The U.S. military directly attacked Houthi rebels in Yemen for the first time on Wednesday — firing Tomahawk cruise missiles at three rebel-held radar stations on the Red Sea coast. The attack, which was in retaliation for a failed missile attack on a U.S. Navy destroyer on Sunday, risks drawing the U.S. further into the 18-month war.
In March 2015, a coalition of states led by Saudi Arabia began a U.S.-backed bombing campaign against the Houthi forces, which four months earlier had seized Yemen’s capital and deposed the country’s U.S.- and Saudi-backed dictator. Since then, the U.S. has flown refueling missions for Saudi aircraft, supplied targeting intelligence, and resupplied the Saudi effort with tens of billions of dollars of weapons.
While the U.S. has previously conducted direct attacks in Yemen against al Qaeda — which controls vast territory in central and eastern Yemen — it had not directly engaged Houthi forces before.
The escalation began last week when the U.S. dispatched warships to the Bab al-Mandab Strait — which connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden — after the Houthis fired on and nearly sank a ship from the United Arab Emirates. The UAE is a part of the Saudi-led bombing coalition, which has maintained a strict naval blockade of the country since the war began.
When the Houthis fired on the U.S.S. Mason earlier this week, sailors were able to deploy countermeasures and the ship was not damaged.
The Department of Defense issued a statement describing the U.S. attack as a series of “limited self-defense strikes,” but promised to “respond to any further threat” to U.S. ships “as appropriate.”
“The intent of our strikes were to deter future attacks and to reduce the risk to U.S. and other vessels,” White House Deputy Press Secretary Eric Schultz said Thursday. “We are prepared to respond if necessary to any future missile launches.”
The U.S. Navy tweeted a video of the destroyer U.S.S. Nitze launching cruise missiles, captioning it with the hashtag “#Yemen” — commonly used by activists to draw attention to the humanitarian catastrophe.

Schultz said the strike was approved by President Obama on the recommendation of the secretary of defense and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Pentagon officials told NPR that they had “no sense of any civilians being killed,” but it is unclear how they know, and what type of review was undertaken.
Houthi forces denied having launched the missiles at a U.S. destroyer, and promised to respond to kind to the display of military force.
The attack came just after the first sign that the Obama administration might be having second thoughts about the massacres committed by the Saudi coalition with U.S. weapons.
Just four days ago, the Saudi coalition bombed the funeral of a rebel-appointed government minister’s father, killing 125 and wounding 525 in one of the worst massacres of the war. Fragments of what appeared to be U.S.-made bombs were photographed at the scene.
The White House responded by promising to initiate a review of U.S. assistance to Saudi Arabia, and issued its first public threat to stop supporting the coalition. “U.S. security cooperation with Saudi Arabia is not a blank check,” Ned Price, spokesman for the White House National Security Council, said in a statement. Price added that the administration is “prepared to adjust our support so as to better align with U.S. principles, values and interests.”

Everything going on in North Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia can be attributed to the CFR and personal ties to the Clinton-Bush Klan.
Their ship is sinking… so, they intend to take the world down with them.
Well, of course. ISIS, al-Qaeda, the Houthis…all of them are being funded by the CFR. Right?
The only path to peace is to wipe the slate clean and start over with a one-state with equal rights for ALL, not the fake two-state “solution” that Zionists like Dershowitz, Netanyahu, Chomsky and Amy Goodman push – that’s just continued slow-motion genocide of Palestinians.
Chomsky is a Zionist?
This will get only worse with Hillary. Saudis must be cut off. Their reign and murders cannot be tolerated.
And I wonder why train driers keep committing homicide against 11-year-old boys and elderly couples in their home province. Oh wait, no I don’t. The nsa told them to murder those people. Wish I had some “physical evidence” of it so that people at hospitals could stop pretending they aren’t aware that the people were murdered or that I’m psychotic. It can’t be healthy for any of them and it isn’t like they enjoy doing it. I know what a false premise is.

An act of war without a declaration of war. This is unconstitutional and therefore illegal. Let us mind our own business and stay out of other nations fights
And the US wonders why it’s so hated.
Something that hasn’t gotten enough coverage (if any) is the propping up and financial and military backing by USG and their allies of very unpopular, corrupt and bloody governments in Ethiopia just because the @ssh0l3s are “their pigs” in the region (right in front of Yemen, in case there haven’t been enough wars for you to have learned that)

it would nicely if gringos were not so “God-blessingly” abusive. When Nazis were doing their “freedom-loving” they were not that bored to go bomb people who could not defend themselves on an equal basis in the most remote and poorest corners of the Earth to just have fun while playing what comes down to very one-sided computer games with them.
