he performed those most hanus acts.
The difference between them is that Clinton is a Career Politician and Trump is not.
To that effect, Clinton has a clear record where Trump has none.
Agree with you Frank. Repubs or Demos = coke or Pepsi.
Gary Johnson for president.
Ask any psychologist. It is very well established since time immemorial that people are a lot more pliant when scared and when made to feel guilty.
This is exactly how all existing religions propagate themselves. Those religions or practices that are more tolerant and appeal to higher sensibilities, like that practiced by our dear Sufi here, are limited to few people and often vanish altogether.
It would be stupid if people who ask for votes do not exploit this known weakness of people and entire societies.
You are right in pointing this out.
There should be a fear factor of sorts as reality demands it. The world is indeed a dangerous place and unvetted immigration makes no sense, along with releasing thousands of illegal felons back into our streets rather than deporting them. We should be reasonably upset over the incremental encroachment of Big Government into the crevices of our lives, narrowing freedoms and choices. The bluster of Trump may reveal his political amateurism, but he speaks plainly about things that truly matter to tens of millions of Americans, the very people the frigid Hillary cannot remotely understand. Those of you analytic dreamers who see a capitalist pushing nationalism as somehow a closet facsimile of a socialist engaged in globalism must be stretching perceptions to the max. What is definitely in decline might be disconcerting to readers here: elitism. The rise of the common man is in full evidence within both parties. Populism is in. Centralized statists are fading along with their haughty leadership styles and programatic approach to every conceivable social or economic ill. Trump represents a movement, not a party.
This intercept article cites Plato. The problem with Plato is that he was reacting to what he considered to be an excess of democracy in Athens that led to their defeat by Sparta in the Peloponnesian War, which he blames on the development of the naval power and the emergence the power of the urban poor who provided most of the rowers for the triremes. Plato was essentially an aristocrat who wanted to return to a nation of gentleman farmers, a bit like Jefferson’s ideal.
Some not especially literate or calm-thinking Trump defenders in comments here appear to suffer from the delusion that Jon Schwarz (!!!) is a Hillary Clitnon supporter. This writers at this site preponderantly detest everything Clintonism and it’s neoliberal cousin stand for.
The candidate most reflective of the worldview and political positions of the writers here is Bernie Sanders. Because he didn’t quite make it — but a 74-year-old democratic socialist did win 22 primaries against the vile Clinton — many of his supporters are voting for Jill Stein, including me.
But we do know a fascist strongman-type when we see and hear him — and that man is Donald Trump. Corporate control of governments has led to economic immiseration, and that situation is to fascism what a warm, moist environment is to mold.
The environment is very warm and moist indeed. The mold of Trumpism is growing rapidly.
When Mona uses bold or italics, it means she is really serious and you should pay attention.
As the kidz say on the Interwebs, “I know, right?”
Recently, I’ve started to get the impression that we’ve had one of the Donald’s semiliterate online defense teams assigned to us — Trumbarists, if you will.
Yeah, it is. Not really surprising: the US has been rapidly ripening for a real burst of right-wing populism, and here we have it.
And the Mussolini similarities are more hysterically (in both/all meanings and contexts) obvious every day. Our Duce is either going to feel as if he has died and gone to Heaven or be compelled to adopt a new identity. ;^)
The odds are still against a Trump victory, but they certainly aren’t long odds. Here’s a great way to entertain and scare yourself silly at the same time:
270 to Win
And always remember that Killary-$hillary isn’t a bit less dangerous, she’s just not as obviously batshit crazy — and not nearly as good at firing up the torch-bearing masses.
Clintonism/neoliberalism is largely responsible for the rise of Trump and white populism. NAFTA, TPP, eviscertaing the safety net, support for anti-union corporations — Hillary sat on the board of Walmart, and was a director from 1986-1992.
Economically suffering whites are mostly not going to give a shit about blacks, Hispanics or other minorities; history shows it’s incredibly easy to exploit their misery to foment hatred against religious and ethnic minorities.
“If you can convince the lowest white man he’s better than the best colored man, he won’t notice you’re picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he’ll empty his pockets for you.”
~Lyndon B. Johnson
“The environment is very warm and moist indeed”
Of course, you simply need to get by the following roadblocks
A) The entire military establishment and their sworn commitment to uphold the constitution
B) the 300 million guns owned by US citizens
C) The US Congress & Judicial Systems and the impeachment process
What “roadblocks?” If you mean Trump succeeding at this or that grandiose plan, some would indeed be thwarted by U.S. institutions. For now. (And if you think the U.S. military would refuse to obey orders for war crimes or other vile policies, there’s scant evidence for that, and much to the contrary.)
Whether Trump wins or loses, the fact remains that someone like him is the nominee for one of our two major parties. This is not insignificant or meaningless about the state of the American population or the direction our politics have taken.
Although your original post used the term “Fascist strongman”, I presumed you were calling him a dictator as I also saw this remark of yours.
“Donald Trump is the very model of the fascist strongman. This has been played out in history many, many times”
Apologies if I misinterpreted.
At this point, the “best” he could be is a dictator-wannabe. He’s following the script of fascist strongmen in his campaign and especially in that speech.
If I thought he could actually implement such desires I’d have to consider voting for Hillary. I don’t think he could, so I won’t.
But it is independently horrifying that someone like him appeals to such a large chunk of America — that segment of the electorate isn’t going away. This should worry all reasonable people.
Then why not a single article about third party options? Did I miss something?
Some of us here have begged for a mention of (or better yet a full article on) Jill Stein. And why not Gary Johnson, as well? Why so steadfastly keeping these options in the shadows?
This is a country that offers 50 choices of margarine, and two nearly identical choices for president? That’s not democracy!
A vote for the lesser of two evils is still a vote for evil. A vote for a third party is a vote for democracy. You don’t vote for a third party to win this election. You vote for a third party to win back our democracy.
“You don’t vote for a third party to win this election. You vote for a third party to win back our democracy.” Exactly! If the elites knows that voters are ready to jump this duopoly ship, then hopefully they would be more likely to address the concerns of citizens (although they seem more inclined on securing unchecked power). One of the ways they will know citizens are making the jump is from vote counts for 3rd party candidates.
