White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer asserted at Thursday’s press briefing that Iran had attacked a U.S. naval vessel, as part of his argument defending the administration’s bellicose announcement that Iran is “on notice.”
National Security Adviser Michael Flynn on Wednesday said he was “officially putting Iran on notice” following the country’s ballistic missile test and an attack on a Saudi naval vessel by Houthi rebels in Yemen (the Houthis are tenuously aligned with Iran’s government but are distinct from it).
The White House press corps wanted to know what being put “on notice” entailed, and Spicer responded by claiming that Iran’s government took actions against a U.S. naval vessel, which would be an act of war. “I think General Flynn was really clear yesterday that Iran has violated the Joint Resolution, that Iran’s additional hostile actions that it took against our Navy vessel are ones that we are very clear are not going to sit by and take,” he said. “I think that we will have further updates for you on those additional actions.”
Major Garrett of CBS News quietly corrected him, saying “a Saudi vessel,” and Spicer then responded almost inaudibly: “Sorry, thank you, yes a Saudi vessel. Yes, that’s right.” He did not in any way address his false claim that it was an Iranian attack, however.
Watch Spicer’s remarks:
Pentagon spokesman Christopher Sherwood confirmed to The Intercept that the attack was in fact conducted against a Saudi warship, and that the Pentagon suspects Houthi rebels. “It was a Saudi ship – it was actually a frigate” said Sherwood. “It was [conducted by] suspected Houthi rebels off the coast of Yemen.”
Fox News initially misreported that a U.S. ship was somehow the target — which is perhaps where some of the confusion in the White House originated
This is the huge banner on @FoxNews right now. I have some important context to follow, from a US official. #Yemen https://t.co/QcfRzD71QL pic.twitter.com/coBrDwAujO

This, of course, is how American wars start. In the infamous 1964 “Gulf of Tonkin incident,” as it is often referred to, the White House and the Pentagon accused North Vietnamese forces of attacking two Navy destroyers in the Gulf of Tonkin off Vietnam on August 4. President Lyndon Johnson used the attacks to coax Congress into approving a resolution, known as the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, that authorized military action in Vietnam. As the New York Times noted a few years ago, the “attack never happened.”
And way back in February 1898, a U.S. warship, the Maine, was moored in Havana’s harbor when a huge explosion blew it apart, killing most of its crew. The explosion was blamed on Spain, and led to a rallying cry particularly in U.S. newspapers of “Remember the Maine!” In April of that year, the United States declared war on Spain, even though there was no proof of Spanish responsibility for the explosion, and much reason to doubt it. As the Washington Post reported, an official Navy inquiry concluded in the 1970s that “a mine or torpedo could not have been responsible for the blast. The likely cause was a coal bunker fire that ignited the ship’s magazine.”
The U.S. and Iran both have ships in the Gulf area. The U.S. dispatched ships to the Bab-el Mandeb strait off the coast of Yemen in October to reinforce a Saudi-led naval blockade that has devastated the country and left 14 million people going hungry. At the time, an anonymous government official told Fox News that “this is a show of force.” Later that month, after rockets fired from Houthi-controlled territory appeared to target a U.S. warship, the Obama administration authorized strikes on three radar sites in Western Yemen.
In early January, a U.S. Navy ship fired warning shots at Iranian vessels the Pentagon said were approaching it in the Strait of Hormuz, on the opposite side of the Arabian peninsula.
Update: February 2, 2017
This story has been updated to include Spicer’s comments partially correcting himself.
The issue with the US vessel was that fast attack boats from Iran got within 900 yards of the ships and we had to fire warning shots against them. These are similar boats to what was used by the Rebels to suicide bomb the Saudi vessel. Don’t be haters so much that you naive to what is really happening here.
You added too much BS dressing to your word salad and now it’s left a bad taste in my mouth.
trump will attack Iran
So where is General Flynn getting his information from? Clearly the White House got their news from Fox News and one huge “misinformation” saga. This MSM crap reporting in this country has got to stop. I say revoke all licenses by the MSM lying pigs and only let the real truth tellers of news give us the scoop. Make the MSM scum be reduced to a category supplying “entertainment”, not news.
Sorry, but that wasn’t misinformation. The government didn’t get that from Fox, people in the military gave them story to Fox. I know you are haters, but let’s not be naive about what is going on in the real world, it is dangerous. Let’s not let our political hatred and biases (on either side) cloud the reality of the world around us. History has shown that doesn’t usually end well (see Neville Chamberlin). General Flynn is an extremely competent leader and wouldn’t make comments like that with logic behind it. I think we must trust our Generals and leaders on their strategic opinions (Yes, even Trump was stupid enough to say he knows more than the Generals and we all gave him crap for it, so let’s not give him crap and hypocritically question them ourselves).
Yes, yes let us not all be “naive haters” by asking critical questions. We should all obey the almighty Fox News or else we will be like Neville Chamberlin and miss the new age Hitler hiding behind the flower pot.
Government, always and forever the biggest source of fake news.
Right on, you’re dead accurate. Like Benghazi was a protest, you can keep your doctor and plan, there was no classified information my server, we didn’t run guns into Mexico, etc. The stimulus will create jobs. Can’t trust them at all!
“Fox News initially misreported that a U.S. ship was somehow the target — which is perhaps where some of the confusion in the White House originated”
Nice try but hardly the case. Fox was referring to the pentagon sourced Houthi video of the incident in which the voice stated blah, blah, blah….and death to America blah, blah, intimating the attackers MAY, that’s MAY have thought they were attacking a US Navy ship.
You’re right this was a travesty. We certainly know these Houthi rebels wish no harm to America or our allies. I’m sure it’s nothing to worry about. Those Iranian fast attack boats we had to fire at because they were only 900 yards from our ships, was just a welcome party. They want to say hi, share some boat drinks, listen to a little Jimmy Buffet. There is nothing to worry about in the Persian Gulf.
What Are Hallucinations?…Mr. Spicer….If you win the war….will my family be able to afford medical care….If you win..will police still take orders from known meth freaks and drunkards, pimps and whor.s..educated in the traitor coward American college’s…No???/ Then lets hope we are invaded soon, so we can be liberated from terrorist and frauds known as americans= Hallucinations? constitution..lol..lol…freedom…traitors & liars..
Iranian financed, supplied and supervised. Iranian in all but geography.
Suddenly the US CorpaGov media is (rightfully) concerned about starting war based on falsity – but they went right along when the DNC pushed war with Russia.
I nominate Tucker Carlson as replacement press secretary
So according to the current administration we are at war with Islam but also united as one with Saudi Arabia
I think they mean that we are taking Saudi Arabia’ s side in the sectarian war we started by invading Iraq
One alleged expert after the next has been on MSNBC ..Stephen Hadley (16 words, ignored counterterrorism expert Richard Clarke’s warnings) David Ignatius, Ambassador Marc Ginsberg, Ambassador Nicholas Burns etc etc have been on pushing the idea that Iran is out of line testing a missile, they all infer that Iran is breaking UN resolution. MSNBC new Greta Von Susteren has been the worst repeating numerous times this week that Iran “wants to wipe Israel off the map. Today (Saturday) Jacob Saboroff had a young woman on (can’t find her name) on who was pushing the Iranian’s have put on their missiles “death to Israel, death to the U.S.”
Never anyone who was spot on about the lies in the run up to the Iraq invasion, no one who warned against Obama and Clinton’s military intervention in Libya, warned against arming unknown rebels in Syria…like Hillary Mann and Flynt Leverett. No one who can provide an accurate and educated perspective about Iran. No one
Mostly war pushers who are once again banging let’s go get Iran war drums based on inflammatory rhetoric. Danger zone once again.
Has everybody in the world all of a sudden become incapable of reading a map?
Persia is now named Iran , and The Persian Gulf is Irans access to the sea.
Why in hell wouldnt it have its own warships in its own Gulf ??
Iran does not own anything.
Just like the USA (and every other supposed nation)
it is is a fake entity to the corrupt greedy financial elites who
actually have no allegiance to anyplace.
The determiners of policy for the faking U$A and its faking allies
are only really concerned about and driven by
the accumulation of private profits.
The problem for the greedy elites is that,
unlike the faking U$A and its allies,
Iran is a source of money which is NOT cooperating with
the religion of private corporate profiteering.
That is why they (and other uncooperative places) are
the target of lies and militant aggression by the cabal of
corruption.
Indeed, absolutely correct and the agenda is the Full Spectrum Dominance of the Earth. The NWO being fomented on all the nations with the multi-cultural and borderless land masses control by the Banking and Oligarchy cabal.