Gringos and their “powerful” allies (now including the Saudis) have already 8-timed the genocidal ratio of Nazis during WWII while their Nobel Prize, constitutional lawyer “Yes we can” President doesn’t waste a chance to start another abusive war.
Nazis went head on against Russia, Britain, France … right in Europe. How come gringos have such a hard time starting some WMD b#llsh!tting story when it comes to China and Russia? Aren’t they theworldsonlysuperpower? Isn’t Russian grabbing back Crimea and China claiming as their own the South China Sea believed to hold huge oil and gas reserves beneath its seabed enough (in case they needed a rationale)? They say they most be “responsible” (I am not being sarcastic, this is actually what they say!). OK, but explain then how “responsible” it is senselessly abusing people in order to feel “great”, “brave”, “free” … while “freedom-lovingly” having fun just killing people and irreparably messing with their lives.
Gringos would wholeheartedly if they cared. The thing is that they are careless about it to the point of those incidents not even being part of their reality to any extent. Their end of reality is:
Actually, sarcastically true! Unfortunately they don’t care to make the link between Geography, History, Humanity, morality, rationality …
I myself have had similar (and worst!) experiences and I know well of many other people with the same experiences. We have all come to the conclusion without reasonable doubt that those doing that are “Russian hackers paid by Putin”.

Ambrose Bierce said “War is God’s way of teaching Americans geography.” I, an ignorant American, can personally confirm that Mr. Bierce was correct. I now know that the Gulf of Tonkin is off the coast of Yemen.
Gulf of Tonkin all over again. US out of everywhere.
Let’s try isolationism for a while, repatriate corporation taxes owed, then work on new industries to slow climate change, cure cancer and other diseases, rebuild infrastructure and stop making wars that cause others to hate us. Too obvious I know, but let’s try.

“Army to Deploy 1st Infantry Division Soldiers to Iraq
The U.S. Army announced Friday it will deploy about 500 soldiers from the Big Red One to Iraq this fall.”

The identity of the high level illegal government official at this funeral helps explain why it was targeted and I would imagine there were many more Ansar Allah people present. I don’t think that people who take positions in an illegal unrecognized government during a war enjoy any special civilian protection, they are legitimate targets of the forces of the recognized state government.
The claim that Mansur Hadi, recognized as the leader of the Yemeni government by the UN, is a dictator just muddies the water and allows some people to try and portray Ansar Allah as a liberating force instead of the invading minority Islamist sect they are.
Hadi was installed by the U.S. and Saudi Arabia and the requirement was for him to serve two years and give up power. Guess what? He over stayed his welcome and became a dictator or a vassal client of the head choppers north of Yemen’s border. However, you should check the Geneva Conventions about bombing funerals regardless of who is in attendance; it is illegal and a war crime.
Over simplifying these conflicts does make it easier for the hand wringers and finger pointers to ply their trade. Hadi was already the VP in Yemen when he took over the presidency because Saleh was behaving like a dictator and trying to install his son as the new ruler. Saleh and his son along with their military are trying to regain power by force along with the Houthis.
If you want to depict Hadi as a dictator for extending his term you need to blame the Houthis for starting this war and blowing up the country which made it impossible for a normal transition of power to occur.
The Saudis are new to this intervention policy and have much to learn. They may be better off if they adopt the Assad/Putin tactic of just denying this kind of attacks ever happened and ignoring all the western hand wringing.
“Over simplifying these conflicts does make it easier for the hand wringers and finger pointers to ply their trade.”
That’s why you do it.
U.S. Enters Yemen War Directly (???) for the First Time With Attack on Houthis..
We have been using drones there the whole time. We killed United States citizens…Alwalki and his sixteen year old son on separate incidents – BOTH
U.S. Citizens. What new lies will we hear to cover the truth??
This is very true, the US has indeed been bombing Yemen with drones. Perhaps this ‘attack’ on the US destroyer (if it happened at all) is an attempted retaliation for Obama’s drone murders.
I believe The Intercept is merely referring to the current war against the Houthis. The US did fire cruise missiles into the country in 2009, and its current drone campaign began in 2010 (there was a drone strike in 2002, but that was the last one until 2010)
Again, the article is referring to the “Yemen War,” specifically. The US’s previous efforts were focused on AQAP, not the Houthis.
That is actually a great point. I think it was on Obama’s 3rd day in office when he launched those cruise missiles into a village in Yemen and wiped out 50 or so civilians. Nice guy that obama is.