Yet ironically we’ve been through this before. I’ve heard many people complain that Kerry lost the election to George Bush 2 because Ralph Nader siphoned off votes that would have secured Kerry’s victory. The Democratic Party responded by allowing Hillary to lock the Democratic nomination 8 years ago thus preventing other (more reasonable) democratic candidates from being groomed from the presidency. Now Hillary is dangling the keys to the white house in front of Zionists and Neocons, ominously signaling that she is planning on incorporating the worst elements of the Bush 2 administration into the executive branch. Third party politic are vital at this junction America’s history. As you wisely stated the intercept does have a platform to help create a more reasonable and representative political alternative to the Dem vs/= Rep America.
Americans kill more Americans than any terrorist could ever dream about. With around 155,000 of our fellow citizens murdered in the last 10 years by other Americans, the number killed by terrorists pales in comparison. The foreigners are going to have to get on the ball if they hope to beat the U.S. at its own game.
I make it a habit to not listen to convention stump speeches. They all go about saying what their base wants to hear and if elected go and do what-ever-the-hell they’re going to do anyway. Usually starting or continuing a war or increasing defense spending and leaving a whole lot of normal Americans with less of the things that make living worth while. I’m just wondering how long the decline will last before the eventual collapse happens. It could be avoided, we have the means, but it won’t be because no one wants to do whats needed to rein in defense, stop causing trouble abroad, and concentrate on real domestic solutions. Oh well, it has definitely been more entertaining and there was a slim chance for someone that understands, maybe, what’s needed to actually help but fade like they all do anyway . So we’re left with a sigh and look ahead to next week’s same ol’ nonsense again and continue the long, or short, slide down the memory holes of failed empires.
Yes it is painful to listen to a lot of hypocritical and just plain wrong rhetoric. But by not listening, you deny yourself the sheer comedic value, the critical ammo, and the evidence to deny supporters of such a dangerous bigot any ground in a serious discussion.
Our convention occurs at a moment of crisis for our nation,” Trump said. “The attacks on our police, and the terrorism in our cities, threaten our very way of life. Any politician who does not grasp this danger is not fit to lead our country.”
Let’s retool that remark to put some truth and reality into it. (Revisions in CAPITAL LETTERS)
The attacks BY our police, CONSTITUTING terrorism in our cities, AGAINST MINORITIES, (PRIMARILY BLACK PEOPLE) threaten our very way of life. Any politician who does not grasp this danger is not fit to lead our country.
TOO MUCH “LAW AND ORDER” IS THE REAL PROBLEM.
Calling Trump fans Nazis has thrust him to the top, so he you are implying that are Nazis for rebelling against being called Nazis. that foolishness level indicates a cult mentality.
That comment was less than clear. Donald Trump has many times tweeted neo-Nazis and white supremacists — this is just one documented example. His supporters abuse Jewish people online, advising them to e.g., “get back in the oven.”
Donald Trump is the very model of the fascist strongman. This has been played out in history many, many times.
The speech just confirmed what many have said: Trump would be a disaster for U.S. domestic social relations, but Hillary Clinton would be a disaster for the entire world – and neither has an economic policy agenda that is based on realistic proposals. I wasn’t “terrified,” though.
Trump’s comments on Hillary Clinton’s foreign policy debacle were fairly accurate. If you look at Hillary’s decisions in Haiti, Honduras, Libya, Syria, eastern Europe, Afghanistan and east Asia, it’s a return to the Cold War policies of the Reagan years and a continuation of GW Bush neocon agendas. All told, Trump’s comments on the results of that policy were about 50% correct:
Trump did seem to try to walk back some of his criticism of NATO, praising it for “fighting terrorism” even though all of NATO’s recent budget outlays have been in eastern Europe, a program of restarting the Cold War to promote continued bloated military-industrial spending and prevent the dissolution of NATO, a Cold War dinosaur with little relevance in the modern world. Along with the Peter Thiel’s BS pro-defense contracting speech, this is something of a signal that the military-industrial budget is safe; this of course means Trump’s domestic policy agenda is just as unbelievable as Clinton’s.
The most positive aspect of his speech was his attack on NAFTA:
However, he then attacked immigrants who cross the border looking for jobs (a consequence of NAFTA, which allowed U.S. agribusiness to dump their products on Mexico at sub-market prices, driving Mexican farmers into poverty). Regardless, I don’t see this as any different from Obama-Clinton policies, which also promote deportation of immigrants, just more covertly, with the same agenda of keeping the immigrant population as a source of cheap powerless labor for U.S. agribusiness, construction, and other corporate interests.
Thus, I don’t see Trump as any more “terrifying” than Clinton. That line just doesn’t work, and makes the writer look like a partisan pro-Clinton campaigner.
I’m still going to vote for Jill Stein of the Green Party, since she has a rational economic platform that would work, including major cuts to the foreign military budget and promotion of a Green New Deal; she’s already got a decent popular pecentage and that could grow; and I honestly don’t see much difference between Trump and Clinton, in fact Clinton appears more likely to lead us into disastrous foreign wars than Trump does.
I am trying to figure out what was so damn terrifying about Trump saying, “And no more regime changes!”
If Trump is elected President and selects a Secretary of State whose mission it will be to promote peace and to make good business deals for the American workers and the United States becomes more isolationist and stops with the New World Order/U.S. Full Spectrum Military Dominance meme, I think all of THIS is what scares the bejesus out of the corporate Congress and corporate America, especially Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, Academi, Triple Canopy etc.
I didn’t watch the Trump speech last nite and didn’t do so for one reason only. I knew there would be nothing in it to hear. It’s a convention speech which usually has nothing substantive in it. I’ve been watching them for 30 years and they pretty much all do the same thing. They make either A) Empty promises or B) glaring hyperbole and C) little details, if any.
Anyone who thought something useful that would come out of a Republican speech is simply naive, IMO.
