Pharmaceutical executives who recently made a major donation to an anti-marijuana legalization campaign claimed they were doing so out of concern for the safety of children — but their investor filings reveal that pot poses a direct threat to their plans to cash in on a synthetic cannabis product they have developed.
On August 31, Insys Therapeutics Inc. donated $500,000 to Arizonans for Responsible Drug Policy, becoming the single largest donor to the group leading the charge to defeat a ballot measure in Arizona to legalize marijuana.
The drug company, which currently markets a fast-acting version of the deadly painkiller fentanyl, assured local news reporters that they had the public interest in mind when making the hefty donation. A spokesperson told the Arizona Republic that Insys opposes the legalization measure, Prop. 205, “because it fails to protect the safety of Arizona’s citizens, and particularly its children.”
A Washington Post story on Friday noted the potential self-interest involved in Insys’s donation.
Investor filings examined by The Intercept confirm the obvious.
Insys is currently developing a product called the Dronabinol Oral Solution, a drug that uses a synthetic version of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) to alleviate chemotherapy-caused nausea and vomiting. In an early filing related to the dronabinol drug, assessing market concerns and competition, Insys filed a disclosure statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission stating plainly that legal marijuana is a direct threat to their product line:
Legalization of marijuana or non-synthetic cannabinoids in the United States could significantly limit the commercial success of any dronabinol product candidate. … If marijuana or non-synthetic cannabinoids were legalized in the United States, the market for dronabinol product sales would likely be significantly reduced and our ability to generate revenue and our business prospects would be materially adversely affected.
Insys explains in the filing that dronabinol is “one of a limited number of FDA-approved synthetic cannabinoids in the United States” and “therefore in the United States, dronabinol products do not have to compete with natural cannabis or non-synthetic cannabinoids.”
The company concedes that scientific literature has argued the benefits of marijuana over synthetic dronabinol, and that support for marijuana legalization is growing. In the company’s latest 10-K filing with the SEC, in a section outlining competitive threats, Insys warns that several states “have already enacted laws legalizing medicinal and recreational marijuana.”
Subsys, the fentanyl spray Insys makes, is used as a fast-acting pain reliever. Fentanyl is an opioid that has made headlines in recent years as the number of Americans overdosing on the drug has skyrocketed. Fenatyl is 50 times stronger than heroin and has been linked to the death of Prince earlier this year. Last month, two Insys executives pled guilty to a pay-for-play scheme to use speakers fees as a way to get doctors to prescribe Subsys.
Marijuana advocates claim that legalized pot has a variety of medical uses, including pain relief.
It’s not the first time pharmaceutical companies have helped bankroll the opposition to marijuana reform. TheCommunity Anti-Drug Coalition of America, a nonprofit that organizes anti-marijuana activism across the country, has long received corporate sponsorship from Purdue Pharma, the makers of Oxycontin, and Janssen Pharmaceuticals, another opioid manufacturer.
J.P. Holyoak, chairman of the Campaign to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol, a group supporting the legalization ballot measure, released a statement condemning the Insys donation. “Our opponents have made a conscious decision to associate with this company,” Holyoak said. “They are now funding their campaign with profits from the sale of opioids — and maybe even the improper sale of opioids.”

(God is talking to all people born OF HUMANS but according to the kosher-jewry, humans are only those who are kosher or jewry= from their cultural upbringing and religious beliefs that the non-jewish world still do not know and are not aware/informend and yet it is a fact. If you are ignorant about this do your research and do not take my word for it:)
The kosher and secret societies, along with their tyranical –novus ordus seclorum- as well as their false fronts(among others) of corrupt big-pharma, want a monopoly of all compounds found in nature and corrupt them with synthetic poison with a plethora of lethal side effects, alog with their corrupt research that is no science (just like the monsanto research that did not go more than ninety days because if they go for more than that the gigantic tuomar cancer would have been evident. Imagine what these are currently causing as you read this with the monsanto cooking corn-soy oils ingested by humans). All compound found in nature were made by the Creator of Heaven and Earth, but the corrupt puppets of the novus ordus secloru are keeping the masses ignorant concerning the SUPER-POTENT Medicinal Benefits of all green herbs and plants, yes, ALL GREENS. Have you notice the awesome mexican plant of marihuana is green.
