In a presidential debate like no other, Donald Trump threatened to jail Hillary Clinton if he becomes president. In the meantime, with his flailing, hate-filled campaign self-destructing around him, he looked like he wanted to hit her.
The biggest thing he had going for him on Sunday night, besides his diehard fans, was a corporate media whose members praised his performance, quite possibly because they still want this to look like a real contest so people will keep watching them and advertisers will keep paying.
Reeling from a devastating video that recorded him effectively confessing to serial sexual assault, Trump attacked Clinton instead, trotting out alleged victims of her husband Bill Clinton. Marking the death of irony, he said Hillary Clinton should be ashamed of herself.
The Intercept’s staff live-blogged the debate, trying desperately to focus on any significant issues that matter to ordinary Americans and the rest of the world, and we identified a few.
Foremost among them was Trump’s frank acknowledgement that he totally disagrees with his running mate, Mike Pence, about how to respond to Syrian and Russian government atrocities in Syria. Pence last week declared his support for “immediately” establishing a safe zone in Syria for civilians fleeing violence. Trump declared his opposition to such a move, instead praising the Syrian, Russian, and Iranian governments for “killing ISIS.” When the mostly excellent moderator Martha Raddatz asked him to explain such an astonishing discrepancy, Trump replied, “He and I haven’t spoken and I disagree.”
Clinton, meanwhile, contradicted herself rather than her running mate, saying she supports creating “safe zones” in Syria but is against sending in any U.S. ground troops. You can’t have it both ways.
Clinton also effectively confirmed the authenticity of the presumably hacked speech excerpts, released by WikiLeaks last week, that showed her speaking more frankly than she ever does in public about her pro-corporate agenda with the groups that paid her millions in speaking fees. She said one passage was taken out of context — insisting that she was paraphrasing Abraham Lincoln, of all people — thereby making it even more incumbent upon her to release the full transcripts herself.
Our blog also featured what were effectively dueling post-mortems of Trump’s campaign. Jeremy Scahill despaired that Trump “has empowered fascists, racists, and bigots. He did not create them, but he has legitimized them by becoming the nominee and openly expressing their heinous, hateful beliefs.” (Clinton, meanwhile, “represents more of the same bipartisan warmongering.”) Zaid Jilani countered that Trump doesn’t leave behind any viable political movement, because his campaign ultimately had less to do with politics than with “demonstrating how easy it is to capture the narratives on television without really anything of substance to say.” Of course, they can both be right, and probably are.

imho, it’s rather easy to expose hellary once and for all in a more practical, albeit ‘religious’ way. it’ll take a bit of a gamble; a ruse sim to those of dubious faith snake pastors. but at this stage of the game, i think it’s worth a shot… if you ever seen one of those, you’ll recall them citing some verses; usually mark 16:17–18; before holding a deadly poisonous snake, and then willingly proceeding to be bitten by it. if they survive, then they pass the ‘test'; otherwise, they weren’t as ‘holy’ as they thought, they faith was lacking somehow, and they perished accordingly :stupidz-cough: hence, all dt has to do is ‘bluff’ challenge hitlary during the debate using the following, based mainly on philippians 2:9,10; john 3:8 and isaiah 14:12, or something sim; ‘i’ll stop campaigning, vquit the election, or whatever, if you’re able to recite the following; verbatim; the almighty god of truth and light has a son, sovereign lord of heaven and earth, and defeater of satan1 which i humbly bow in obedience, and accept as ruler and saviour of all humankind, whose name is jc11 amen111′ print a handout if necessary. this is generic christian belief and basic methodist creed that even the most infant soul or neophyte member should be able to convincingly utter without any prob; except killary, of course. she’ll fail miserably, justifying and rationalizing it somehow. or she’ll simply refuse altogether, under the notion that she doesn’t need the immediate ‘extra help’. in any event, she’ll undoubtedly reveal her true colors to the ppl by her actions, or lack thereof. since sadly nobody cared about the latest wl email rel; and their p4p, insulting, lying, biased media, etc compromising info..:( &ps; plz apologize for everything, be less confrontational and more prez like1111
Anybody with two neurons and a working synapse wanted to punch her out. She is a walking pile of bull. Better take your pants down cause Jeff Bezos is coming down the hall Danny-Boy.
Thank you for writing about this. As a woman, I was extremely aware of his stalking her on the stage that night. This is the predator stance that any woman who has been attacked, raped, or threatened knows about, and it’s NOT ok. Trump knew what he was doing, it’s the classic manipulation through fear tactics that reflects his own fear of the true weakness he carries himself in. This is classic animal behavior, posturing when you feel threatened. Pathetic, and completely inappropriate for someone who wants to be our Country’s figurehead.
We came, we saw, he died.(horrifically)
Animal posture? vs animal behavior.
Your mind is shot.
This site is getting really difficult to read. Watching a hack on a billionaire funded site like this call others the “corporate media” is pretty hard to stomach. On top of that the attitude toward the US imperial invasion of Syria has become shocking for a site that at least used to call the US government on its bullshit.
“Syrian and Russian government atrocities in Syria” No need for context in that statement.
“establishing a safe zone in Syria for civilians fleeing violence” Right, that’s what the safe zones are for, civilians, its not an annexation of pipeline corridors. After all, the benevolent US is only trying to protect the civilians from a war between an anti-Israel dictator and a surprisingly well organized, trained, funded, and armed moderate jihadist rebellion, which the US had nothing to do with.
If the US empire gave a single shit about atrocities than they wouldn’t commit them more than any other country in the world today. If they cared about civilians than they wouldn’t have started the disastrous Syria proxy war in the first place. I used to think this site realized that, but now it seems like one of those pseudoliberal Soros “slightly left of fascism” sites that litter the internet.
I suppose that I ought to be flattered that someone is onnc again posting in my name – albeit from the opposite end of the political spectrum. Truth be told, I suspect that is just anther of a set of cowardly acts that are routinely employed by the Intercept’s most MONArchical apologist and pretender. Such desperate measures would br rather comical if they were not first perceived as desperate….
“insisting that she was paraphrasing Abraham Lincoln, of all people”
The paraphrasing Lincoln part was no doubt a bit about the quiet joys of drone murder and bayonet rape. Lincoln often invoked such sentiments.
Her alluding to Lincoln is even worse than it initially seems. In the comparison, she cites his need to balance a public and private position in order to get the 13th Amendment passed. So, since her reasons for a public & private reason are to further corporations, she’s comparing the horror of slavery with the horror of better banking and corporate legislation! The importance of abolition with the importance of greasing financial wheels. What fucking gall.
brilliant observation. thanks.
While the fact-checking & truth-telling are why I come to this website–a much-needed source of information in this world–I would actually disagree with one piece of analysis.
I realize there is plenty of reason to believe that Donald Trump has essentially imploded his chances of winning the election; I’m just not quite sure I agree.
I have always maintained that–even though I despise the man with every fiber of my being, was a Bernie Sanders supporter in the major-party nominating process, & am now a Dr. Jill Stein supporter–if Donald Trump wanted to win this election, his best strategy would be to essentially do what he had been doing in most of the GOP Primary debates & in the last half or so of the second Presidential debate: attack his opponent Hillary Clinton on every level & at every turn. Get her into a constant tit-for-tat with him on everything; the smaller & more meaningless the issue you’re fighting over, the better. Why, you ask?
The Intercept has actually reported on this in a tangential way when they reported awhile back on the fact that Donald Trump is actually NOT winning over the so-called “white, working-class vote,” as it were; their numbers have been steadily dropping over the past few decades, most likely due to the establishment’s over-arching corruption that only serves the donor class & not anyone else. After all, if you’re utterly ignored by those in office regardless of which major party is in power, then why bother voting in the first place?
Now add to that the fact that there is a partisan advantage proportional to the level of voter turnout. At a certain level of turnout, the partisan advantage is neutral. However, the bigger the turnout, the more it helps Democrats, &–this is key–the SMALLER the turnout, the more it helps REPUBLICANS . . . across the board.
If Donald Trump manages to TURN OFF enough voters to the point where THEY DON’T EVEN BOTHER TO VOTE, then he has a real shot at winning this election. Not only that, but expand the GOP’s margin in the House & win back the Senate.
“But the polls say it’s over!” . . . Maybe. Maybe not. If their turnout models are overestimating the number of people who will actually vote, we could have a “Dewey-Defeats-Truman” moment again.
“That’ll never happen.” REMEMBER: this is why the Republicans have had success in the Congressional mid-term elections; the voter turnout is so low–in Indiana, the turnout in 2014 was below 30%; this is how they obtained & maintain their supermajorities in the General Assembly in Indianapolis–the GOP sails to victory, not just in Congress but in the statehouses & governors’ mansions across the country.
It is worth noting that the only way this is possible is because his opponent is universally-reviled as well, if not to the degree he is, but more importantly, is an arch-establishment figure of the incumbent party in the White House. Had Bernie Sanders been given the nomination at the DNC–LOL, ikr?–Sanders would be WELL above 50% AND building a wave big enough to not just expand the Democrats’ majority in the Senate, but retake the House as well & who knows how many statehouses & governors’ mansions across this country.
Thanks, Corporate America.