In contrast, next week we will see Hillary Clinton give her big speech. And I assure you, it will contain the following: A) Empty promises, B) Wishful Thinking and C) Deceptive promises
That the Democratic propaganda machine. Telling voters what the voter would really like to see happen, only fully intending on NOT making it happen while claiming they tried, but some Republicans prevented them from doing it.
Case in point: Guantanamo. Obama claimed to try and shut it down but a Republican Congress wouldn’t let him. But we fully know this was a simple bait-n-switch tactic to move indefinite detention to US soil and Congress rejected it.
Democrats will tell liberal audiences next week exactly what they want to hear, JUST THE SAME AS what Trump told idiot Republicans what they wanted to hear last night. (From what I can tell by the media coverage today)
Democrats will tell you they want a racially free society, yet they won’t do anything about police violence against Black Americans. They will tell you that they will fight Terrorism but won’t tell you that it means Endless War and the bombing of more Muslim countries. They will tell you that you will have more Good Paying Jobs when in fact, more jobs will be exported overseas.
So, if you’re expecting something different from Hillary Clinton next week, you won’t find it. You will believe you have found it, but this is just a rationale you tell yourself because you are hopeful and WANT to believe, just like Fox Muldar’s poster on his wall in the X-Files.
And if you don’t believe what I’m saying is truthful and you believe all the crap Hillary Clinton will spew next week, then you are a Partisan, plain and simple.
It’s interesting to listen to the speeches if you view it as a propaganda analysis exercise. For example, one takeaway from last night is that Trump and the RNC are signaling that the bloated Soviet-scale military-industrial complex budget is safe; Trump has essentially gone along with Obama’s agenda of keeping sales of U.S.-manufactured military equipment to NATO forces high. Obama has called for the entire yearly economic growth of European NATO members to go to weapons purchases from Lockheed, Boeing, Northrup, Raytheon, etc. When Trump says “Europe must pay its fair share” he’s just calling for the same, although with more of the cash coming out of Europe.
And if you try and sketch out what his budgets will look like from his speech, with his massive tax cuts for the rich, and his attacks on organized labor, it doesn’t add up. Even if manufacturing jobs return to the U.S., without organized labor all it will mean is minimum wage sweatshop jobs in the U.S., instead of in Mexico or China. And promoting dinosaur energy technology (coal)? when the then whole world is moving to renewables? Another message to the fossil fuel lobby.
But there weren’t any “terrifying historical alarm bells,” just your typical Republican viewpoints, and much tamer than Ted Cruz, who is more of the xenophobic hate-filled protofascist than Trump is; that’s another reason to listen to these speeches, to detect the partisan hyperbole coming from both Democratic and Republican camps. Anyone making the “fear Trump above all others” line is really just a Clinton partisan.
“it doesn’t add up”
It never does…..lol. But, I hear what you’re saying. Thanks for your comment(s). I find your commentary helpful.
I will most likely watch a rerun with my daughter who has this as a school exercise. Training her to think critically. ;)
It’s also funny to watch the NATO leadership reaction to Trump;
http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2016-07-21/trump-sparks-wave-alarm-across-europe-after-warning-us-may-not-help-nato-members
I’m all for the dissolution of NATO; the notion that Russia is going to invade Europe is beyond ludicrous. The Cold War is over, the Warsaw Pact is gone; all you have now are some military-industrial defense contractors trying to keep the gravy train flowing. It’s unaffordable in the modern world.
The worst actors in this charade are the media, who steadfastly refuse to do an honest analysis of the effect of American military-industrial budgets on issues like infrastructure, education, public heath, etc. in the context of this election.
You’d think “Can you show us your budget proposal?” would not be too hard a question to ask. . .
“Jens Stoltenberg who said that while he did not wish to interfere with the US election campaign”
Yet, he will go ahead and do so now…..lol.
“…tamer than Ted Cruz, who is more of the xenophobic hate-filled protofascist than Trump is…”
Source please? Cruz had a line in his speech about each religious adherent (including faiths other than Christianity) being free to follow their faith. Did I miss something in his speech – or his record?
Source please?
Oh, Gee, Golly Miss Molly another lost comment – – –

Off topic but to the moderators…if you are going to censor a comment, then the least you could do is respond to the offender…you DO have the email address.
Calling someone a child when they comment like a child repeating parental biases doesn’t seem offensive to me.
“Calling someone a child when they comment like a child… doesn’t seem offensive to me.”
Perhaps that is why you required moderation sir.
Nete, I’d be very surprised if you were modded. Why do you think you have been?
I think Trump gave a great speech. His speech was not about fear but about putting an end to the fear and war mongering by Obama, the Clintons and the Bushes.
The most important part of his speech was – that he would stop the US from fighting wars which were unnecessary.
Yes, Trump brought to you by Obama, Clintons and Bushes. Cheer-up Hillary will probably win unless as Trump predicts something real bad happens, e.g. scandal, terrorist attack or financial crisis. Thanks to the recent scandals, great recession and increasing body count of terrorist attacks, it will take a possible but pretty nasty turn to elect Trump. Either candidate will be no bargain. I believe both will fail US for different reasons. One is no better or worse than the other. Hope we get a new deal 2020.
Hope Hillary doesn’t win. She is corrupt. Trump might be better.
You said:
“The most important part of his speech was – that he would stop the US from fighting wars which were unnecessary.”
This statement from Donald also implicates that if he thinks it’s necessary wars will be waged. Then we have to ask ourselves which will the next target be.
The Reps. are the dominant supporting faction of state – conflicts – we are in right now. That is how they want it to be.
Just like all the others the Reps. want to win. Even if it’s Donald they have to put up with. and they will pull any card out of the deck to get it. Steve, earlier this week, played the “racism card”. That’s another corner to draw votes from. I would call that a clear indicator that the Reps. will go “the extra mile (they don’t give a sh*t…” to secure the election.
Hillary isn’t to “squeamish” about – more – war too. We as the public need to hold the elected accountable for how they act on our behalf. The way the US presents itself and goes about on the world stage day by day is – understated – questionable.
This article is the biggest piece of garbage I have ever read.
I have always been a free thinker. Neither Democrat or Republican, although always a Patriot.
