With the 2016 Summer Olympics officially opening today in Rio de Janeiro, the world’s eyes will be on the nation of Brazil. Ever since the actual, legitimate, democratically elected president, Dilma Rousseff, was suspended in April pending a final impeachment vote scheduled for later this month, there has been a new set of political leaders who rule the country — from the very same center and right-wing parties, and often the very same people, who were repeatedly rejected by voters as they sought to obtain the political power they now, without an election, are fortunate enough to wield.
Beyond the anti-democratic means they used to seize power, Brazil’s new leaders — most of whom were also key plotters in Rousseff’s removal — are themselves the targets of serious corruption investigations, drowning in all sorts of official allegations. Given that impeachment was justified based on the need to fight corruption, that is an ironic fact indeed (despite the high number of politicians in Dilma’s party implicated in these personal corruption scandals, including her predecessor, Lula da Silva, she herself never has been). Thanks to the legal “privilege” high-level Brazilian officials have gifted themselves — whereby they can only be tried by the nation’s Supreme Court, which is so backlogged that it will be many, many years before that is remotely possible — most of these corruption scandals are unlikely to be legally adjudicated for some time. In most cases, officials have denied their own guilt, though the accusations are based in credible evidence.
The corruption scandals plaguing Brazil’s new leaders are so widespread that it is often hard to keep track of, so The Intercept is publishing a guide to help identity them as they emerge and appear throughout the Olympics:

Coup D’etat South of the Rio Grande River separating Mexico and the U.S.A. is nothing new. If charity begins at home. then the murder of President Kennedy in Dallas set the stage for what has followed. With the Monroe Doctrine those that control this country reserved South of the boarder, as as our colonial preserve with the Philippines colony transferred to the U.S. after the Spanish American war; although many Philippine thought not and resisted becoming another American colony. The resistance of citizens in their own country not to be yoked up as cows to pull profits for those that control America, is still strong, but must be constant in the face of N.G.O.–Non Governmental Organizations –functioning as economic hit men to knee cap sovereign nation states, and clandestine service operatives seeking to destroy sovereign nation states. Brazil, Argentina, and Venezuela are currently Bull’s eyes centered for destruction as country that look to their own citizens’ welfare.
Power grab and then the decent into more filth. Btw. thank you to all the anti GG trolls your comments underline the whole point of the above article.
Please, let the world know we´ve been facing freedom of expression seizure in all the stadiums . It´s against Brazilian Constitution but it is supported and demanded by Temer´s administration. Please, help us here.
If Brazil’s new government fails, they might, given their level of corruption, have a future in the IOC.
They choose their mediums to thumb their noses. Apparently arguing for disclosure makes it more fun for them. Or maybe it is just a matter of user concentration. Politicians tweet about Brazil’s communications all the time, Observatory, and in real time.
I made way too many damned jokes about smurfs years ago. Jokey was never a fave, Baskin-Robbins. Wise cracks, maybe not so. So I really dont understand why they eschewed my Last Crusade Connery impression. Bad interpreter? In retrospect, they did me a favour, Joplin, Missouri.
What if articles like these are used to destabilise the country? Brazil is a great country and South America had been showing a lot of backbone. Destabilising the region worries me.
Meant has, not had. Thumbs.
“The corruption scandals plaguing Brazil’s new leaders are so widespread that it is often hard to keep track of, so The Intercept is publishing a guide to help identity them as they emerge and appear throughout the Olympics:”
Since we are in the olympics atmosphere, how about turning this into a competition and see what party or individual is going to win??
=============
In a country where there are more than 30 political parties, PT had the federal machine running with all its tentacles – banks, companies, and everything else – for fooking 13 years!!! And not a single mention on their scandals?! Not to mention most of these are former government allies (i.e. PT operatives)…
This really belongs to the esgotosfera (sewagesphere)
Accused again by VEJA of receiving 10 M in CASH from Odebrecht. Is unacceptable this guy to remain leading our country. Go Home Temer!
