After months of criticizing Hillary Clinton for mishandling classified information while serving as secretary of state, Donald Trump is reportedly considering David Petraeus for the same job, even though the four-star general and former CIA director pled guilty to passing classified information to his former lover and biographer.
The Guardian reported on Thursday that Petraeus is in the running for secretary of state in the Trump administration. The anonymously sourced report could not be confirmed, but Petraeus reportedly met with Trump just before the election, and has since been complimentary about the president elect.
On German cable news, Petraeus called Trump a “dealmaker,” and said, “He’s right to criticize Washington over its partisanship and its inability to forge compromises.”
Petraeus resigned as CIA director in 2012 after the FBI discovered he was having an affair with Paula Broadwell, his biographer. The resulting investigation revealed that he had given her highly classified information, and Justice Department prosecutors wanted to indict Petraeus on felony charges.
According to his 2015 plea deal, Petraeus intentionally gave Broadwell access to eight “Black Books” filled with highly classified information, including “the identities of covert officers, war strategy, intelligence capabilities and mechanisms, diplomatic discussions,” and even Petraeus’s conversations with the president. He also admitted that he had misled the FBI during the investigation.
In contrast to national security whistleblowers — who frequently face espionage charges and decades in prison for divulging classified information — Petraeus never went to jail, and was sentenced to only two years probation and a $100,000 fine. Petraeus went on to draw a lucrative salary as chairman of private equity firm KKR, while many speculated he was pondering a return to public life.
It was unclear from his plea deal whether Petraeus kept a Defense Department or CIA security clearance, but he continued to advise the White House on counterterrorism strategy in Iraq — possibly requiring him to have access to classified materials.
When asked by The Intercept whether Petraeus still had a security clearance, the CIA declined to comment. The DOD also declined to comment “as a matter of individual privacy.”
When reached through his assistant at KKR, Petraeus also declined to comment.
A Congressional Research Service report from October reviewed security clearance procedures and requirements, noting there are 13 guidelines for determining eligibility. Four of those guidelines included areas that could potentially raise questions for Petraeus, including sexual behavior, personal conduct, criminal conduct and handling protected information.
However, issues raised in those areas do not necessarily mean a person won’t receive a clearance. “Adverse information regarding one of the guidelines will not automatically result in denial of a security clearance,” the report says.
Regardless of his ability to get a clearance, Petraeus’s nomination could open the administration to charges of hypocrisy. Hillary Clinton’s use of an insecure, private email server was a mainstay of Republican criticism throughout the campaign, and during numerous Congressional hearings and investigations, which accused her of mishandling classified information.
In a September speech attacking his Democratic rival, Trump said, “If she applied for a low-level job at the State Department today she couldn’t even get a security clearance.”
Petraeus previously served as an adviser to Hillary Clinton, on her national security “working group.”
The Trump transition team did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

IT IS MY BELIEF THAT GENERAL DAVID PETRAEUS SHOULD BE THE SECRETARY OF STATE. HE IS AN HONORABLE MAN THAT SUBMITTED HIS LIFE TO THE MILITARY SAFEGUARDING OUR NATION AS TOUGH GENERAL.
NO ONE IS PERFECT, BUT GENERAL PETRAEUS NEVER BETRAYED HIS LOYALTY AS AN “ARMY MAN”
MIT ROMNEY IS AN EGOTISTICAL RASCAL. A TWO FACED “MORMON” THAT LEAVES A LOT TO BE DESIRED. I PRAY TO GOD THAT HE BLESS THE GENERAL, AND THAT MR. TRUMP WILL SELECT HIM.
Not only “could get” has a security clearance.
This administration and Democrats set the standard that mishandling of classified information is fine for Sec of State, so why discriminate against Patreous?
Besides what he did was fractional compared to Clinton.
More of the same….. New criminals worse than the old criminals…
Isn’t all this classification Mumbo-Jumbo just a distraction from this guise war crimes policy… The real reason for all the secrecy: False flag attacks, torture, murder genocide…..and just to cover ALL THEIR CRIMES & LIES.