Did I miss it in this report, because other sources state the US has no evidence the Houthis fired the missile.
No, Obama just woke up and decided for no reason he wanted to launch missiles on Houthis. Makes perfect sense right?
Thank gawd. I was afraid the Houthis would prevent me from going to church this weekend. Let freedom ring.
Does anyone think the Patriots can with this one?
“win” this one?
Trump for POTUS.
As only traitors and America haters could vote for the whore of Tel Aviv.
Jill Stein is much more worthy of concern troll support,as she actually seems sympathetic to the victims of neolibcon globalization, unlike the HB,who revels in calling victims deplorable.
What an evil twit, she attacks her own citizens welfare by calling for a boycott of NC.
I just don’t get it,why anyone would vote for such a corrupt bubbleheaded wacko moron with a track record of shite stretching 30 odd years. She is trying to steal the POTUS,with the help of criminal serial liars,as they screwed BS,and bobbleheads nod in approval.
Man o man.
Fascism, at its core, is an amorphous and incoherent ideology that perpetuates itself by celebrating a grotesque hypermasculinity, elements of which are captured in Trump’s misogyny. It allows disenfranchised people to feel a sense of power and to have their rage sanctified. It takes a politically marginalized and depoliticized population and mobilizes it around a utopian vision of moral renewal and vengeance and an anointed political savior. It is always militaristic, anti-intellectual and contemptuous of democracy and replaces culture with nationalist and patriotic kitsch. It sees those outside the closed circle of the nation-state or the ethnic or religious group as diseased enemies that must be physically purged to restore the health of nation.
What’s not to hate about you or anyone else who would vote for Trump or HRC — Trump’s grotesquely cynical promoter, as seen in recent Wikileaks.
Right now I am petrified that Hillary is almost totally dependent on Republicans nominating Trump….she has huge endemic political weaknesses that she would be wise to rectify…..even a clown like Ted Cruz would be an even money bet to beat and this scares the hell of out me…..

One could be forgiven for thinking the goal is to clear out the oil rich Arabian Peninsula bar a few sentinel countries. Access to resources would be a easier without the ‘pesky’ problem of human beings wanting what is their right: freedom, dignity and respect. Yemen might not have oil but it has a very long easily accessible coastline, wars have been fought for less.
In other words it IS about the OIL. Not one outlet in the MSM has the chutzpah to challenge the real reason why we have over 800 bases worldwide for Peace. We will get what we deserve at some point in time.
Sounds like someone in the Pentagon got some bad acid:
“Hey Man, let’s dust off the old Tonkin Gulf scam, it worked back in 1964 and no one important today remembers back that far”
“Far out Man….. That’s right, they fired on us first so now we have to start a war to protect Democracy. If Yemen falls all of it’s neighbors will fall like dominos”
I think we pulled the equivalant of the Tonkin gulf scam several times to destroy Yugoslavia . I’am beginning to think the whole Arab spring was another Tonkin gulf scam . for sure the liberation of Iraq, Libya and Syria is .
Read: Which Path to Persia- Brookings Institute The “Arab Spring” has PNAC written all over it. The Neo-Liberal Conservatives continue to modify but carry-on with this plan today.
“Remember the Maine”
Note that this article states that,
” the Houthis fired on the U.S.S. Mason earlier this week.”
Then, within a link using the word “denied” in a later paragraph
there is information which clearly shows that there is
NO PROOF that the Houthis fired at the ship.
The claim of “growing evidence” is now given as if that is proof while
the Houthis have steadfastly denied they fired at the ship AND
the locations which the U.S. chose to shoot back at are
NOT where the attack came from.
Also, isn’t it interesting that the area where the initial attack
(if indeed it was an attack) came from
is controlled by al Qaeda?
To recap,
The people who are fighting to restore the legitimate government in Yemen
are “rebels”
while groups from outside of Yemen who support an illegally
imposed predatory government are allied against them and
now one of the predatory outsiders is claiming to be a victim of aggression
by those they have designated as “rebels” and so the corrupt powerful
outsider who supports corrupt governments inside and outside of Yemen
has assaulted locations which were not the site of its
supposed victimization.
I suppose the next step will be a lousy claim that the Houthis have
Weapons of Mass Destruction that they got from Saddam Hussein
or some other such crap.
As far as I can tell, the Houthis are the only people who might be
anywhere near the truth.
Good analysis. I think you’re right and America is headed into another flailing war along the path of her decline from empire.
I gotta agree with Crazy Liberal below.
The idea that this incident is just a coincidence following the bad press for the Saudis reeks to high heaven.