Right on Comrade! National boundaries are just things made up by elites. That makes total sense. Do you realize that Iran is a capitalist economy? Their oil industry and businesses are not state owned? Ugh. Capitalism and free markets have lifted more countries and people out of poverty than anything else. Ask people who lived in the old Soviet Union, or currently in Cuba or how about Venezuela where they are eating their dogs to live. Ask people how much better China and India are now that they have embraced capitalism. Yes, some people get rich and some people get poor, it’s called life. Capitalism doesn’t guarantee equal outcome, just equal opportunity. There are too many self made success stories to say everything is controlled by elites. It’s just an excuse when things don’t work out the way you want it. Persia doesn’t exist anymore, and it included more than Iran, read your history. The US and others are patrolling international waters. Nobody is disputing that Iran can’t have ships there, they just shouldn’t buzz by other ships with fast attack boats, or fund rebels to blow up military vessels.
If you’re refering to the attack on the Saudi frigate it did not take place in the Persian Gulf. The attack happened in the Gulf of Aden near the Bab al-Mandab Strait, hundreds of miles south of the Persian Gulf.
I’m still trying to find where in the article it said Iran doesn’t have the right to have ships in the Persian Gulf.
Tough talk from yet another Navy Reserve Nancy-boy cut from the same cloth as Rummy. They can barely put their uniforms on right, can’t march, have zero physical toughness, zero combat leadership abilities and zero personal combat abilities. They are eunuchs, chairborne rangers, couch commandos, male cheerleaders, ‘men’ by biological technicality alone. Their ignorant opinions get real men killed.
Sean’s a bit like that ADD kid in class, who always had the wrong thing to say. Nice guy but don’t take his advice on fixing much, ir investments.
He’s the sort of character, who, if Don Trump was reading his ‘press statements’, he’d be calling that ‘soldier boy’ with the super greatest briefcase to stand closer to the desk of decisions.
Donnie’s first war will be the ‘little’ one Obama ‘passed-on’, with Iran. Unless Putin or China or even Venezuela does something ‘flaky’ and f*cks things up.
We just know that nothing is going to go exactly the way America wants it, 16 years of serial screw-ups are proof of that.
How do you know when Shorty Spice is lying? His lips move.
He is American… Got Hallucinations?
First question from the press should be:
“Sean, is this administration lying to try to justify an attack on Iran?”
Jeeesus..
Are they handing out bargain basement, Chinese-made false flags at the Walmart liquidation bin now?
You can finally have your very own Gulf of Tonkeen (sic), no CIA required, for the low low price of…
‘Murrica deserves this “Administration” full of stupid assholes.
I won’t forget the years that followed 2008, when tens of thousands of jobs were lost, real estate & mortgage market crashed, small & midsize companies went bankrupt, & our economy nearly collapsed – all as a result of a foolish war.
we’re headed down the same path unless, the anti-war movement begin protesting today; as tomorrow will be too late!
I agree with the principal reporting here, that the White House Press Secretary made an egregious mistake in identifying a Saudi warship as an American warship. Such errors are inexcusable. As an American, I appreciate Mr. Garrett’s gentle correction, which was promptly acknowledged and confirmed.
But I feel the need to dispute Mr. Jilani’s second point, that “Iran” did not attack anyone. Iran’s continued use of proxies to ‘fight’ — and in various cases, commit acts of terror and other times major Vienna Convention violations — should not be parsed nor excused. Hezbollah works with great influence, if not explicit orders, from senior Iranian leadership. Al-Sadr’s Shiite ‘brigade’ in Iraq also did so. The Houthis do as well.
“The Houthis do as well.”
Yes according to the Israel lobby, Saudi Arabia, Flynn, Trump, & company, Iran exerts telepathic control over every group that formed a militia or rose to power as a consequense of military wars perpetrated by foreign countries have lobbing groups in America. Also Santa Clause is making a list of who’s naught or nice. To get on the nice list we only need to give the Neocons at the Heritage Foundation over $6 trillion and the lives of thousands of young American men and women to wage war with Iran, so that these radical religious militias that arise from these these wars will disappear. It worked so well in Iraq, Lybia, Syria, Yemen, etc. that we should shut off our brains, ignore recently history or just make up an alternative reality and obediently follow these war mongers into another war.
Donny Boy is just itching to get his stubby little finger on the launch button. That will really let everyone know what a big man he is.
Regarding the headline, I think you mean mistakenly, not falsely.
No, they got it right. Falsely. That’s not a mistake anybody with an IQ above 10 can make.
Mistakenly would have applied had any of the Press Corps asked him to vclarify his remarks anout Iran and an attack on a US navy vessel. He did say that and was allowed to maintain it without being questioned, so it rises above a mere mistake to a slander, which is relaying false information.
I swear to God are you people really this stuopd
And the ‘Press Corp’ must be dumber than him! God help America, Trump won’t.
Sean Spice it up is just part of the bull shit news coming out of Washington that is deliberately aimed at dumbing down an already Fox Fake News country.
Spicer, and Fox News, will repeat the fallacies that got us into previous wars.
The article did not mention George W Bush’s fake intelligence for which the Lord Chilcot Report has blamed then Prime Minister Tony Blair for having falsified reports on the urging of the US. Bush caused the deaths of several thousand Americans by lying to the world.
Now, Trump may precipitate similar action in an area where he wants to get their oil.
GOP need to examine the danger to the world that Trump creates and balance that against their wish to remain in power. If Trump starts a war, then GOP will be decimated, along with the nation.
Perhaps Spicer should be forgiven for believing Fox “News”, despite its known unreliability. His official source for what happened is the US military, which is even more dishonest.
Here in the UK, we had a nuclear submarine off the coast of Florida last summer which conducted a test nuclear missile launch. We aimed at Africa. It decided to go towards America instead.
And Iran is the problem.
Finally, a good reason for you to renew Trident. You have smart missiles.
Hi Doug,
Yes, they now have to carry a disclaimer:
Intercontinental* Ballistic Missiles
– * continent not guaranteed
Ha! :^)
Why does Trump keep this guy around? Because he’s a “yes” man? Because there are plenty of yes men out there who are also capable of keeping their story straight.
In other news, fresh off her erroneous (perhaps false?) story about the Bowling Green massacre, Kellyann CONway will be replacing Sean Spicer. So, instead of a yes man in that job, Trump will have a yes woman. So, progress, I suppose, for women but, for Trump, the media, and the public, probably not. By the way, I’m making up the replacement part of that story to make a point about the Trump team which, in baseball terms, would have to be considered cellar-dwellers.
Confirmed: He and the entire staff up to the Fatmalade’ are clinically …insane.
Funny, loads of stupid comments today.
And a former Norwegian PM detained at Dulles as part of the travel ban. Anybody ask Spicy Meatballs about this?
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2017/02/03/former-norwegian-prime-minister-detained-at-dulles-airport-for-an-hour-he-visited-iran-in-2014/
fetal alcohol miscreants can’t reason, can’t do math, can’t tell fantasy from reality – see FASDs physiognomy
In the past six months the rebels (who are paid armed and equipped by iran) 1. Sunk a uae vessel that was previously owned by the usa 2. Fired missiles at a us navy destroyer 3. Attacked this saudi vessel also previously owned by the usa. 4. Conduct a host of maritime pirate activities. Is Spicer an idiot who mispoke without a doubt yes! Is he some evil mastermind trying to start world war 3, not a chance. And to give him that kinda credit just makes us look dumb. This place has a history of attacking any navy that passes through the area ( uss cole) and a united states ship was recently attacked there thankfully they shot down the missiles and no sailors were hurt. Drawing attention to an idiot just gives him more credibility let’s drop this one
When you have a lying President, why would you expect his Press Secretary to tell the truth. Lying is, after all, the First Tenet of the Evangelical Republican Religion.
Here’s a question for you. What makes you think someone “expected” him to tell the truth?
Go on Larry, find us some wide-eyed idealist here who thought this.
When you don’t – you won’t – you can come back and explain why it is a waste of time for journalists to call out lies.
Pat on the back Larry, way to go man, you expected him to lie, you are so awesome, who saw it coming besides you?
Here’s another good article on why Team Trump’s effort to ratchet up tensions with Iran is so stupid:
http://www.irishtimes.com/news/world/middle-east/us-relations-with-arab-world-strained-by-trump-s-edict-1.2959403
So why do this? Catering to the more xenophobic far-right Trump voters, and to the Saudi and Israeli regimes?
How does the Black Hawk Down incident in the 90’s reconcile with the statement that Somalia has not caused any U.S. fatalities in four decades?
Well, that was in the context of a military occupation. How many Somali fatalities did our forces cause in that operation?
This is in the context of domestic attacks which is why it’s about the ban on people entering this country from the countries on the list. Obviously there were thousands of U.S. servicemen killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. I thought that would be common sense and wouldn’t have to be explained.
It’s Friday, and time for the analysis of Brooks and Shields. Think of it as a parable.
– – –
The PBS NewsHour is brought to you by the Gilded Age; by Carnegie Steel; by Mark Hanna & Co., a public-relations firm for the 19th Century; and by viewers like you! Thank you!