P.S. I can’t even imagine what Evan Bayh’s ads would look like trying to ride Bernie Sanders’ coattails to victory over Todd Young in the Indiana U.S. Senate race. (Full Disclosure: I’m not voting for either one of these candidates; I’m not even sure if there’s anyone I CAN vote for in that race; I may just skip it altogether)
REMEMBER: Here’s how to vote for Jill Stein for President in your state:
http://www.jill2016.com/ballot_access
P.S. “48 states” is not a typo. They are counting the District of Columbia as a state. After all, the name of the party there is “DC Statehood/Green Party.”
Trump is only reviled among LGBT,zionists and concern trolls of divide and conquer,American patriots love the guy,and America haters don’t.
And we’ll count the votes on Nov.8 to see the victor.
I found the fascist.
If you take the net favorability ratings for each major-party candidate from just the last 2 weeks in September, Hillary Clinton is the most reviled Presidential candidate in the modern era at -13.8% . . . except for Donald Trump, whose net favorability rating through the same time period was -23.6%. The truth is, the majority of Americans DESPISE BOTH of these major-party candidates & any search through the stories on this website alone will tell you why that is.
For the love of God, corruption infects everything our government & corporate sectors do. It was Black folks who were deliberately targeted by banks & mortgage brokers to be scammed into taking out unsafe & insecure subprime loans while qualifying for more secure & better loans & not being told–which, by the way, is fraud, an actual crime–way more than any other ethnic group in the country & it was those subprime loans that were lumped together into securities, magically given super-secure triple-A ratings by the ratings agencies, & traded on the markets well above their value that imploded the global economy.
It’s government & corporate corruption that had the Congress spend a third of its scheduled annual session on swipe fees for debit & credit cards–that pitted the whole banking sector against Wal-Mart & the retail sector–while no one was scheduling time to talk about vets & deal with the problems at the VA. Furthermore, there are almost never any long-serving Representatives in the Veterans Affairs Committee. They’re almost all first-time Representatives because there are no deep-pocketed, wealthy individuals, corporations, or business sectors with any business before such a committee–although we should look out for private health insurance companies looking to destroy the VHA so they can sell lemon insurance policies to vets just like payday lenders used to be able to do to vets & still can to any civilian.
(Sidenote: it’s also interesting how payday lenders–many with big banks as large shareholders in such companies–locate themselves in around Black communities in America but commercial bank branches rarely, if ever, do)
It’s government & corporate corruption that forced LGBTQ groups like Human Rights Campaign & Lambda Legal to beseech their corporate overlords to decide to grant LGBTQ folks in Indiana a reprieve from further discrimination against them during the Religious Freedom Restoration Act controversy. Don’t get it twisted: I’m glad that RFRA was defanged somewhat–although, now, there are reports of bad parents using it as a defense for child abuse–so that at least LGBTQ folks don’t have to suffer any more discrimination at the hands of those who hide their bigotry behind their religion.
However, the idea that the best strategy for defending the rights of anyone is to beseech our corporate masters to flex their economic & political might on one group of people’s behalf or another’s simply proves that they already have that power when it comes to ANYTHING affecting their bottom line. That’s why mayors, governors, & any other political heavyweights essentially turn into salesmen trying to pitch their corner of America as more deserving than any other place on Earth for more oh-so precious jobs that only they can possibly create. Why only them? Because our free trade agreements force us to compete with workers in countries with far lesser-developed economies & far lower standards of living–& either no concept of organized labor or no legal way to organize labor–who make pennies a day. That strategy stifles new competition from new businesses that sprout up due to better wages & benefits from existing jobs that those folks with such jobs feel secure enough to take such a risk in the first place & all that happens because of laws that demanded universal healthcare, living-wage laws, & labor laws.
This strategy of divide & conquer has existed throughout the history of our nation. It has always existed in the South to keep the Southern aristocracy on top in the past & now Corporate America benefits from the same strategy. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. taught us once during a speech he gave in 1965 while fighting for the Voting Rights Act about how slavery was used by the antebellum Southern aristocracy to keep wages low for white folks working for them or other businesses in the South. After the Civil War, the Southern aristocracy simply arrested Black folks for ridiculously small offenses, put them to work for nothing–or next to nothing–& told white folks working for them that they could always have Black folks do their work instead.
So Black & White Southerners started working together to bring about the Populist Movement so they could end the bad economic circumstances for Black & White alike while simultaneously working against racism’s stranglehold on the southern way of life. The Southern aristocracy had other ideas, using racism in order to maintain such abysmally low standards of living & wages. That was what prompted the Southern aristocracy to create Jim Crow. Segregation was as much an economic tool of divide & conquer as it was a tool of racial oppression.
Do you seriously think that it’s merely a coincidence that at the same time systemic corruption within the corridors of political & economic power has never been more omnipresent that we’ve also seen a movement in Black Lives Matter form & build to fight a racist criminal-justice system that would see everyone of them either dead or in prison?
This is why I cannot in good conscience vote for EITHER Hillary Clinton OR Donald Trump, because they both take money from the same big banks, the same big oil companies, the same pharmaceutical companies, etc., etc., etc. Corporate America has always given large sums of money–if not equal sums–to both major-party candidates in a given race so they know they’re going to get what they want regardless of what the politician has said. Donald Trump started raising money from them the instant John Kasich, his last primary opponent, dropped out of the nominating race, & now he is Corporate America’s hedge against their own bet that Hillary will win as she is also their preferred candidate. If Donald Trump were ever actually a threat to them, they would’ve torpedoed his candidacy in an instant after the Iowa Caucus results came in.
It’s also why Bernie Sanders lost in the end against Hillary. He was cheated out of victory by the corruption he vowed to wage war against. A vow Corporate America knew to take seriously.
It’s also why you occasionally heard about Gary Johnson–until his Aleppo moment–but almost never have heard of Dr. Jill Stein. Gary Johnson’s Libertarian ideology is very friendly to them. Couple that with the fact that he would likely take more votes from Donald than Hillary & that made him somewhat useful to Corporate America. They find nothing advantageous about Dr. Jill Stein. She is the biggest threat to them in this race by far & is one of the main reasons I’m voting for her.
Another has to do with the third of the three things Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. fought against. We’ve already covered racism–& any discrimination against any of various minorities–& extreme materialism. The third he talked about was militarism. I had a lot of friends sent over to Iraq when Bush & Cheney decided to invade. Horribly, not all of them made it back. Unfortunately, that wasn’t just a Bush/Cheney failure. It was a military-industrial complex failure, one we have repeated in Afghanistan, Syria, Yemen, Libya, & Somalia, creating new groups to fight in the process. In Afghanistan, it was the original Al Qaeda. In Iraq & Syria, it was Al-Qaeda in Iraq, which eventually turned into DAESH–they hate being called that as opposed to ISIS, so that’s why I call them that. In Yemen, it was Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, which is being helped by the US-Saudi military campaign being waged there. In Somalia, it was al-Shabaab. In Libya, it’s various people creating their own groups that either pledge allegiance to a group they’ve already heard of, like DAESH or Al Qaeda, or something apart from them. Heck, the Nigerian military’s actions are directly responsible for Boko Haram’s current existence.
We’ve had ground troops in Afghanistan for 15 years. We had ground troops in Iraq for nine years before we left briefly & now we’re back in there. It’s only a matter of time before they are sent across the border into Syria. Generals in the Pentagon are agitating for ground troops in Libya. This will happen regardless of whether Hillary or Donald win this election. If Jill Stein wins, however, it won’t happen. Period. I’d say these are some damn good reasons to vote for Jill Stein of the Green Party, wouldn’t you?
Im sick if the media. They are becoming as bad as countries in which there is only ONE polical view which is acceptable. The press are the BULLIES. Donald didn’t say HE would jail Hillary but that she should be in jail. There is a DIFFERENCE BETWEEN these two statements. WHERE HAS OBJECTIVE REPORTING GONE WHEREBY YOU present THE FACTS and allow people to make up their minds. I’m sick if you all.
This is garbage, we all know she should have faced severe consequences from the whole email fiasco, and she got a pass. That´s what Trump was saying and it was true.
The whole moral card coming from Hillary supporters is pure madness, she is responsible for destroying a whole country and the dead and suffering of hundreds of thousands, nothing that Trump has done comes even close. You want to do the right thing, vote a third party.
The author must live in some alternate universe! Trump handled Hellary in the debate, controlled himself, (yes most men dream of strangling her) and acted very Presidential.
Trump won the debate overwhelmingly! Hellary for JAIL!!!
“Most men want to strangle her?” I wouldn’t vote for her, but that comment reveals YOUR attitude. What if your daughter wanted to be president?
Hey moron, his daughter wouldn’t murder and be gleeful about it like your zero, the Hell bitch.
Apology for the the Hell bitch friendly comment, but evil has no gender, and her actions are definitely in the depraved category, and deserve no defense, especially over her sex.
What does the daughter angle mean?
And no,I don’t want to strangle her,but if she collapsed and croaked on the street,eh.
I don’t think Donald Trump is responsible for the empowerment of a generation of Male Chauvinist Pigs; I think he has just stepped forward to represent a large and already-existing electoral body. The choice between him and Hillary is the choice between dog shit and cat shit for dinner.
I am truly saddened that you are picking through the ruins of these peoples’ politics trying to find scraps of humanity – there are none. Walk away, make your own world, begin again, disarm the crazy people. Reject these hateful cunts or accept their tyranny and the pronounce the time of death on US democracy.
I am not impressed with a single person from the USA right now. A nation of pathetic inadequacy that has designs to rule the world. My nose hurts from face-palming so much.