The attack on Syrian military forces right after the truce agreement seems awfully similar.
Geeze; what would happen if Trump won and pulled the troops back home? Sure wouldn’t be good for the US contractors making death machines. The American people are so stoopid, they think a tax cut for corporations from 35% to 15% would be a cut; duuuh, it would be a raise from the zero the large ones pay now. Hell, the NYT who outed Trump non tax paying made 30M last year and paid……negative 3.6M. That means they got 3.6 M from you, sucker. Trump is a scum bag..duuuh; what was Bush II, Slick Willie; in fact, other than Nixon who was screwed up by his cold Quaker parents, every POTUS in modern history has screwed around; have you forgotten JFK; even Saint MLK was a philanderer; Jesse Jackson and on and on. What hypocrisy; breathtaking hypocrisy. Blood and guts Lady MacHillary as POTUS, lord help us, no, lore help them.
JJ;Craig Murray had a report that when he visited the
Ivory Coast?,Jackson screamed at his liaison that their were no reporters at the airport for PR purposes.Murray said there is no press at all there to report Jesse’s magnificent magisterial entrance.
Al Sharptons role model.
You’re a misguided fool if you believe the American people are stupid. Most see through all the bs coming from all fronts.
The Nobel Peace Prize is working on his legacy of peace.
“Price added that the administration is “prepared to adjust our support so as to better align with U.S. principles, values and interests.”
Translation: We value the principle that Wall Street deserves massive interest on its investments.
The US attacked based on information and urging of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. It was created by and for Netanyahu and AIPAC. More and more often, US policy has come to follow disinformation by the hawkish element in Israel.
We are now doing the work of the Israeli government and enforcing their policies protecting their country and using our arms and money even though all these countries we are attacking are thousands of miles from our shores.
Are these actions dedicated to doing what is best for the US, or are we subject to following another nations interests and footing the bill (in money and men’s lives) for that nation?
Reality is not permitted in civilized discussion.Shhhh…..
Surely, these missiles had ‘Vote Hillary’ on them.
Surely, Americans care only about themselves. Look at you and Rachel Maddow.
Our foreign policy, particularly with regard to military intervention, reflects maturity and restraint of the preschool playground. Perhaps shooting back might be justified if harm was done, but by all accounts the missile fired did not hit anything, caused no casualties or damage. So why not just issue a statement warning them of the implications of future actions, and let it go at that? The answer seems to be that since we are in a political campaign (aren’t we always?) the Administration needs to respond in the most belligerent possible manner, lest the even more bellicose opposition take political advantage. Always working at the lowest, crudest possible level, we are. And despite the fact that Obama does just what Trump would do, his supporters continue to decry Trump as a warmonger. Talk about pots calling kettles black!
People of my generation recall the so-called Gulf of Tonkin Incident, an encounter between a US destroyer and a North Vietnamese patrol boat, which was used by Lyndon Johnson to increase US involvement in Vietnam a hundredfold. Could this be the start of a similar slide into war?
There are a few cases where we have not used force, like in South Korea, where North Korea has (allegedly) been aggressive. Plus there’s the Mavi Marmara incident (Let’s face it- how many other nations could take a former ambassador, a former congresswoman and a decorated veteran prisoner on the high seas and not get punished?).
We have armed forces and warships off their shores halfway around the world from our shores and they fire a missile at us? What would we do to No. Korean or Iranian ships and airplanes who were cruising up and down our shores? I guess this fits the maxim of Might makes right. Yet we still mouth the false platitude of right makes might.
We correctly retaliated against Al Qaeda for their attacks on NY and DC but incorrectly have an undeclared war against terrorism which has no country nor government when we could have made it a crime and had the Islamic world behind us supporting an attack on criminals. Now we are engaged in a never ending war on a concept of terrorism which has had bad actors for hundreds of years.
Machiavellian policies are followed that states that a prince (government) must create enemies in the people’s eyes to create unity among its citizens in order to justify amassing more wealth and power unto itself.
Anyone – and I mean anyone – has the right to be in international waters. So I do not entirely buy the idea that our very presence off the coast of Yemen constitutes a provocation, so long as we stay in international waters. It would be interesting to know what kind of antiship missiles were fired at the US ship, because that would tell us something about whether we were indeed in international waters.
I absolutely agree with your statement about Al Quaeda, that we should have approached the attacks as criminal activities rather than instigating a military response. There is plenty of evidence that the neocons were eager to institute a program of regime change in the Middle East, and the attacks in September 2001 gave them a perfect excuse. The neolibs who followed them are equally culpable, having lacked either the intelligence or moral courage, or both, to change course in 2008. And we see ample evidence that neither of the Party’s candidates intend to challenge the status quo.