Make a note that a polar bear is different from a forest bear and also from a Koala bear. As you can see, some are in the habit of implying the following:: Since when Koalas come/are from hawai, jacob?
Endocanabinoids ( knwon as “the human body’s own cannabinoid system”) and their receptors are found throughout the body in the brain, organs, connective tissue, glands and immune cells. In each tissue, the cannabinoid system performs different tasks, but the goal is always the same—homeostasis (maintain/regulate/modulate stable healthy internal environment regardless of fluctuations in the external environment). The endocannabinoid system is a group of endogenous cannabinoid receptors located in the mammalian brain and throughout the central (& peripheral) nervous systems.
Cannabinoid Receptors:
Cannabinoid receptors are present throughout the body. Embedded in cell membranes, they are believed to be more numerous than any other receptor system. Two cannabinoid receptors in the brain have been identified and are known as CB1 and CB2. There is speculation that there is a third cannabinoid receptor that is yet to be determined.
– CB1 is mostly found in the nervous system, connective tissue, glands and organs
– CB2 is mostly found in the immune system and associated structures.

One striking chart shows why pharma companies are fighting legal marijuana
Wait. We aren’t supposed to be able to grow our own medicine for 30.00 an ounce because some pharma co. decided to they want ot charge 800.00 per month for something created by them?
That’s an awewome idea, unless people figure out that they’re being conned. Decieved. Bamboozled.
And there are STILL people out there who think “marijuana is bad cuz it’s illegal” and “it wouldn’t be illegal, if it weren’t bad”. See how that works. Some even tell you to change the law if you don’t like it (while they chug a can of “America”), until you gather enough signatures to try and then watch the rules change (see criminal Snyder admin in Mi).
I apologize for the condescending tone, but when the truth is screaming at us all, it gets tiresome to watch prohibitionists twist in the wind trying to justify destroying the lives of Americans over an herbal remedy. It is even more intolerable to see Americans watch injustice against their own, for choosing a safer alternative, ’cause “I got mine”… Shame on all the deplorable judgemental hypocrites who drink their beer, or caffeine, or smoke their cigarettes, or eat their delicious fried foods, or jump out of a perfectly good airplane just for the high, etc. and then worry about what their neighbor smokes before bed in their own home. Shame on them all.
This is standard operating procedure for that industry of utter evil! These companies must be destroyed and their constituents punished, and everyone in government complicit in their evildoing–which includes every politician and many bureaucrats–must be removed from power and dealt with likewise!
Revolution is the only recourse!

Because that’s what acum trash do. There puppets at best. They prob think there good people. They will see what hell is like.
Big Pharma is a significant mechanism of BIG PROHIBITION.
Legalize. Tax. Regulate. Educate. Reduce harm.
Meanwhile, the DEA has announced its own interest in self-preservation by moving to place kratom, a leaf grown on a tree in southeast Asia, on Schedule I – effectively turning anyone that uses, possesses or sells it into a jail-able felon whose assets can be seized by the DEA and other law enforcement agencies?
In declaring an “imminent threat” to the public, the DEA has targeted kratom as a “drug of abuse” and now all the veterans, grandmothers and other Americans who use it as an effective natural pain remedy and to wean themselves from deadly opiates and opioids like fentanyl will be forced to begin using pharmaceuticals to achieve their ends.
Please sign the petition and spread the word. The DEA is citing junk or falsified science and did not allow for a period of public comment or expert testimony.
There is also speculation that pharmaceutical companies are engaged in trying to patent a synthetic derivative of kratom’s many alkaloids including mitragynine.

I’m a long term pain medication user thanks to a lot of health issues, I would love to have more choices for pain control. not the ones that are available now! ! Why aren’t they worried about the children getting into a using meds that are available now? It’s all bs they would rather kill us all off and watch heroin problems getting much worse than now. states that have made Marijuana legal medical have seen a drastically reduced od rate and use of big pharmaceutical meds
The use of the term “non-synthetic cannabinoids” is comically ironic. They state the term as if it’s a bad thing, yet it’s simply a different way to say “organic cannabinoids.” Such masters of BS.
