High school students across the country staged walkouts today to protest Donald Trump’s election as president of the United States.
Roughly half of Berkeley High School, or 1,500 students, participated in a walkout Wednesday morning, Berkeley Unified School District spokesperson Charles Burress told CBS San Francisco.
“Not my president,” they chanted as they marched.
Similar protests happened in Phoenix, Arizona; Boulder, Colorado; Seattle, Washington; and Des Moines, Iowa, according to news reports and social media.
“This is what democracy looks like,” Seattle West High School students chanted.
At Valley West High School in Des Moines, Vice Principal David Maxwell told KETV-7 that students were given 15 minutes to protest.
“The district prefers that its students are in class and participating,” Burress said. “However, we do understand their concern and we take it very seriously when they feel passionate about political issues. We’re doing everything we can to support them.”

What we are seeing in our students is precisely what Obama”s good friend Bill Ayres, the terrorist, has been pushing for years in the education reform. Not only that, many of the teachers in the classroom are also under the spell. Each and every kid who was absent from class should be suspended and each teacher that walked out should bee fired.
Great job Kids, that’s using critical thinking there. Being as how you already are some of the least educated in the Western world I can see how you would think Trump would notice your attempt to cover a day playing hooky with political trappings.
Of course he won’t even know that you skipped out on French and shop classes, but don’t let that stop you from getting a day off and feeling righteous about it.
Hey, who knew fire drills were fun?
I hope they have a yuge detention room.
My questions is: Were students allowed to protest the protest? Or do the teachers just decide what the students are going to protest?
Children where are your parents. Probably wearing some stupid baseball cap at militia practice or watching FOX.
Where’s my binkie?
You people are encouraging stupidity rather than mitigating it (which is the professed purpose of education). Teaching liberation theology and identity politics rather than teaching Civics and History is a bad idea.
The refusal to participate in elections or accept their results is one of the last stops on the road to Civil War.
Folks:
Yes, the protests are warranted. This is a scary situation. Look at what has happened already:

Very scary. If only that nice woman who exploited Haitians, ran a shadow govt, supported and caused war in Libya and Syria, approved drone attacks on innocents, stole a primary won.

protests are not warranted these kids are still wet behind the ears and the only views they have is what teachers have put in their heads and gave them time off to protest. till you have lived thru 2 or 3 elections you don’t really know what is going on and should be of voting age to be able to protest.
Maybe all the little snowflakes should go to school,r that was wrong, a library and learn something before sounding off. Maybe the U.S. does not have anymore safe spaces for them to hide.
Revolutionary Student Front is a well-financed TERRORIST communist organization — organized by Clinton/Obama/DNC and financed by Hillary’s favorite dinner companion … George Soros.

Could you post a summary of what it says? I tried your link but it becomes unavailable for me to read at a certain point.
My suggestion is to read everything you can read.
It’s an entire chapter… starting at page 146. (The rest of the book is decent, too).
You might try Torrents to find a full PDF. Look for the title.
Got some bad news for the delusional right-wingers commenting here; only about 12% of the people who voted Tuesday were under 30. Among them; only 37% backed Trump.
That doesn’t bode well for either party in the years to come. Next generation doesn’t give a shit about wall street, they don’t believe in neo-liberalism, and they think Trump is a sad and offensive joke.
>>> That doesn’t bode well for either party in the years to come. Next generation doesn’t give a shit about wall street, they don’t believe in neo-liberalism, and they think Trump is a sad and offensive joke.<<<
Neither does Nigeria. I hear Obama intends to become president of Nigeria. Hillary is going to be his VP.
Maybe you could be their Secretary of State and start the "From the Wilderness" Foundation?????
Seriously, I feel your pain . . .
I sympathize with all those marchers and protesters out there the last few nights, and their various acts of cretinous vandalism.
I realize they had their little hearts set on getting another Clinton (or Bush) in the White House as that is the only way they would resuscitate that Extraordinary Rendition Program for the torture, dismemberment and deaths of innocents.
