Just seconds after Donald Trump appeared at his new hotel in Washington on Friday, it dawned on many of the reporters in the room and others watching the live coverage on every cable news channel that they had been conned.

Trump’s campaign had led the national press corps to expect a major announcement, in which he would retract his support for the racist conspiracy theory he has promoted for years, that Barack Obama was not born in the United States, making his presidency illegitimate. That expectation led to wall-to-wall coverage even of Trump’s plane arriving in Washington on Friday.

Instead, Trump promoted the opening of his hotel and then handed over the platform to a stream of retired military officers to praise him in glowing, and incorrect, terms.

One after the other, reporters for major American news organizations complained on Twitter that Trump had gamed the media, ensuring live coverage of an event that, for at least 20 minutes of speeches by military men singing his praises, looked and sounded like a do-over convention he had staged for himself.

Reporters knew they were being had, and said so on social networks, but the event continued to stream live on the airwaves in real time, with the carping confined to the safe space of social networks. The press corps stayed in their seats, or glued to their screens, waiting for the big reveal of Trump’s new position on the long-settled question of where President Obama was born.
There was no way MSM could NOT cover his "press conference" today — no matter HOW many times he's pulled same trick on them. And he knew it
— Billmon (@billmon1) September 16, 2016
When he finally returned, in the closing seconds of the event, Trump used the free air time to lie directly to the American people. “Hillary Clinton, and her campaign of 2008, started the birther controversy,” he said, falsely. “I finished it. I finished it, you know what I mean.”

— CNN Politics (@CNNPolitics) September 16, 2016
There are two big lies here. First, Clinton and her campaign aides did not start or endorse the anti-Obama smear — it evolved from an earlier false claim, that he was secretly Muslim, first spread by an anti-Semitic Republican crank along the chain email network that gave birth to the alt right, as Chris Hayes reported in 2007. (Adherents of that claim soon demanded to see Obama’s birth certificate, and then, when it was duly produced, moved on to claiming it was fake.)*
Reporters who covered Clinton’s 2008 campaign have attested to the fact that neither the candidate nor her staff ever raised doubts about Obama’s birthplace, even as the myth that they did has become an article of faith in the right-wing blogosphere.
Second, Trump did not end the controversy, he fueled it by repeating the theory frequently, and then falsely claimed to have dispatched investigators to find evidence that the short-form birth certificate Obama released in 2008 was a forgery.
.@realDonaldTrump the birther arsonist, now says he has put out the fire of hatred he started. Way to play the press.
— Timothy Egan (@nytegan) September 16, 2016
As BuzzFeed has documented, Trump has, in fact, continued to cast doubts on Obama’s birthplace over the past five years, since the president’s long-form birth certificate was released in 2011.

Sadly, none of that was stated in the first post-event “fact-checks” provided to cable news viewers on MSNBC and CNN, the two networks that are not pro-Trump. Hosts on both of those channels immediately responded to Trump’s naked lie by saying that it was true that some of Clinton’s supporters in 2008 had suggested Obama was not a natural-born citizen. That, of course, did not make what Trump had just proclaimed to their viewers in any sense true.
A few minutes later, CNN did bring in Jake Tapper to make it clear that no one in Clinton’s campaign had raised Obama’s birth certificate in 2008.

As the Washington Post reporter Dave Weigel noted, Clinton’s former campaign manager, Mark Penn, did suggest in a strategy memo in 2007 that one line of attack against Obama might be to argue that his upbringing in Indonesia suggested that “his roots to basic American values and culture are at best limited.”

What Trump did was different — asserting that Obama was probably foreign, might be expel-able from WH. 4/4
— daveweigel (@daveweigel) September 16, 2016
The thrust of that internal memo, though, was not to cast doubt on Obama’s birthright citizenship, but to suggest that he might not be as electable as Clinton in 2008. Penn’s case was rooted in the idea that a candidate with such a “diverse, multicultural” background could not be elected to the American presidency for decades to come. “Save it for 2050,” Penn wrote.
When the networks got around to hearing from some of the reporters in the room who objected to the con in real time, the issue of how Trump had bent the news media to his will was finally raised.