And which perfect nation do you live in?
Call them what you will–safe zones, no-fly zones–the result could easily be American jets confronting Russian jets. You cannot banish the planes of other nations without being committed to shooting them down. Is that what anyone really wants, other than the defense industry? On this point, I agree with Trump. Hillary and her neocon advisors don’t seem to care. That woman scares me, but Trump scares me more.
especially when the planes of certain other nations have the international legal right to fly there, unlike the planes of this nation…
As to committed to confronting and shooting down Russian jets, Hillary certainly wants this. Whatever floats her WWIII.
An important task assigned to each party by the Oligarchs is to keep their candidate in line. The Democrats are fulfilling that duty quite well as the Oligarchy likes people like Hillary who are easy to keep in line. But the Republicans have failed. Trump is not the well behaved candidate that Jeb Bush would have been. Or that George W. was. If Bernie had been what he appeared to be then that would have been trouble for the Democrats–but either bribes or blackmail brought him back in line. Each party attacks the citizens in different ways. Sexism, racism, diversity and multiculturalism, language and so forth tend to hobble people and are quite effective. The right continuously threatens to pinch pennies in worthwhile areas while squandering it in others like the Pentagon which has now 9 trillion $ unaccounted for! MIA’s are nothing. The military is good at losing track. Don’t be fooled; neither party has your best interests at heart unless you are an oligarch in which case you are not wasting your time reading the Intercept. Perhaps unknowingly most writers for the Intercept are part of the Machine to keep the natives quiet . . . which means avoid adding too much that is true to the articles or else you will stir the pot too much or rock the boat too hard or spoil the soup.
BOTH TRUMP AND CLINTON ARE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE
Vote for Jill Stein, because not being a corporatist, militarist and imperialist really does matter.
Donald Trump is an old time Liberal. Say from the days before JFK. I don’t think he has any real interest in wars other than finishing off ISIS if that is even possible at this late date. He is not dangerous though Hilary is. Candidates must say a few bellicose things now and then to keep people happy. Trump will focus on building things. Over the years MSM has done a rather good job of misinforming the citizen so that if someone says something good about Russia they must be a communist or like dictators. A presidential candidate has to struggle with a fairly badly informed society. The Truth even if it is something good may not go down well; and MSM is always ready to remind people if they overlook it. I believe the Intercept has fallen into the Trap of trading in deceptive news and false facts. Hillary being an attorney is always quick to use diversionary devices to fool people; she is not a good person. Jill Stein is no doubt a good person. If Trump wins by a landslide it will not matter if a few vote for her.
*Dan,
This isn’t journalism, son. What you’ve written here is the epitome of partisan propaganda.
Perhaps it has come time to schedule that lunch with Mackey to discuss how you both might find it more intellectually rewarding writing for the Daily Kos.
**The Intercept/Betsy,
Although it may be imperceptible to you, each time you publish an article like this you incrementally lose credibility. Although you may not appreciate it, you have set your course to becoming just another nothing rag afloat in a sea of corporate media mediocrity. Greenwald, Scahill, Brown, and the other quality journalists you have contributing can only lift all boats so high (esp. when you give voice to an ever increasing number of integrity anchors).
Given The Intercept’s noble beginnings, you have an opportunity to remain one of the very few beacons of legitimate journalism. For all our sakes, I hope you’ll right your course while there’s still time.
***Glenn,
I love you man. Thank you for everything. You don’t need The Intercept to be great. Don’t let them drag you down with them. Know we’ll follow you anywhere you go.
Well stated. As a former fan of The Intercept, I now say goodbye after reading this drivel. How anyone can spend time bashing a rude and crude businessman when he is running against such evil is beyond my comprehension.
i think the intercept may have been hacked…it keeps redirecting to some random shitty salon.com article. have you tried turning it off and then on again?
too bad you couldn’t have waited on this one…you were just short of being the 1,000,000th bourgeois whiner to declare trump’s campaign “over”. no free t-shirt for you.
as for “sexual assault” and “he ‘looked like’ he was going to ‘hit her'”…wow. way to venture into gloria allred-level self parody. if you think standing around looking annoyed and occasionally throwing out non-sequiturs equals “unhinged” (or whatever bullshit adjective you MSNBC types agreed on before the debate even started) then you have lived an even more sheltered and pampered life than your effete whining would have us believe.
as for the talking point that raddatz (or lester holt) were anything other than robotic school marms…please. a random person off the street could have performed as well or better.
i can’t stand trump, but i acknowledge he handed clinton her ass on a silver plater last night while she seemed as botoxed and overly rehearsed as she did in the first debate. every single utterance was something she’s repeated hundreds of times at press conferences and public events…only this time the “no questions allowed” stance usually adopted by her and her handlers wasn’t applicable. raddatz tried to be her gatekeeper (and sounded like a brain dead neocon on foreign policy) but failed in her duties. it’s a shame that it had to be trump, but it was a breath of fresh air seeing someone berate clinton the way she berates everyone “beneath” her.
Lol exactly
Stop unshifting you stupid son of a bitch! It’s confusing me!!!
This is just bad reporting and bad commentary. The emphasis on Trump at Intercept is always negative. One quick glance tells me it would be a waste of time and energy to take in the whole article. So one point Hillary does deserve to be tried for a number of things. The reader here deserve a more mature and reflective sort of coverage. This got written by an algorithm.
EXACTLY.
TOTALLY SICK OF THE PRESS
Here’s an amusing story: the people who actually have controlling power in the U.S. are coming to the fore – the battle of the billionaires:
http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-election-buffett-idUSKCN12A1Z0
“Buffett hits back at Trump over tax comments”
Here’s a good debate question, that will never be asked: “In the 1950s and 1960s, the top tax bracket was 90%, and the American economy was very healthy – so why shouldn’t we go back to that kind of tax structure?”
Warren Buffet’s net worth is what, $50 billion? And he paid about $2 million in tax – let’s see, that’s 1/2500th of his net worth – .004%. How does that compare to the rest of the United States?
http://www.mybudget360.com/the-average-net-worth-by-age-real-estate-boost-housing-net-worth/
Wake up – this isn’t a democratic system of government, this is government run by oligarchs and plutocrats, who use politicians like GW Bush, Barak Obama and Hillary Clinton (and their control over media outlets) as their tools to maintain the status quo. Trump has broken the rules by not having a sleazy two-faced politician act as his sock puppet; that’s why the other plutocrats are so upset.
Sell your soul to the devil, and you too can have a piece of the pie! Just don’t look in any mirrors, it’ll be too depressing, and you’ll start hitting the bottle all the time.
The mutual name calling by the proponents of Clinton and Trump, including their accusations of TI for being too focused on one or the other, is not really helpful, and ignores the real long-term down sides of this election. One particular aspect that seems to have escaped everyone’s attention is the likely de-democritazition of the republicans’ primary process. You can be sure that the republican elites are secretly envious of how the democrats were able to tilt the playing field so as to get Hillary nominated, and wishing they had a mechanism for preventing Trump from getting the nomination. I predict that the republicans will alter their process, tout-suite, to ensure that only insiders have the opportunity to garner the next presidential nomination. Thus in the short term, at least, both branches of the Party are reverting to the smoke-filled-room model they used before primaries became the advertised mode of candidate selection.
What is it that we have to bow down to FPotusa and never call them to correct themselves. Lets have some Justice :JUSTICE DELAYED IS JUSTICE DENIED.
Sign Petition TO CLOSE DOWN CLINTON FOUNDATION.
Thank you.
Close down The Clinton Foundation?!
Heck no!!
If Her Royal Highness gets elected on November 8th the American people would be better served to keep Slick Willie in Chappaqua and busy with the foundation and golf and “The Energizer” than to have him prowling the halls of The White House having serious policy meetings on the economy and that “crazy” ACA health care system.
Besides, it would probably be best to give Hillary and Huma some much needed (and deserved!) privacy!
Froomkin I can assure you I don’t like either of the candidates. Trump is a Cad extraordinaire in my opinion and Hillary is a wretched compulsive liar that will do anything to cover her ignorant decisions and then never takes responsibility for anything unless you catch her with the blood on her hands.
We have no choice for President of the United States from either of the main political parties, none.
However, what Donald Trump was guilty of is the very same thing that every man I have ever known is guilty of when it comes to standing around in a group and speaking about women. I don’t give a damn who it is, most of the time that is the way the conversation goes. Like it or not, as far as mannerisms he is the first ‘real’ American citizen candidate we have ever had running for President of he United States. It sucks, but its true. He may very well do a great job as President, who am I to say, I really don’t know. What I do know, is that nobody else really knows either.
We do, on the other hand have a pretty good idea of how Hillary would govern. We’ve had the blueprint for the last 8 years.
We have a dilemma on our hands. Women really do seem to be getting in the way don’t they. I’ll tell you what you do, find the movie with Paul Newman called “The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean” and that movie will help you understand the people and the professions who have screwed up our lives in this country. Enjoy! lol
I will vote for Gary Johnson and William Weld.
Speak for yourself, dude. I for one have never grabbed a woman by her kitty-cat, much less bragged to anyone about doing it. And, though I’ve been in my share of locker rooms, I do not recall ever hearing anyone bragging about assaulting a woman. I guess you and I come from different social backgrounds or something. Maybe you have more in common with Trump than you’d like to admit.