JUDY WOODRUFF: … the aftermath of the USS Maine explosion in Havana. For analysis we have David Brooks, columnist for the New York Times, and Mark Shields, syndicated columnist. Welcome, gentlemen.
DAVID BROOKS: Thank you.
JUDY: So, the Sampson inquiry found that the Maine was sunk by a submarine mine. This is a big deal, don’t you think?
MARK SHIELDS: Very big deal, Jeff. At least two Trump Administration sources tell me that they knew it was sabotage from the start.
JUDY: David?
DAVID: Well, the Spaniards did do their own inquiry, the Del Perel-De Salas investigation by their navy, which said it was coal dust. Internal explosion.
JUDY: There was nothing on that in the Hearst or Pulitzer press, nor in Fox News. Not the day of the explosion, not since.
DAVID: I wonder why?
MARK: Aw, c’mon, David, you’re going to take the Spaniards’ word over our Navy’s? And the Maine was the latest word in U.S. naval technology. Ships like that don’t just blow up over a handful of coal dust. And 274 of our innocent sailors are dead. Someone’s got to answer for that.
DAVID: You’d think, with the Civil War, we’ve had enough excitement for this century.
JUDY: What about the press reaction?
DAVID: The yellow press has been baying for war over Cuba for several years now, especially Hearst. And Pulitzer. And Fox News.
MARK: “Baying?”
DAVID: Baying. Remember when Hearst sent the artist Frederic Remington to cover the Cuban rebellion? Remington telegraphed back saying he couldn’t find anything inflammatory enough, and Hearst cables back, “You furnish the pictures and I’ll furnish the war.” Next thing we get drawings of an American woman being strip-searched by Spanish customs officers. Turns out later the inspectors were women, not the men Remington pictured. By then the whole USA had gotten an eyeful.
JUDY: Well, it was shocking.
MARK: Well, it is the Victorian era. How often do you see naked ladies in newsprint?
DAVID: And inflammatory. And misleading. She was searched by female customs agents, not the men Remington put in his drawing. Pictures can lie, Mark.
JUDY: Anyway, now we have the USS Maine explosion.
MARK: Yes. Trump’s not going to hold back the war effort now. Just watch, this outrage is the final straw. The Spaniards blew up one of our largest warships! In their harbor!
DAVID: Leaping to conclusions.
MARK: C’mon.
DAVID: And now we’re going to rush to war and just watch: a hundred years from now, they’ll say it was a mistake. At least it’s not Britain: we almost got in a war with them three years ago over Venezuela, remember? All the ballyhoo for war was as loud as this, and yet it came to nothing. Now, here we are in 1898, and our new President’s foreign policy is being driven by warhawks like William Hearst and Steve Bannon.
JUDY: Speaking of hawks, environmental scientists express concern about the future of the passenger pigeon. For that story here’s Fred de San Lazaro in Des Moines …
Witty and clever. Thanks for sharing.
Flynn is a known master at misinformation, that was his previous job. Spread lies enough times and it becomes fact. His spreading lies along with his son nearly cost innocent people their lives because of a rumor concerning a pizza shop. Now, he is trying to start a war over another fictitious attack on our military. He is the boy who cried wolf. Only difference is, he has a master (Trump) allowing him to do so.
Well, how dare Iran put their country so close to waters that a US ship might need sailing through? I mean, the ship that isn’t US, because it’s Saudi. But it qualifies as “us”, because inside every Saudi there’s an American trying to come out, right? But not in Iranians, because they’re Iranians (also known as “Houthis” to experts like me and Sean Spicer).
Meanwhile, Trumps other alternate-fact spewing skank, Ms. MakeAmericaGagAgain Conway, continues to prove what a complete, utter moron she is…

“Most people don’t know that because it didn’t get covered,” she says in the best Minitru fashion.
THE JOB IS OBVIOUSLY TOO MUCH FOR THIS GUY (SS) THINKS ITS TIME HE STEP DOWN AND GO BACK TO SELLING INSURANCE
Just one more lie by the Trump Administration. That’s all they do is lie. I will never expect to hear the truth for the next four years from anyone associated with the White House. Alternative Facts are LIES.
does anyone remember the gulf of Tonkin?
“does anyone remember the gulf of Tonkin?”
The ship involved in the Tonkin Incident passed yesterday through the Ballard Locks in Seattle on her way to dry-dock.
They are going to spruce her up for display.
Do the words “Reichtag Fire” ring a bell?
The daily lying that this administration is engaging in, is unprecedented – even for life-long politicians. What is even more disturbing is how little those in the media are confronting them about it. Watching a liberal reporter, Chris Matthews, fail to confront Kellyanne Conway yesterday when she invented a story about a terrorist massacre in Bowling Green was just as shocking as the lie itself. And only a few print and internet outlets seem to be actually putting in any kind of effort to counter these claims.
Alternative facts, PERIOD.
He’s lying, call a liar a liar. stop normalizing these disgusting people
We may be looking at the shortest career in the history of press secretaries. His mistakes and out right lies are an embarrassment to his boss and our country. He has to go. So does his boss but that’s a different story.
Sean Spicer = Baghdad Bob
Wow. The US is in no position to accuse anyone else of acts of war. And deliberately connecting this into the missile test is just looking for an excuse to go to war. We are daily committing acts of war around the world and in this case, specifically in Yemen both directly and indirectly. If anyone declared war on anyone else for acts of war the world should go after the US.
Spicer made the mistake because the label on the vessel said “made in the USA”.
Unbelievable that some of you are blaming Obama. President Obama attempted to broker an agreement favorable to all parties. Our whole economy was on the line. http://fortune.com/2016/04/22/why-americas-special-relationship-with-saudi-arabia-is-on-the-rocks/
Any difference between “Comical Ali” and Sean Spicer, anyone?
what a freaking hack
“Major Garrett of CBS News quietly corrected him, saying “a Saudi vessel,” and Spicer then responded almost inaudibly: “Sorry, thank you, yes a Saudi vessel. Yes, that’s right.” He did not in any way address his false claim that it was an Iranian attack, however.”
Spicer lies as much as Trump. Never has an administration and his press been at such odds with the truth. Trump hates it when the press points out his lies.
They were rude in pulling over a Navy boat that breached their waters…so let’s nuke them! The fact free philosophy of Trump and his people are dangerous.
“Trump and his people”
Trump only cares about Trump
and “his people” include democrats and republicans
because they are supporters of the predatory economics which
help lousy, vain, assholes like Trump
to rise to the top of the crap-pile.
Gulf of Trumpkin moment from Deceity Spice.
Lie Your Republicanassoff !
>This story has been updated to include Spicer’s comments partially correcting himself.
It would be nice if the author would partially correct the title. Spicer didn’t “falsely” accuse Iran of attacking a U.S. vessel, he “mistakenly” did, and then was immediately corrected by a reporter present.
The hysteria surrounding the antics of the Trump administration is becoming more shrill and fatuous by the day…
Sure, yeah “mistakenly”. If you believe that, I have a Mexico-Funded-Border-Wall to sell you.
You do realize that the words are often synonymous?
http://www.thesaurus.com/browse/false?s=t
Furthermore, Spicer’s willingness to reject reality has earned the more strong word.
No doubt that Spicer was trying to color the attack on the SAUDI boat to ratchet up unimformed public opinion about Iran. He is spokesman for the administration- the “fake news” lying media had to correct him? He told a bald- faced lie and got caught- how many other things is he willing to lie about? Maybe about the Bowling Green Massacre? Making excuses for Butthead & Co.- just make it up- close enough.
@Dan >No doubt…
The Trump administration has shown it is more than willing to stick by demonstrably false claims. If Spicer WAS attempting to “color” the facts why the immediate acceptance of the reporter’s correction and the apology?
It seems to me confusion abounds: One minute Trump and his lackey’s are complete idiots, the next they are evil masterminds.
The lies, “misspoken statements”, exaggerations, imagined slights from this administration rain down on a daily basis. It’s time for them to take a deep breath, stop listening to the conspiracy theorists, and act like adults instead of breathless teenage girls spreading high school gossip.
What? It’s still false. He didn’t correct the part about it being Iran who committed the attack. They may have supplied them with weapons, but how is that an “act of war?” We supply the Saudis with weapons and they are committing atrocities in Yemen, but I don’t see anyone calling that an act of war or clamoring for US leaders to be tried for war crimes.
The title is correct. Spicer did accuse Iran, when it was Houthi rebels. He did say it was an American ship, when in fact it was Saudi. The title stands.
He was lying. Twitler and co are incapable of telling the truth about anything.
Gulf, meet Tonkin. Clearly, the Trump gang really, REALLY want to start a war with Iran. While escalating our presence in Iraq and Afghanistan, AND starting trade wars with at least China and Mexico. You thought the Bush economic collapse was bad? Wait until Trump gets going! America will collapse into depression, dragging the world along for the ride. Putin will be so pleased.
That was how US justified starting the Viet Nam war.
USS Maddox…
Isn’t that how we started the Vietnam war? USS Clark I think.