“I think objectively the press corps got completely played,” Huffington Post’s Sam Stein told MSNBC, about an hour after Trump’s lie was beamed coast to coast.
Top photo: Reporters raised their hands in vain, waiting for Donald Trump to call on them just after he finished lying on Friday in Washington.
Correction: September 17, 2016
*An earlier version of this column incorrectly stated that the baseless rumor about Barack Obama being born overseas was started by the same anti-Semitic crank who first pushed the baseless rumor that he was secretly Muslim. While the false claim about Obama’s faith eventually led to the false claim that he was not born in the United States, the lies were not fabricated by the same person.
Well, that’s not entirely clear. I’m not sure how everyone has missed this one, but:
Jim Asher was the DC bureau chief for McClatchy — not exactly chopped liver in the world of journalism.
“Jim Asher was the DC bureau chief for McClatchy — not exactly chopped liver in the world of journalism.”
1) EIGHT years after contacts with Blumenthal!! They claim they looked into it, they even investigated it in Kenya and did not find anything. Apparently proper journalism does not demand this key information to be released to the public.
2) What if Clinton started the birther movement herself in a dark top secret room like many of you would like to? That would make her dishonest like all politicians and like all of us know she is . That would not make her the spokesperson for the racist crowd who relied on Donald Trump to deligitimaze Obama AFTER he got elected.
What If
There’s enough actual Clinton history to prove her dishonesty without your speculation, DumbAss!!

This whole birther kerfuffle is suspect. The Democrats must have internal polling data showing that Trump is making inroads into the “Black Community.” When Trump asks “What have you got to lose?” he is getting a response.
Democrats are trying to use the Birther issue to drive a wedge between Trump and Black voters.

http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/birthers/booklet.asp
http://politistick.com/flashback-obamas-1991-literary-agent-born-kenya/
I go to MSNBC when I want to subject myself to the likes of this. Likewise, for good reason I don’t go there often.
With many years as a graphics artist in my professional career it only took me a cursory scan of Obama’s certificate of live birth to conclude it’s a document that has been amateurishly tampered with. Such a thing naturally raises one’s curiosity. To excuse Obama from this or any other accusation by playing the race card is to immunize him against anything and everything. The thought of such a scenario is incredibly nauseatingly Un-American.
It’s impossible to prove birthers wrong on this issue because no one has proved by any diligent or scientific account exactly where Obama was born. Meanwhile, in the wake of this issue bubbles a multitude of unanswered questions about Obama’s past, and while the world incoherently waxes notions of free speech and anti-racism it let free thinking get away. That’s the bigger issue, not the battle for words but the battle for minds and how to shut them down.
Don’t let your mind get squeezed into a walnut shell. Think! Between Trump and Clinton, who creates and who destroys?
How was it tampered with? Exactly what looked like it had been changed and how could you tell?
So that everyone is on the same page, the document everyone should be concerned about is the one posted by the White House at https://www.whitehouse.gov/sites/default/files/rss_viewer/birth-certificate-long-form.pdf.
The question you ask should be more accurately asked as, “What about the certificate is actually real?” And the answer to that question is simply, “Virtually nothing.”
The most glaring defect supporting the document’s outright fraud is brought to our attention by special providence, and what a shame it is not to heed such intervention. The perpetrators of this crime unwittingly prepared the above fraudulent document as a layered PDF document, which means the many graphics layers used to create the document in a design program such as Adobe Illustrator were preserved when exported to the PDF document. Hence, the biggest problem with the above PDF is it couldn’t have been a scanned image as the White House contends because there would only be a single graphic image sited on a single layer. Instead what we see when the PDF file is viewed using Adobe Illustrator are multiple layers providing a well preserved forensic trail of how the individual components were fabricated and assembled to produce a painfully obvious photoshopping.
One explanation is those responsible for fabricating this fraudulent document had neither the knowledge nor the experience that would allow them to cover their tracks by first flattening the layers into a single layer before generating the above PDF document. Another explanation is that someone on the fraud team did us the favor of embedding the whistleblowing elements of this PDF.