Yes, I remember the good old days when the Clintons (1996–1998) had pro-democracy activists extraordinarily renditioned back to Libya and Egypt for torture and death – – who can forget those warm times.
Yes, that program was continued (and probably expanded) under George W. Bush — probably why so many have warm feelings for Obama and Hillary given all the former Bush/Cheney people they both appointed to government.
Surely, when innocents are tortured and killed in the name of good, clean fun, who could possibly wish for anything else?
They probably have read modern history and possess a warm spot in their hearts for John J. McCloy who, while officiating at the Nuremburg Trials after World War II, saw a woman doctor he had known from his days at I.G. Farben, and granted her amnesty for her crimes. (She was on trial for live human dissection at Auschwitz — Hey! Girls just wanna have fun!)
And then there’s that gender equity thing Hillary loves to repeat — we all remember with warmth and good feelings how the Clintons supported the Taliban back in the 1990s, even inviting them to America. (Go view that old Sixty Minutes show with the perky Diane Sawyer gushing over a Taliban jet pilot who lived in America, taking trips back to Afghanistan to bomb the Northern Alliance.)
Yup, about the only lone voice in the wilderness was Mavis Leno (Mrs. Jay Leno), who railed against the Clintons’ support for the Taliban to the exclusion of the gender survival, gender safety and gender equity of the Afghanistani women. Who could possible disagree with the Clintons and agree with Mavis, after all?
Yes, I celebrated the diversity of the Clintons’ and their extraordinary renditions of pro-democracy Arab activists — don’t we all?
With all the murders of innocents by the Bushes and the Clintons, how could there not be large groups of Americans who believe them to be warm and wonderful people?
Right wingers always sound so fucking desperate when they try to be clever.
Reagan and the CIA created the Taliban; not the left, and not even the “centerist” right wing democrats of the 90s. It was quite in fashion to support the Taliban on both sides of the aisle until they started bombing Americans. Or did you forget that the Republicans created that whole mess Sgt?
Ah don’t worry; we’re free from War Crimes now that Trump can “Kill the families” of ISIS – I’m sure their terrified. Oh wait – they are celebrating.
http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/islamic-extremists-celebrate-trump-victory-article-1.2867482
What a bunch of stupid kids. Why aren’t they celebrating like the Terrorits?
Why didn’t they protest the rigged DNC primaries? Dems have no one to blame but themselves.
There were plenty of protests about the primaries. Large swaths of the youth did not bother to vote because Clinton was the candidate. The Dems DO have themselves to blame; none of that makes Trump a good candidate, a good president, or suggests they should not protest.
This warrants one of those “people are fucking idiots” comments; of course they’re not… it’s just as Tammy Bruce (believe it was her) explained w/ group think… and they’re just kids for the most part — too much iPhone time, too much virtual reality. Kids are the future tho.
DJT doesn’t even warrant this reaction. Also the Vietnam War protests are so popular that pop culture wants to apply them where they shouldn’t be applied.
Get these kids to a YouTube video screen of Jimi Hendrix interview stating he supported the V War, understood what the US was trying to do … will unscramble the brain a bit do some deprogramming… bend the mind out of group think.
Maybe they haven’t “gotten” that “Youtube video screen” of Hendrix stating he supported the War; because it doesn’t exist. It’s true he clarified that his performance of the Star Spangled Banner was NOT an anti-war statement; but he never said he supported the war; and his band played at a benefit for an anti-war group in 1970 years later. So… maybe yours is the brain that is scambled there?
He definitely warrants this reaction. He is a pathetic fucking loser with no qualifications who rode to victory on a wave of nativist anger and the virtue of having an establishment opponent who was disliked even by her supporters. His 100 day plan – should he succeed in passing it – is a fucking disaster for almost everyone not making more than 250,000 a year; and given his stance on global warming and coal – a disaster for most humans.
These kids fucking get it; it’s not “too much virtual reality”. They are trying to save the one reality they have left.
>> They are trying to save the one reality they have left. <<<
The one reality they have left: DELUSION is their reality.
Hillary’s qualifications — Alinsky and Soros School of Terrorism and Democide.