All in power are traitors, they robed the people of their health, life and livelihood, they need to be prosecuted as traitors. I can not understand see the faces of temerda e cu-nha, as calhorda. All bandits. I see no way out for Brasil in the hands those criminals.
A Bovespa teve o pregão suspenso automaticamente. Realmente foi bombástico.
Great photo-work!!!!
The double-standard in the way Intercept reports on Brazilian politics is disgusting.
For instance, Aloysio Nunes is one of the bad guys because he is “cited” as receiving dirty money to finance his Senate campaign. Dilma who is accused of soliciting and receiving bribes for her campaign – much more serious and credible than Aloysio Nunes – is described as having “no personal corruption”.
Elsewhere, the Intercept described Dilma as a former Marxist guerrilla who was arrested for fighting the dictatorship. So romantic, makes the readers trust and sympathize with her! And yet, Aloysio Nunes was himself a Marxist guerrilla – much more so than Dilma, having participated in real urban warfare tactics with the most notorious radical group in Brazil – arrested and then exiled to Cuba.
But Intercept doesn’the want you to sympathize with him therefore he is simply associated with the oligarchy, etc.
There is some real political manipulation going on at The Intercept, clearly pro-PT. My guess is that part of the reason is to promote the Intercept in Brazil by pandering to an audience that is likely to “adopt” the Intercept because it is on their side of the “Fla-Flu político”. Brazilian readers are not interested in serious reporting, they want someone that cheers for their side – and The Intercept is playing that role very well, biased, partial, superficial commentary about political news published elsewhere, with a slant that panders to the PT and PSOL base. Bonus benefit may be electing Glenn’still husband.
“biased, partial, superficial commentary about political news published elsewhere, with a slant that panders to”
Sounds like corporate news here in the US. I didn’t know Glen’s husband was running for office. I sincerely hope you are mistaken about the bias here, but I do wonder at the pandering to the Clintonostra going on here.
I have zero solutions to the global corporatacracy theives, but I would, at least like to hear the truth and here about more solutions being worked on about this.
I don’t think there is any pretense that The Intercept is being unbiased here. The photos look like a criminal lineup, for fuck’s sake.
The initial commenter is of course completely without bias himself. (ahem.)
I forgot to thank you guys for an interesting, informative and well-thought-out post. :)
Me too. I personally love South America and its fairly recent away-from-the US- trend. So sad to see corruption win again. Knowing the guilty players who unseated Dilma is important to all of us.
Agreed.
Love the “personal corruption” expression. It is a clever creations that Glenn put forward to hide that Dilma is accused of requesting bribes to finance her last election. It is pretty much proven that her campaign was financed through Petrobras corruption money, which already led to the arrest of her campaign finance manager. Besides, its proven that her administration manipulated fiscal data to help her campaign. Plus, her campaign platform was extraordinarily fraudulent.
But Glenn still wants his foreign readers to believe she is innocent and has democratically and electoral legitimacy.
One thing is campaign financing, another is kickbacks. Plus the focus of the article is about those who took power to fight corruption… Doyou think now we have an improvement ? Is the scale larger or smaller?
I don’t think you understand the corruption scheme. Most of the kickbacks were directed to campaign finance. They are not different things.
Glenn Greenwald has made it clear many times that he does not believe in impartiality. Moreover, calling his history of blatant distortion and omission in his articles and opinions is just an under statement. You must understand that you and others with critical analysis skills are not his target market. Just read the continual non sense of the comment section and you will grasp the nature of the crowd he entertains.
Hint: most of these commenters praise Greenwald while they clearly expose their baffling ignorance of Brazil basic political landscape.
As I said, this just entertainment. Enjoy the show and laugh.
“….. the nature of the crowd he entertains”. Obviously you are 1 of those being keenly entertained because you always read his articles. If his articles are for such morons, why do you read them? Perhaps because it takes one to recognise one?
Of course I am entertained! Greenwald is a genius in manipulation. His articles are not the entertaining part. He writes about the same issues over and over. The funny part is the response of his lapdogs (you). My routine: 1) Comedy Central 2) The Intercept.