Still, there have been other claims that the PDF document was multilayered because it was the product of OCR and/or because a layer-based optimization process was run on the scanned image. But these explanations upon close inspection simply don’t apply to the generation of the above PDF. See the video link below for more on these lines of thinking.
In any event, having access to the individual layers of the document in design mode using a program such as Adobe Illustrator allows for the systematic inspection of all its manipulated elements, the bulk of which were cloned from other documents and sources. The document is a fake and the thing that makes all of this so hard to believe is the document is truly a really bad fake.
The only thing the forged PDF has going for it is the conspicuous non objections from academia, industry, and the media. The entirety of this debacle amounts to a lot more than the simple specter of avoiding racism. One just can’t be told these things. One must go out into the world and learn of them through open eyes, open hearts, and open minds. One has got to learn that Hillary is part of this machine that fabricates our reality. It’s a very sad day for America, or what’s left of it, when such obvious and irrefutable fabrication is so easily accomplished and paraded under our noses, while being openly endorsed by so many.
There are a few good video exposes out there. One of the better videos is produced by Sheriff Joe Arpaio, and that in itself might dissuade some people from watching it. Nonetheless, it presents the most information in the most straightforward way and does not ask you to speculate. Strangely the number of views for all of these videos is incredible low such that it would seem the counts are being tampered with. How can people be so utterly disinterested in such a huge issue that is so easily dismantled and provable to be a lie? It’s so shamefully Un-American.
Arpaio’s investigation can be viewed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UAg2f3dP1g. This is a good one to watch because the investigative team also exposes the forgery of Obama’s selective service registration card. It also details the little known fact that the INS records kept on microfiche at the National Archives that would have logged BO’s entry into the US via birth date were purged along with an entire week of data for the first week in August, 1961, which included Obama’s birth date of August 1, 1961.
My reply was not posted so I’m trying this.
Were the two contemporaneous newspaper articles about his birth fake, as well?
Are we talking domestic or foreign policy here? Because this is the kind of think Clinton will continue:
http://news.antiwar.com/2016/09/17/us-bombs-syrian-army-base-in-deir-ezzor-killing-83-troops/
The only real question here is, was this a deliberate U.S. action on behalf of ISIS forces, or not? They must have known the target they were hitting was a Syrian government site, at an airport? Wow.
What is the difference between a lie and a racist lie? A “racist lie” is used when slandering an individual. Tell your readers, Mackey, do you have any proof of Trump being a racist? I thought not, LIAR.
http://m.washingtonexaminer.com/does-clinton-have-a-blumenthal-birther-problem/article/2602090
As for the Obama birther issue used in the article to attack Trump, while he piled on on the issue, the persons who actually started it worked for the Clinton campaign against Obama. One of the spearheads was her major adviser Sidney Blumenthal. The reality that while Trump definitely piled on, the Clintons started it up should render this issue a bit of a blunt sword for the harpy. What it reveals is how she is capable of using any issue to achieve power and their cynicism is boundless, since they are now using the issue they developed themselves. This cynicism is even more apparent when we realize that Cruz’s campaign was unaffected by the fact he was born a Canadian citizen in Calgary, Alberta, which is still nominally independent from the yankee imperium. Another fact not mentioned is that the claim of Kenyan birth emerged when those promoting a book Obama wrote in 1991 seemed to think that a claim that he had been born in Kenya might increase interest in the then unknown author.
This is a serious problem with this article/op-ed: Mackey claim this about the Trump statement:
Then he uses the following as evidence of this statement:
But if you follow that link and read the Chris Hayes piece, it is entirely about the “Obama is a secret Muslim smear” started by some Illinois politician in 2004 when Obama was a Senator – not one word about the birther line. In fact, all the evidence points to the Clinton camp being behind the “birther” smear in the 2007-2008 election season.
That’s just false reporting, lying to the Intercept readers, and it clearly needs a retraction – a “we made a factual mistake” byline at the bottom of the article. If Mackey refuses to do this, the Intercept should never accept another article he writes for publication, if they want to preserve their integrity and reputation.
“if they want to preserve their integrity and reputation.”
That’s a mighty big ‘if’.
NYT Bob laughs all the way to the banksters he blows.