Tod H. Mikuriya, M.D. wrote a very comprehensive book on cannibas called, “Marijuana: Medical Papers 1839-1972″ which is a compilation of clinical studies done by various doctors/scientists in that time period on marijuana as medicine.
Some of the papers proved to be laugh out loud funny as many of these doctors would experiment on themselves using cannabis extract, then they would write in detail what they experienced while under the influence.
The papers were very supportive of the medical benefits of the cannabis extract they prescribed to patients with migraine headaches, various types of pain, seizures, anorexia etc.
Highly (no pun) recommended!
The purpose of using marijuana over synthetic, man made pain relief products, is to AVOID the synthetic, man made garbage that the body does not like!
Leaving aside the conspiracy theories for a moment, I want to share some information from the patient’s point of view. My wife had metastatic breast cancer and at the end was in great pain. She was prescribed Fentanyl as well as morphine sulphate. Her doctor gave her a prescription for medical marijuana and for Dronabinol as an appetite stimulant. On the whole, Dronabinol was easier and more effective than marijuana. This was because she was unable to smoke and making beverages with the pot seemed to be less effective.
I am not defending the big pharma companies. Both Fentanyl and Dronabinol are extremely expensive. Fentanyl is non-formulary for Part D of Medicare and we spent about $800 per week on it. Dronabinol is not cheap either. Because Dronabinol is not psychoactive, there is no pain relief.
It is easy to see that they are threatened by substances that can be grown in your backyard.
Their positions on child safety are disingenuous. They don’t care about children – only their own profits. We do a fairly good job of keeping minors from buying alcohol and tobacco and we can to the same with pot.
Send it back every last penny. You don’t need big pharm corporations messing with the voter system. Especially when they have ulterior motives.

Dan Brennan (COO) was terminated from Insys abruptly just about a month ago. The company is under investigation in several states. Two former employees plead guilty to pay-for-play schemes.
Can any other commenters (Or Lee Fang) verify who Dan Brennan’s spouse is? It seems that there is a Janice M. Brennan that donated between $50,000-$100,000 to the Clinton Foundation. Seems unlikely, but since there has been so much activity with this company, it’s probably worth a look.
What a story! I followed your links, which lead to some interesting articles.
Here are some must-read paragraphs about Insys, from SIRF – the Southern Investigative Reporting Foundation about drug companies hiring attractive women for sales and in particular, the rise of the sales of Insys Therapeutics’ Subsys (Fentanyl spray).
Here is one about Sunrise Lee, a former exotic dancer, who is the recently departed head of Insys’ central and later Western sales region. She was described as being a “good listener.”
“When you are dealing with [doctors] who are around pain and cancer all day, an empathetic and caring sales person is helpful,” Burlakoff said. He said that Lee had been involved in an unnamed nutriceutical company prior to joining Insys and speculated that her “holisitic (sic) approach” to the medical field might also have appealed to some physicians. SIRF, having no idea what that means, asked him to elaborate; he did not.
Anthony Hoffman, a lawyer representing the practice, told SIRF, “Based on your representation of the [Tricare] data you discussed with my client, we believe it to be inaccurate and encourage you not to publish it.” He did not specify what was wrong with the data and declined to provide further comment.
In December 2013 Judson Somerville, a Laredo, Texas-based pain-management physician (the No. 8 prescriber under Medicare and the most compensated) had his prescription-writing privileges “temporarily suspended” by the Texas Board of Medical Examiners for a host of findings, including having three patients die with six months of 2012; it was not the first time he had regulatory trouble.
Oh and for the children? The sentence ranks high of sheer hypocrisy and insincerity. I couldn’t swallow my water.
All the more reason to legalize opium now. Substance control is the reason opioids are distributed in concentrated form.
Opium pods and coca leaves are both less dangerous than the concentrates. That would just make too much sense though.