For someone to keep coming back to articles written by someone he cannot stand nor trust, only to be entertained by lapdogs means you he must feel comfortable among the lapdogs, especially since it takes one to know one.
Keep up the non-value adding comments mani, you are such a great debater.
One cannot be a lapdog if he is not defending or supporting anybody. One cannot be “among” a group if he is just a spectator or a bystander. One cannot be a debater if he is not even interested in debating with you!
You so funny!!! Seriously none of you thought about stand up comedy?
I understand it is painful to be called a lapdog by another one. You say you don’t defend anyone, but only a well-trained lapdog accepts to be brainwashed like that. You’re in the pocket of the extreme right wing in the US, which is why you cannot stand Glenn’s articles, but like a well-trained lapdog (did I call you that already?) you keep coming back to see how you can spew your venom against him in defence of those who have you in their pocket.
Being called a lapdog is one thing, not wanting to admit it when the facts are painfully obvious, that’s tragic.
By the way, Paranam Kid is a name in the singular, so you also need some lessons in English to not come up with a phrase like “… **none** of you thought about stand up comedy”. But that’s another issue.
That part is the best one:
“You’re in the pocket of the extreme right wing in the US, which is why you cannot stand Glenn’s articles..”
It is so funny when the lapdogs start mumbling! I can easily sense their frustration when they are being laugh at. lol lol lol
That part is quite funny too:
“Paranam Kid is a name in the singular, so you also need some lessons in English to not come up with a phrase like “… **none** of you thought…”
I love the English teachers specially when they are attempting to correct others after they wrote:
“only to be entertained by lapdogs means you he must feel comfortable”
What the hell is “you he”?
Oh by the way “None” was referring to the lapdogS.
Yes, you are funny!
Thank you for your appreciation, even if it is only from a fellow lapdog. Funny how you feel stung about your deficiency in English. Still, when you will have taken some lessons you will be able to fully better understand the difference between the “he” and the “you” mistakes in this context. One more piece of advice: check with your master before you enrol to make sure he endorses your intellectual upgrade.
I love you! It is so easy to get under your skin!
“Fellow lapdog”? in English, does it mean you admit that you are a lapdog?
Mani: Mr. Greenwald understands Brazilian politics much better than yourself.
Until 30 years ago, Brazil was ruled by a military junta. The county is new to democracy.
There will be many bumps on the road, the corruption is very crude; they will either get more sophisticated corruption (like Hillary and Bill taking money from speeches rather than straight oil company ‘kickbacks’) or they will have true transparency and accountability.
Your motivation for your outburst is strange. If you do not like the genre why read it? More likely, you are a troll haunting this board for some other sinister purpose.
“Mani: Mr. Greenwald understands Brazilian politics much better than yourself.”
Of course he does! He is a well educated lawyer. He has been living there for awhile and he has good political connections in Brazil.
“Your motivation for your outburst is strange.”
My motivation is clear: laugh at Greenwald’s lapdogs (you). I am not sure how this can be strange. Outburst?? Against whom?
“If you do not like the genre why read it?”
I like the genre. I find it very entertaining because of his lapdogs’ (you) response. You just expose my point: if I find The Intercept entertaining that means I like the genre! The fact that you could not even make that simple connection showed how funny you guys are.
“More likely, you are a troll haunting this board for some other sinister purpose.”
As a Greenwald’s lapdog you cannot see how comical that sentence is.
Your commentary lacks substance, and the fact that you’re here proves The Intercept is doing great work.
Yes you are correct. My opinion is that The Intercept (specially the comment sections) does a great job in putting a smile on my face.
Can somebody, anybody, please shut up that Mani douche ? So annoying trying to read the comments and having to deal with his crap all the time.
Mani, get a life. You are probably a fat slob, living in the basement of your mother’s house, with no social skills and you take out your rage on the internet. but dude, there are better places for this. try reddit and leave the adults alone.
By submitting that Temer et al are corrupt is less discernably an argument that supports Rousseff than one that suggests the accusers (Temer et al) are corrupt themselves. Not complicated.