I watched the GOP convention unfold and listened to the corrupt media trying desperately to find something to spin. That seems to be their job, not reporting facts, but spinning the New World Order agenda. As Jon Schwarz has demonstrated with a most bazaar take on Mr. Trumps speech last night.
I found that Mr. Trump wants America to remain a country with laws that protect all citizens.
We have been begging for enforced boarders for years. But as the Euro Zone, NWO needs open boarders and the free flow of people.
The U.K. took thirty years to wake up and say no thank you, we want to remain autonomous.
The majority of American citizens want to remain autonomous as well.
Trump is an American Patriot, who loves this country. Trump is also a business man, who has created thousands of jobs. Nothing keeps him down, he is a doer.
In Trumps world, failure has consequences. In contrast, Washington rewards failure with better funding. Generational program failure is now a kind of perverse incentive for Beltway politicians.
It’s time to quit throwing good money (our tax money) after failed programs.
The government is corrupt, the media is corrupt.
The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over again with the same results. It’s time to use good old fashioned common sense and save our country before we are further in debt.
I listened to every word of Mr. Trumps speech last night, he did not scare me one bit, he made me feel empowered, his speech gave me hope for my children and grandchildren.
I would like Mr. Schwarz to explain to us how someone who has been running a money laundering foundation. Broke federal laws by keeping a computer server in her home as Secretary of State, and instructed her lawyers to delete 30,000 emails and wipe the hard drives clean, as well as many other dishonest deeds in her criminal career, be running for President? How can that be?
Mr. Schwarz, I was raised to believe journalists write the truth, only the truth. They don’t spin or have an agenda, they write the truth. What a pile of crap your profession has become.
You claim to be both a free thinker and a patriot. By trying to do both, you end up being neither.
What you say about the Hillary is pretty accurate, but
Your promotion of the Trump is just a wee bit skewed.
Unless you are saying that the Trump is a Patriot(ic) Failure
as a human being.
How many times has the Trump declared bankruptcy and then
re-sold the rights to the name “Trump” as a way to salvage
the illusion when that isn’t the real name of the Trump ?
Isn’t it also funny that his ability to do so
(re-sell his fake name as a way out of bankruptcy)
is based upon prejudicial and preferential treatment given to
hollow corporatists through
a law which was one of Joe Biden’s corrupt achievements
from when he was a corporate owned senator?
Now I know that it isn’t patriotic to be quite so accurate, but
you might admit that when the Trump wants to be the most
powerful of the “beltway” gang, he can hardly really be the outsider
you are imagining him to be and maybe your flag-waving delusions
are what the “beltway” gang wants.
Hillary and Trump, now there’s a dream (nightmare) come true!
Nice work, if you can get it!
Please point out in Jon’s article where he supports Clinton. Einstein’s definition of insanity is NOT the definity of insanity. His running mate is the governor of Indiana, the state in which a young female is serving twenty years in prison for attempting a self-induced abortion. The Republican party is the party of voter suppression. As much as I detest Clinton, I refuse to join that party. This nation may be in crisis, but not for the reasons Trump stated. For me, the crisis relates to the long-term stagnation of middle class income, police forces out of control and those who don’t understand the purpose and value of whistleblowers.
Washington also rewards lying to Congress and being extremely reckless by setting up a private email server that was NOT allowed.
Do these things and more and you can become your party’s nominee for President! That is going to be the DNC’s reward to Hillary Clinton in a few days.
This woman couldn’t get a low level security clearance today if she applied to be a lawyer at The State Department, but as soon as she becomes the Democrat nominee in a few days she will start getting daily intelligence briefings. How can this be?! Talk about a travesty of justice!
Donald Trump just started getting intelligence briefings today. Maybe we will see an “about face” in his rhetoric in the coming days since his “news” will not be coming from FOX and CNN?
“Mr. Schwarz, I was raised to believe journalists write the truth, only the truth. They don’t spin or have an agenda, they write the truth.”
Someone told you a pack of lies, I’m afraid. The number of journalists who’ve followed that rule over the course of the twentieth century? You can count them on the fingers of two hands, at most. I.F. Stone, Edward R. Murrow – the vast majority are very constrained in what they may report on, by governments, media owners, advertiser’s agends and of course – personal biases.
This is why you have to look at multiple sources, just as with historical analysis – everyone has their own ax to grind, believe me.
As far as your line “In Trump’s world, failure has consequences” – that’s nonsense. In that world, massive failure earns you a bloated government bailout, and Trump promoted those bailouts in the past, you know:
http://www.foxnews.com/story/2008/09/26/donald-trump-on-700-billion-bailout-plan.html
Look, neither the Democratic nor the Republican establishment gives a damn about the average American citizen; they just try and milk the wealthiest 0.1% to finance their elections and enrich themselves. I don’t think either party deserves anyone’s support.
It is much like the current situation in Turkey…………………..as long as we keep saying (over and over) that our actions are defending “Democracy”, no one can credibly condemn any extreme action required to “defend democratic rights”……………until they are all gone……………when it will no longer matter!
Yes, Trump, Erdogan & Socrates: History could not possibly repeat itself?
An expert demagogue whipping disillusioned working class voters into a frenzy, stoking racial resentments, misrepresenting facts, exaggerating threats and giving the disenfranchised a bogeyman to blame. Sound familiar? This ugly stew of propaganda is straight from a fascist recipe book and its a recipe for disaster.
History has never seemed more relevant.
After a week of unspeakable tragedies both here and abroad, the weight of history hangs heavy as the Republicans nominate Donald Trump as their candidate for president.and historians are speaking out as never before. We need to listen.
Take a look at some powerfully illustrated Vanity Fair cover from 1933 a tumultuous year with far reaching consequences can serve as a somber harbinger for our own troubled times. http://wp.me/p2qifI-3CV
“You also don’t need to worry about ISIS: even after the massacre of 49 people in Orlando, it’s likely more Americans will be killed by bee stings in 2016 than by terrorism.”
The Orlando shooter had no direct connection to ISIS, so why write this?