We know that the lamestream press is in the bag for the harpy, it’s just that, at times, Trump is clever enough to use remaining wriggle room. The reality of the Harpy’s presidency, a challenge to Russia which could lead to nuclear armageddon, trumps any of these petty complaints from put-upon lackeys of the yankee establishment.
Yeah we are much better off with the “clever” Trump who’s strategy for the ME is bomb the shit out of them.
Seriously???!!!
The Muslim Middle East has been bombed into rubble by the Obama/Clinton and Bush administrations – all to provide a secure parking lot for Israel.
Well, bombing the shit out of the ME is Obama’s strategy. He dropped something like 24,000 bombs on majority Muslim countries in 2015. I think he may equal the number of bombs dropped by Bush. It is hard to tell what Trump might do, but if NATO is involved his attitude seems to be for them to do the heavy lifting.
” He dropped something like 24,000 bombs on majority Muslim countries in 2015. I think he may equal the number of bombs dropped by Bush. ”
“something like?” “I think equals the the number” no offence Erelis but you seem to just be guessing about the facts. As for NATO who do you think is the biggest contributor? Also not to long ago Trump said he wanted to get out of NATO. Trump is can’t even run a casino how is he going to run a country.
Yah, I was off. The number is 23, 144. I was going by memory.
http://www.alternet.org/news-amp-politics/us-dropped-23144-bombs-muslim-majority-countries-2015
The following link how Obama is looking to exceed Bush in number of bombs dropped.
https://www.popularresistance.org/obama-on-track-to-drop-more-bombs-than-bush/
Trump has made it relatively clear that he would leave Syria to Russia and back away from that US air war campaign. Clinton by every indication wants to bomb Assad and mix it up with the Russians. I also think if she wins expect her to come up with a reason to bomb Iran.
My impressions is that the implication of your post is that Hillary won’t bomb the living shit out of the Middle East. I think she will and would be worse than Trump as she has shown horrid judgement about matters of war and peace. Could Trump just continue Obama and Bush policies of mass bombings? Maybe, but also maybe not–again with Hillary the answer is an resounding yes.
As for NATO. I agree we should get out. As for paying into NATO, even Obama has complained that most NATO countries don’t contribute enough of their GNP to defense. Only about 5 countries do.
Easy. News media should treat tRump like they just did on his hotel tour, and deny him any *unpaid* access.
Mackey is one of those “reporters” getting conned by Trump. You morons never stopped reporting your tabloid drivel about an actual t.v. celebrity running for POTUS.
Mackey is part of what has become so wrong with TI.
Totally agree!! It’s an insult to the TI readership to have to read articles “showing” Trump is a liar/scammer/etc. Why is Mackey wasting time and resources? Who among the TI readership somehow thinks Trump is an option?
Why choose to cover Trump like a tabloid instead of using TI to inform the readers about something more valid?
Are you kidding? Just read the comment section.
“Are you kidding? Just read the comment section.”
Comments are usually a riot. Who actually reads beyond the headline of a NYT Bob turd sandwich?
Really. I think he’s trying to do comedy or something, only he doesn’t have a grasp on reality. He’s probably as drunk as Shillary.
Clearly there are plenty of Trump supporters among the readership. The man asked who among TI teadership wants Trump and i showed him where to find them. If you have a case to contrary state it.
“If you have a case to contrary state it.”
i was only observing that comments are worth reading always but Mackey is not.
Trump is a salesman and that’s what he does in front of everyone. He could not be worse than Hillary.
He could be far far worse. For all its faults the US is still one of the best places in the world to live. Trump is can’t even run a casino much less a country. He is a buffoon who thinks he knows more then the generals but really knows nothing. Not to mention being a liar and a bully who is so thin skinned he would send in troops to fight if he felt he personally was insulted.
Oh and I almost left out he’s a racist which is his biggest appeal to his supporters.
I’ll tell them what to do about it: stop covering Trump. Go silent on Trump’s speeches, like he doesn’t exist.
But we all know that will never happen.
All the whining about Trump is fake. Trump is a ratings machine, and reporters will take it up the #$$ over and over because their employers want as much Trump as possible.
They want Trump, not in spite of his sickening behavior, but because of it.