Would these young people been just as courageous if the other side had won, i.e. a confessed and bragging criminal against humanity?
If no, or not sure, where is their critical thinking, who the hell is educating the youth and who gave him or her a driver’s –paron, teacher’s– license?
hello –
I have to echo Capn Canard, who is absolutely correct in pointing out the horrible decision the so-called “responsible” U. S. adults just made. What these students did was fantastic. First of all, as a retired educator, I know that all learning doesn’t come from books. Part of traditional education was always citizenship. The right of protest is guaranteed (supposedly) by our First Amendment. They actually put citizenship into practice.
I think one thing they may have been saying sort of dovetails with Capn Canard was: ” We can’t vote right now, but we’re not happy with this. It’s our future, too!”
Now as to the questions of protests meaning anything – probably not as much as they should. Decision makers are so insulated now, for one thing. But along with other actions (see the views article by John Nichols at Common Dreams) can be part of a resistance strategy.
And I’ll say that the protest meant something to me. Reading about these students DOING SOMETHING gave me just a pinprick of light today, a day when it was sorely needed.
I guarantee you that if I were to test these students in US history and/or Civics the vast majority would fail. Teaching children to protest that for which they have little real understanding is sheer liberal nonsense.
It is sheer American nonsense not just liberal. We tout voting and opinion as a right that everyone should have but put no effort into teaching people how to form opinions or inform themselves.
For decades we’ve watched the regression of education when there is so much progress to be made. Our current national system has a slogan of ‘Preparing America’s Students for College and Career’ it completely omits all aspects of what it means to be a good citizen besides being a good worker.
Protesting the status quo is progressive in nature. However, I understand your position to be largely correct as well. I say this even though I participated in a nationwide strike of high schools and colleges who stood in opposition to the Vietnam War in 1969. The difference being that I faced the draft when exiting from high school. Even then, I knew far too little about US History and World History to put my personal dilemma in a proper critical context. It takes a mature mind and a lot of real life experience to parse and appreciate the subtleties of political philosophy. Training children to think critically is essential to a correct understanding of the world. Because students are being trained to be mere cogs in the machine, unquestioning compliance with authority is deemed be a more desirous trait by prospective employers than critical thinking skills.
I completely agree with this. I’m currently going through Rothbard’s lecture series ‘The American Economy and the End of Laissez Faire’ and it’s FAR more valuable than any nonsense I learned in high school.
Yes, the series can be found on youtube:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2ndkCvHGj4
I honestly believe that a lack of emphasis on US history and civics is not altogether unintentional. People are far more suggestible and malleable when they are ignorant of their heritage. An essential element of regime change is to systematically rob a target nation of its history and cultural heritage.
And I guarantee you that if I were to test YOU about US history you would fail miserably. THERE…see how easy it is to judge people of whom you know nothing about.
Let’s test the logic of your two-tier supposition. Firstly, it is your position that no generalizations can be made about the level of education an average US high school student is working with. Yet standardized proficiency tests are applied nationwide to fourth, eighth, and twelfth graders. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, Back-to-back National Assessment of Educational Progress tests have repeatedly revealed that ” Just 45 percent of 12th graders scored at or above ‘basic’ on the history test. About 10 percent of seniors scored ‘proficient,’ and 1 percent are considered to have an ‘advanced’ knowledge of U.S. history.”
http://www.usnews.com/education/blogs/high-school-notes/2011/06/15/high-school-seniors-us-history-scores-remain-flat
This article further explains that “A student is considered to have a “basic” knowledge of U.S. history if he or she scores at least a 294 on the 500-point scale. In 2010, the average score for seniors was 288, which was a slight improvement from 1994 scores, but not significantly different from scores in 2001 or 2006.”
But hey, let’s not stop there. the NAEP U.S. history test score trend at the eighth-grade level reveals that the average proficiency score rose from 259 to 287 during the period of 1994-2014.