And the propaganda continues. The socialists in the news are running scared. We’re sorry, trying to cast Trump as a dictator from the 1940s won’t work since the democrats are the power hungry socialists. We know both parties want more centralization, the difference is the stalinistas of the left want to round up every body who believes in self determination into the gulags.
So its just a choice between who goes to the gulags? When did the Democratic party stop feeding the billionaire bankers you call everybody who believes in self determination. In case you haven’t noticed the 2 parties both represent the far right.
” 2 parties both represent the far right.”
Seems silly that in a 3D world our politics would be confined to a linear continuum.
Leftists have always characterized libertarians as “far right”, but they share nothing in common with the likes of Republicans and Democrats. Both parties represent authoritarianism and big government, but I reject the idea that this is somehow a characteristic of the so-called “right”. It’s the left that is relentlessly pushing for more and bigger government, more restrictions on the individual, more money for the state and more centralized power.
That’s…rich…Rich. But you’re a good little child…repeating Mommy, Daddy, Grammy and Granpy’s prejudices.
Which part of this childish rant got moderated out, Nete?
“Trump had just one message for Americans: Be afraid.”
Jon Schwarz had just one message for Intercept readers: Be afraid of Trump.
Pot meet kettle.
We have nothing to fear but fear itself people. Whether Trump or HRC win, we will survive and continue to live our lives the best we can. Don’t let fear get you… even when your liberal buddies try it.
People die every day due to what politicians and those who control them do. People, every day, all around the planet, have their lives destroyed due to what politicians and those who control them do. Your statement is a guarantee to whom, exactly?
It’s not a guarantee, it’s an opinion.
Yes, some have had their lives destroyed by politicians but why just focus on the negative? Politicians have done some wonderful things as well.
Try smiling sometime. Every once in awhile you can take your Che t-shirt off and just have a smile.
Gawd what an idiot.
Thanks! That made me laugh! You should try it sometime.
Kitt, C3 really is a moron, and an utter troll. He makes incredibly dumb factual errors constantly — his latest was to claim that the Department of Justice lacks all jurisdiction over police officers. Pedinska, I and multiple others smacked him down over that one, and as I said, there have been many.
For a long time he pranced around claiming to be oh-so-left but just alarmed by this and that deficiency he purported to see in various Intercept writers. He’s dropped that shtick since I called out the sheer pose that it is.
He’s a troll, and I mostly ignore him. Prolly best policy with a wanker like him.
Ah lovely Mona. Always right, never wrong Mona. Her way is the only way to avoid a revolution, folks. You should listen to her.
Speaking of police officers, how is your son doing Mona? You still haven’t told us what he thinks of your comments.
Do I troll you? Absolutely. It’s hard not to smash a softball lobbed over the plate. But me saying Jon Schwartz is using the same fear mongering technique as Trump is not a troll… it’s a legitimate point.
Btw, when were you planning on starting to ignore me? You say you mostly ignore me but anybody who reads these comments can see that you have a problem ignoring me. Do you like my hair? Are you a masochist? Do you enjoy fighting? Did your father not love you?
“People die every day due to what politicians and those who control them do”
True. But who are you suggesting is controlling Trump? We know who’s controlling Clinton….;)
The writer re assures us that America has never been safer than it is today. So why the clamor to revoke the 2nd amendment?
It is hilariously accurate that the republican “convention”
ended by using the Rolling Stone’s
“You Can’t Always Get What You Want” as the final statement.
Not only because the song expresses the fraudulence of Trump
and the republicans, but because, in the line,
“She was practiced at the art of deception, I could tell
by her blood-stained hands”
the song also sums up the democrats.
Also,
the line,
“But if you try sometimes, you get what you need”
reflects the very real problem that people in the faking U$A
have not and are not inclined to really “try sometime”
to do what they really “NEED” to do.
Thus, the devolution into a capitalist Hell.
Also(!),
“Gimme Shelter” is the appropriate song
for the rest of us.
“Rape!, Murder!
It’s just a shot away.
It’s just a shot away!
If I don’t get some shelter, Lord, I’m gonna fade away!”
This song expresses what the status quo of the
republican-democrat machine
will guarantee for the future.
more things in heaven and earth than are dreamt of on your local classic rock radio station, Clark.
Yeah, the Rolling Stones vs. capitalism. I’m really seeing that.
Since you have such a hard time comprehending what is written,
I would instruct you to go back and try to
comprehend the first four words of my initial comment
upon which all the rest of the words descend.
Are you trying to be more hilarious?
didn’t you quote Sympathy for the Devil the other day too?
Yes. I guess I’m guilty of tapping into
the same ridiculous mentality as the republicans!
Or maybe I had a premonition wherein the validity of
rock music from 4 or 5 decades ago is more advanced than
anything we can hear today.
I am guilty of whatever the charge officer.
Please stop me from striking again,
especially when I am inadvertently (coincidentally??)
in line with republicans and democrats!
Now I’m thinking about “A Prayer for Owen Meany”!!!……..
Someone PLEASE stop me!!!
Ever listen to Black Sabbath War Pigs ?
“Sorcerer of death’s construction” seems to fit Shillary or Trump equally well.
Bee stings, eh? This exemplifies the worst kind of demagogy – of which you accuse Trump.
Ah, yes…2+2=4 1/2.
The article, taken in the context of the comments, seem chaotic and all over the map. Bewilderment, in a word.
Many complained about the NYT and others refusing to use the wort “torture” instead using the establishment euphemisms and dodging the truth of state ordered crimes.
Yet, many of those same journalists can’t seem to type out the word fascism.
Anyone recalling the historical record surly can’t miss the rhetoric of fascism replete in Trump’s speeches.
He spoke one truism. He is the expert at knowing the system. Between his being great at receiving corporate welfare and paying off politicians for political favors, he does know the system.
Why do we need to know Trump (or any candidate from any political party) is officially nominated or he will accept the nomination? Who has turned it down in our history? If this is the main purpose of the convention, it is a TOTAL waste of money and time that can be used to deal with our real problems such as how to cut down spending. Isn’t it ironic or demonstrating how the big government wastes our money or how big business buys influence?