Really now.He never assaulted anyone,he was just being vulgar, something that was evident long ago,and was and is a trait of many, including bent dick and his user,HRC,another potty mouthed person.
LBJ was also vulgar, and but for Vietnam, would be remembered as a great POTUS.
So it’s irrelevant, and just hyperbolic finger pointing,as indeed most males have at times have been similarly graphic, and if they were actually assaults, there would have been legal consequences.
What?!? Raddetz was great, Trump already lost so the media is saying he won the debate to try to maintain ratings for a month, and oh Trump “looked like he wanted to hit” Hillary.
Citations and supporting evidence? All circular. Raddetz was great because Biddle said so. The media has Trump’s survival in their best interest because Jilani said so, citing Fang quoting a CBS executive about Trump staying in the GOP nomination (see all those impressive logical jumps there?). Just a hint — if your reasoning leads you to the conclusion that “media” wants Trump to win, you might want to check yourself. And who knows what Trump’s thinking? Why, MACKEY, of course(!), the most accomplished Trump fiction writer worldwide.
Ask yourself — would anybody ever come to this site if there was no Greenwald?
I watched the debate. I despise both candidates. Trump won hands down, and “because you’d be in jail” is the single greatest debate line in U.S. presidential history. You might have mentioned that, you know, in the process of reporting on the debate.
P.S. — Jilani: “Throughout his life, Trump has done little more than seek attention and every facet of him seems designed to get it.” …says the professional writer about the person that has 7 more NYT bestsellers than he does.
I have to agree with others Dan, this article could have been written by the DNC itself. Where to begin?
1. “Trump effectively confessed to serial sexual assault…”. Pure unadulterated bullshit.
2. Trump “totally disagrees with his running mate…”. Tolerating differences of opinion in ones running mate is a sign of maturity and strength.
3. Dueling postmortems? What is going to happen when the Intercept’s readers learn that the rumor’s of Trump’s political death have been greatly exaggerated by the same people who once believed that he never had a chance in the first place…?
Polling suggests that the race is a dead heat (within the margin of error). Clinton had Trump’s head on a chopping block and the moderators repeatedly endeavored to hand her a sharpened axe. Yet Hillary failed to deliver the fatal blow. Why? Because she was rattled by the skeletons in her own closet. When she heard that a number of Bill Clinton’s victims were seated in the audience, all she could think about was how she chronically enabled the very types of sexually reprehensible behavior in her husband that were being speciously attributed to Trump.
When I heard Anderson Cooper accusing Donald Trump of “sexual assault” last night when Trump said on the video, “When ever I see a beautiful woman I am drawn to them like a magnet. I just want to kiss them”, I thought, ‘Yeah, well, Trump and every other red-blooded American male!’ And the part about “grabbing their crotches” I thought, ‘3rd base!’
My guess is that 99.9% of the women Trump wanted to “kiss” wanted to be kissed and if they didn’t Trump would take “no” for an answer.
Trump understands the difference between “seduction” and “sexual assault”.
Apparently Anderson Cooper and Bill Clinton do not.
Bill Clinton (allegedly) raping Juanita Broaddrick comes to mind on the “assault” issue when he walked out the door and turned to see blood dripping down Juanita’s lip and casually said, “Better get some ice on that,” and left.
Indeed, “locker room” talk by either sex is always rather ribald and pretentious. Nobody bothered to take note of the fact that Trump’s actual behavior varied markedly upon being met by Arianne Zucker. It was little Billy Bush who was the driving force behind a lot of this. In fact, I would not be surprised to learn that it was Billy who set this up from the get go. It never ceases to amaze me at how gullible educated liberals can be when faced with the opportunity to confirm their own bias..,or dishonest when attempting to play to the bias of their intended audience.
Good for you Charlene for seeing things as they truly are. Thanks for the feedback.
What is draw dropping is the Manufactured Consent going on with the Media.
“Tonight: Reruns of Sex in the City where the gals exchange ribald stories of their latest encounters. Followed by the premier of American Red Light: Swing Clubs in Tampa. But first, why is Donald Trump not in prison for assaulting every woman in America with his uncouth language? Be warned, this debate may interact with those who still wear whalebone corsets. But first a word from our sponsors: Acme Fainting Couch and Dr. Quackenshill’s patented Smelling Salts for Virtuous Ladies of Quality.”
The “Believe the Victim” seems to apply when there is no victim (trash talking between guys on a bus) but not where there are 3 victims making allegations (actually in one of those three, receiving almost a million in settlement money).
Irony is alive. It is exemplified by self-described progressive writers who think that their duty to the public is to amplify breaches of social etiquette and downplay corruption and war crimes.
Interesting how those are problems all of the sudden now that it’s a woman president. American’s sure are morally worthless.
It becomes more obvious with each passing day that
Donald Trump is the choice for misogynistic xenophobic racists
while
Hillary Clinton is the choice for hypocritical liars who say they are
opposed to the agenda of neocons who, it just so happens,
are attracted to Clinton because they share her willingness
to slaughter and pollute on a global scale in the name
of exceptionally arrogant corporate greed.
Supporting either of these lowlifes as if either one of them is
deserving of anything beyond confinement is apparently
the great (NOT) mission of the majority of voters in the faking U$A.
Liberal hypocrites and neocon predators versus desperate thugs.
This new low is only a precursor of much worse to come with
the election of either of these two frauds.
At this point, Jill Stein is the only decent candidate. The rest of
those running are privatizing corporate tools.
What utter propaganda. The Intercept is now parroting CNN! It is ironic that the Intercept went from supporting Ed Snowden, to shilling for the democratic party — whose leaders wanted to kill or capture him.
I don’t think Ed Snowden risked his life so the Intercept and hacks like Dan Froomkin could churn out campaign propaganda for the war criminal Hillary Clinton — a woman who wanted to kill by drone another journalist — Julian Assange.
I call on Ed Snowden to denounce the Intercept as a partisan rag in service of its owner Pierre Omidyar who gave $100,000 dollars to an anti-trump PAC. Whatever you call yourselves at the Intercept … please don’t call yourself journalists.
“owner Pierre Omidyar who gave $100,000 dollars to an anti-trump PAC.”
you aught to provide citation for this.
They should all shut up since as long as they open their oligarchic mouths they self destruct.
Retain your dignity, disangage from this farce. BOYCOTT THIS ABHORENT REGIME.
It seems that either candidate if elected will further polarize the public, dividing the nation and further shredding our social fabric. I feel that we are already so divided as a society that neither candidate offers any real hope. We are trapped by a corrupt system and nobody has considered an alternative mechanism to undo this corruption. I still advocate a direct democracy, I would rather vote on every issue before the nation than vote for the current corrupt candidates and their parties minions. Idealism is dead in this country when our choice is the lesser of two evils, we still get evil. This evil, in my humble opinion will lead to civil war if allowed to continue. It is a very sad time for the USA.
There are more than two parties, you know.
The rigged electoral college makes any third party bid impossible. I think Jill Stein is the only rational actor in this campaign. Please tell me what are her chances of winning the presidency in this rigged system?
Maybe none right now. Four years? If the Greens get 5%, they get subsidies. If they try new ways to get to the voters, they can get more.
In 2011, a new party was started in Georgia- the state, not the country. It was called the Georgian Dream. They were considered to not be a major threat- Clinton didn’t even visit the party’s leader when she visited Georgia not long before the election. They stood firm and campaigned against the corrupt UNM government under Mikhail Saakashvili. In the election, Georgian Dream won. They began investigating the previous government and prosecuting fraud. In response, the US and EU condemned them and refused to extradite many of the accused and convicted Georgian officials. (Now, quite a few, including Saakashvili are holding government posts in Ukraine.) A few weeks ago, there were elections in Georgia. Nobody pronounced them unfair (though, they also said the 2012 Ukraine presidential election was fair), and Georgian Dream continued to stay in power.
how do you get a GEORGE III type government out without a violent revolution or civil war? I live in kansas, am a progressive but can’t get rid of Brownback who is a corporate ass licker that gives tax dollars away to big business at the expense of our childrens education. the republicans probably have more guns than the army. who will the pentagon side with? i want a redress of grievances like the constitution says we have a right to! one man one woman one vote with no redistricting!
I can see it now,LGBT,feminists and zionists rioting in the streets when Trump wins.A civil war that they would lose handily.
Sheesh.
How anyone could vote for this totally corrupt pos,who has the total backing of the serial liars who are serially lying again,is an expose on the hypocrisy of every Hell Bitch supporter, and a sign of their complete divorce from reality. The vagina monologues, and more divide and conquer idiocy, from the vapid.
Leaving the serious journalism to Glenn and Lee this turn, eh Dan?
I’m not voting for Trump or Hillary, but this kind of partisan screed is hard to ignore and TheIntercept (given it’s birth) deserves better.
When sociopathic Hillary was a young lawyer she got a rapist of a 12 year old girl off (yes he was convicted and served not much time) and laughed about it; yes it’s on video. Lately she led the charge to do regime change in Libya and famously, again on tape, (we came, we saw, he died..LOL); like Bernie Sanders who has been a good guy all his life; she has been a Lady Macbeth all her life. We sure choose very sick people for our leaders but that’s what we do. Nice guys really do finish last, sociopaths finish first; they can be smooth like Regan or in your face nasty like Thatcher but they are all sociopaths. Nader got very few votes, Stein will get very few votes and while I don’t put Sanders in the same category he would be the best POTUS since FDR and he got shafted by the establishment of the party..a very sick system.