Please don’t insult pre-schoolers. They are much more generous, kind and loving than anyone in our government. I worked with them.
Then again, we will “elect” the worst of two very bad non-choices for POTUS, and pay the price. Time to boycott the rigged everything. Including the corporation spying on us. It is so silly, the most important factor of their information grabbing isn’t available to them, because of IRS privacy law. Which is, that I don’t have any money to buy their crap. Hilarious.
“When the Houthis fired on the U.S.S. Mason earlier this week”. according to the same honest folks who “inform” us on the violence in syria and ukraine. and tell us the houthis are “iranian proxies”. they’ve also provided the saudis refueling service several thousand times and the sold them bombs they’ve been dropping. also this new thing called a “naval blockade”. the US has been involved in this from the jump.
Had we not backed the Saudis (and continue to back them), this would not have happened.
Ah yes, the USA attacking another oppressed population this time trying to free themselves from Saudi dictatorship. Doesn’t it make you proud to be American? Knowing your country uses its warships to do the bidding of the Saudis? The world leader in chopping off heads of men, women, and even children for offenses such as apostasy, stealing, adultery (gasp!), and leaving one’s husband? Not to mention they still have an active slave trade there. Oh–and women cannot drive cars or leave their homes without a male relative escorting them. I’m sure glad USA is spending millions helping out these human rights champions. LOL!
Someone needs to target the Saudis with a BDS movement. Israel is bad, but Saudis are far, far, worse.
Please, the Saudis are pikers compared to Israel, and whatever the Saudis do,they do at the blessing and permission of zion,or it wouldn’t happen.
The collusion with zion is totally transparent, but not reportable,as it would reveal the linkage of 9-11,and the ziomedias total protection racket of them.
The Saudis have the oil and the 51st state of Murika along with AIPAC sets out the hog trough of money for our Legislative people to wallow in. If one has no morals and ethics with regards to american hegemony, it all falls into place.
Anybody knows what exactly US destroyers are doing in Yemen?
They’ve gotta keep something nearby to make it easier to provoke conflict with Houthis and eventually Iran. Destroyers are convenient targets.
Destroying
Two things: working alongside the warships of many other nations trying to combat piracy on the horn of Africa; and providing a military presence along the critical sea lanes out of the Persian Gulf from which much of our oil imports originate.
Look at a map, sometime.
I see. Tomahawk cruise missiles to take on the African pirates. Well done!
Do tell: fighting Al Qaeda is not mentioned much these days. Why is that? No more Al Qaeda?
They aren’t mentioned in Syria much either, but we are fighting on behalf of them there. They’ve been rebranded as “moderate rebels” and we get upset with Russia and Assad attack them.
You may want to check out the naval blockade on Yemen as the more relevant reason.
The map says all these nations are sovereign, and we are 10,000 miles away.
No one is denying the free flow of energy supply,so its all horseshite.
small correction: “Houthi forces denied having launched the missiles at a U.S. destroyer, and promised to respond to kind to the display of military force.” should probably read “and promised to respond in kind to the display of military force.”
Can you say Gulf Of Tonkin? (Feel free to correct my spelling, I think it happened the year I was born.
THIS IS A NIGHTMARE! That is, of course, unless you work for a merchant of death. Excuse me, “defense contractor”.
What young people fail to realize is that if Hellary were to be elected, there will no longer be a United States!
We will have an immediate Civil/Revolutionary war!
The east and west coast brain dead democratic zombie Borg may be in control of the populated areas. In the rest of the country, American Freedom Fighters, will glorify the flag, with their resistance.
Actual alive free thinking Americans in Fly-Over Country, will be in open revolt against an enemy of the constitution and free elections.
We will secede from the non-existant union. Russia will help us.
We will make America Great Again! See you zombies on the Field.
Come on man!! I hate Hillary just as much a won’t vote for her no matter what, but let’s be a little realistic here. The idiotic rants are what give them the opportunity to not discuss actual issues.
If the total corrupt fixed election doesn’t make one incensed to the point of rage, one is comatose .
Good, hopefully for their sake they learned their lesson. They will think twice now about escalating by firing on US ships.
If you would bother to click on the word “denied” which
is highlighted in blue, you can see that the US decided to fire
at Houthi-held positions which are NOT where the initial missiles
came from.
The Houthis are denying they had anything to do with the initial attack,
but the Saudi-allied US is determined to put the blame on the Houthis
even though they can only claim (as is typical of the devious US
warmongers) that they have “growing evidence.”