If you really do not know whom will be nominated (I’m shamelessly insulting your intelligence and assuming you have been living in a cave for the last year), just watch the news on TV and save millions.
The convention must be sponsored by airlines, hotels, restaurants and big businesses / special groups wanting influences. The hidden sponsors are the prostitutes (National Prostitute Association or NPA) and the drug companies who provide Viagra and condones.
My point is we need a small, frugal and effective government. The best government is invisible but it provides all the basic services at the least cost!
This is one page from my 830+ pages of my book Complete The Art of Investing from Amazon.
“Lives ruined. Families ripped apart…”
Yes, exactly but astounding far many more “Lives ruined. Families ripped apart. … ” by banksters, psychopathic greed and power obsessed purchasers of all three branches of our state and federal governments, fear mongering war hawks, lords of usury and vampires in control of our healthcare system than the Muslim we are supposed to be worried about, which may be hiding in the backseat of our cars, or under our covers at night.
You are correct . This was not a speech of hope, but one of fear. It gave me a headache. All I heard was a list of things I should be afraid of , but no real solutions of how they would be resolved. What I also observed at the Convention was in fighting , and a mob-like crowd. Why wasn’t the Bush family or any other established Republican in attendance of this convention? Something is wrong here. Trumps speech promises to take care of all my problems , including thinking for me. This is dangerous . Trump looks like a dictator in the making.
Do you really believe this: “U.S. is probably safer today than it’s ever been.” ? Just me and my common sense talking here…
White conservative Americans make the U.S. less safe for…white conservative Americans…and everybody else.
Nete Needham makes the world safe… one comment at a time.
I’m incredibly disappointed to see the Intercept, an alternative media platform that I had so much respect and hope for from its inception, devolve into a political commentary site on the US election, showing all of the same scaremongering tactics of the very mainstream media that Glenn Greenwald was so effective at criticizing. Now we’re portraying Trump and his speech as ringing terrifying historical alarm bells, are we? I know, I know. He’s Hitler, he’s Stalin, he’s Pol Pot, he’s Mussolini! Did I miss anyone? Now, let’s look at some facts: he said that the best way to promote western values was by strengthening western civilization rather than by constant military action against nations with different values. He once said that the US should be a balanced negotiator in the I/P conflict, but his need for campaign finance from Jewish money has nafe him change that tune. He has attacked the hedge funds, big pharma (wants to loosen regulations on safe generic medication from overseas), and has regularly called out big business on its abuse of fair wages for US workers through the use of both legal and illegal immigration. He wants TPP in the toilet. The corporate media continues to vilify him, a litmus test of his popularity among the corporatocracy. If those vultures are so scared of him, he must be doing something right!
He has provided fear and no plan. Exactly how would any of those changes he promises be made true? He says “believe me”, when speaking lies.
He threatens freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of the press, supports torture, war crimes, and nuclear proliferation. He suggests using the power of the presidency to go after people who have been critical of him. He suggests the US should ignore promises it’s made to our Allies. He promises lower taxes, a bigger military, and law and order. How?
All I know is he promises solutions to the fear he has incited within you.
You didn’t address anything in the speech. You didn’t even address any of the exact quotes from the speech posted in the article. So, in conclusion, your comment is non-responsive to what was posted in this “The Intercept” article and so doesn’t back your, in my opinion, phony complaint about “The Intercept” where you’ve claimed: “I’m incredibly disappointed to see the Intercept, an alternative media platform that I had so much respect and hope for from its inception…”
It’s an as common as dirt game you’re playing. Do you have some comments you’ve posted on “The Intercept” from previous articles posted here that you could link to wherein you’ve come across as someone who at that time of the posting had “so much respect and hope for” The Intercept? Because if you can’t provide links to one or several comments of that sort, I, for one, will be concluding that, as I’ve already noted, evidence points to it being likely that you’re lying.
Amen!
Trump is a walking manure-spreader…with something for everybody. I see that you’ve picked up your share.
Some of the commentators here appear to think they are on higher moral authority and yet still act like those they despise.
“Trump is a walking manure-spreader…with something for everybody. ”
Ain’t that the truth.
I bet it’s like finding a corn kernel in dog shit … “hey, this one’s still got some chew!”
I think the author need to be more objective and stop making silly conclusions. I am pretty sure about Hillary email scandal this author didn’t say anything bad about. But just because someone has the courage and gut to kick these politicians living at people taxes, he is always analysed partially by most people who depends on lobbys. Obama/Hillary has invented ISIS and nobody talks about that to such extent as if she is a saint! Be objective and may be you will have more readers
Rather than be “pretty sure” why don’t you visit the link to Jon Swarz’s posts at The Intercept? You’ll find plenty where he is critical of Clinton.
https://theintercept.com/staff/jonschwarz/
That statement is just nonsensical in that it leaves out the responsibility of the Bush administration, but, again, doing a search of The Intercept would inform you that Clinton nor Obama are considered to be “saints” and the connection to the creation of or the opening for ISIS is far from “nobody talks about.”
This isn’t a Hillary Clinton venue. You must be in the habit of thinking critique of one party or person is equal to no praise and no criticism of another party or person.
Below is a link to a bunch of Greenwald’s posts. You’ll find some more critiques of Clinton, including about the emails, and probably about ISIS. You should try being more “objective” before spouting off. Maybe you would have more readers. By the way, do you know how many readers The Intercept has? Or was that your objectivity, although based in total ignorance, speaking?
https://theintercept.com/2016/07/13/billionaires-in-brazil-understanding-how-extreme-wealth-and-political-power-overlap-everywhere/
The link that I posted to Glenn’s articles was intended to bring up short snaps of his articles with links to each, which is how the link to Swarz’s list of articles worked. But I see now that the link isn’t doing that, unfortunately.
I’ll just post a link to one article about one of the subjects that bc complained about; the “Hillary email scandal.”
This link goes to an article that Glenn wrote about that:

100% agree with your article. I am from outside USA but we all will be affected by this guy if he ever make it to the presidency. I am surprised of what I am seeing evolving with Trump and I hope he get caught on his lies and his attempt to repeat history as a tyrannic dictator. His election will be catastrophic for the leadership of USA in the world and we all will pay a heavy price if it happens.
