Hours before the Women’s March program was set to start on Saturday morning, many hundreds of people were already filing towards the starting point. Washington’s Metro, which on Friday saw below-average ridership, quickly filled with crowds wearing pink “pussy” hats and signs.
By midday, crowds with no end in sight were converging around the rally’s center and kept pouring in.
The March, created as a counterpoint to Donald Trump’s inauguration, was criticized in the first days after the election for its lack of inclusiveness. But a group of women of color eventually took the lead and the efforts to highlight a broader range of issues was everywhere to be seen on Saturday, with women, and men, of all ages and races carrying signs in support of everything from immigrants to black lives, indigenous struggles to reproductive rights.
Everyone expected the march to be big, but not this big. Organizers had planned for about 250,000; on the ground, it felt like at least twice that — and there were over 700 sister marches in other cities in the U.S. and around the world.
Even as space ran out, the mood remained peaceful and festive. Organizers had planned for marchers to move along the southern side of the mall, but so many people showed up that several marches took off in different directions, fanning along all sides of the Mall and filling the space in between with a sea of hats, music, and signs.
From where I live, in southwest Michigan, anger at the way NYT dismissed us as bumpkins with no interest in the Women’s March. We sure as hell did!

This was a march organized by a network of progressive women, including CAIR-NY’s Linda Sarsour. Also, some more establishment types, like Planned Parenthood, an organization with a special focus on the needs of women.If Soros actually helped fund it all, I think somewhat better of the man.

This was not a Democratic Party rally. Three of the national chairs (women of color) were: Linda Sarsour, Tamika Mallory, and Carmen Perez. Sarsour was a Bernie Sanders supporter and as such has issues with the Democrats. Many people I personally know who are furious with the DNC attended the marches.

Donald Trump is not going to “succeed” at anything other than immiserating many: blacks, Muslims, women, and god only knows how many he will kill abroad. To say Trump is an enemy of civil liberties is an understatement of epic proportions.
1. His Attorney General is so racist he couldn’t get appointed to the federal bench in the Reagan era. Jeff Sessions does not accept the Civil War amendments or the enabling legislation Congress passed to give them effect.
2. Trump became a born again anti-abortionist for his presidential run and chose the virulently anti-abortion, anti-gay, Mike Pence as his Vice President. Those two making appointments to the federal courts — especially SCOTUS– is a disaster looming for women, LGBTs and god knows who else. 4. Trump chose to head the CIA, Mike Pompeo, a man who won’t rule out torture, and who is abhorrent on privacy rights and due process.

I’ve long been aware of the Clinton, Bush and Obama crimes. All recent presidents and their war cabinets belong in prison for war crimes – and their financial advisors belong in prison for collusion in the greatest banking theft in history. The majority of the marchers that I talked to in Oakland understand this. Fear of Trump was the main reason people voted for Hillary — and fear of Hillary was the primary reason people voted for Trump. It was a rigged election with two corporate candidates – it was not a real choice. Trump was the candidate to punish the public if they dared vote against neoliberal austerity embodied by Clinton. I agree that the Democratic Party is corrupt and can’t be redeemed — just like the Republican party. Both must be abandoned. The answer is not a greedy neo-fascist like Trump. We need a third way – a progressive alternative – built from the bottom up. And maybe a 4th and 5th way. It will take a bit of time – but could perhaps be ready in 4 to 8 years – perhaps just in time to save us from fascism and climate change. The “black and white” fallacy — TINA – there is no alternative to a two party system will soon be shown what it is – a myth – much like the myth that a black man can’t be elected – or the myth that a misogynist-racist-xenophobic can’t be elected – or the myths of American exceptionalism and meritocracy. These are all lies the MSM tell us. Hopefully we won’t be fooled again.
This was a march whose main statement was “women’s rights” = “human rights” — I find it very powerful in the face of a misogynist President Trump. And as regards the symbolism that you find “obscene”, perhaps you should rethink your prudish attitudes. The strategy of taking back “words” to dis-empower the derogatory meaning imposed on a group by a racist-sexist-homophobic patriarchy seems to have served minorities rather well — why would you deny women the right to define themselves. I would never purport to tell women how they should take back their power – I will just support them in their choice. the demonstrations was called, The Women’s March. if you feel there are other pressing matters to be demonstrated against or for (and certainly some of the ones you mention seem worthy to me) then you know what to do….

He reminds me of the Billy Mummy character in the Twilight Zone episode “Its a good life” – a child ruling the world. Hopefully the adults around him will do something about this monster.
But I do agree on one point – we should avoid the corporate media because it is mostly fake news – not worth the time to read. In fact, we should avoid mainstream news altogether — it is used to manipulate us – especially talk radio. Instead focus on analysis and insight and education. These are not found in the mainstream media. For analysis go to non-mainstream sites like The Intercept or Nakedcapitalism or Counterpunch. But read them critically since even these sites contain some nonsense. Find sites with investigative reporters who do more than report facts that are forgotten a few days later. But most of all read books and discuss them with others. Read critically. The 3 books I recommend people to start with are: 1) C. Wright Mills’ “The Power Elite” to understand how power functions without a conspiracy (although conspiracies do exist as Watergate, Iran Contra, WMDs in Iraq, and Fed bailouts demonstrate), 2) Naomi Klein’s “This Changes Everything” to illustrate the connections between the twin crises of capitalism and climate/environment, and 3) Michelle Alexander’s “The New Jim Crow” so that the divide and conquer tactics using cultural indoctrination to perpetuate racism (and sexism) are made clear and can be rendered harmless. We must form local community groups so we know we are not alone in our efforts to understand and solve the problems brought on by our indoctrination in a system of rule that is anti-democratic. Corporate rule, by neoliberalism or neofascism or even plain vanilla capitalism, is the problem since it puts profits before people. And the first thing to learn is not to be afraid to question the myths you have been told – to challenge your indoctrination. And one of the early lessons is that it is a false choice between neoliberal austerity (Hillary) and neofascism (Trump). Economic systems are merely rules to which we agree. There are an infinite number of such economic systems just as there are an infinite number of rules. Don’t get locked into the false choice of binary thinking. Answers are not found in simple slogans like “free markets are efficient” (which has been proven wrong). But start by educating yourself – read.

The Democrats lost the election. What is the purpose?
The purpose was to let the Trump administration know that regardless of who he nominates to The Supreme Court (and over 4 years it could be 2-4 new justices), that American women will NEVER allow the right for a woman to terminate an unwanted pregnancy to be repealed.
Of course if a Trump Supreme Court ultimately votes to return the issue to the states it will mean if you are a woman living in Alabama or Mississippi and you want to terminate a pregnancy you will have to travel to a “blue” state in the future to do so.
Which means as long as states like California and New York etc. remain liberal enclaves abortion will NOT be illegal in the United States, only in some states.
The same type fight is coming on the pot issue. With states like California, Colorado and Oregon now being full on legalized pot states, the Trump administration could decide to get nuts with these states and try to reinvigorate the “War on Drugs”.
I anticipate more of a public backlash should this occur than the Supremes returning the abortion issue to the states.
For me, the folly of the women’s march against Trump today all over the world SHOULD have been in front of the DNC headquarters in D.C.