Press secretary Spicer was actually telling the truth when he
said the attack was against one of “OUR navel vessel” because
the Saudis are representatives of the faking U$A.
The misrepresentation is that the Saudis and the faking U$A are
separate nations.
There is no United States of America. That entity is a fakery.
No, the United States of America is a corporation, whose major shareholders include the Saudi royal family, the Koch family trust, and the Kremlin.
You are wrong.
The owners have no allegiance to any specific geographic location
and,
when necessary,
they will devour even their own corporate fronts.
Why does Spicer always look like he’s on the verge of a heart attack?
Wasn’t it Israel that attacked the USS Liberty?
Indeed they did. And here is a link to a nice documentary: http://www.aljazeera.com/blogs/americas/2015/06/israel-uss-liberty-attack-150608204015123.html
Hahahahahahaha…hahahahaha… hahaha.. the more I think about it… hahahaha… this press conference makes Monte Python look like amateurs.
I was just thinking the same thing!
The absurdity is so great that it is a self parody.
Or “Duck Soup” (1933), about a manic, out-of-control President who was also misogynistic, impulsive and looking to start a war.
In less than three weeks, Trump has insulted the leaders of Mexico and Australia, issued thirteen executive orders(bypassing Congress altogether), and accused Iran of attacking the United States Navy.
Not bad for a dictator who is also a moron! I can hardly wait to see what next week brings!
Can’t wait for the day the entire press corp humiliates Spicer to the point of suicide. Meanwhile, the mere thought that Trump’s press secretary gets his “intelligence” from Fox news should send a wave of raucous, gut splitting laughter from sea to shining sea. Notwithstanding the sound of double face palms and rolling eyes across the entire IC.
Voice from Europe.. propaganda raging again comment –expresses presence of interlaced, highly integrated, intelligence community global messaging designed for local distribution. Only consistent distribution of a Propaganda message achieves expected target results. The problem is not to recognize the propaganda but to find ways, for the general public to negate it.. some kind of easy to apply formula is needed.
How about this for the formula: You can tell that he is lying if his lips are moving. Applies to the entire administration.
These fascist fuckers follow in the footsteps of those fascist fuckers that came before them. The bullshitters that pulled the Gulf of Tonkin incident and the so-called WMD in Iraq. They know that their whole ideology is build on bullshit, so whatever comes out of their mouths can only be alternative facts.
These are the same facists that spread WMD BS about Iraq. Many merely moved over to the Heritage foundation where they create policies, talking points, and write executive orders for Trumpdy Dumpy who’s busy building a wall to sit on.
Who among us believes a liar? Please raise your hand if you trust a liar. Incidentally, the White House is hiring professional liars and mudslinging. Anyone who can look the American people square in the face and lie without batting a eye lid, certainly deserve Donald Ducks backing and gratitude.
Propaganda war over Ukraine raging again. Tom Burridge , distinguished reporter for the BBC, just deleted proof of Kiev tanks advancing , in front of the OSCE observers, into Eastern held territory, from his twitter account. This shows again how embedded BBC foreign reporters are with MI6 ?
STFU Spicer, you blithering clown car idiot
The US has to find a way to justify its participation in the war in Yemen. Obama has been falsely denying any involvement for the past two years …… Furthermore it all fits in with trying to provoke Iran. On the Ukrainian front however Kiev is trying desperately to manipulate the new US administration into active participation. However the OSCE reports are clear and describe how the Ukrainian army tanks are entering the rebel held areas with force, in contradiction of the Minsk peace agreement. When McCain asks for heavy weaponry for Kiev , the world knows what is going to happen. More death and destruction !
I can’t believe those Houthis. What barbarians, enemies of the people, terrorists, war criminals, to have the audacity to attack a Saudi Arabian navel vessel in international waters. Our freedom loving allies the Saudis and others have the right to freely blockade, bomb and kill as many people in Yemen as they can and it is our moral duty to uphold that freedom. If we don’t stand up to tyranny, who will? Besides, the Houthis don’t have the cash to buy American weapons, so they deserve to die, they should not object.
What a bunch of lying lunatics. I selling all my stocks in my 401k, except for my positions in energy stocks. Even Ray Dalio wrote to his investors that these nut jobs in the White House are going to crash the stock market. Carl Ichan is already short the stock market, it makes sense that he funded a cabal to ensure his bet pays off. The Republicans probably already have a script ready to blame someone else when they shit the bed. What a sad series of events, especially when American retirement savings are forced into stocks that are so susceptible to being decimated by these lying war mongers.
Good for the Houthis. Keep knocking out those barbarian forces from the north led by a ruthless violent regime called Saudi Arabia. And, shame on Trump and his people for supporting such a ruthless dictatorship who by the way fund arm and provide manpower to the very same violent Jihadist groups we claim to be fighting. In any case, I hope the Houthis keep hitting these monsters of Saudi Arabia.
I would like to see those members of the ‘arc of resistance’ Iran, Syria, Iraq, Hezbollah, and Yemen prove to the ‘robed satrap’s in the GCC countries that people in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones, [see my comments below] these medieval scumbags are the problem, and they are exporting their Wahhabi doctrines all over the world. Its true they pay good protection money to the ‘Don’ [US] but they should be told something like this… “you have some nice oil terminals and millions of miles of pipe lines, which you need to fund your terrorism, also for your Kings and Princes to frequent the gambling dens and whore houses of Europe, Wouldn’t like anything to happen to them, know what I mean Guv’nor”
Nail on the head, Survivor.
Wow, this reporter is a joke.
If he is mistaken then why has trump not corrected him? Trump corrects everyone. Why not spicer.
Depressing.
Wait a moment… Did Press Secretary Spicer just mistakenly leak a top state secret that an American naval destroyer is actually /posing/ as a Saudi vessel? This is the guy who is our president’s press secretary?
Why the surprise from the US press?
Trump told us what to expect.
“I love war, in a certain way,”
Oh, wait, It was a Saudi ship.
I thought we’d been dropped into a matinee performance of “Doctor Strangelove: The Musical..
Instead it’s Monty Python.
Whew … I guess.
He was pointing to a reporter you idiots!!!
THE USA GOVERNMENT DOES SO MUCH WRONG AND ABUSES HUMAN RIGHTS AND IF YOU AGREE WITH THE GOVERNMENT THEN YOU ARE A PART OF THE MADNESS. AND I AM AN AMERICAN CITIZEN.
TRUMP IS A PART OF THE MADNESS. HE’S A HORRIBLE MAN.
They lied to get to Iraq and now they lie again to get to Iran? These ppl are devils?? Are you serious?? When will your hatred end??? You claim to be Bible believers but you are no different from the murderers that you claim the ppl to be…
Go read the Bible…here is you need to do:
Micah 6:8 KJVS
He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?
Execute Sean at once for this egregious error! You, guys, are grasping at the straws – a sure mark of crypto fascist leftist propaganda. That is how wars begin – gimme a beak, Spicer corrected himself (what exaggeration was corrected ? just in time to prevent a war. perhaps?!). Your devolution from excellent books and movies and generally good philosophy to hysterical overblowing propaganda is sad and disgusting to watch!
Barack Obama, you are a coward of historic proportions.
You had these demons on the ropes and should have destroyed them, yet you allowed room for them to survive and eventually win.
I piss on your legacy, you piece of filth.
Really Sam? You folks are on this board too, where you do not have an audience? Are you just trying to provoke folks, or is your vote for Donny finally sinking in?
i piss on you, you piece of sh**T, this is the result of decades of the republican war mongering and nation building in the middle east.
Barack Obama had the evil regime of Saudi Arabia on the ropes and let them survive? That’s awful. Saudi Arabians were 15 of 19 hijackers on 9/11, Osama bin Laden was Saudi Arabian, and Saudi Arabia funds the execrable madrassa system that trains and funds terrorists. It is unforgivable that President Obama let Saudi Arabia win.
Actually it was Bush you moron that had the Saudis in the crosshairs. and did NOTHING. Ask yourself why. And why did Bush/Cheney let the Bin ladin family leave NYC imediatley after 9/11. Before the No Fly Order. You have a very screwed up memory.
Why did George W. Bush NEVER hold Saudi Arabia accountable instead of starting the arms run up for the TERRORIST country? Remember he grounded all planes except the one for the Saudi family to fly home on.
How many weapons did HE supply to Saudi Arabia and how many weapons were left in the deserts that the Americans had to pay for and have since had our tax money diverted for more illegal arms deals?
Obama did the same as the rest. Sold his soul to the devil for money. Hell has a special place waiting for the majority of leaders around the world. It is called eternal hell. Sad when the strongest nation in the world is run by total rich idiots that don’t know how to do Jack shit on their own. Does the DT even know how to wipe his own ass, or does someone do that and then kiss it and pat his bottom and say job well done?