IS this Hillary? Your surprised because your see the thousands who agree with him and want him to be president, yet the media is trying to convince the world hes a dictator, silly! Stop listening to the media and listen to trump you will be ok.
The media is what has propelled Trump forward the more they attach, the more articles (like this one) that surface, the more people realize hmm there must, be something to the Elite not wanting Trump in office! Think about it…..they are squirming, they are in trouble because NOW people see through all of the BS.
Yes, the elite don’t want him in office so they gave him millions in free publicity. At least one MSM mogul has been caught saying that Trump is good for the MSM’s business.
WOW! I dont know what to make of all the media bias towards trump. What he is saying is TRUTH! you idiots who dont support him are so brainwashed it will take a good kick in the ass to get your senses back. IDIOTS! Do you not see what is going on around you? STUPID people have destroyed civilization. You people who support Hillary are just plain stupid. PERIOD. IF what trump says scares you then wake the F-UP because its REALITY. Stop living in your make believe world!
Trump has a four year term limit like everyone else. The second amendment is still in place and we still have a Supreme Court and a Congress. So there are many barriers to a Trump Tyranny. In addition, the corporate media hates Trump with a passion. So they can be counted on to actually do their job, one more check on Trump Tyranny .
Trump represents change. Our elites have grown rich off a corrupt system and so they fear and hate the change that Trump represents. A strong president with the American people behind him can probably still make a difference in the course of our nation.
We will have to wait and see.
The same reassurances have been offered before, in other lands. But we have already seen that the Constitution is strong only so long as those in power are willing to respect it, and can (and has been) cast aside when it is considered in the country’s best interest to do so.
Incidentally I do not regard Hillary Clinton as less of a threat, just a more subtle one.
If the citizens of the US wish to gamble their futures and those of their descendants on either Trump or Clinton by continuing to deny the existence of other possibilities, then they will deserve what they get. But it will not be my fault: I am voting for Jill Stein.
so the 2nd amendment is gonna keep us safe from tyranny, eh? that’s very tea party of you
“The U.S. is probably safer today than it’s ever been.”
As far as the homicide rate goes (4.46 per 100,000 in 2015, as I recall), this is definitely accurate, and it is the lowest rate since 1957 (4.1 per 100,000). I tell people about these statistics all the time, yet they are in disbelief, because of the sensationalism of the 24-hour news media. (Homicide rates have peaked in 1974, 1980, and 1991.)
Also, let’s keep in mind the following:
“There is nothing to fear, but fear itself”
– FDR
When we ruminate about the negativity in the world, which bombards us all the time whenever we watch the news (positive reinforcement), we are led to believe that we are in more danger than in actuality, and the paranoia that results is largely why we have an uptick in cop killings. When you rob people of their inner peace, you rob them of much of their actual freedom – this is why I stick almost exclusively to following third party, independent journalism, which place the facts themselves at the forefront, and in the proper presentation and context.
The moral of the story is primarily this: the real problem, oftentimes, is not the problem itself, but ones’ perception of it, and how they approach it. In a nutshell, this explains why many people generally have the world-view that they do. (This reminds me of The Allegory of the Cave, in many respects – the part where the casting of a large shadow [perception] is caused by a much smaller object [actuality] placed in front of a light source)
With regards to the homicide rate: it has dropped every single year, without fail, since 1998
That should be good news for gun control folks, no? The Lyin Hillary uses fear to political gain as well on gun control… Well, they’re all lyin hillaries
“There is nothing to fear, but fear itself. And stairs.”
FDR
Jon Schwarz’s commentary is succinct and right on. Why can’t people like him being running for president, governor, premier, prime minister…? Instead of people’s champions, we get wolves in raggedy sheep’s clothing that don’t even do a great job of hiding the snarling monster.
We do have those… they get .1% of the vote because the truth is like poetry and Americans hate poetry.
Apparently he’s a flaming pervert.
Wow, between you and Mackey, everything Trump says or does is racist. Is there anything he does do that isn’t racist?
I’m not even a Trump fan, but I’ve never seen this much bias in my entire life! You guys are ridiculous! When does it stop? When is enough, enough? If the man wore a white shirt and black pants, you would call him racist because his white shirt was above his black pants.
What makes it worse is we have a guy on the right that makes ridiculous comments, and complete criminal on the left. We are screwed either way. The digger I deep on Hillary the dirtier I realize she is. The emails? Tip of the iceberg. I mean for god sake there are something like 50 plus people that have mysteriously died around them under unusual circumstances. *rolling eyes* And I don’t even know how many criminal cases, lawsuits, money laundering, taking money from foreign countries to sway US policy, etc. – It never ends, but yet the Clinton’s somehow escape it every time, just like the email issue. Oh, and let’s not forget the Epstein issue. You might be able to write off one or even two of these stories, but there are hundreds, you can’t write that many off. Patterns don’t lie.
So… we are screwed either way. Trump on the right and Hillary Clinton on the left with Bill Clinton who hangs out on an island with a pedophile. What’s that saying, you are who you hang out with?
I just wanted to say that the “the digger I deep” word switch makes me chuckle every read I time it.
“So… we are screwed either way.”
There have been lots of bad presidents and we are all still alive and kicking, brother. Keep things in perspective and drive on.
This is how the right-wing populism game is played. Authoritarian, nutcase clown that Trump is, he’s good at it. He comes off as a wannabe neo-fascist moron (that is, too dumb to even grasp the details of fascism) to those of us who read history and political science, but a substantial portion of our population eats this stuff up.
That’s how it usually happens: low-information citizens who have been screwed forever, but don’t really understand how the system works or who is actually screwing them, are looking for someone to blame and someone to save them.
The odds are against Herr Drumpf getting 270 Electoral College votes, but they aren’t long odds.
So glad the RNC was so BOOORING! Kudos to the protesters for pulling the plug on the media’s circus, and making Clevelanders go, We spent how much on security and surveillance???