And when such people are promoted by the media (be they in news or entertainment- see the killing of a Julian Assange expy by self-described high-functioning sociopath Sherlock Holmes on the BBC’s loose adaptation of the stories), it’s very disturbing.
Alright, I found the tape: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tor00iWUhDQ and listened to it.
The first thing I’ll say is that she laughs twice, and neither time is it about the victim. What it’s about is stupid courtroom procedure. She says that the defendant passed a polygraph test and this forever destroyed her faith in polygraphs, and she says that the prosecutors had a pair of underpants, cut out the part with the blood, and threw that part away leaving a pair of underpants with a hole in it and no usable evidence even for the best experts of the time. These things were funny to her because they were INCOMPETENT, CRUMMY PROCEDURE, not because she was sticking it to the victim.
The other thing I’ll say is that as someone who laughs a lot at ‘inappropriate’ times, I have a lot of sympathy for her. I mean fuck, the World Trade Center was some of the funniest shit I ever watched on TV — in part because of the moronic musings of “could it be terrorism?”, in part because of the remarkable audacity to go from a painted cardboard box to a broken building based on all the be-a-sheep-and-do-what-they-say instructions the Competent Authorities had been giving us for so many years, and mostly because I’d thought it was going to be so much more lethal than it was that it was as if nothing had happened – I mean, I’d expected when the attack came the whole buildings would fall over right after the planes hit, everybody inside dead, collapsing onto others like dominoes and taking out some string of skyscrapers across the city … of course, to the inquisitor who expects every laugh to be carefully explained, justified on triplicate paperwork, pinned out on a dissection table, such an admission is anathema. But though I can understand criticizing her for being part of a legal system that put rape victims on trial, I won’t blame her for laughing about its other problems.
She didn’t laugh at the poor 12 year old girl; she laughed about various screw ups. Personally, I couldn’t find anything funny to laugh at. She has the same kind of sick humor cops develop to deal with the nastiness in their job lives, it’s called black humor. They subhumanize criminals so they can feel good screwing them; Hillary does the same and she inadvertently let the cat out of the deplorable bag in an unguarded moment. Hillary rides high above what the cops see but has the same attitude about most working Americans; remember her saying she was going to put the hard working coal miners out of work Of course she recovers well with a cover up. Trump recovered poorly from his big mouth and he had enough time to find a way to capitalize on the opportunity to do a real fall on his sword contrition act. Two very sick candidates IMHO.
so true
I take issue with the statement that Trump would create a fascist environment. Factually, America is already a Fascist Police State. There is no getting around that.
Also to refute your titles assertion that Trump ‘self destructed’ I would point out that with the Koch brothers massive funding behind Voter Cross Checking this opinion only lives in your mind. In reality huge swaths of traditional Democratic voters have been scrubbed from the ballots in key states before they even vote.
i.e. they will vote and leave totally unaware that their name has been electronically ‘cross checked’ and their vote cancelled.
Also at issue is the fact that you are ignoring all those who are voting for Trump as a message. They know that between two evils one will only run for 4 years while the others ‘backers’ will see to it she serves for a total of 8 years (2 terms) with incumbent advantage. There is no way that Trump can be run for a 2nd term. The strategy here is that we suffer only 4 years of exactly the same powerful interests behind the scenes advancing their agendas as opposed to 8 years of ‘business as usual’ (which we can no longer afford).
This strategy gives other, more viable candidates for real change, a chance to capitalize off of Bernie’s success sooner and not waste an additional 4 years.
But more importantly a Trump win assures 3 things – a direct hit to the baloney 2 party system by damaging the Republican party and showing the equal incompetence & corruption of the Democratic Party by them losing to a fool like Trump. Without these two key events happening the 3rd important advantage doesn’t take place and that is the opening of the door to a multiparty platform that won’t happen if Hillary wins.
You watched & perceived the debate as a spectator and not as a thinking journalist.
Why wait 4 years when you can vote third party right now?
Register your displeasure this election by taking your vote AWAY from the 2 ruling parties. The objective is for the Demorepublican to win with only 39% of the vote. I cannot see how it would not be embarrassing for them to win with the lowest percentage in the last 150 years.
Make election night an anticlimax. Vote third party.
if you think third party vote can win you must be dropping acid. maybe in four years if they start running for the next election right after this one and only if we could get 75% of the people in the u.s. to go out and vote. i agree with don dent the votes will be scrubbed especially in kansas where it has been going on for years which is where voter fraud really happens…before the election not during the election like republicans think.
I never said that a third party can win and I haven’t dropped acid since 1980.
Winning the election is not the point. Having the Democrat or Republican (Demorepublic) win with the lowest percentage of votes since Abraham Lincoln’s first election in 1860 would be a BIG WIN for me.
Neither of these mainstream candidates is worthy of our votes. If you want your vote to count, vote third party.
forgot to mention in my comment, but since you bring up the koch brothers: both moderators are CNN talking heads. watch CNN for any amount of time and you’ll see ads from (wait for it) koch industries. and lockheed. and boeing.
the creepiest part of the last few weeks has been watching the republicans (a division of koch industries) sync up with the clintonians and close ranks against trump. one of the most blatant displays of a one-party system i’ve seen in a while (that didn’t involve praising or aiding israel in some way).
This election is all about Israel, can’t you tell?
Every partisan of zion hates Trump.
His statement of neutrality re I-P started this whole propaganda attack, and America First is hated by those Israeli mole traitors,as an affront to their total control of America.
Need billboards?Neon lights a hundred foot tall?Skywriting?
Never before in our nations history has such naked BS been issued by dual citizen traitors to deny US democracy.
These assholes will rue the day.
The political elites who control our American House of Cards oppose Trump like no candidate has been opposed in history. The latest to jump on the Dump Trump Truck were Condosleeza and Arnold Swartzinator. The elite plutocrats ranged against Trump comprise a formidable array: Senators, former Presidents, CEOs of Megacorps, the Lords of Wall Street, the Barons of Technology, former Cabinet Secretaries, former Heads of Government Agencies, Bankers and Financiers, Media Syndicates and the list goes on, of the rich and powerful who form the echelon who are ranged against him. Yet these are the very ones who have sold us short and voted us into never-ending wars. These are the ones who have taken our money and lined their own pockets with it. These practice the craft of duplicity and lying is their stock-in-trade. Everyone should ask: “Why do these fear Trump, with such grim foreboding and cosmic dread?” Trump – who often seems more like a caricature in a farce than a serious candidate. They fear Trump because his buffoonery, like that of a lampooning jester or a clowning schoolboy, mocks them and the duplicity of their abject misrule. Trump threatens the carefully contrived and phony imagery of “Liburtee & Justass fer Y’all” scrawled on the facade of our House of Cards. Trump, like some “fool” playing with matches may yet set this rickety ephemeral illusion alight! Trump is a loose cannon and an x-factor. He’s both “mercurial” and “capricious” and while these terms may not define “safe and secure,” they do outline concepts that are necessary for “change.” And when change comes, who can really tell what form it must take? What these ruling elites fear most is that they will lose control to Trump, who is like a Joker prancing through our House of Cards. A joker, who has suddenly appeared in this game which they carefully control. In a card game, when you hold a Joker the outcome always changes. There is no longer certainty. The “rules” are altered. If you’ve been dealt a lousy hand but you hold the Joker, you might still win a hand in a game with a marked deck!
They hate Trump because they are all just like Trump, but they wear a mask in public to hide this basic fact.
When Hillary Clinton said to her Wall Street handlers that “you have to have a public and a private position,” she was saying that privately, she is just as self-centered and greedy and contemptuous of average people as Trump is (not that she hides it very well), but for her public image, she has an army of makeup artists and pet reporters and “surrogates” who work overtime to present an image of normal decent person.
The reason Trump is hated and feared by his compatriots is that he exposes them for who they really are; the do-gooder image of Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, George Soros, Pierre Omidyar, the Koch Brothers and other self-centered greedy billionaire oligarchs who present themselves as “philanthropic concerned citizens” suffers greatly once the Wizard of Oz cover has been stripped off. “Billionaires with hearts of gold” – what a load of bullshit; you don’t acquire billions without stomping all over people. Millions, maybe – but billions, that’s just monopolistic acquisitive obsessive behavior. Any rational government would slap them with an 90% tax rate; that’s what they fear most.
This is what the tax rate for the billionaires used to be:
THE TRUTH ABOUT TAXES: History Suggests High Tax Rates On Rich People Do Not Hurt The Economy, Business Insider, 2012
Not that Trump supports that! Trump supporters are kind of sad, in that they don’t seem to recognize this basic fact: Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are members of the same aristocratic elitist clan that has done so much damage to the American middle class over the past few decades:
http://www.mintpressnews.com/trump-clinton-refuse-explain-share-address-delaware/215907/
The number one agenda of the American oligarchs (who are much like the Russian oligarchs of the Yeltsin 1990s in Russia) is to defuse populist anger at the gross wealth inequality they’ve created in the United States with the aid of the Clintons and the Bushs; a Trump presidency would have the opposite effect. And if you don’t believe this is true, why not ask all the “liberal Democratic billionaires” and the “conservative Republican billionaires” – Buffet/Soros/Omidyar/Saban etc., as well as Koch/Thiel/Scaife/Friess etc., what they think about being shoved into a 90% tax bracket.