Repeat after me: Nation run by a criminal class…
Say it like The Pledge Of Allegiance for even a few days and whew… a whole new meaning to life in the United States and The American Dream. All them DEA agents, cops, and alphabet soup agencies pressin’ down on a populace and plant(s)…
and an EpiPen costs how much? And Oxy? Smack? And them $1,000 per pill a day or a week cancer treatments? OMG…
The thing about EpiPens though is that it is to medical equipment as Hot Pockets are to food. Epinephrine, the drug involved, is like 7 bucks a dose, once upon a time people just kept a loaded syringe in an eye glass case, but now people act as though the EpiPen is all there is. You can get a $30 auto syringe injector like some diabetics use and put a dose of epinephrine in it instead of insulin.
If Hot Pockets sextupled in price it doesnt mean people loose access to food it means they loose access to pre-prepared ease.
Complaining about EpiPens is pretty much claiming the right to be lazy and have others take care of you.
Except that schools are required to have 2 epi pens. This company has taken a government funded item and raised the price an exorbitant amount in the last few years. Plus you have already stated how cheaply it can be made, so why the sudden increase, except now, that it’s required in some places and people are “sold” on epi pens ease of use.
“State Related Investigations. We have received CIDs from each of the Office of the Attorney General of the State of Arizona, Illinois and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and ODOJ and we have also received a subpoena from the Office of the Attorney General of the State of Florida and the Chief Consumer Protection and Antitrust Division of the State of New Hampshire. In addition, we understand that numerous physicians practicing in New Jersey have received subpoenas from the Department of Justice of the State of New Jersey in connection with these physicians’ interactions with our company. These CIDs and subpoenas request documents regarding Subsys, including our sales and marketing practices related to Subsys in the applicable state, as well as our patient services hub. We are cooperating with each of these investigations and have produced documents in response to these CIDs and related requests for information from each office.”
This is from their lates 10-Q filed on August 5, 2016. Looks like they have continuing problems with Subsys.
https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1516479/000143774916036592/insy20160630_10q.htm
Also, they sacked their COO Dan Brennan on August 11, 2016.
An 8-K filing on March 22, 2016 from Insys shows that they requested an extension for their drug. See below
“On March 22, 2016, Insys Therapeutics, Inc. announced the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has extended, for three months, the Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA) date for SyndrosTM (dronabinol oral solution) until July 1, 2016. Insys voluntarily submitted information, which did not involve any clinical data, related to the scheduling of Syndros under the Controlled Substances Act. The FDA determined that this information constituted a major amendment to this New Drug Application and exercised its option to extend the PDUFA date to provide the FDA time to complete its review. ”
A subsequent 8-K filing (July 5) was issued by Insys showing that their drug was approved by the FDA
“On July 5, 2016, Insys Therapeutics, Inc. (the “Company”) issued a press release announcing that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Insys’ dronabinol oral solution, SyndrosTM, an orally administered liquid formulation of the pharmaceutical cannabinoid dronabinol, a pharmaceutical version of tetrahydrocannabinol.”
Then in August, they gave $500,000 as mentioned by this article. So, now that they have FDA approval, we can expect them to be spending monies to fight in the legalization of MaryJane.

green technologies threaten the gigantic fossil fuel industry. robots threaten manual labor.
the web threatens ink makers, the paper industry, newspaper, magazine, and book producers, the post office, bricks & mortar shops and many many more.
the curious thing is marijuana was legal until the 1930’s.
back to the future, finally.
Manufacturers and suppliers of beverage alcohol have also long supported drug prohibition and funded prohibitionist scare-mongering about illicit drugs. They obviously don’t want the vice they peddle to have competition.
Yeah, I’ve always thought that was ironic too.
I always thought that was a silly waste of money on their part too. Big business is all about mediocrity and protectionism. Stoners drink beer and wine too. Weed liqueurs would sell like, um, liquor.
Do you think it is safe to vote the stoner ticket (Gary Johnson- Bill Weld) for President and Vice President of The United States of America?
Now I am all for free choice and personal use but please think about this real hard first if you still can. Thanks
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3918429/
I’m not clicking your link.
Be more substantive instead doing this doobie-ous (ha ha ha I crack myself up) rhetorical question routine. Ok bud? (he said bud!).