I myself am committed to supporting President (elect) Trump, especially when he does what he promised…. promoting torture aside. I am opposed to torture. See it as weak, especially when used against non-state actors…
I see the Trump situation as holding hope for a better America for the American people and the world..
Sure, make Petraeus SecState. He is another slimy bug stinking up Obama’s precious legacy. The general would be in jail if the Drone King had not rolled out the red carpet for elite criminals. Screw them both.
Come on now. Clinton got to keep hers. We all know these clearances are a joke.
I was under the impression that the U.S. Secretary of State is supposed to be a “diplomat”.
How can a military man ever be a diplomat and “peacemaker” when all he knows how to do is kill lots of people very efficiently.
It’s kinda like sending a butcher to style someone’s hair.
If Trump starts driving the world nuts, I hope the stupid Super Delegates are satisfied with themselves for trying to ram Hillary down our throats.
This could be just the impetus the left needs to organize a viable third party.
crossed my mind with a big “what the…”. But the way you put it, getting a haircut with a cleaver, hilarious. Considering that Bernie was the clear winner, the supers took a cleaver to their common sense.
3rd party!
Does Obama and the DOJ know this is going on? lol continuing …

Could David Petraeus, Rumored Candidate for Secretary of State, Get a Security Clearance?

Why not? Bill and Hillary have one, don’t they?
i was offered one
didnt want it, turned it down
know why?
way too easy to break a rule you never heard of then brought up on charges and have your life ruined. forget it. not interested.
It seemed liked the circumstances behind Petraeus’ legal troubles were politically motivated. A mole in military circles accused his mistress of harassing her. This spawned an FBI investigation (talk about overkill), which turned up classified documents and Petraeus was ousted as CIA director. The intial story was that Petraeus spilled his guts out to a random reporter in an airport who took the information to the FBI, yet that story was scrapped for a more believable one. How about Petraeus pissed off some powerful people when giving a speech to military personal, so they got revenge.
*personnel
Political motivation and connections are the reasons that David Petraeus isn’t serving a long sentence in federal prison, not the reason he was charged in the first place.
Emphasis added.
Guess where you’d be if you’d done such a thing. Guess how long you’d be there.
Point taken. Although my post was not intended to exonerate Patraeus of wrong doing, but to question the nature of the initial investigation. I haven’t followed up on this for years, so I am partially shooting from the hip on this one. Yet similarly in Scott Ritters case the media paraded his detention in a police sting to catch child predators from years back. The timing of the release coincided with his questioning the claim that Sadaam possessed WMDs. Although his past behavior is no way justifiable, the rise of the surveillance state makes anyone with a skeleton in their closet or past misdeed a political target when they challenge those who wield power.
Re: “…Petraeus resigned as CIA director in 2012 after the FBI discovered he was having an affair with Paula Broadwell, his biographer. The resulting investigation revealed that he had given her highly classified information, and Justice Department prosecutors wanted to indict Petraeus on felony charges…”
I’m reminded of a recent case where a USN sub-crew-person went to jail for taking unauthorized photos of some internal workings on his submarine;
I DON’T know if he merely shared them with a girl and / or, other friends or sold them, etc.!
If you tell your mistress-biographer about data she has ‘NO’, and/or, not-a-high, enough clearance for…as David- Petraeus has admitted to…
That’s a felony for MOST people.
So…
Why is this admitted law breaker being considered for anything, above ‘County_Canine_Control’ officer?
Why? He praised Trump, and people think the “surge” was a success.
When it comes to handling secrets, he did worse things than Hillary Clinton. (Of course, it’s not only Republicans who are enamored of him- Democrats are as well.