The Bannon Adm. wants a war with China. The Spicer adm. wants a war with yem./iran The Republican Party wants a war with Russia over Ukraine. How many fronts can we fight on. The last country that chose to fight a war on 3 fronts lost big time.
Once again, the Obama derangement syndrome rears its head.
Stop listening to the GOP/TP and start doing your own research using more than just right wing sites.
Says a fierce keyboard warrior ready to call for the wanton killing of millions of Iranians for being … what …demons?
Or is it a white nationalist still pissed that the rest of America didn’t pay sufficient attention to these alt-right bullies who sell rage and hatred.
Both it looks like.
I thought he meant he had the right wimg NJs and then let them win. For wasting the opportunity to take on these fascists who succeeded him, Obama deserves scorn.
You know Saudis war with Yemen is about installing a puppet government right, it has nothing to do with Terrorist attacks, right,
China and Pakistan have pledged to support Iran against any American aggression, better get yah nuke bunker kits ready.
Relatively safe in New Zealand.
Haha when he said demons I thought he was talking about Republicans.
I agree.
Poor wittle Sam A. needs to go cower in his safe space with Herr Trump.
I have a voice today thanks to my WONDERFUL Iranian surgeon at Cedar Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles. I have my breast thanks to another immigrant doctor at Cedars. Basically if we educated American’s as well as Iranians educate, there would be much more peace than violence. Ignorance breeds violence.
I say THANK YOU to Iran for sending me TWO of the FINEST FEMALE SURGEONS I could ask for.
Urine seems to be a real important ingredient in your philosophy. You guys are very sophisticated.
Badass!
What really scares me about all of this is how much Bannon really seems to want a West vs. Islam conflict. Anyone who has examined the coverage of Breitbart can see the concerted effort to create fear and anger directed towards the “Muslim world.” Then one looks at his statements that show that he wants to burn the structure of the US and the world down…to be a “historical arsonist” does seem to be his goal.
The amount of influence he has in this administration scares me more than any other thing about it.
Gary, I agree. The talk he gave at the Vatican awhile back made it clear that he wants a war with Islam, to defend “Western, Judeo-Christian values.”
He’s very aligned with not just white nationalists, but Christian nationalists. Do a little research into his, Conway’s and DeVos’s connections to the Council For National Policy and his objective becomes more clear.
“Iran’s government took actions against a U.S. naval vessel, which would be an act of war.”
let’s pretend for a moment that this were actually true, as stated.
what do you call a naval blockade then?
Naval blockades are acts of war. One could also make a strong case that sanctions are acts of war.
Unilateral sanctions not approved by the UN are acts of war. Hence US sanctions on Iran must be approved by Congress as a declaration of war on Iran.
Be careful what you ask for. While I personally believe that Congress should be involved in formally declaring war except when we are being attacked by surprise using nuclear weapons, I don’t think the current Congress views Iran any differently from Trump. The anti-Muslims, Oil interests and Israeli lobbyists exert overwhelming control over Congress. If asked they would provide our Most Omnipotent Leader* a declaration of war in an instant.
*Henceforth referred to as the MOL, or mole, if you prefer. Not the animal, but that thing on your ear that is showing all the signs of being melanoma.
Please, no Twitter spellings here. I prefer your second option, MOLE: Most Omnipotent Leader Ever.
What does UN approval have to do with whether or not something is an act of war? Nothing. The UN sometimes acts to give an impression certain acts are in accordance with international law. when in reality they are in violation of one or more international treaties.
I note the UN ambassadors are not free from hostile threats, they vote in one of the most hostile nations in the world.
Perhaps, in Spencer’s blunder we can find more truth than appears to be. He confuses US ships with Saudi ships… Perhaps, with the actual degree of cooperation between the two nations, the two navies are the same thing? Freudian slip?
Maybe a Freudian Ship??? Sorry, couldn’t help myself!
All are ships of fools
That’s what I reckon ! The Saudi ships are “ours” because they are our allies against the “evil Muslims”. In the same way any Israeli ships are ours too
FYI…. These kinds of “news” stories sound like a problem in the CIA… “drain the swamp” kind of stuff.
In other words, rogue CIA ops may be giving Spicer and Trump “colored” information. In other words, the same CIA assholes that got us tangled in Iraq because of ‘yellow cake’.
More likely he was watching Fox News and caught the false report.
So Spicer and Trump are deciding to go to war or not against another country by what is reported on Fox News. For real. A fake president is making life and death decisions based on what he heard from a Fake news site. Is anybody really okay. And a Saudi Blockade causing millions of folks to starve, and the Saudi’s wonder why their ships are a target. Meanwhile in Ukraine, not a peep from Trump on new Russian aggression there. Guess they don’t want to mess up that upcoming Exxon-Mobil oil deal, sponsored by one Rex Tillerson. If this wasn’t all happening in real time, I would have a hard time believing it!
If Trump and his ilk start a war, unnecessarily stir tensions leading to the endangerment of our country then let his spoiled rich boy sons fight the damn thing. Mine will not.
So, was Spicer’s making a mistake, was he lying, or was he thinking something else? Iran is no pushover, like other adversaries the U.S. has taken on; witness how even Israel didn’t want to risk an attack, even as it bluffed it would. But we must be clear: Is Iran our enemy or not? Do we want to perpetually keep it in a box? Should there be a rapprochement? President Trump promised that the U.S. would opt for more decisive action. It will be interesting to see if he will opt for all out confrontation with Iran, or continue the policy of containment. Or he may attempt a more limited action to test Iran. In any event, Iran will not be a turkey shoot.
In a way they did attack a US ship…more precisely what was thought to be a US ship.
More Faux News (or alternative facts, so many versions out there).
And you can prove this precisely how??
Well, maybe the attackers thought it was a US ship, but then, the attackers weren’t “precisely” (or even imprecisely) Iranians.
How many times have US ships attacked them? Aren’t they allowed to defend themselves or seek revenge?
If U.S. military ships are in other parts of the world where they’re not wanted, they deserve to be attacked.
Not wanted by who? The the dictatorship you like as opposed to the one you dont.
This is due to Iran announcing a few days ago they are dropping the US dollar. Iraq did this just before we attacked them in 2003. Libya did this before we destroyed them and killed their leader. On 1/3/2017 Congress put in a attack Iran resolution giving the President the power to use the military to stop Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. The on notice missile test came less than 24hrs after Iran’s announcement they are leaving the US dollar. The new WMD lie is being fabricated now. They will go to war once Iran drops the dollar on March 21. Please report this truth so the American people are not asleep at the wheel again like they were with Iraq.
what do we do if our government declares war on iran based off of this incident? or perhaps off of a false flag attack?
protest?
write a letter to our congresspeople?
history is repeating itself in more dimension than one, and we have very few options remaining to slow the fascist momentum.
i’d like to see millions of people go on strike. i think that might make a difference.
The people in this country made a major mistake electing this fool. Trump is a disaster in just week three.
You may have noticed that there is no long any labor movement that might organize a general strike.
Yes, that is the question. This administration plays so loosely with facts, whether intentionally or through negligence…or a combination thereof. The level of both conspiracy theory perpetrators and believes in this administration is mind boggling and, I find, very frightening.
What does one do? I’ve contacted my Senators and Representatives, keep my eye out for local protests to take part in and have written letters to news outlets calling for them to not softball their coverage of the administration. I’m already so sick of news outlets not calling a lie “a lie.”
Keep one’s eyes open to opportunities to do anything to help and take action when one can. I think that’s pretty much what were left with.
quote”Keep one’s eyes open to opportunities to do anything to help and take action when one can.”
Well then, I suggest you hop on over to Walmart. They’re having a sale on guns and ammo.
quote” I think that’s pretty much what were left with.”unquote
Maybe in your parallel 2nd Amendment free universe. btw, when is the last time someone tried to beat you senseless?
I read that a national strike is being organized for Feb. 17.
So where are these bold new journalists ready to call out false news? Only going to challenge on safe things that their owners approve of?
Since WWII, other than Korea, the US only knows how to attempt to kick the shit out of countries without anything remotely resembling a functioning equally modern military–and still gets its ass handed to it and ultimately slinks away in defeat while declaring victory.
About time it did something monumentally stupid like start a war with Iran just to put the finishing touches on this country’s demise. And possibly the globe if it employs nukes.
Because here’s a little relevant comparison for you by area and population:
Iran by area: 1,648,000 square miles;
Afghanistan: 647,000 square miles;
Iraq: 168,000 square miles.
By population:
Iran: 81 million
Afghanistan: 33 million
Iraq: 37 million
40 million of Iran’s population are of military age, and currently has active and reserve military personnel numbering at approximately 2.3 million not counting certain militias who know how to fight.
America has approximately 2.1 million active and reserve service members currently trained.
Granted technologically and financially one country dwarfs the other. That’s a big deal, except when you are halfway around the world fighting motivated human beings who have no where else to go and know their own lands like the back of their hands.