Bernie Sanders also was praised/or/made fun of as the choice of stoners. Jill Stein is praised/or/made fun of as the choice of stoners.
Hillary Clinton of course is a coward on this issue.
I am all for having inclusive presidential debates as long as they include Morris water maze and cued and contexual fear conditioning test portions in their agreed upon formats.
Points for intentional obscurity. I like to do that too.
Well, I took a look at his link and it’s garbage from a public-private research consortium called “The Neuroscience Center of Excellence” in Louisiana (the nation’s #1 prison state and Drug War leader), an outfit which has a bunch of patents on pharmaceutical products that would be in direct competition with medical cannabis – a load of BS, in other words, which I detail below.
Took a little time to dig all that up (affiliations and funding), but this is pretty normal behavior for that segment of the U.S. academic world that lives off publishing scare articles about cannabis, which would be a major competitor to a wide variety of pain medications, from over-the-counters to prescription opiates.
thanks photos.
“The Neuroscience Center of Excellence” is a name to savor.
It’s a surefire sign of “Excellence” to include it in the name of your very serious scientific research organization. Just like putting “World Famous” next to “Hot Dogs” means Quality with a Capital Q.
They are undoubtedly in stiff competition with their rival: “The International House of Neuroscience. Open 24 Hours.”
From the abstract….
“Here we show that synaptic and cognitive impairments following repeated exposure to ?9-tetrahydrocannabinol (?9-THC) are associated with the induction of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2),”
“These results suggest that the applicability of medical marijuana would be broadened by concurrent inhibition of COX-2.”
So, we should take aspirin when we toke up?
I would not recommend VIOXX
One COX 2 inhibitor is just the same as any other, at least in thsi context, no?
Although I still don’t understand what your initial point was.
do you need a nanny to tell you how to live? you wonder if it’s ‘safe’ to make one’s own choice. who do you choose to make choices for you?
all drugs were legal in the american past. did the nation implode?
in fact, usage went down slightly in portugal when all drugs were decriminalized. in holland, society hasn’t collapsed. pot cafes are a thriving business.
exactly what are you so afraid of?
I just think there must be a better process for choosing our president than what we have now. I think we should design a battery of tests they have pass and their results measured against the other candidates and the general public at large. I am not at all convinced we are getting the best and the brightest.
So if you give mice massive doses of THC they act bizarrely? Let’s also take this quote from that paper:
That’s just a regurgitation of years of DEA nonsense aimed at perpetuating the War on Drugs; it’s the kind of garbage academic researchers include to get more funding from federal agencies and pharmaceutical companies.
Those researchers you cite are based at the “Neuroscience Center of Excellence in Louisiana”, which has a close pharmaceutical industry relationship on drug development, with some of their products in direct competition with cannabis, particularly a class of drugs called “neuroprotectives”. Google [LSUHSC patents] for a list of their pharmaceutical products, and compare that to the study below.
In addition, the state of Louisiana has among the harshest drug laws in the nation:
Oh, and look at this – a black guy in a Louisiana prison on ridiculous cannabis charges, imagine that:
Thus, what you’ve cited is a group of academic researchers from the #1 Drug War Prison state (Louisiana) with ties to the pharmaceutical industry attacking cannabis because they have a vested interest in competing patented products, is what it looks like.
So, maybe you should do more research into the agendas behind such studies before linking to them, perhaps? “Think about this real hard” – and try to overcome the War on Drugs brainwashing, if you can.
For a better study:”Cannabidiol and tetrahydrocannabinol are neuroprotective antioxidants”
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC20965/
The reality is that cannabis is less dangerous than drugs like alcohol, tobacco, opiates, cocaine, and methamphetamine; of course people who are constantly under the influence of any such drug, sans medical necessity, likely have other life issues – but the bottom line is that drug and alcohol addiction is a public health issue, not a criminal issue. The DEA is a criminal-oriented organization; it should be disbanded and its $2 billion budget should be moved over to the CDC for anti-addiction public health programs.
I like the idea that Willie Nelson sparked one up at the White House. I do not like the idea that any of this years crop of candidates might do the same in the next four years if we should all live so long.