I don’t know, maybe we can get some billionaire-financed Brazilian media outlet to write about the American oligarchs and their control over the Democratic and Republican parties, and how Trump is screwing it all up for them.
“she was saying that privately, she is just as self-centered and greedy and contemptuous of average people as Trump is (not that she hides it very well), but for her public image, she has an army of makeup artists and pet reporters and “surrogates” who work overtime to present an image of normal decent person.”
Any murderous psychopath worth her/his salt has learned how to mask the antisocial “idiosyncrasies” of her/his psychopathy, until the situation allows them to emerge in a manner least liable to endanger the perpetrating individual. And Hillary’s worth a mountain.
Trump is an American patriot whose message of America first is totally opposed by the zionists who control Obomba,Arnold,Rice,Bushes,McCain,Ryan,HRC and just about every other toad in our national government.
He wants to fire all these scumbags neolibcon criminals who are instigating terror all over our world.A bipartisan quisling clinic of zionist first jerkweeds.
Domestically he wants secure borders, filtered legal immigration, the return of US manufacturing prowess, sound monetary principles, and a return to our Constitutional normality, totally rejected by idiot shrub, and the alleged scholar Obomba.
If one loves his country, what’s not to like?
All negative descriptions(there are no positives given) of Trump
are from serial lying criminals that almost everyone here knows as such, but for the obvious Zionists CS,or Mani,or Nate,so I scratch my head over the absolute gullibility shown here in echoes of that MSM calumny.Or is it just ideology? Or gender nonsense?
Know a man by his enemies, and his enemies are yours.
Will he bring US nirvana?I doubt that, but anything’s better than our present of neolibcon shite.
Trump for POTUS.
TI publication, most of your articles are becoming hack pieces for Hillary. Your talented young journalists, Lee Fang, Jon Schwarz, Glenn Greenwald, Jeremy Scahill, Cora Currier, etc. would do well and be wise to look askance at where The Intercept is headed. A billion dollars is a terrible thing to waste and end up in a dead end cul-de-sac.
Obviously it’s the owner of the Intercept, Pierre Omidyar, who is controlling the narrative here – so why doesn’t he just come out of the shadows and write an op-ed piece detailing his agenda and politics, instead of using the Intercept as cover? That would be a Trump-like move, hang it all out in the open and let people judge it for what it is, instead of this “third-party credibility” front-group approach to manipulating public opinion.
I return to TI every now and then to see whether it is still on a downhill slide to mediocrity and shilldom. Regrettably this article shows that this is the case.
Come on TI, don’t drink the “Two-Party System” koolaid (Glenn Greenwald being the exception seeing as he’s been defending third parties on Twitter). You need to report on the fact that two of our country’s four national candidates for President have been excluded from our country’s national debates on bogus and arbitrary grounds.
http://www.democracynow.org/2016/10/10/expanding_the_debate_jill_stein_debates
i would like to add BERNIE to that list of the expunged. he probably could kick all of their ass’s combined.
It is outrageous for anyone, much less a national level political figure, to casually brag about sexual assault.
Further, it is insulting to assert that such talk is usual among men …. it is not.
People are right to be angry and frustrated with our out-of-touch political establishment, but Mr. Trump is simply not the answer to this problem.
Actually it is, especially among jocks. People really hate to deal with the truth which is why religion is so successful at the denial of death and we are doing really nothing about the existential crisis of climate change and have done nothing of significance about the greatest short term threat to life on the planet, nuclear weapons. Like how many years did we cover up pervert priests and coaches etc. We are not a very nice species and our leaders are mostly sociopaths as are the current candidates of the corporate duopoly party.
It is interesting that Hillary brags about, or admits to playing a significant role in, raping entire populations (Syria, etc), and further talks about becoming even more violent in the rape of Syria because the US hasn’t achieved the orgasm it dreams of, but that is seen as not just OK, but admirable.
Did we even watch the same debate???
Well, these are the two candidates that the corporate/state run media pushed on to the American people. They ran with Trump as soon as they realized that their ratings exploded with him at the forefront. Bernie Sanders was ignored until it was no longer possible to keep him out of the conversation. Jill Stein coverage was basically nonexistent.
You are an ignorant Dem hack – Trump knocked it out of the park last night. I can barely wipe the silly smile off my face. And YOU think he self destructed?? BWAHAHAHAA that’s really rich! IDIOT!
you are vile and violent as your name “RUTHLESS” suggest “and a rapist” although somewhere in your soul there might part of a good person. BWAHAHAHAHAA.
“The Deplorables, Episode 2.” And one would have wanted to watch this, why, exactly?
An increasingly large number of Americans are so ticked off at the somewhat corrupt political and big business system that they will vote Trump the rebel just to register their anger. And if that number continues to increase, he will win.
Like a brick thru a window.
Like a mad dog off his leash.
The vengeance of mainstreet.
Take that! Ya blankfein!
Debate Recap: Donald Trump Lets Half-Sentence Hillary Clinton Self Destruct
Hellary..
“wants a supreme court judge that understands THE WORLD… “
keyword = THE WORLD?
not the US, but the TPP WORLD… = larger rakes and takes for Clinton Global Incentive
“wants a supreme court judge that doesnt ALWAYS SIDE WITH CORPORATIONS…”
keywords = DOESNT ALWAYS?
but does when it counts for her donors to return the favors!
Hillary would appoint the TPP, interest carry over, clinton global corporat agenda supreme court to “do her best to make wallstreet profitable” (finish sentence) so they can rob everyone like they rob Americans.
Hillary’s unpublished scotus picks –
>Sidney Blumenthal, proxy for Bebe Nuttinyahu
>Ken Salazar, oil crazy person
>Lloyd Blankfein, wallstreet enforcer & corporat interest defender
>James Comey, top banking and wallstreet defender
>And whoever her carried interest warmonger defence donors want.
yep! There she goes again. That’s what you get with HALF SENTENCE HILLARY.
You are as always spot on.
This is a very good summary of the debate. I listened carefully and couldn’t find much the two candidates actually disagreed on.
Mrs. Clinton criticized Mr. Trump’s locker room talk, but that was more about style than substance. Until Mrs. Clinton releases the full transcripts of her own locker room talk, I don’t think it’s possible to draw conclusions.
Mr. Trump did state he would jail his opponent if he became President. This was a blatant ploy for votes, but unfortunately the moderator, after asking the audience to restrain their applause, inexplicably failed to follow up with Mrs. Clinton and ask her if she would jail her opponent if she were elected. So it is impossible to draw any distinctions on this point either.
They both agreed that Obamacare doesn’t work, demonstrating they have at least a toehold in reality. They both also stated they intend to defeat ISIS, although neither had an actual plan.
There were some minor areas of disagreement. Mr. Trump stated he wants to build safe zones in America, while Mrs. Clinton wants to build them in Syria. But this is a question of priorities rather than a fundamental area of disagreement.
Mrs. Clinton claimed she voted against corporate tax loopholes as a Senator. However, a few breaths later she stated that people like Mr. Trump pay zero in taxes. So her crusade against tax loopholes appears to have been a failure. Mr. Trump stated he would close tax loopholes if elected, but Mrs. Clinton disagreed. So that does present a degree of choice; someone who failed in the past vs. someone who will fail in the future.
The failure to reveal a substantive difference between the two candidates could not have been the fault of the questioners, who asked the tough question we were all waiting form “do you believe you can be a devoted president to all the people in the United States”. However, neither of the candidates fell into the trap, and both answered yes.
Finally, the candidates were asked to say something nice about each other. This brought tears to my eyes, as it made me realize how lucky America is to have two such wonderful candidates.
So while I didn’t learn anything, I no differences between the two candidates were revealed, watching the debate was definitely time well spent.
great point – Mrs. Clinton criticized Mr. Trump’s locker room talk, but that was more about style than substance.
almost – they both also stated they intend to defeat ISIS, although neither had an actual plan.
DT has stated thruout his cpgn that he would take their oil, cut off their revenue source
uhuh – safe zones, i believe Trump opposes the no-fly zone.
nah – tax breaks, DT was successful in the past and would not fail in the future b/c DT is clever enuf to give breaks to corporations to spend spend spend
tears, grab a hankie. or a towel. There are 2 other candidates. vote your conscience. Hellary failed again here b/c she gave DT modest praise for 10 seconds then spent another minute taking it back. DT DIDN’T DO THAT.
Trump crushed her.
From transcript of the debate:
safe zone is way diff than a NFZ. A safe zone would be a quarantined area that US and Russia (and assad?) agree where people would live without having to flee, a re-settlement area. NFZ is simply a dog fight zone while everything on the ground burns to hell, in my opinion.
He also won the nice thing to say segment, when she said his family was nice(generic comment),but he called her a fighter,a nice touch.
I just hope people see the absolute necessity of getting rid of these crazy monsters for whom war, death and hatred are good endeavors, and this total career screwup HRC, their chosen agent.
Enough of this crap.
They disagreed on Syria, taxes, healthcare, Russia, Supreme Court justices, ISIS strategy, immigration, refugees, and treatment of Muslims. They also differed on temperament and poise.
Basically every issue. Your claim of agreement on Obamacare is false. Hillary wants to fix the cost component and maintain the mandate and the benefits associated with it. Trump wants the boilerplate “repeal and replace with something else.”
You clearly weren’t listening closely.
The evil shecreep is going to lose the black vote dissing their heroes crummy ACA,which she of course supported.