America got its ass handed to it by two nations that are respectively 1/3 and 1/10 the size of Iran with less than 1/2 the population of Iran, with no viable militaries to stand in America’s way.
Iran by contrast has a functioning military and aren’t in any way stupid and know how to defend their own land–See Iraq-Iran War for 8 years.
Similarly, America has an Iranian-American population of approximately 1 million people, in all walks of life. And even if an incredibly small fraction of them were forced to choose between loyalty to their nation of present citizenship vs. the lives of their extended family members and friends and just sit idly by while America bombs the every living shit out of them–statistically speaking even a small percentage of them being choosing the latter rather than the former could have a tremendous impact on our own shores.
And seriously if America thinks it can go it alone against Iran, much less possibly Russia and China either siding with Iran or refusing to directly take sides but covertly aiding, arming or financing Iran there will be one of two results–America will be utterly defeated on another nation’s land, or it will try to employ nukes to save its own withdrawal, and possibly destroy the planet. Because Iran will never concede defeat on its own land in a one on one battle.
Bank on it.
This is the sort of stupid sabre rattling totally delusional decision-making that leads to the end of the world as we know it with American in smoldering ruins financially and otherwise.
And for what?
Much smarter move is to abandon Saudi Arabia post haste and full rapprochement with Iran, and let them be our ally and buffer against Russia and China.
We have been backing the wrong wackos (Saudi Arabia/Israel) in the Middle East for so long we can’t even think straight any more about what’s in America’s best long term interest. And a war with Iran would just demonstrate that conclusively.
Nailed it again, rr.
Read the above carefully, people. It is an exact description of reality and a better prediction of the results of stumbling into a war with Iran than any you will see or hear from the morons in DC who are our “leaders” — whichever wing of the One Party they occupy.
The US hasn’t “won” a military conflict since 1945, with the possible exception of Grenada — ;^) — and in all that time it hasn’t faced an adversary with anything remotely like the military and and other resources of Iran.
To go to war with Iran is to effectively decide either to accept yet another ignominious defeat or to be willing to start a nuclear war.
Hmm. Must be straight outa high school.
With regards to Iranian-Americans who are permanent residents of our nation the Trump administration will do an FDR no matter what the courts will rule.
In addition to facing a prepared opponent the US armed forces will have problems providing the needs of the US armed forces. The best options are through ports of Iraq and Pakistan followed by overland transport. We know from the Afghan experience how well that works.
rrheard, excellent comment, according to Linda Bilmes at the Kennedy Law School, Harvard Uni the over all long term costs of the Afghanistan and Iraqi wars will amount to 6 trillion dollars $6,000,000,000,000. This will be chump change if the US attacked Iran. Because the GCC countries oil and gas infrastructure are so vulnerable see this http://www.gulfinstitute.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Threats_to_the_Saudi_Oil_Infrastructure.pdf Any attack would halt any oil through the strait of Hormuz, most of which is shipped through the even more vulnerable Ras Tanura oil terminal, wrecking many economies. Russia and China would have some say here, because after Iran, they know, they would be next. You can take that to the bank.
This is how vulnerable Ras Tanura is “An assault on Ras Tanura, however, would be vastly more serious. As much as 80% of the near 9m barrels of oil a day pumped out by Saudi is believed to end up being piped from fields such as Ghawar to Ras Tanura in the Gulf to be loaded on to supertankers bound for the west”.
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2004/jun/03/saudiarabia.oil
” America has an Iranian-American population of approximately 1 million people, in all walks of life. ”
For what it’s worth German American formed the the largest ethnic group in the US at the time of WWII. The great majority of Iranians living in the US have no love for the present gov’t of Iran the vast majority of them fled to the US subsequent to the revolution.
The Iraq and Afghanistan wars were wrong in every way. But your assessment that the US got it’s ass handed to it is ridiculous. The US won the wars but because our commanders in chief had no clear objectives in either case they lost the post wars. In the first Iraq war Bush Sr. was smart enough to know there was no advantage in ousting the Hussein and the Baathists because there was no way to install a gov’t that was going to be able to maintain control afterwards. The US decided that the war would be about getting Iraq out of Kuwait and that was done successfully. Bush Jr. had no plan or objective other than toppling the Hussein and AlQueda
First off the US didn’t win shit in Iraq II or Afghanistan. The turning point in Iraq II was literally paying off certain militias to fight with American instead of against it, and “the surge” just got more of everybody killed without any lasting result. And the US slunk out of Afghanistan just like every other nation has who has been dumb enough to try and control it for any length of time. Seasonally, the Taliban re-asserted control almost every year over large swaths of territory.
The Iraq I War (Desert Shield and Desert Storm) took a mobilization of the US and almost every other nation with a military except Russia, China and Iran with everyone in the coalition kicking in tons of money and personnel to supplement America’s primary forces.
And not really a great military victory over a nation, Iraq, that had just been battled to a stand-still by Iran, 3 years later, when Iraq I started.
So get your facts straight.
And my point about Iranian Americans aren’t that they are disloyal to America, but that even if any fraction of them were because they didn’t like the idea of America bombing the fuck out of their family and friends, because of America’s agenda against the Iranian government, then I don’t know how to explain to any better then the regular folks of Iran would pay the price of America’s war not the Iranian government. Killing people’s family and friends has a way of radicalizing them, and if you don’t believe me study the little bit of “terrorism” that has occurred in this country since our numerous fiascos against Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere in the region–it is usually the number one thing they state–you are killing regular folks in the lands with people or a religion we have empathy for–not that you are knocking off government officials of a government we dislike as well, or that we have some loyalty to.
“not really a great military victory over a nation”
I never claimed it was a great military victory did I? I was taking issue with your claim we got our asses kicked.
“So get your facts straight”
Tell me what facts I got wrong.
“Killing people’s family and friends has a way of radicalizing them, and if you don’t believe me study the little bit of “terrorism” that has occurred in this country since our numerous fiascos against Iraq,”
Really? please name a terrorist action taken by someone from Iraq or Afghanistan in the US. It seems you are buying into Trumps logic.
Don’t get me wrong I am totally against the US getting involved in any military conflict and as I said the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were wrong in every way and only made things worse in that part of the world. But we didn’t get our asses kicked? Bush is enjoying a comfortable retirement at his ranch in Texas. The Republicans control the gov’t of the US. Saddam Hussein was hung and the Baath party doesn’t run Iraq. The leaders of Al Queda in Afghanistan have mostly met similar fates to that of Hussein. No people win in a war. But from a military standpoint we won and certainly did not get our asses kicked.
Rrheard is right on this – as far as objectives, the U.S. agenda was a gross failure in both Afghanistan and Iraq. The Taliban control something like 60% of Afghanistan today. Iran is the major external influence on Iraq’s government today. The U.S. has a total bill for the debacle of about $7 trillion. And these idiotic policies were continued under Obama in Libya and Syria, resulting in a mass exodus of refugees to Europe. Partially as a result, neoliberal projects supported in Europe by the US, (i.e. the EU) are collapsing, as Brexit showed.
Remember what was supposed to happen? Iraq the great neocolonial free-market experiment, intended to be “America’s aircraft carrier and oil tanker” in the Middle East, which would allow OPEC to be broken and Iran and Syria to be invaded, occupied, and turned into protectorates? Or how about Afghanistan, supposed to be the “new Silk Road” to Central Asian countries where Exxon and Chevron held stranded assets, as Hillary Clinton put it? Pliant corrupt pro-American dictators were supposed to be installed in Libya and Syria?
What a complete, utter disaster. If that’s not getting your ass kicked, what is?
As far as Iran today, the one thing that seems clear is that Iran is not willing to be anyone’s junior partner or client state, not for Russia, China, India or America. That’s what a more multipolar world looks like -one in which imperial neocolonial ambitions are doomed to failure.
You have the words America’s Aircraft Carrier in quotes as if that was the stated purpose of the war. You cant take the made up goals of your conspiracy, and then say because goals werent acheived we got our asses kicked.
If you are going to argue against something I write, please try and quote it in its entirety otherwise a truncated quote changes the argument, and permits you to straw man and argument I didn’t make:
I didn’t argue that “terrorists” necessarily arise from the countries which we have bombed, as is the case with Iraq and Afghanistan. But from sympathy or empathy or with the people of Iraq or Afghanistan, or with their religion.
Do you think there was no sympathy or empathy from some American Irish Catholics for both the Catholics of Ireland, or the IRA?
Much less financial support or facilitation of arms trade? Ever heard of NORAID? It is well documented they were and it was an issue between Thatcher and Reagan. Peter King (R) of Long Island was open about his support for IRA and visited IRA bars and drank with convicted felon members of the IRA, if I remember correctly.
The same wildly xenophobic, anti-Muslim King who has been frothing at the mouth about needing to go to war in the mid-east, up, down and sideways, destroy and/or run surveillance on terrorist “incubators” in the form of mosques, and prevent muslims from entering the US.