“NEW” leaders?! Not true! On contrary, the main characters have been in power for years, part of the ruling circle with Lula and Dilma. Temer, Romero Jucá, Renan Calheiros.
Readers who research the roles these people have had in the last 14 years will find this article is a distortion.
It is a shame that Glenn is shielding for Dilma and Lula by implying PMDB is
“often the very same people, who were repeatedly rejected by voters as they sought to obtain the political power.”
In fact, all of these people have been repeatedly elected by the voters, majority of them elected with support from PT, Lula and Dilma. The impression that Glenn paint is completely opposite.
There is a HUGE difference between mutual support and self enrichment. Lula and Dilma never struck me as being persons who would sell out the people for anything. The buzzards in this article do seem to me to be more of the “anything for money” type.
“Lula and Dilma never struck me as being persons who would sell out the people for anything.”
lololol
These people can’t hold a candle to lula when it comes to corruption. Lula is a dead myth.
corruption is not about money.
corruption is about undercutting the ownership of public property.
Ok then. As long he is taking money from taxpayers for personal embezzlement AND not privatizing anything he is good.
Sound reasoning.
Glenn, thank you so much for the summary. Unfortunately many of us will not be able to use it as you suggested as we will not watch the Olympics, since it has not been about the competition or the athletes for such a long time. It is a venue to serve the greed of the corporate sponsors, and our stomachs can just not take it anymore.
In the US sports is the vehicle used to distract the masses from the reality of their state of oppression and inequality.
The creation of your list of criminals works for Brazil, but it would not work for the US, because those in the US that are in complete control of writing, upholding and enforcing the amoral and pervasively corrupt laws of the land are the criminals themselves, or their bought stooges.
So, we know Temer takes the Gold metal. Who gets the silver and bronze?
You should give out metals for the coup, corruption and extortion.
I think Cunha’s gotta take the Silver metal in all of this, huh?
Typos: (1) second paragraph “whom who,” (2) under Aecio Neves, first bullet, “company” misspelled, (3) under Romero Juca, “approval” not “approve.”
About the only difference between Brazilian politics and American politics is how many layers of front men and shells you have to go through to track the corruption, and how many layers of laws have been laid down to make the corruption ‘legal’. While Glenn (and others) are fighting the good fight, the unintended consequence is that the successfully corrupt will just get better at hiding the dirt.
This is true because the US has so much more dirt (plus millions of bodies) to hide while its voters have been instructed to believe American shit doesn’t stink.
And “getting better at hiding BR dirt” is a reasonable prediction, but coup supporters here live by the “he steals but he does” credo even though he doesn’t. There is no need to conceal behaviors the relatively less deluded people of Brazil expect from their most competent garchs. Just going through the motions — demanding God torture Communists again and re-assuming Tio Sam’s favored position — will be sufficient to save the nation.
Great!
1789?
Glenn, I respect and appreciate you (not that my opinion matters nor should it be especially important) but when I saw this article “Olympic Games” jumped out at me — then I realized it wasn’t about the NSA/etc programs and was a bit disappointed. Any hints on when the next stories like that will be? Hopefully some are in the works?
I meant Olympics and Guide (as in I thought I saw Olympic Games in the title; same difference).
People with front row coup seats already know the cast, though the reference card is still handy.
But you are right, NI, not everyone is interested in international childrens’ games. Some are more concerned about a slightly more serious type of game . But if there is no money in it we certainly do understand. The Business matters most.
Do people with backstage passes acknowledge that there is more than one being attempted? Is my question. Actually more than two. It is like That 70s Show in here, but with better lighting, a salt, and battering.
Lovely cast of characters! But my guess is that this is just what Washington likes to see within the “American sphere of influence” – corrupt greedy political leaders who are easy to control with bribes and payoffs.
The alternative would be a Brazil with a robust middle class, a strong manufacturing sector, an independent democratic system of government, which would negotiate for advantageous trade relationships with other countries, instead of being a compliant debtor nation under IMF control.