And this writer is obviously just another propagandist,as the world saw her ass being exposed as the pos she is.
Jail her,and Obomba, and put the MSM(and their assorted stealth web sites) on trial for serial lying.
The paybacks gonna be a bitch.
America First,Trump for POTUS.
Everybody sees what they wish to see.
Syria: both agree ISIS should be defeated:
Taxes: both say they will close loopholes (neither will).
Healthcare: both say they want something better than Obamacare (they won’t get it).
Russia: both will upgrade the US nuclear arsenal. Clinton talks tougher, actual policies will be similar.
Supreme Court justices: both said they would appoint a ninth judge.
Immigration, refugees, and treatment of Muslims: Trump talks tougher, actual policies will be similar.
So it all comes down to probably nominating a different candidate as the new Supreme Court Justice. This is an important difference to be sure, but I think their vast common areas of agreement should also be acknowledged.
What politician doesn’t want to see ISIS defeated!?
You refer to a single deduction – carried interest. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2016/10/10/the-one-tax-break-that-hillary-clinton-and-donald-trump-agree-on/
They differ on estate taxes and corporate taxes to name a couple.
You are not not judging Trump’s views and “policy” positions but your interpretations of their chances of being implemented.
I already explained the differences on Obamacare and the nuclear arsenal is at best a single subset of Russian relations.
Sometimes you have to judge a candidate not just by what they say, but by what they do. Many candidates have a public policy position and a private one*. You can discern their private position by observing what they do, or if you don’t have the time to observe but can afford to ante up, pay the candidate to reveal them. You can thank me for saving you $250,000.00.
(* full disclosure: some people dismiss this as a conspiracy theory, although Lincoln believed it).
Your argument is crumbling.
Not at all. My argument was that although there is a large gulf in personal style, the policy differences between Trump and Clinton are relatively minor, and that where they exist, they are generally a difference of tone or posturing for public consumption, rather than of substance.
You can test this by not watching the news for the next 12 months. Then have someone prepare a list of the 12 most significant actions of the executive branch. If from this list you can deduce which candidate was elected, then I will acknowledge I lost the argument.
And my argument is that the policy similarities you have highlighted are minor when compared to the overarching issues. Here’s a good reference point to start.
http://presidential-candidates.insidegov.com/compare/40-70/Hillary-Clinton-vs-Donald-Trump
https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/politics/political-issues/
Let’s pretend I did that and within the first week of the presidency, I see that there are 25 or so Executive Orders and efforts to begin rescinding Obama’s EOs. Hmmm…I wonder who is in power!?
The more counterfactual this argument becomes, the more you can make up stuff! I’ll play along: It will be obvious that Trump became President when he installs the Casino lights and faux-gold siding on the White House in his first week in the office.
You got me going. Is this your satirical self or the realist?
Watching the news for the last 12 months sure implies their policies are not the same.
The next 12 will only be interesting if he wins,as otherwise the squirrel cage continues.
Nate:
“What politician doesn’t want to see ISIS defeated!?”
Well, for starters, David Petraeus is saying we should ally with Al-Quaida to fight IS. We’ve got plenty of pundits from various mainstream and influential (such as the fly-by-night outfit known as Bellingcat) that consider Assad to be a bigger threat than Al-Quaida or IS. (Some are even praising the “accidental” strike by the US on the Syrian army (which helped IS gain ground in a battle), blaming most of the casualties on Syria!)
Hillary unwaveringly supported the Iraq war which gave birth to ISIS. She then went out of her way to clear a training and recruitment ground for ISIS in Libya, and she’s been selling the Saudis all the weapons ISIS ever needed, while threatening to go to war with nation most actively involved in bombing ISIS. Besides, how else could she maintain the strangling US internal surveillance and repression yoke on the American public, which she is determined to do, no doubt after attempting to drone Snowden in Russia, without ISIS…
The whole world(outside US) knows IsUS is US,but propagandists like Nate.
Of course he knows it too,but whats a little lie for Israel?
“What politician doesn’t want to see ISIS defeated!?”
Gary Johnson?
Wrong. Gary Johnson wants ISIS to be defeated, but he just doesn’t want the U.S. to be the one doing it. He wants diplomacy with Russia. Interestingly, he recognizes that we created the conditions for the Islamic State to thrive. As Colin Powell says, if you break it, you own it.
Also, the plight of Syria and Iraq clearly aren’t very high on his mind as his Aleppo gaffe demonstrated.
to nate and ben muss… they will both tow the line of WALL STREET AND THE MIC establishment, put more advisers in the MID. EAST, keep bombing, and telling us lies. the washington industrial establishment has a way of beating every president DOWN no matter their good intentions. we need a redress of grievances.
why is no one playing up possibly The Most Important aspect of this election and only briefly mentioned in the debate: Supreme Court appointments?
if you want a Supreme court that believes its duty is to uphold the US Constitution, then you definitely do NOT want to let HRC in the Oval Office!
Actually, if you want that, you don’t want either of these despicables (following Hillary’s example, I’m on a roll turning adjectives into nouns).
Anyway, the composition of the Senate makes more difference in determining the quality of Supreme Court appointments than does the identity of the occupant of the Oval Office. Presidents can only successfully nominate candidates who will be confirmed.
Note the current continuing vacancy.
The vacancy is because Obomba nominated another Jew on a court with 3 already.Who do they think they are, kings of the world?
And the little dweeb Garland is a insecurity maven, out to take our deplorable voice away.
Go away, antisemitic cretin.
The truth is antisemitic.
Is Garland a Jew,are there 3 already on the court, and is he a security type?Affirmative.
You might continue the roll, perhaps decrying despicablism as an ideology, and the despicabilist tendencies we see arising so often…
Dan: I don’t think the evidence (scant, so far, of course) supports the notion that Drumpfuck self-destructed.
From The Hill</em
What would you guess is the typical margin of error for overnight polls?
Also, quick scans of online media — including the ones we don’t like ;^( — suggests that there are substantial numbers of Our Fellow Americans who think Donald’s performance was stellar.
Of course, at least as many believe that $hillary showed that she is the obvious choice to lead this great nation and that anyone who doubts it is a despicable jerk and probably a supporter of the vulgarian.
I need better drugs.
Perhaps Mr. Froomkin is trying to make the aforementioned list.
That nonsense was unwatchable
What’s so outrageous about threatening to imprison a criminal? That said criminal happens to be Hillary or Bill Clinton? HEL-lo! War crimes? Libya (overthrow and murder of its leader)? Syria (attempted overthrow and the arming of terrorists)? Honduras (overthrow of its legitimately elected government)? Saudi Arabia (funding and arming them in their war on Yemen)? Since when it is considered outrageous to suggest that a criminal should be put in jail?
There are plenty of things Drumpf says that are truly asinine and disgusting, but saying he would put a criminal in jail isn’t one of them.
Because the left have told us repeatedly claimed character doesn’t matter (Bill Clinton).
Until now (Donald Trump).
Funny, that.
Hmmm … thought I edited out “told us” … apparently not. :)
When Gerald Ford pardoned Richard Nixon, signalling to the world that American conservatives were immune from the law, I’m SURE that you objected.
Pardoning RN was the alternative to having the national government (already in turmoil) be tied up for months by trial of a government official already out of office and replaced by another.
If you believe Ford should not have aborted that process, you’re entitled to your opinion. I don’t recall I ever expressed a decided opinion, one way or the other, then or now. It was a tough call, either way.
But if I did express an opinion, yes, it would likely have differed from yours, although not for what you apparently believe to be the only possible reason.
Moreover, if pardoning Marc Rich (whose wife was a Clinton mega-donor) sets a high standard for exonerating the shamelessly guilty, I’m certain you can explain precisely how, without resorting to weasel words.
BTW, it does not logically follow from my conclusion that many leftists are mentally damaged persons that I therefore must be a “conservative”. That conclusion plainly evidences the extent of damage of any connection to a liberal mindset.
I tend to agree with Mencken that elections are advance auctions of stolen goods. I therefore refuse to undersign political philosophies which disagree only about which rent-seekers are more entitled to proceeds of the hijackings. After deduction of healthy “service fees”, of course.
The aim should be to eliminate all rent-seeking, whether internal or external to government. That would virtually eliminate the power base for “parties”, which are no more than organized crime mobs profiting from operation of their “government” rackets.
Elections are designed to assure “hope and change” can never happen, regardless of the outcome. That is their purpose. So vote early and vote often.
I was only an infant when that all went down, but I can tell you that I see Ford’s pardoning of Nixon as a very public repudiation of the rule of law.
Giving up the office of the POTUS is definitely not immunity from the law,and if you were a citizen as I was,(Who voted for McGovern-my first election)the whole thing seemed a tempest in a teapot, where a vindictive media piled on and had him leave office, over a bunch of clowns screwing the pooch, after winning the election by such a large
margin that the whole thing seemed a ludicrous exercise in the power of the MSM to sway the easily manipulated.
And his stupid crime was minor to the shite they let pass today, where the Constitution is trod over regularly, but as its all for zion, its fine.
And people on the left and right look at his POTUS much better than recent scum.
The so-called Democratic Party does not constitute the Left in this country, not since the 1990’s. The actual Left is the Green Party and the smaller socialist parties.
All parties have only the single objective of gaining power over others. They are therefore only different flavors of the same poison. The level of dosage administered doesn’t matter because it’s cumulative. Eventually it kills.