I didnt say there would be no sympathy, but you were putting forth the argument that this would somehow result in actions that would effectively undermine a war effort.
rrheard, the Intercept should give you a writing gig. Excellent explanation.
Well if they were to give me access to a full Lexis Nexis account and a part time fact checker/research assistant, I certainly couldn’t do any worse than Mattathias Schwartz or Robert Mackey.
And I’d probably be a little more restrained in my tone if I was representing a publication rather than being critical of them.
And my first piece of investigative journalism would be a complete deep dive into everything and everything about the business and philanthropic life of Pierre Omidyar, including seeking public comment on all of it from him directly for publication.
The amount of public transparency and scrutiny an individual’s life should be subject to should be directly proportion to the degree they attempt to use their wealth and position in life (overtly or covertly) to influence public policy or the “public debate” on issues. And not to be a hypocrite same goes for union officials (although their individual “power” is nowhere near what the hyper-wealthy and conglomerations of capital known as “business associations” are).
I wish The Intercept would hire some writers and journalists without a strict background in journalism to write for them.
Glenn Greenwald didn’t start out as journalist, and he’s turned out to be one of the most important voices of our time.
You’re a moron if you think USA would lose a war with 90% of there military assets involved. Iraq and Afghanistan half the public didn’t want those wars and the USA used only around 15% of their military assets. A war with Iran would not be taking lightly. The USA would dispatch 90% of its military assets to Iran and b1b lancers, f22 raptors, f35s, f16s f18 hornets, b2 spirits, c130 gun ships avenger and reaper drones, tomahawk cruise missiles would RAIN DOWN 40 days of continues bombing and then on day 41 the over 850,000marines, seals, and rangers are dropped into the heart of theran.
The overwhelming majority of Japanese-Americans and Japanese citizens living in the USA at the time of Pearl Harbor were loyal to the US government yet were arrested and interned except….in Hawaii.
With regards to the numerous allies (“Coalition of the Willing”) of the Iraq wars, most of them had quit long before December 31, 2011 at midnight. I had dubbed that alliance “the Coalition of the Quitters”.
@ Didi
I’m well aware that the vast majority of Japanese Americans were loyal. Again, not my point. About 120,000 Japanese Americans were interned. There are over one million Iranian American citizens in this nation spread all over this nation, which is good, and with significant populations in California particularly.
My simple point being, again, even if a very small percentage chose to be disloyal (not that I’m saying they would, or weighing in on whether they should) in the event of an unprovoked attack on Iran, those numbers could create serious disruptions domestically.
As far as the “Coalition of the Quitters” (and Iraq II) those who quit didn’t supply much anyway. Only 6 actually provided soldiers: United Kingdom, Australia, Poland, Spain, Portugal, and Denmark. France, Germany, Italy and New Zealand all opposed the invasion.
And, again, the coalitions in Iraq I and Iraq II were different, but America, UK, France, Australia, Canada, Italy together with Pakistan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia are basically the nations with modern military equipment in numbers, kind and degree to be able to argue they were “modern” (relatively) and “functional”. But it was primarily the “West”, and specifically America and UK that supplied the vast bulk of everything for both. This neo-colonialism must stop.
Russia, China, Iran, and India (and if you count North Korea) are the other nations of the world with relatively modern functional militaries, and none of them took part in either.
Want to know who else wasn’t part of the “coalition” in either–Israel.
One of these days the world is going to get sick of screwing around in that part of the world to defend oil, resources and Israel.
Hopefully sooner rather than before it gets everyone killed.
Meaningless hypotheticals.
So can you give me a link where an “invasion” was mentioned by this administration?
in 1953 we overthrew the “secular democracy” of Iran an installed the “Peacock & the Shah of Iran”……The United States a DEMOCRACY overthrowing another DEMOCRACY, that of Iran. I guess you can say it was based on LIES….
the Korean war was based on lies..Viet Nam ?? but then we bombed Cambodia who we weren’t a conflict with?? and we dropped more bombs there than we did in Japan……

I think you’re missing the point: he didn’t mean a US ship when he said “our Navy vessel,” he meant that the administration is working primarily in the interests of Saudi Arabia (and other Trump business partners).
How do you know it wasn’t the Saudi’s that handed all that money to the Clintons?
Factually, the Clintons earned more from the Saudi than Trump’s business.. and, the Clintons are private citizens
You are missing the main point here. Granted, the Saudis have had their hands in the pockets of US leaders since 1945, extending them significantly deeper during and after the administration of Bush Sr. But your guy Trump said he was going to take a hard look at our alliances. He beats up on solid democracies like Germany and Japan, but keeps his mouth shut when it comes to the chief financial sponsors of ISIS, the home of the majority of 9/11 hijackers (and bin Laden), a regime that murders homosexuals, stones women to death on the accusation of adultery, forbids Christians to practice their religion, and so on, ad nauseum. So it turns out that Trump is not better than the worst of his predecessors when it comes to Middle East policy, and arguably much worse. As he is a self-proclaimed business genius, the most attractive explanation for his behavior is self interest.
So Trump is going to substitute the mainstream Democrats’ desired war against Russia with a war against Iran? Well, I suppose that this doesn’t pose as much of a danger of nuclear war, but if that’s the only upside …
in my pro-fay-shun-all estimate, north korea, venezuela, israel and iran want to be left alone to do their thing. Israel is the exeption in that it regularly attacks its neighbors for expansion. Russia tried to reclaim territory they already occupied since WW2 and the US threw a fit, the same US with 100+ military occupations around the world – like Russia has in Ukraine and Syria. None the less, attacking Iran with accusations of nonsense is cheap theatrics, below the belt as they say.
either that or the military industrial complex just petitioned the donald to double their budget. In true American fashion, any excuse will do.
Less than 2 weeks in office and Team Trump is already buying the intel bullcrap. Does the cia leak in hypnotic gasses into the air system at the white house? I seem to recall Barack, Dubya, Bill (not so much) and the Geezer having the same problem. GHWB knew better.
I don’t know if Bush the First knew better, but I think he was head of the CIA in the 70’s. So he at least had an idea of their games – unlike the last four presidents.
exactly.
The US may not have been fully forthcoming on some of the incidents which led to previous wars. But Mr. Spicer has a sterling reputation for being strictly factual, so I’d be willing to cut him some slack in this particular case. If the Houthis were from Iran and Saudi Arabia was part of the United States, this would indeed have been a clear and unprovoked attack.
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2017/1/21/1623435/-Sean-Spicer-lies-blatantly-gets-trolled-hilariously
You mean this guy? He hasn’t been in 2 weeks yet, and is rambling, mumbling, stumbling, has to get corrected by the press on who owned the ship, not to mention, he is a Press Secretary, so you know most of what they say is BULLS*IT anyway! Come on man… Take the partisan glasses off.
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2017/1/21/1623435/-Sean-Spicer-lies-blatantly-gets-trolled-hilariously
Come on man!
Especially the alternative ones. ; )
Too funny, Benito!
I love your sense of history, Duce! Spicer is clearly motivated by the response of Stephen Douglas to Abraham Lincoln’s question, “If you called a cow’s tail a leg, how many legs would a cow have?” (Douglas’ answer: Five. Lincoln’s response: Four. Calling something a leg does not make it so.) I guess Spicer forgot who won that election.
Are we really going to let these psycopaths lie us into another larger war? We need a coup.
Let us not forget Iran Air Flight 655 shot down by the USS Vincennes in July of 1988. We never apologized.
In today’s world, mistakes and misunderstanding of the intentions of the “other side” can make the “Guns of August” seem like a carnival in comparison.
KD “We never apologized” George H.W. Bush, then Vice President of the United States, said during a presidential campaign on August 2, 1988 that “I will never apologize for the United States – I don’t care what the facts are… I’m not an apologize-for-America kind of guy”.
Two years after the tragic incident, the same captain (from the Vincennes) was awarded the Legion of Merit, a high award, given “on the basis of unambiguous evidence and sterling performance, without a blotch of tarnish”.
“Facts” rarely matter when it comes to national war machines. Thanks for the additional details. I had forgotten those.
“updated to include Spicer’s comments partially correcting himself.”
I bet the guy’s underwear is partially clean, too.
Are these guys smart enough to pull off their very own Gulf of Tonkin? Do they even need to?
“Do they even need to?”
Good question. The Gulf of 911 Incident is still a rallying cry.
I noticed that moronic propaganda when it first came out: http://www.foxnews.com/world/2017/01/31/exclusive-pentagon-believes-attack-on-saudi-frigate-meant-for-us-warship.html But where do you denounce idiots ahead of time?
I mean really … Houthi sailors do a suicide attack into the hated Saudis who are pounding their country into a pulp, and the guess is they were *really* trying to attack the ship of another country they have never attacked and just screwed up? Who makes this shit up? It must be a sweet gig, if you can get it.
Some journalists are already backing off asking tough questions.