Currently, Brazil remains largely as a commodity supply center – cheap beef for Burger King and McDonalds, soybeans for animal feed, iron ore for foreign steel manufacturers – and this is what keeps countries from developing, as commodity prices are not under their control. To escape this trap, they have to create manufacturing jobs, as well as raise educational standards for all Brazilians.
If that happened, Brazil would become something like China (but a democracy), and the American Empire would lose influence and control over South America, and that’s what Washington & Wall Street want to avoid at all costs.
Hence, the Tonya Harding model of economic competition is implemented – kneecap Brazil’s progressive politicians, replace them with corrupt greedy tools, and prevent Brazil from escaping the commodity trap.
But will the Brazilian people go along with this? Judging from the paramilitary troops being used to protect the Olympic torch from protesters, the answer seems to be no:
http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/rio-protest-olympics-1.3706681
BRAVO!
Please be mindful that corrupt and criminal minds are also easily insulted because the size of their egos + greed is inversely proportional to their IQ. The “barbaric” chinese shoot these creatures as a way of weeding out an undesireable evolutionary trend ;-)
I don’t think they ever got the Golden Cicada joke. :(
How unfair that in these Olympics only men participate!
We need one of these for Hillary too. Good job, muckrakers.
Such as:
Hillary Clinton:
Accepted huge speaking fees from Goldman Sachs and other Wall Street firms.
Ran pay-to-play deals with dictatorships and defense contractors while Secretary of State involving hubby Bill’s speaking fees and Clinton Foundation donations.
or
Donald Trump:
Relies on illegal immigrant labor to keep business costs low while attacking immigrants in public.
Relies on Saudi financiers to rescue sinking business investments while attacking Muslims in public.
Trump/Clinton 2016? Just Say No.
“My name might be Hillary Clinton. Or maybe it’s Hillary Diane Rodham – depends on your time frame. If i’m not under oath then i dont need the 5th amendment and besides i relinquished my rights to the constitution because the TPP Global Intiative is going to rule the planet when i am president so you can all “F” the “F”off! As my sweetheart Kissenger has explained to me, y’all will be charged with treason againt the planetary order and when found guilty, “F’n” executed!”
And don’tchya ferget! My friend Khizr violatedly said how Donalt Trump dain’t unner stan the consitution cuz be’in as heeza lawyer ‘n’all he knows that Donald aint got no unner standin’ of the sovereignty of this country ‘n aint to got no unner standin’ of lotsa other stuff neither ‘n such… yeah!?”
Oh, Gee, Golly Miss Molly – – they went for the GOLD – – and pocketed it
Compare & Contrast
Greenwald vs Bloomberg
Time will tell, but my bet is on Glenn & Co @ The Intercept_
http://www.bloomberg.com/view/articles/2016-08-04/no-olympic-truce-in-brazil
Wow. Bloomberg is straight up propaganda, I swear…
It quite literally is.
Indeed, I looked up a few other Bloomberg articles by that author (Mac Margolis) and found this propaganda gem:
http://www.bloomberg.com/view/articles/2016-05-26/michel-temer-has-his-work-cut-out-for-him
Yup, handing over control of Brazilian natural resources to foreign investors is just what the Brazilian people need, says Bloomberg. Because “free trade enhances competitive markets and benefits everyone!” Blah blah bullshit . . . Coming next: Bloomberg calls for the return of slavery to Brazil, to revitalize the Brazilian rubber industry.
Yup, along with Murdoch media (WSJ + Fox), these two men are the twin towers that hold up much of the financial industry. They exaggerate Brazil’s budget problems.
Yes, Brazil is in a bit of a slump, but it has room for more debt, yet Wall Street wants to buy Brazil up, so they try to tear it down to get good deals. Over the last 2 years, Brazil public debt-to-gdp has always been less than 70%, which is far lower than US and many EU Nations who are near or exceed 100%….and what about Japan! Nor do they spread fear about today’s super high P/E Ratios in NY that’s above 20, which is well above the standard 15!