Here’s to not protesting at the DNC either because, why get all sweaty and risk being pepper sprayed and “batoned” when you can sit in the comfort of your home and just vote third party in November?
This is our “revolution that sounds like a whisper” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OVKLmpALMFc).
Drumpf is scary, but leave it to the Democrat establishment to nominate the only candidate who could very easily lose to him. You could run a turnip against that orange Mop’n’Glo-stained lunatic and more people would vote for the turnip. But Hillary Clinton, who’s actually done most of the things Trump threatens to do to one degree or another, is still polling neck-and-neck with him, and she’s set to alienate the Democrats’ base even further by picking a fellow right-wing extremist as her running mate. Small wonder why a majority of the electorate now identifies as Independent.
I’m so sick of feckless liberals like this author who have no balls and fewer brain cells. Read “The New Jim Crow” by Michelle Alexander or “False Choices: The Faux Feminism of Hillary Rodham Clinton” collection edited by Liza Featherstone.

Don’t Ever Call Me A Liberal. They Have No Balls.
As Godwin is my witness, I’ve never seen a screecher like this as a leading political figure — at least not in the U.S. (Yes I realize Rudy Giuliani went into Mussolini mode on Wednesday night, but he’s not the star of the show any more than Alex Jones is). And Donald was terrifyingly effective for the first 30 minutes or so, which should have been his speech.
(As for his mentions of LGBTQ community, I believe it’s like his flouting of 60 years of old-style GOP trade policy: he’s telling his party, all elements of it, that he’s in command now and he’ll say whatever he wants and damn their sensitivities).
He did start to go on and on, however, and started repeating himself. He can be powerful as a speaker, in reasonable doses, but after a while it wears. This is what we’ll be hearing for the next three months at least, and it may make America grate.
He’s an imbecile and he’s a crazy man, but it’s crazy like a fox. He’s truly dangerous.
His opponent isn’t crazy in the same way, but she’s an ice-cold megalomaniac with a hunger for power not even a little less than Trump’s. And he’s only a prospective war criminal. Hillary isn’t less dangerous than anyone.
As for Trump’s promise to protect LGBTQ people, please note that he only promised to protect them from “. . .the violence and oppression of a hateful foreign ideology. . .” Now, as a different scary Donald said, the absence of evidence is not evidence of absence, but I’m sure not going to be telling my gay friends to take comfort or let their guard down. ;^(
Donald’s “rhetoric” is setup like the most commercials.
First they tell you you have a problem and, presto, next they have the solution for you.
In another article I came across a new promise from Donald. He said that the normal folks will come first if he’s elected.
That would be something really new for the republicans.
That would turn Trickle Down (maybe you get a slice if you let us….) into Trickle Up economics.
Donald must have shocked them deeply with this one.
Just more reason to vote for someone other than the republican or the democrat -an independent.
Gary Johnson libertarian for president.
Trump and Hillary are actually the kind of people who
will be allowed more power under libertarian ideology
in the faking U$A.
MONEY and unrestrained capitalism are central to the kind
of libertarianism which is dominant in the faking U$A.
As I watch the democrats and republicans, it is clear that they
are both examples of what libertarian economics does to people.
It is all about private power over societal concerns.
Fear mongering at its ugliest and worst. And Drumpf is the magician that is going to fix the imaginary evils on his (imaginary) day of inauguration -let me guess -with a wave of a magic wand!
Just more proof this white supremacist bigot is having delusions of grandeur and has convinced his adult children of this skewed view of the country and the world.
wanna be ruled (and robbed and raped) by the TPP?

Americans have been screaming for authoritarianism since 9/11. Perhaps it is due time we get what we apparently want.
Who is far closer to being a Dictator Jon ? Hillary Clinton is !Bought and paid for by the very Big Banks and Wall street that she and Democrats try to persuade that they Hate . Her and her Husbands history of sliming out of criminal prosecution over things that would have sent any one of us to prison for a long time. She has a criminal and political empire that is 40 years in the making . Donald Trump is a total new character on the political scene . The absolute total wall of secrecy that HillBillary keep should be an huge Red flag of potential Totalitarianism just waiting for absolute power . Take off your Biased political blinders Jon , how you can look past the 8,000 pound Donkey in the room ( Clinton foundation donations ) trying to pin the tail on the Donald.
I think it more likely Americans will be murdered by police. Why didn’t he mention the over 500 American citizens murdered by police this year? There’s already something wrong with this picture. God help us!
So the terror attacks and police shootings are not real or should not be addressed? Government corruption should not be dealt with? Jobs , infrastructure, poverty should not be dealt with?
Fear? This article is creating fear of fear? Come on, your better than this. Trump 2016!
Thank you for informing us about Hegel as we didn’t know who he was, as we are not literate like you, O august sage.
Thank you for informing about about Platos Republic as we, the hoi polloi are too uneducated to ever open a book. Being the educated and august writer that you are, we thank you for pointing out Mr Trumps flaws. Therefore we will take your wise counsel and vote for Ms Clinton of the Iran nuclear deal, Saudi 25 million speech donation, and private email server contain US government classified information.
I have to say that, all things considered, Trump is the least bad GOP nominee since Bob Dole. He talks of ending cold war 2, which Clinton would almost certainly inflame. He talks about winding down the American empire: even if NATO remains, it wouldn’t be the same NATO if other countries didn’t have the follow the dictates of their US paymaster. Nixing NAFTA and similar trade deals is hardly a bad thing, and replacing it with bilateral deals. And he advocated infrastructure spending beyond his wall and the military: spending he might get passed through a Republican Congress, but Clinton probably couldn’t. Of course Trump is terrible. But Rubio and Jeb would have been at least as bad and Cruz a whole lot worse.
An equally valid question is how could a major party nominate Hillary Clinton, war hawk neoliberal, corrupt to the core, and above the law? Just think what the story would be if we getting ready for Bernie Sanders’ convention.
This is a bunch of crap. The problem is the world ignoring the very problems we are facing. This is more “wake up” than be afraid. The longer we ignore these threats the sooner chaos will reign supreme in the US and Globally.
How does an American change a light bulb? He simply holds it up and the world revolves around him.