And Trump knows that and exploits it.
So the mainstream media can stop pretending they don’t like Trump; it is they who are his enablers.
Good for Trump!!! The master pimp pimped the corporate stenographer lackies who fancy themselves journalists. And now their feelings are hurt. This is too precious and entertaining their tantrum and foot stomping. This is the same press corp that has aided and encouraged and participated in the use of McCarthyism by the democrats as documented by this Glenn Greenwald fella. This is the press corp that has not challenged one assertion about Trump and Putin and instead as made Larry fucking King the face of Russian imperialism for a short interview with Trump. I am not voting for either Trump or Clinton, but dang I hope Trump does more things like this to bother this herd of hacks, which may be an insult to hacks.
Mackey is playing a very strange and apparently dishonest game when he says:
That is NOT the birther smear described in that Nation article he links to; that is the “Obama is a secret Muslim smear” which dates back to 2004, and which is linked to right-wing political actors in Illinois. So, where did the birther smear come from? If we go back to 2011:
http://www.politico.com/story/2011/04/birtherism-where-it-all-began-053563
Thus, it really was Clinton supporters who brought on the birther conspiracy, which was later picked up by Republicans in Obama’s reelection campaign. Let’s consider the details:
So, perhaps Clinton and her campaign were not directly linked to it; although Clinton might have approved of a third party doing this – but everything points toward Clinton supporters being behind this, not the “alt-right” (which, again, was behind the “secret Muslim” story). From FactCheck
I think Mackey has some serious explaining to do here, based on the above reports – in particular, why did he try to conflate the “birther” smear with the “secret Muslim” smear? Overeager reaching, perhaps? If so, a retraction/ editorial note/ apology seems in order. Some fine wangling between “Clinton and her campaign” vs. “Clinton supporters” is not going to cut it, either.
I mean, seriously, think about the (not so) subtle “racism” that underlies Penn’s “analysis” of what was/was not/is possible in America. It looks like a classic case of “projection” of one’s own racial fears and biases onto the rest of his fellow citizens.
For Penn, a nominal big tent Democratic Party operative, and guiding light of the Clinton campaign at that time–why even go there? Why ever suggest that any Democratic Party member is unsuited or unelectable to the highest office(s) in this land because of his/her background being “diverse or multi-cultural”?
I call bullshit on the entire premise and it has no place in the Democratic Party, except of course that people like Clinton and Penn desire personal aggrandizement and power more than they desire anything else in life.
That is not to say that America and Americans isn’t full of plenty of racists. It’s in this nation’s DNA in some ways, and in too many of its citizens.
” It’s in this nation’s DNA in some ways, and in too many of its citizens.”
That DNA came from Germany, Ireland, England, and then “25 million Europeans made the long trip. Italians, Greeks, Hungarians, Poles, and others speaking Slavic languages made up the bulk of this migration. 2.5 to 4 million Jews were among them.” according to Wiki. (Just love how Jews are there own people – Exception much …)
Clearly, the founding fathers had English roots so they are off the hook. It’s those Germans and Eye-ties (see Benito) if you ask me …
@Robert Macky Great, detailed article. Keep up the good work.
Obama’s own bio for one of his books said he was born in Kenya. A Kenyan newspaper also claimed he was born in Kenya. He received student aid reserved for foreign students etc. and so forth.
As for the media getting played, it was all foretold.

Intercept Readers Know They Are Being Conned By Robert Mackey, But Not What to Do About It
Never was any actual evidence 0Bama wasn’t born in HI. The birth certificate put out by the white house had obviously been tampered. On the original fathers name was left blank, later filled in during the digital age.
Mackey still running the “con” that he is a journalist and not Bahgdad Bob reincarnated.
Particularly tragic when you consider First Look lost Taibbi and got this. If Glenn ever walks, it’s over.
Either Mr. Mackey has be smokin some wacky tobbaci or he didn’t bother to read the very article that he chose to cite in refuting the alt-right claim that “Clinton and her campaign aides” and/or supporters were the source of the rumor that Obama was foreign born. In addressing the genesis of the “false” claim that Obama was foreign born, Mr Hayes himself chose to defer to a Set. 23, 2015 article written by David Weigel entitled “Republicans are blaming Hillary Clinton for the ‘birther’ movement. That’s wishful thinking.”