Does a decent nation attack sites which were not where the
original attack came from based upon purported “growing evidence?”
No, the faking U$A is again up to no good.
I assume it wasn’t a top down order but some rebel on his own accord who decided to launch the missiles. I imagine the rebel leaders will tell their troops that they better not do it again.
Nice effective use of force from Obama.
Your imaginings are right out of the pentagon’s playbook.
The truth is always problematic and must be resisted and
ignored in the name of free market (NOT) capitalist global domination.
Are you a troll, or are you really that stupid? You’re glad the USA is using its navy to prop up the world leading head chopper kingdom of Saudi Arabia? A country so backwards and oppressive that they chop people’s heads off for not believing in ‘allah’? I think your problem is you have a very superficial, childlike understanding of what’s happening in Yemen. The Houthis are trying to rid themselves of a Saudi controlled puppet ruler and gain real independence you idiot. Or maybe you’re a big fan of the Suadi head-chopping regime and the fact that USA is eagerly providing millions of dollars of bombs for the F-16s we sold them? Just last week the Saudi air force used American provided F-16s to blow up a funeral ceremony in Sana with American bombs and missiles, killing over 100 mourners. Oh–I can imagine your reply: “Good, hopefully learned their lesson”, eh?
Hint: the Houthis aren’t fighting to install a humanitarian liberal democracy. The United States has absolutely no interest in saving them. They’re an ethnic faction in a desert who are using violence to gain power. I’ll side with the people who have the largest supply of cheap oil in the world.
The Houthis are struggling for independence from Saudi meddling in their country, which is far more important than whether they meet your standards of being a ‘humanitarian liberal democracy’ LOL. That you actually think that wanting to establish a humanitarian liberal democracy would be a requirement for getting help from USA only reinforces my impression of your ignorance of this conflict and more broadly the Middle East. Further, that you’ll blindly side with Saudi Arabia because they have oil–and human rights be damned–reveals you to be a person of zero integrity or morals. As long as you have your oil, let the Saudis blow up Sana and the rest of Yemen, right? Maybe you can get a job at the State Department, you’d fit right in junior.
Barack is just “Wagging the Dog” in Yemen for his good friend Hillary.
Never mind all the innocents killed, wounded, children’s lives destroyed (they were probably already starving).
Nothing like a hot war to take all the Wikileaks dumps off the air and off the pages of America’s most respected newspapers.
Cough…
I agree!
Why do they think expanding unpopular wars is vote getting?
Methinks it will backfire big time,as everything they spew does.
What USA national interests are at risk in Yemen? Not zero, but absolute Zero.
The USA funds the Syrian rebels. Why are the Yemeni rebels different?
Make America Great Again, stop being involved where we have zero national Interests.
Why are the Yemeni rebels different? They are fighting against Al-Quaida and the Saudis. I think they are also Shi’a not Sunni and certainly not Wahabi.
Indeed.
Except, the majority of Houthis are Shia, but many are Sunni.
They are a rare group in the region as sectarian divisions don’t dictate their politics.

“…the administration is “prepared to adjust our support so as to better align with U.S. principles, values and interests.”
U.S principles are those shared with the most amoral.
U.S values are those shared with the most heinous.
And the whole point of it is that the U.S. shares the mutual interest of the entity of greed and slaughter.
The “Shock Doctrine” has long ago been brought home to the U.S. shores, which finally has enabled the American masses to wake up and finally comprehend that “If they can oppress us the citizenry so horribly it is absolutely nothing for them to cruelly ravage the world.”

Gulf of Tonkin redux
The U.S. Government has gone off the deep end over its failed reckless Middle Eastern policies. I set up a new account (under the name, nonsensefactory) over at the Guardian to point this out and got 124 likes on my first post on the topic (a re-edit of an Intercept post, actually). After that, I posted similar comments on this Guardian article by one Ranj Aladdin, “Why Brexit will hurt the prospects for peace in the Middle East.” All six comments were deleted by “Guardian moderators”, but the account, nonsensefactory (only a few days old), hasn’t been deleted, yet.

My current platform keeps getting blocked, this is the THIRD time I’ve had to rewrite this comment (shutting down the system and wiping all history seems to help, as well as copying to Notes for recovery). Why so paranoid, little monkeys? Afraid it’s all going to go pear-shaped, are we? Screwed the pooch, have we? Gosh, at least the Intercept isn’t censorship-central.
But if it all goes sour, kiddies, allow me to pass down the instructions of my “wise elders”, from back in the day, when Ronald Reagan was telling us GenX kiddies that “we may be the generation that will face Armageddon.”