1. I wouldn’t trust him to do a decent and humane job dealing with stray dogs.
2. He’s being considered for SecState because he’s a member of an in-crowd that doesn’t have to follow the rules made for little people like us. The notion that we are a nation of laws is just plain bullshit.
the notion that….
they asked me what i was laffing at so i read your statement aloud
gut buster
I don’t recall an Intercept article before the election titled:
“Could Hillary Clinton, Championed by the Intercept for President, Get a Security Clearance?
“She’d make a tremendous president”
– David Petraeus
“An extraordinary leader and a wonderful advocate for our military.”
– Hillary on David
““Gen. Petraeus had an extraordinary career. He served this country with great distinction in Iraq, in Afghanistan, and as head of the CIA.”
– Dear Leader, Obama
It’s funny the Intercept never asked this same question when Dear Leader Obama retained Petraeus as a paid advisor after he was found guilty of mishandling classified information. Why wasn’t that article written?
“Former CIA director and retired Gen. David Petraeus remains a trusted adviser to the White House on its strategy in Iraq, despite being convicted of leaking classified information to his mistress and biographer, then lying to the FBI.”
– CNN News (Oxymoron)
See my post above. It would be nice if someone genuinely tried to “drain the swamp” and prosecute high-profile lawbreakers.
If Trump is considering him, one of the few good policies he pushed is a lie.
Wouldn’t his probation officer have a say in this?
Thank God Hillary Clinton does not need to get a security clearance.
Could David Petraeus, Rumored Candidate for Secretary of State, Get a Security Clearance?
ABSOLUTELY!
Married? your wife and children are more or less included. Separated? shouldn’t be a problem. Middle of a nasty dicorce? no worries – you wont talk to her anyway. Back on the dating scene? Take her to your place, have some drinks, put a cork in it. Have a large supply of corks? STAMP!
The really interesting question is: if the rules were to be followed, would Trump get security clearance? Of course the rules will not be followed because he’s God.
It will take more than voting or the kind of astroturf protests that miraculously sprung up after the election to drain the WDC swamp.
If he didn’t lose his clearance, he may still have one. It wasn’t that long ago.
It would be a disastrous choice, regardless, but the clearance I doubt is much of an issue.
Can a bear shit in the woods ?
Some of this dribble coming from the Intercept is hillarious .
Keep reading mud. Eventually you will have to confront the cognitive dissonance which will eventually form, due to undeniable truths that confront your worldview.
The key word is “rumored”. Lacking any actual information, the press continues to speculate — and hasn’t gotten a single nomination right so far.
Trump will “speak to” a lot of people and pick a handful of them. Probably not the ones anyone here or elsewhere guesses.
“Speaking” to people is how you get their views. It offers no evidence of any kind that the person “spoken to” is in the running for anything more than an opportunity to provide input in return for some free coffee and snacks.
Just how many hot “biographers” can one Sec. of State have? Petraeus should know.
Yeah that Barge-swill is some hotie all right… Almost as hot as that HRC former sac of State….. Mmmmmmm……mmmmmmmm!!!!!!!
If there was real justice in the world, no.
Mr. Petraeus demonstrated a remarkable lack of judgment in his previous job, but that in no way disqualifies him from becoming Secretary of State. However, it is also reasonable for the government to take measures to protect itself, such as limiting the number of biographers he can have while in office.
Of course when you say have, you mean the number that he’d f**k on the side, right? Like they say, the sex that happens in D.C. is INCREDIBLE!
Of course he can. Laws do not apply. It’s America!
Betrayus belongs in jail. That would take care of any concerns of his receiving a security clearance.
Glad I’ll never work for a railway and that I won’t murder any children because the war criminal organization that is the nsa told me to. What a waste.
Hopefully the NSA FBI and DOJ (Ahem…Lets attribute the OPM hack to the Chinese boys) can track down and re-write or re-lose every copy of his fat OPM file.
To prevent further acts of treason by General Betrayus the Donald should hook him up with either a high end escort service or put him in touch with Bill Clinton and Prince Andrews buddy Jeffery Epstein.
http://www.newsweek.com/2015/02/06/sex-offender-who-mixes-princes-and-premiers-302877.html
It’s hypocrisy, plain and simple.