Okay, I get it. In order to actually address the question as to whether, or not, Clinton and her campaign aides” were the germinating source of the rumor that Obama was foreign born, Mr Mackey would like his readers to revisit a number of other “specious” claims that were generated by the alt right in an effort to defame their political opposition. Whenever I see a journalist laboring to cite numerous like examples of political rumor mongering that can be purportedly linked to those who commonly harbor an alt right ideological bias as pretext to advancing their own intended thesis of another-in-a-chain-of specious, politically motivated character attacks, I immediately predisposed to believing that the intended thesis itself must lack merit- else why the need to dress it up?
In actually addressing the genesis of the claim that Obama was foreign born, David Weigel himself speaks to an evolutionary chain of circumstances that DID originate from a memo that was written by Clinton pollster, Mark Penn, who “dismissed Obama with the suggestion that he was simply too alien to win a national election”:
In that same article, Mr. Weigel also astutely observed that, “in December 2007, a Clinton campaign worker named Judy Rose sent an e-mail asking whether Obama was a secret Muslim who intended to destroy America from the inside.” Yes, that is right, the Obama-is-a-Muslim meme also originated in the same Clinton camp in the run-up to the 2008 primary presidential contest between Clinton and Obama. Obama’s “alien” persona was deemed a liability that could be exploited by the Clinton camp. Although Ms. Rose was eventually “fired and denounced” for creatively echoing Penn’s perception that Obama-is-too-alien-to-win-national-election meme, the urge to emphasize his “otherness” as a deficit was persistent theme that Clinton supporters disseminated on their blogs. As the 2008 democratic primary heated up, the Obama-is-too-alien-to-win-national-election meme morphed into a Obama-is-a-foreign born-alien when a pro-Clinton attorney, Phil Berg, filed a lawsuit in Pennsylvania with the intention of preventing Obama from having his name placed on the ballot. Yet Mr. Mackey chooses to ignore the evolutionary nature of this chain of events that originated with Clinton aides and culminated in the 2008 legally adjudicated claim that Obama was foreign born. Instead he chooses to narrow the discussion with a little slight of hand by focusing on whether Clinton “staffers” alone were responsible for the genesis of “birtherism crap.”
Different day, same old wacky Mackey hackery.
You and other commentators are doing what the editors and reporters should have done. It is kind of sad really.
You are a better journalist than some of the people publishing here at TI or Wapo, Huffpo, NYT etc.
Thank you.
You are obviously a person of great discernment…
At its best, advocacy journalism is extremely prone ideological hubris. At its worst, it is prone to the type of ideological bias that allows for ends-justify-the-means methods of reporting that is amply represented in Mackey’s work. However, I do not want to single him out as an exception as the same type of advocacy journalism is standard fare on both ends of the political spectrum.
Thanks for the feedback – much appreciated.
I distinctly remember the 2008 Hillary campaign circulating that picture of Obama in a turban, and Hillary hedging on whether Obama was Christian or not (as if that should matter), plus Hillary saying she should stay in the nomination race just in case Obama met a similar fate to Robert Kennedy (assassination).
I think it’s fair to say she was happy with any insinuations about him, then.
Speaking of Obama, did you know he said he wasn’t going to put ground troops in Syria? Guess what he did today?
That’s right, Obama just put special forces in Syria.
US Special Forces join Turkish troops in Syria
Obama sure acts like he was born in the USA – he’s a liar, and an insecure, violent jerk.
Yes I saw that too. Guess they have to get that “No Fly Zone” at any cost. There will be screams of rage and revenge when one of those American soldiers is killed or captured. BOOM…no fly zone. Gotta have that regime change at all cost.
That would be reminiscent of the time when Trump distinctly remembered seeing thousands of Muslims celebrating on 9/11……I suppose.
Some say Jews celebrated, some say Muslims… Bush said Saddam Hussein celebrated, and Hillary Clinton agreed with Bush. So did Trump, by most accounts. I’m sure the military-industrial complex celebrated – as those are the insufferable bastards who’ve made a mint out of 9/11
Hmmmm, seems no one could ever come up with the video tho….But if you know of one please be my guest and post it.