Not enough? okay then… a 2016 article entitled “Students Flunk U.S. History Test: Congress Calls on Teachers to ‘Redouble Efforts'” (education world: issue 100), reported that “65 percent of college seniors surveyed failed to pass a high-school level American history test.” But not to worry, the article also revealed that, of the students tested, “Ninety-nine percent of the respondents correctly identified Beavis and Butthead! ”
Shall I proceed and beat a dead horse by reciting National Center for Education Statistics relating to trends in Civics testing? No? I thought not!
Now, let’s test the merits of your second supposition which read: “And I guarantee you that if I were to test YOU about US history you would fail miserably.” Upon what evidence do you base this claim?
Randl??
Are you there???
“When ignorance gets started it knows no bounds.” – Will Rogers
NAEP scores have tended to be fairly constant over time in spite of various reports of doom and gloom from right and left people with agendas.
Keep in mind, some of those high school seniors are 18 and quite capable of voting.
Yes, the thought of it troubles me deeply.
Was thinking the same myself. They have no clue except the” look at me “. Teachers should be ashamed of themselves for leading this behavior, sheep is what sheep does.
Thanks for the feedback nanz. It is good to see at least a few haven’t completely abandoned reason.
LaChance, it’s sad when the only thing that you have left to prop up your defeated and pathetic epistemology is a couple anemic walk-outs by high-school students. Wake up to your own powerlessness.
when i was a kid, we protested the war.
now kids protest the defeat of a warmonger.
To be fair, many of them did back candidates who were third party.
What is the old saying? If your not a liberal in your 20’s (or earlier), you have no heart. If you are not a conservative in your 40’s, you have no brains.
You will thank us 20 years from now for not inheriting from us a 3d world hellhole.
lmao… Louis, you make that comment as if High School is a place of education and learning.
FYI, it isn’t.
It is a place of social conditioning.
It is where you’re conditioned to endure hours and hours of meaningless tedium and drudgery, like a plantation or a sweat shop.
Sure, these kids might be trying to skip a class, but I doubt it.
And keep in mind that all the responsible adults just elected a man who bragged about grabbing vaginas of young women 40 years younger than he. He also said Mexicans are rapists, and Muslims want to kill us all or something equally vile.
And it’s all published in the news media. Well done adults! Such a fine example.
And you blame these kids?
These kids are doing the right thing, I suggest that those who object need to immediately retake their middle school civics class…. but I doubt it would help.
You can’t fix stupid.
Who doesn’t like vaginas? Stop being such a whiner.
Also, he said that SOME of the Mexicans that are ILLEGALLY crossing our border are rapists. He also said that “Mexico isn’t sending their best people.” He said that some of the people crossing the border are good people. All of those things are true. Listen to the words he is saying and get your bias out of the way.
Also, the vast majority of Muslims do want to kill us. By “us” I am talking about non-Muslims. Or at least those of us that will refuse to convert should the opportunity ever arise. That is a basic tenet of Islamic faith. It isn’t vile, it’s fact.
“Vast majority”??
You know there are 1.something billion muslims in the world, right? Do you have any muslim friends?
Louis, Republican policies (and a lot of what Trump campaigned on/as) are exactly the things that CREATE 3rd world hellholes. Or do you think that massively unequal societies with militarized police keeping them in line through violent ‘law enforcement’, the declaration that attempts to change the system are acts of treason, crumbling or nonexistent infrastructure everywhere except the rich areas, and a media well heeled to portray the discontented as mentally deficient (or misinformed) for not recognizing that this is the best possible form of government enacting the best possible policies doesn’t constitute a 3rd world hellhole?
Pawns in divide and conquer.
And the divide and conquerors are the media.
Maybe Donald will enforce antitrust rules that POTUS’s since Reagan have let lapse, like a muscular FCC.
Should be his first act.
Not a good thing to learn at this stage…. they need to learn to accept that one does not get what one wants in life, always….. AND, they need to understand, Mr Trump was elected in a democratic election and he is NOT the president YET! Their protest is meaningless and is not going to have any effect.
And for the rest of their lives, they will consider participating in protests that are of no value, lacking any goals to achieve.
Hah, yeah I’m not convinced their motives are pure here. Let’s skip learning anything because a guy we don’t like won the Presidential election? Stupid.
Another fine example of the Trump supporters thought process.