“Dig a shallow trench, and cover it with boards. Pile a foot of earth on top of the boards. Crawl into the trench, place your head between your legs, and kiss your ass goodbye.”
6) Simultaneously, Russia launches attacks on all missile sites and military bases in eastern Europe, as the U.S. destroys Russian military bases in Crimea and Syria.
listen up planet. He is right. This is what the dumb sold-to-wallstreet anything-for-wallstreet nutcase Hellary Clinton will do. She is literally off the hook. Elect Hellary, kiss your family goodbye, and enjoy the radioactive hellfire sizzle of your skin being burned off where you sit stand or sleep.

Want to know what life is like if you DON’T?
I imagine that as soon as the Syrians or the Russians have a good idea that the extremists have managed to get a supply of MANPADS, bomb runs will get a screen of drones. Not only is the terrain around Aleppo not mountainous (so planes can fly their runs from any direction, rather than straight down a pipe) tech has changed too. No longer does a guy with a MANPAD have the advantage (plane is flying fully exposed, while he’s hidden amongst a whole bunch of clutter) because drones can get close enough to kill him faster than he can fire and flee, even if they don’t get him before he fires.
And because the extremists are basically pinned down and surrounded, those drones don’t even have to be long range.
The Guardian banned me a few years ago for pushing back against Jessica Valenti’s troll articles.
I don’t think a site that includes authors who intentionally troll should ban vitriolic responses to the troll and/or just point it out.
Haven’t bothered trying to do what you did to post again as I think I wouldn’t last long if I ever criticized one of the articles. Criticism of a Lucia Graves article? Might be a point in the ban calculation, etc.
P.S. That’s the only forum/site I’ve ever been banned from. Didn’t curse, didn’t insult (except for insulting the article’s value)…
I still visit it because there are a few good objective writers still there (Trevor Timm for example), plus a lot of the comments are still good, plus it’s a bit funny to observe how various writers seem to compete to be the most hypocritical or write the most eye-roll articles. Plus Richard Wolfe, who is so try-harding and bucking for a position in the Clinton admin. It’s just so obvious. Hopefully someone else allowed to post reading this could note this as a reply to one of his articles. But, you might be banned for doing so…
The Russians could do a lateral move. Bunch of cruise missiles slam into key Saudi Oil Facilities, the global markets crash and the derivative bubble funding all western “superiority” unwinds. While everyone are busy blaming each other, the Houtis flood across the border looting and burning.
The Neocon’s sacrificed the dollar’s future international reserve currency status in their pursuit of perpetual warfare in the Middle East. Now instead of allowing this transition to develop gradually, which would eventually lead the American people to examine and analyze the events that resulted in a drop from a position of wealth and privilege, they may pursuing an even larger war. This would accelerate the dollars loss of status, but it would also shift the blame for such an event to Putin instead of the Neocons. Worst case scenario would be if the Neocon’s bombed Russian positions in Syria in Obama’s last 3 months in office. This would escalate tensions to the level of military violence between our countries and this situation would inherited by the next president, thus partially absolving the new administration of blame. If the escalation to military violence doesn’t occur during Obama’s administration then the next president would bear full responsibility for any potential war, thus making it less likely to occur. Another viable explanation is that Appello is a tactical strategic city and it is about to fall under control of the Russians and Assad. If it does, then the Neocon plan of overthrowing Assad’s government will be greatly diminished. Thus to get their regime change in Syria the Neocons are willing to start a war with Russia, because that’s how crazy they are.
Actually; Kerry and Laverov have signed a deal to cooperate on Syria. (There would not be a Christian alive in Syria if Russia had not stepped in. Assad, like Saddam and Qaddafi were the best things their country’s had, look at them now). Even a top US General is admitting it would have been better to leave the Taliban in power. Russia has offered to make the deal public but the USA says no; surprised, you shouldn’t be. Of course, Nuclear war is the number one threat to the world and has been for a very long time.
I miss the old days, when starting a war was a big event that would grab everyone’s attention. Now governments specialize in escalating wars so gradually that it becomes impossible to define a beginning … or an end. Most people probably thought the US was already at war with Yemen, so this won’t even be mentioned in the mainstream media, unless it’s a really slow news day.
Yeah, I miss the old days too. Now, sometimes even the best irony and satire can’t handle the weight of crap that TPTB are dishing out so fast.
I wish you a speedy recovery.
And of course the answer is never to just get that and all US military ships away from the place. Are the Houthis going to bomb that same ship sailing a few miles from the east coast actually defending the country?