I obviously wasn’t clear – I meant that both the Muslim and Jewish celebrations were urban legends, falsehoods, canards, but that the MIC was likely a real celebration.
Ah, you commenters crack me up.
“NYT Bob laughs all the way to the bank.”
“I expect better reporting than this from the Intercept. Are you guys shilling for Hillary now, too?”
“Whatever will Mackey have to write about should Trump lose the election?”
“I’ll drop in some “journalism” from Breitbart and see if the author continues to throw a written temper-tantrum:”
“I don’t follow Mr. Mackey on social media, so I’m wondering whether he has been complaining that once again, Mr. Trump forced him to write another Trump story.”
“I’m sure it’s just a rumor, but I heard that Clinton is holding Mackey’s family hostage.”
“Geez, where is the angst over the constant kid=glove & positive treatment of Clinton on every friggin MSM network, website, twiiter account, facebook, etc, etc., and the constant berating of Trump by the same establishment fools?”
“Every time I see an article like this about What The Donald said is a lie makes me laugh.”
Every single one of these drooling comments is a tacit defense of Donald Trump. And a pitifully lazy defense at that. Basically attacking the author’s character and ignoring the substance of the article. This article is spot-on true. The media, especially the cable pundits, got played like a fiddle and in the process of allowing Trump to make a spectacle out of correcting a blatant lie (the Birther “Issue”), basically burned Trump’s skin from orange to brown with camera lights while he perpetuated a new falsehood (Clinton started the birther movement). http://politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2016/sep/16/donald-trump/fact-checking-donald-trumps-claim-hillary-clinton-/
It was the ultimate win for political stagecraft and an embarrassment to so many in the media that covered it.
Mackey is not even close to the only journalist picking up on this story, but did so in a compelling way.
Washington Post (Cilizza): We got played
Vanity Fair: Trump Trolls the Media, Turns Phony birther press conference into hotel infomercial
Politico: Trump kicks off ‘birther’ press spectacle by promoting his hotel
Deadspin: Trump’s birther PR best by chaos.
Fox News: Donald Trump plays the MSM like Charlie Daniels’ fiddle.
Washington Post (again): Its time for TV news to stop playing the stooge for Donald Trump
Vox: Donald Trump fooled cable news into airing 25-minute informercial…
“The media, especially the cable pundits, got played like a fiddle and in the process of allowing Trump to make a spectacle out of correcting a blatant lie”
How is this NOT political Rubber-Necking again? You took my comment out of context. Therefore, you’re being deceptive.
Here is my comment in it’s entirety.
Every time I see an article like this about What The Donald said is a lie makes me laugh.
This is nothing more than Presidential Political Rubber-necking by the media and Trump knows this.
The fact that he said something different in the past is EXACTLY the point. He wants the media to point this out and follow him around and ask questions. This way, he gets to bash HRC instead of paying top dollar for TV advertising.
Shrewd.
Oops, sorry Galactus. That’s sloppiness on my behalf.
No worries Nate. Thanks.
“Basically attacking the author’s character ”
You cannot attack something that does not exist.
But that’s never stopped you before, has it, Nate?
A swing and a miss; it means the bat is not on the ball.
The headline is pure comedy gold.
Straight from the horse’s mouth.
NYT Bob laughs all the way to the bank.
What the hell are you talking about? Clinton’s campaign absolutely started the birther and ‘Obama’s a Muslim’ claims. That she did it through surrogates does not mean she’s not responsible for that. Her campaign did the exact same thing with Bernie’s religious views.
Even if you want to give her a pass for starting it, no one can deny that she very aggressively promoted those views, and very directly.
Obama also directly confronted her on this on an airport tarmac. For a good read and confirmation, read the Washington Posts’ article ‘The moment Obama knew he would beat Hillary Clinton for the 2008 nomination.’
I expect better reporting than this from the Intercept. Are you guys shilling for Hillary now, too?
I concur. Mackie is either poorly informed or he is being dishonest. And it’s not the first time.