OH NO THE PRESIDENT MIGHT GET STONED
yes I now I see the urgency behind your concerns.
We’ll just have to make sure the president takes aspirin when s/he tokes up.
Yes then he might remember what Aleppo is.
I am reminded of my attitude to marketing and marketers, epitomized by the late, great Bill Hicks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GaD8y-CGhMw
There’s absolutely no moral difference between those who push candy bars into kids’ faces during Saturday morning cartoons…and a schoolyard drug pusher.
Awesome video, thanks
Dronabinol will probably provide horrible side effects just like Marinol or Sativex do, these pharmaceutical companies don’t understand the importance of the other cannabinoids and terpenes in cannabis, synergystic relationship. The pharmaceutical industry picked a battle they can never win and it would be laughable if it were’nt for their tactics and shortsighted greed. Just say no to pharma!
The recent DEA refusal to move cannabis off schedule I is in line with pharmaceutical interests – but their claims about lack of medical research on cannabis are incredibly dishonest. See this study, as just one example:
https://www.ucsf.edu/news/2011/12/11077/ucsf-study-finds-medical-marijuana-could-help-patients-reduce-pain-opiates
That’s pretty clear scientific evidence that’s there is a legitimate medical use for cannabis.
P.S. In contrast, the DEA is very willing to bend over backwards for pharmaceutical interests:
http://www.anh-usa.org/big-pharma-whistles-and-dea-comes-running/
Another good example is Trump supporter Rudy Giuliani, whose lobbying firm, Giuliani Partners, lobbied the DEA on behalf of Purdue Pharma (oxycodone supplier), in an effort to help them avoid criminal and financial penalties – and who also spoke out against medical cannabis in 2007:
Notably, when Trump and Clinton claim to be pro-medical cannabis but say that “it should be left to the states to decide”, that’s just code for refusal to change DEA policies. And if you look at the DEA leadership, it looks more like a J. Edgar Hoover-era outfit, with a primarily political/corporate profit agenda:
The whole game is a charade – for example, Loretta Lynch and DEA executive Jack Riley have made loud claims about how they’re going to go after Sinaloa drug cartel leader “El Chapo” Guzman – yet the bank that laundered billions in Sinaloa cartel profits, HSBC, got a fine and a “deferred prosecution agreement” from Loretta Lynch – and FBI Director James Comey even served on their board before he got his current job! How does that work?
This type of corruption is exactly what’s ruining our system of governance. We are in a country where any corporate interest can use their financial clout to buy lawmakers, politicians and pass whatever legislation they wish. Or in this case keep a competitive substance that is much safer and less damaging to people out of the hands of the public. Corporate influence of this type should be outlawed permanently.
It’s obvious isn’t it. Why would anyone want to allow you to grow your own medicine? Mylan charges 600$ for two epipens, is that right?..because FDA won’t approve another mfg; but, you could just dispense the meds the old fashion way… “believe me noone is more frustrated than me..”
I hope all states legalize, the sooner the better.
A bit off topic: I think we’re in for a disruptive economic reset. Grow you’r own medicine, produce your own electricity, mfg your own widgets, etc. So when will the cost of bread and milk go down?
Oh and one more thing:
You can bet that WV will be the last to legalize, if at all, and they should have been the first… thx Mylan? Legalizing would help WV economy move away from coal. So much for land of the free or is mountaineers are always free (but not that free!)
Cannabis continues to be misidentified as “marijuana” which is a contrived word created by Linguists on behalf of the Hearst Corporation. “Marijuana” is a Racist term having no Scientific meaning.
The United States Government has suppressed Research demonstrating Cannabis efficacy consistently. Interesting to note that the Government owns the Patent on all strains of Cannabis including CBD’s and THC’s enumerated.
The entire Prohibition is a Scam.
What a surprise in the United Duplicitous Corrupt States of America.
The drug of greed of pharma fantasies is beyond American. That corporations would put money into opposing public good is…. reprehensible, anti-american, and simply evil. Only when executives and participants of this madness start going to prison for lengthy terms will they begin to reverse the sickness of their own affliction.