Oh boy! Another Gulf of Tonkin Incident! Leading to another Viet Nam! Another Afghanistan! I sure hope I’m wrong. :-(
Do you think there are Yeminis who’ve voluntarily taken up the profession of rescue worker? Think they might have grabbed hard hats to wear while they risk their lives entering bomb damaged buildings? Think they dig up children who’ve survived the devastation an American supplied bully bomb leaves in its wake? Think they, or bystanders, use their phones to take pictures of the rescue, the rescuers, the rescued, and post them?
Think you’ll ever see those photos in American media, or hear interviews with the rescuers? Well, unless, of course, the US does to the Sauds what they did to the Husseins.
There is a netflix documentary called, “White Hats” you might like.
The Houthi missile launchings were most likely a false flag attack staged by the CIA to allow the U.S. to escalate its horrific genocide of innocent Yemenis.
Yes, Bush I did this in Panama to justify his attack there (U.S. military personnel, who had no business being there in the first place, were supposedly attacked by Panamanian soldiers; turned out to be false, attack was by U.S. operatives to give political cover to invasion). Don’t believe anything these assholes say without substantiated evidence to support it.
DONT BELIEVE A FUCKING WORD! OUR GOVERNMENT NO LONGER HAS THE AUTHORITY TO DO ANY OF THIS. WE NO LONGER CONSENT!
Makes any difference– Public or Private policies of PesObama, taught by CrookdClintons.
Well this isn’t going to end well.

Much better you than I
Uh-huh. No “sense” of such; glad to know they’re relying on their feelings – it’s so damned scientific. But they sure killed some people, probably ‘bad guys.’
Meanwhile the attack on them did fuck all, really, because ‘defensive measures’ nullified it (if it happened at all – I don’t believe anything my government tells me, as George Carlin puts it, perhaps a little overzealously). Sounds damn similar to the Israeli bastards murdering a whole bunch of Palestinians because someone threw a fizzling firework at them.
But then America never seems to believe in a fair fight, or being honest, or…
The establishment sure wants more war, though. Practically itching for it, even as Obama tries to wash his hands of his ongoing rivers of blood across the world.
Amen, Amen!!!
So the US now practices extra-sensory murder. How evolved.
At least the USA maintains its reputation of challenging top military powers in the world, like Grenada, Panama and Yemen. They must be proud.
next up; pre-dawn vertical insertion in Lichtenstein.
Remember the Maine and the Gulf of Tonkin! Variations on a theme.
And, uh, by the way:
It was only a matter of time before we went into/after Iran.
Regardless of treaties, presidents, the will of the American people, America’s national interest, Neocons have proven that they will always use their positions of power and influence to pursue their policy of war.
What a coincidence. Just when Obama was having seconds thoughts about Saudi Arabia, Houthi rebels launch a missile attack on a US ship but the ship isn’t hit because of countermeasures. Even though Houthi forces deny they did it, the US retaliates and Saudi Arabia is back in good standing with the US.
What a bunch of horse shit! How can anybody believe this BS. WOW!
Well said.
But… Remember the Maine!!
Next we’ll hear about the Sheik Nasrallah Trail, stretching from Lebanon to Yemen.
This NEVER would have happened had the navy not been within striking distance.
WALLSTREET THIEVES NEED A WAR
Wallstreet thieves need to spend American citizens earnings to pick your pocket so they can pay their war makers and contractors big money for big executive salaried positions the pentagon generals earn after they retire early. You earn, they rob you every which way but loose.
I sit here after reading this article trying to make sense of all this. Poor Yemen!! Caught between the brutal misleading terrorist Saudi Arabia and the US; divided by two major ethnic groups, sitting on a pool of oil coveted by both SA and US; what can those poor people do??
And we prowl the gulf waters with hi-tech missile ships laying waste to whatever we please, when we please and God help if anyone protests!!
We continue into the abyss where who knows where the bottom is!
peace
Yemen’s oil reserves aren’t large enough to be coveted by either the US or KSA.
The Saudis are in full-freakout mode because the Houthis are Shias and, to Saudis, this just has to mean that they are puppets of that most evil of all evils, Iran.
The US is, effectively joined at the hip with KSA, and has long been involved in attacks on Yemen because of the supposed danger to “our national interests” of “al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.”
New opportunities for escalation are arising. Tomahawks cost $1.6 million per copy. Watch Raytheon stock.
One wonders why we are firing Tomahawks there when they are so many terrorist targets in Syria. Then again, one of our most damaging attacks in Syria was aimed at the Syrian army.