I agree. It is a pattern of behaviour. I suspect he is purposely ill-informed to enable him to be dishonest.
Lovely trip down memory lane (compliments of HuffPost no less). Mackey — and others eager to characterize that portion of Trump’s announcement as “utterly false” — are so off base with their dissembling it is shameful. Trump, however, is setting them up and assuring that the Debates will be a forum for re-litigating her gutter political tendencies (and that anyone who dares question his characterization of the slander’s origination with HRC will similarly and publicly be discredited in prime time).

Whatever will Mackey have to write about should Trump lose the election?
Easy. He will write about Putin, Kim yong-un, you know those people that ti considers to be evil and for which Mackey has to beat up the war drums. Chinese with pig tails, damn Russkies, and so on an so forth.
Does not matter, as long as commenting is allowed, and one recognizes the articles of Mackey. Much like reading a comic. Satire at best. Surely not journalism.
“…for the racist conspiracy theory he has promoted for years”
__
Why, Mr. Mackey, is this RACIST? According to yourself [and the vast majority of left-winged reporters] anytime a white person is at odds with a black person that white person is a racist. Remember – if it weren’t for the leftist press, color wouldn’t exist. Besides, why don’t you go and write for Mother Jones? Those totalitarian cultural fascists over there would love to read your bullcrap.
THIS so hard.
Since journalism is now just piecing together a bunch of other people’s tweets: I’ll drop in some “journalism” from Breitbart and see if the author continues to throw a written temper-tantrum:
http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2016/09/16/hillary-clinton-campaign-manager-admits-birtherism-started/
Robert,
your hit pieces are worse than Zaids. I can’t resolve to read past the title for 90% of them. You remember how you dreamt of being a journo, back in the days? Good times, huh? The college newspaper, the WSJ, now you’re stuck writing H’s smears.
You guys keep it up, you’re doing a great job at maintaining or even enhancing the intercepts credibility.
What color was Ds poop today again?
I know Chump will never agree to it, but how great would it be to see that proposed $10M interview with Mark Cuban?
So what remains unanswered is just how many more times the main stream media is going to allow Trump to “rick roll” them.
My guess: all the times. They simply can’t help it.
Murrow must be spinning in his grave at about 50,000 RPM.
Thank god, another Trump info–tainment story . . we can never get enough of that. Keep up the good work Mackey.
I don’t follow Mr. Mackey on social media, so I’m wondering whether he has been complaining that once again, Mr. Trump forced him to write another Trump story. It’s like complaining about being hypnotized, but ignoring that it only works if the subject cooperates.
You don’t really have to follow Mackey on twitter… to read his tweets just come here where he gets to republish them as evidence that he is right.
It still amazes me that the editors here allow him to quote himself like that.
Nice joke tho, Benito. Some of your wit has been scary lately. I’m glad you have not given up on laughing sir.
I’m sure it’s just a rumor, but I heard that Clinton is holding Mackey’s family hostage.
It’s true. I’ve read their tweets. It’s kind of like the Diary of Anne Frank.
“It’s like complaining about being hypnotized, but ignoring that it only works if the subject cooperates.”
As many a bully has said, “Why are you hitting yourself?” as he beats you with your own fist.
I think NYT Bob is being bullied by Benito Mussolini. Someone, please, send a tweet or something to Betsy Reed to put a stop to the constant beratement of Bobby.
I know, I know, it is only a poor, disillusioned, megalomaniac,
on the receiving end but it is a mammal still …
Geez, where is the angst over the constant kid=glove & positive treatment of Clinton on every friggin MSM network, website, twiiter account, facebook, etc, etc., and the constant berating of Trump by the same establishment fools?
Turn-about is fair play…
Birther comments– we donot care?
But Four years as SecofState on a private clintonemail.com to talk to criminals to avoid usdotgov, yahoo, google or aol–now thw tis something BIG?
Every time I see an article like this about What The Donald said is a lie makes me laugh.

Media turds. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.
I believe you mixed up this age-old adage from Tennessee. It should be, “Fool me once, shame on – …shame on you. … Fool me – .. … … … … … … … *stare blankly into space* … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … You can’t be fooled!”