It’s like saying that murder of a child by some coward driving a train is okay because the nsa ordered it to be done and all of the train drivers are pedophilic cowards. I hope none of them read this because I don’t like when they try to lure me (or others) onto the train tracks.
Typically what they are looking at when deciding on whether or not to grant a clearance is not so much one’s having sterling character but rather whether or not one could be blackmailed into giving away classified information or becoming an agent for another country. Past behavior in safeguarding classified information comes into play, but not in cases where the person under consideration is well placed.
Item: On a questionaire for renewal of my TS, I admitted having smoked pot and snorted coke. Got the clearance, and later some SI tickets. They don’t care what you have done, as long as they know about it.
Item: A coworker who had previously worked for the CIA on the SR-71 woke up one morning to find that codeword project plastered all over the front pages of the Washington Post. The leaker? Lyndon B. Johnson. The coworker would have been imprisoned for life or worse had he released that information, but nobody was going to tell the President he couldn’t declassify anything he wanted to.
Moral: If Trump wants Petraeus to be cleared, he will be.
Obviously you are younger than me. When I joined Army Intelligence in 1964, any legal involvement other than a minor traffic violation would have eliminated me. While serving in a covert unit in Vietnam, a First Lieutenant had his clearance stripped and was sent home for being suspected of being a homosexual. How times have changed. If Petraeus is granted another clearance, it will become a sick joke.
Curiously, the military has tougher rules for its members than for its contractors, and ditto the IC. As recently as 2001, the last time I had my TS updated, it was still not OK to be homosexual.
The reasons for that are curious, and speak to the reactive nature of our Forces of Order. Back in the ’50s a couple of gay guys at NSA defected to the USSR, leading to the conclusion by our Neanderthal leaders that Gay = Traitor. Now the same kind of attitude has spread far and wide, for example to TSA where Wearing Shoes = Bomber.
In the mean time, Aldrige Aimes, Robert Hanssen, and John Anthony Walker were straight, passed multiple polygraph tests, and were above suspicion (if you exclude Aimes’ habit of driving late model S-class Mercedes on a salary about equal to the sticker price) for years before being uncovered. Wonderful testimony to the open mindedness and thoughtfulness of our leadership.
I’m glad you brought up the fallacy of the polygraph. While I was at Camp King with the 513th, I became good friends with the head of the group’s polygraph section, who advised me to NEVER to take a poly exam. This, coming from a man who was the past president of their US professional organization.
The final irony in this particular case is that SFC Glen Rohrer was the polygraph operator in the Frankfurt office, and is the same person who defected to the Czechs in 1965, causing the eventual demise of the 513th’s spy operations in Europe. Contrary to Wikipedia, he was never allowed on Camp King due to his covert status. Just one more reason I didn’t join the CIA with their love of the polygraph.
In regards to Martin and Mitchell, while their claimed sexuality became a factor in a purge of the NSA (Despite no reports of homosexuality by Martin (in fact, he had sex with multiple women in a night) and Mitchell being in relationships with both men and women), there were other factors as well, and the internal NSA report contradicted that. (To be fair, any sexual deviation from the norm was fair game in those days.)
Fun fact: Not long after Snowden fled, some people were suggesting that a “two-man rule” would prevent similar breaches. I simply pointed this case out as a way around it.
Interesting, isn’t it?
General Petraeus is a hard figure to dislike. I think that has played to his advantage, which is not the way justice is meted.
Didn’t Kurt Eichenwald report on Mr Trump destroying evidence before his own cases?
Speaking of a two-tiered system, I wrote to the Southern District (San Diego CA) Court to suggest to Judge Curiel that he not grant a delay in the Trump U case or allow Mr Trump to testify via video link. Justice for some? Enough already.
I have absolutely no trouble loathing the despicable Betrayus, war criminal, liar, subverter of democracy.