These smaller parties are often sound in their many criticisms of the corrupt, rent-seeking behavior of government controlled by major parties of today.
But if they gained significant power tomorrow, they would quickly become no less corrupt and self-dealing than any others.
Power corrupts. Always. All attempts to eliminate corruption by power while maintaining the power available to government is perpetually doomed to failure.
Amen! And I am pretty sure RobotHillBot was the one self-destructing. Apparently its programmers have it say “Go to HillaryClinton.com” when the wires start frying.
It is not outrageous to imprison a criminal. It is outrageous to sic an extra, special prosecutor on a person, who in that scenario would be a private citizen, based on their political beliefs and associations!!!!!
Let’s be clear though: this stuff is not “Trump”, this is the fundamental rotten essence of the Republican Party dating all the way back to when it was founded by Joe McCarthy and Richard Nixon. This is the House Un-American Activities Committee all over again. This is Watergate all over again. Only this time, the criminals breaking into the DNC weren’t caught, but are celebrated as if they were heroes. The special prosecutors are in the bloodline that threatened to lock up Juanita Broaddrick because she filed an affidavit saying she wasn’t raped, then offered her amnesty from any perjury charges if she’d say she was … provided she never changed that position again. Pecadilloes like following George Bush’s practice of keeping emails away from public accountability are treated like high crimes. There is never any willingness to accept a “not guilty”; whenever such a technical obstacle is encountered, the response is simply to try again!
If people vote in Donald Trump, I say we need to forever strike George Washington from America’s mythic tradition, and celebrate Joe McCarthy’s Birthday instead – the quintessential American – the ruler over the rulers.
Didn’t Donald say often that he would audit the federal reserve? Many times? That he would audit the federal reserve? That’s pretty huge if he would and i believe he would and auditing the federal reserve – the cash print mechanism that most countries own themselves which we do not – that act of auditing the federal reserver itself would literally be worth it’s weight in gold and i wouldn’t miss it for all the gold in fort knox.
The above is a comment made by a Drumpfian, in the immediate aftermath of the ‘show’. Not sure what Megyn Kelly had anything to do with it but comments like that are absolutely galore in the blogosphere of the Reichwing/Cons/alt-right right now. Very similar stuff about Martha ‘Ratshit’ too…
Quite telling, I think…
I can’t blame Trump for things other people say. He’s birthed enough little turds of his own I see no need for imports.
Go away you anti-teutonic cretin.
The Atlantic makes the same point about abuse of executive power to put opponents in jail here: http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2016/10/trump-constitution/503540/ As you might expect, they say it much better. (Actually, I can’t think of any publication that is so consistently well-written as theirs)
Clinton was not a private citizen when she committed those war crimes. She was acting in her official capacity as U.S. Secretary of State, and prior to that, as a U.S. senator, she voted to authorize Bush’s Iraq war and fund said war with no strings attached. Since when is it a crime to expose crimes? You write as though people disclosing evidence of actual crimes is the same thing as Nixon’s goons breaking into the Watergate hotel to dig up dirt on a political opponent. It’s not. You know this for a fact.
I for one am voting for Jill Stein and Ajamu Baraka, the only sane, reasonable, moral choice. If you want to reward criminal politicians, that’s your fault and your problem. But don’t you dare pretend you’re doing anything other than enthusiastically throwing your support behind fascists like Clinton and Drumpf.
If any “crimes” were exposed in the DNC hack, I have yet to hear of them. The Watergate parallel seems spot-on to me.
There’s nothing wrong with prosecuting someone if you have sufficient evidence. The US court system, however, is too dishonest or incompetent to try anyone at the Presidential level. I suggest a World Court…held in the Middle East, Asia, or Latin America, because NATO countries are also too corrupt to be trusted to hold a fair trial.
nothing at all
both of them
of course
yes she did
yes she did
yes she did
yes she did
since if perhaps you head the f…b…i… otherwise not so outrageous
Indeed. One need only note how the media (and the US and EU) are quick to dismiss the elected government of Georgia, who were elected on a platform of fighting corruption, and set about prosecuting a number of criminals in the previous government. The aforementioned government was returned to power, while the corrupt prior party got under thirty percent. (Sadly, a lot of the corrupt people have fled to the US (who won’t extradite them), EU (ditto) or Ukraine (who installed some of them in government, including fraudster, torturer, and tie-eater Mikhail Saakashvili).
Bring the special prosecutor back. Put the past administrations under scrutiny- especially for deleting required information (be they Clinton emails or Bush emails), or waging war (Kosovo, Iraq and Libya were all based on lies). Build executive and legislative wings at ADMAX Florence (for men) and FMC Carswell for women. Let justice be done, though the heavens fall. Take them down hard.
also bushya and cheney – what they did was hitlerian
I agree. She should be in jail not the WH. I hold her personally responsible for the deaths of Chris Stevens and staff. I recall how she and Obama used to quibble as to who was more qualified to answer the 3 a.m. phone call. Neither of them, apparently. When it came, they bungled through it. They did know, however, that they didn’t want to offend the Libyan government. Saving face, apparently, was more important than saving lives. And then we have Susan Rice. Why was she — not the secretary of state or the president — sent to the Sunday morning talk shows to try to diffuse the situation? When someone later asked Clinton about it, she said she doesn’t “like” to appear on the Sunday morning talk shows. I thought, well, you b—- that’s part of your job. And this woman wants to be our foreign policy guru.
That cockamamie Benghazi “controversy” is another perfect example of Republicans at work. The U.S. got attacked by terrorists, yes. Based on the knowledge there would be a nominally peaceful demonstration about Korans they failed to predict an armed squad with heavy weapons. Blaming them for failing to see this in advance is ridiculous — it obviously wasn’t deliberate, and it just goes to show the terrorists land a punch now and then. The question is, do our people have to listen to the goon squad glorifying the terrorists’ action like it was the be-all and end-all of the entire presidency, or do we say better luck next time? And LUCK is all it is – no way do I believe al Qaida couldn’t hit another embassy tomorrow if they feel like it – or the year (God forbid) after a Trump takeover. Embassies are not actually strong points capable of withstanding a literally unlimited amount of firepower; they are peaceful operations, hence vulnerable to terrorists.
One can’t but wonder how many email shots about “!!!!BENGHAZI!!!101!!!’ people like Mary Lou Simms must have received.
Perhaps she also believes the Clinton’s have two kids but not with each other?
Interesting perspective. No, embassies are not necessarily strong points, but they are walled compounds guarded by a marine contingent, something common to almost every US embassy compound around the world, but absent from Tripoli and the Benghazi mission where Stevens was under guard by a few contractors. That seems out of place, no? In peaceful Paris, the American embassy and ambassador are guarded by a significant number of marines but in civil war torn Libya, not so much. The main American diplomatic mission to Tripoli, Libya was situated in a hodge-podge of villas and hotel rooms with security provided by Libyan forces due to historical relations with Gaddafi and because a new walled American compound under construction was not complete when the Libyan civil war erupted. The Benghazi compound was even less secure. If you recall, the American diplomatic personnel suffered a pretty harrowing evacuation in Feb 2011 and returned only 7 months later to a war torn country. Given the unstable, highly fluid situation and absence of a secure American compound, the most prudent course of action would suggest a significant security presence for the American mission, or at the very least a rapid response force to evacuate them. There was neither despite formal and informal requests. There is absolutely no excuse for failing to provide the latter considering the situation and lessons of the 2011 evacuation one year earlier. Unfortunately, the Obama and Clinton State Dept. didn’t see it that way, preferring instead to peddle the false narrative that, “all is well,” and “we got this,” when in fact the country was highly unstable and dangerous. Whether it was hubris, purely incompetence or a desire to mislead about the failed policy in Libya that put the diplomatic mission at risk, we’ll never know for sure. Either way, both Obama and Clinton own the mistakes because it wasn’t just random bad luck.
Basically, LUCK had absolutely nothing to do with the attack on Benghazi. The diplomatic mission in Libya, and particularly Benghazi, was a perfect example of a “soft target” that exposed key personnel, and a favorite target of terrorists of all strains. The administration knew, or should have known, that this was the case because that is their job and they were already well aware from the CIA that al Qaeda was in country. Due to incompetence and/or policy, Obama and Clinton failed in their duty to protect their diplomatic personnel and then attempted to conceal their failure after the fact by redirecting blame to a movie and then as a “random event”. That is their guilt. From 2000 on, few US diplomatic personnel and no ambassadors were lost in attacks on fortified and secured US diplomatic missions. Clinton and Obama left Stevens swinging in the wind and he died, and they own it.
It’s really quite pathetic that the Dems refuse to acknowledge these facts, the media refuses to examine them, and the Reps continue to pursue some other conspiracy theory when the facts are right in front of them.
They are joke hearings because both are complicit in the Libyan disaster, and exposing one (Clinton)exposes the other(rethugs).
You say “they didn’t want to offend the Libyan government”? Uh, excuse me, Obama and Clinton overthrew the Libyan government and Clinton herself gloated on national television with her “we came, we saw, he died” comment in reference to the brutal torture, anal-rape-with-a-bayonet, and murder of Muammar Gaddafi by the very people Obama and Clinton armed and funded. Libya is now in a state of chaos with no end in sight.
“Libya is now in a state of chaos with no end in sight. ”
But at least, ISIS got a fertile new training and recruitment ground out of it, so we can rest easy…