In February 2015, McKinsey had an analysis of international total debt. It was crystal clear that Brazil was in good standing relative to the world, yet that exact same month Time Magazine put out this headline ‘5 Reasons Brazil Is Getting Close to the Brink.
The McKinsey Report is worth a read. Also, Brazil also has a cushion of reserves, yet few mention this either.
http://www.mckinsey.com/global-themes/employment-and-growth/debt-and-not-much-deleveraging
http://time.com/3716995/brazil/
‘Please Privatizing state-owned companies could help bring down the debt, and it would leave fewer state enterprises to potentially seek a bailout down the line, but unions are bound to put up a fight, said Alberto Ramos, the Goldman Sachs economist responsible for the dream-team coinage.’

Murdoch,Bloomberg,Soros; All Zionists and all globalist anti democracy creeps.
Bloomy is a loyal guy. He protects his friends and allies from being libeled and slandered from perceived bad things. And when you do bad things on his bahalf, you enter his own personal prison.
Quite the cavalcade, and what a handy tool of reference! I’m printing this out in lieu of an official Olympics program.
Hey Glenn, if you need help writing some good articles, just holler. For example, why are you liberal writers not taking about who own the ZIKA VIRUS?
I’m sure your literary resume is lengthy. The fact you commented proves The Intercept is doing good work ;)
Yes, I enjoy this site because you do not have to login to Facebook, ect to post. I enjoy debates, and what does anything have to do with a resume? Bernie Sanders didn’t have a job until 40, yet i’m 31 and own 2 businesses.
That was my only point, Mr. Greenwald does’nt need any help writing articles if you enjoy the site and the articles stir debate. Sorry, I’m not really big on debating Sanders, Trump or Hillary, can’t help you there :)
Do a lemonade stand in front of your parents’ house and car wash service in their driveway really count?
2 restaurants American/Italian.
My grand dad started it in 1974 and my dad opened a 2nd in 1988. Both very successful and still here today. I worked for Fortune 500 company 5 years before I had to get out of Corpotate America. This is where I really found out how big Corporations try to take down the little man.
I’m not like the “p*ssy generation” we have here in the US today. I wasn’t brain washed through Common Core is the difference.
Two businesses? Impressive. That really is something to brag about.
Does one of your businesses sell expertise about the property rights to a range of viruses or just zika?
Are you vertically integrated too? Do you vend illnesses and cures?
Sorry about the scattershot questions, but you guys can do anything (just ask you). Business people are so fascinating. Interesting too.
“…not taking about who own the ZIKA VIRUS?”
Usually, a basic comprehension of grammar is a prerequisite for a job in respectable journalism.
Is this person implying that the Zika virus is a patented biological weapon? I feel confused.
I think he is suggesting some sort of conspiracy theorist crap about genetically engineered viruses meant to further eugenics or some such happy-crappy, like that old rumour about HIV being American. Cold war level stuff promulgated by propaganda machines not to be taken at face value in other words. Riffs on the truth.
And as far as science is aware it is naturally occurring. Nature creates the best diseases anyway (at least as a template). Bioengineered stuff isn’t “new”, it is “improved”. Zika natural. None of which has much to do with anything and I doubt anything anyone says to you would change your mind anyway.
I’ve read an article awhile ago that the Zika virus deformities happened in areas where they sprayed a new mosquito killer.
It wouldn’t surprise me that monsanto or whomever put out a contrary story .Hasn’t the virus been around a long time? Why all of a sudden the deformities?
I mean, that isnt *impossible* given how things mutate. To grossly oversimpify, viruses are constantly recombining, sharing genetic sequences, miscoding, and so on, and I dont see why Zika would or should be any different. Chemicals can cause all sorts of genetic miscoding and deformities in organic matter, thus cancer, protein misfolding/prion-related diseases/etc. My point is, it is incredibly unlikely for Zika to have happened deliberately — for one thing, it pretty much goes against the general tenets of what properties would make something a desirable (pardon, need to vomit) bioweapon, at least insofar as I understand them from school, various reading, and whatnot.
Er I meant his mind. Sorry, Dawg.