The lies are a bit more dramatic than what you say. Houthis are filming and talking on the video, they know they are hitting a Saudi frigate, they admit doing it. Next, what we hear from the Lie House is: Iran tried to hit a US ship and by mistake Houthis hit a Saudi ship. How stupid do they think people are? Never mind, don’t answer that!
Is the Trum regime back to the old ‘Gulf of Tonkin’ strategy to get us into a war with Iran?
These clowns can lie day in and day out and lie about telling lies. They will lead us into war.
“The truth is that all men having power ought to be mistrusted.”
The problem is that they don t even know whete Iran is or Saufi Arabia or any other midlle easter countries for that matter! Remember to them it s all bad people! Not surprising when you think that most americans and all of trump supporters including trump and his harem have no idea that they are other countries in this world.. nevermind…. it would useless to try to explain to them.
The strait of Hormuz on the other side of the Arabian peninsular- that would be the bit where Iran is? I wonder how the clown would react should Iran send warships to blockade the naval port of Norfolk? and how would the USN react? sauce for the goose etc
You assume the Persian gulf doesn’t have 7 other countries other than Iran with their own navy? The US has huge navy presence there. If Iranian even attempt a blockade they will be sunk by advance air force of USA/Saudi/UAE. If Iran could do it they would’ve done long time ago.
The Press must start working together. What the hell are they doing there if not to make things transparent?
Follow up questions for clarification- not rocket science.
Everything is at stake. What part of this do they not get?
They are reporters for chrissake.
Next to Kellyanne Conway, Spicer is the most obnoxious ignorant of all characters Trump has brought to power. He is Trump’s “Baghdad Bob”. The inevitable impeachment of Trump will happen in 8-10 months from now. What is so painful is going through these 8-10 months and probably 2 months thereafter and watching and listening to gang of characters like Conway, Spicer, Flynn, et. al. And Toxic wastes such as Sean Hannity as the pimp for all these characters.
Actually, other than putting a brave face on Iraq’s immediate battle situation, Baghdad Bob’s reporting tuned out to be pretty accurate. Much more accurate than the daily gruel dished out to Americans by the NYTimes & Wapo. Go back and watch his videos, they don’t seem so funny in hindsight. He really doesn’t deserve to be compared with Spencer, RIP.
I meant compared with Spicer not Spencer. Typo
The Insane Clown Posse in the new administration is just itching for any reason to launch into another endless war. As in the past the ‘real powers’ will use all methods of blatant propaganda as an excuse to use ‘the most powerful military in the world’. Just once in my lifetime I’d like to see a modicum of reasoning skill used to avoid war. But no, the ministry of truth will find any, even if false, excuse to kill lots of people including our,(the USA’s) young men and women. Every day we get a dose of nonsense from the ‘new regime’ that just inflames relations with heads of other states that will be cowed to support the US’s aggressive actions through coercion as if they’re the mob doing the deals that they can’t refuse. I just hope the Pentagon can mitigate the idiots on the hill to avoid the war we don’t need. However I’m not holding my breath.
Come on man..really? Lol
I love how we speak in terms of such great relations around the world when we refer to the last 8 years of destroying America. As if in the last 2 weeks under a Trump administration these problems are just now coming out of the woodwork. The past administration is the exact reason we are going through these issues right now..let’s not be blinded by the night!
Sure doesn’t help when the previous two-time Nobel Peace Prize winning President pretty much bombed at will. When the “level headed” guy is blowing people up with nary a pretext what constraints can be put on the next, crazy(er) guy?
Spicer, like tRump himself, is profoundly ignorant about almost everything, especially anything having to do with foreign policy, or, well, the Constitution and law.
For the life of me, I cannot understand why Iran is the big bad guy, and the Saudis are ignored.
LGBT Issues? Iran forces gay men into sex changes. Saudis kill them.
Christians? They can worship openly in Iran and do have certain rights, including parliamentary representation. In Saudi Arabia, forget about it.
Nuclear Weapons? Ayatollah Khameni issued a fatwa against them. The Saudis are reported to have a “cash-and-carry” policy for Pakistan’s nukes.
Taliban? Iranian diplomats were killed by them. Saudis recognized them.
Al-Quaida? Iran sends Revolutionary Guards to fight them. Saudis fund them.
IS? See above.
Iran doesn’t kowtow to American hegemony. The House of Saud has a “special arrangement” with the US dating from Valentine’s Day, 1945.
Blood and Oil
“… value has been estimated at anywhere between US$1.25 trillion and US$10 trillion, making it the world’s most valuable company.”

Saudi Aramco
The Iranian regime is shitty, repressive and all sort of other things. Just like the Saudi regime. The ;prime difference is that Iran and the Saudis hate each other – and the likes of the US and the UK count the Saudis as their allies.
AIPAC, its the only reason, we need to get those traitors to move to Israel.
1) Saddam was the only arab leader who supported Palestine. Certain group in Israel wanted him removed. Certain group in Saudi Arabia provided means to fabricate a pretext to do it.
2) Iranian proxy in Lebanon, Hezbollah, defeated Tzahal in Lebanon. Iranian proxy Houthis stand between tha Saudis contol of port in Yemen and oil trafficking route.
3) Certain group of bankers in the US, that is tied to a certain group in Israel, bankrupted and then bankrolled Trump in the 90s.
4) Given the influence Iran gained on the ground in Syria, Iraq and Yemen it presents danger to interests of certain international financial-industrial groups. Firstly group that happened to control the Suez Canal once.
———————————————————————————————–
Cold crusade or Hot crusade?
1) absolutely false. Assad supported the Palestinians, the Iranian Supreme Leader supported the Palestinians.
3) nonsense, Trump bankrupted himself. It had nothing to do with bankers tied to Israel or any place else. But of course if you have any actual evidence to back up this claim I would like to see it.
4) How about some specifics. Iran is having plenty of economic problems of their own. What “international financial-industrial groups” ? Why do you conspiracy wackos always speak using vague terminology like that ? Either you have a real name and can back up your claim or you don’t and you can’t. I’m betting the latter.
1) On Asad:
Linda Sarsour:
Carnegie Endowment For International Peace
On Iran:
Iranians are not arabs, silly.
3) Don’t want it, don’t buy it, it is interwebz.
4) I provided a clue even a nitwit could understand, conducting a brief google research.
You are free to ignore my alien conspiracy, it’s your right, I’m not presenting it as a ‘serious business’ either.
1) How does Linda Sarsour’s comment or Ibish’s opinion prove Assad didn’t support the Palestinians? Hamas had their headquarters in Syria for years and until the start of the civil war Syria. There has been a change since but at the time Saddam was around Syria certainly supported the Palestinians.
Yes Iranians are not Arabs, you got me.
3)In other words it’s bullshit.
4) Clues? Are you too much of a coward to anonymously state who you are referring too ? Or do you know it will prove who you really are ?
You are free to back up your claims and if you can’t I will feel free to call bullshit.
Come on,I dipped you in your own shit, yet you continue to object. Hamas wasn’t a ruling party until 2007.
I answered to your other points in reply to my own post just now, you may study that as scientifically as you want, lol.
Firstly Hamas didn’t need to be a “ruling party” in order to demonstrate Syrian support for the Palestinians and they certainly did exist well be 2007.
As for the rest, it’s as I said in my last post bullshit that you can’t back up and too cowardly to say without using code.
Strawman.
I said:
Palestine: PLO (Fath) Yaser Arafat, Mahmud Abbas, official gov. and ruling party before Fatah–Hamas civil conflict in 2007.
I’ve patiently answered you on every counterargument you had in your replies to me, where you prove yourself to be historically illiterate and everyday ignorant person.
Now you can return to worshipping your shovel, whatever that is. This conversation is over.
Face it Syria supported Arafat .
http://articles.latimes.com/1988-04-25/news/mn-1218_1_yasser-arafat
You answered nothing . Too stupid to provide any documentation that backs up your claim.
May be I was a bit harsh. I was half-jokingly advising Rothschild-Zionists(Israel)-Trump link as a possibility why there would be confrontation with Iran. That followed my assumption stated here. on January 29 2017, 7:38 p.m
One can see the current ban as a prelude to a massive military invasion, and would cautiously advise an analogy: policy towards the japanese during the Pacific War.
We saw that before:
– Suez Canal wiki
Rothschild initiative in establishing the state of Israel is a well known fact.
Trump’s connection, Bloomberg
Again, I’m not saying, that Trump is 100% Roths/Zionist bitch that plans to destroy 90 per cent of world’s population with fluoride. That would be a cospiracy theory. I’m stating that Trump has connections and his policies are super-friendly to the State of Israel (Bibi acknowledges that). And in current circumstances it is possible that extreme pressure would be put on its geopolitical rival, Iran.
There’s the other guy, Emmanuel Macron in France, that worked for the same guys’ firm. That doesn’t mean he’ll become a president and starts something in the ME. Because for France it’s not an option, but in case of US, this possibility is pretty real.
You’re asking the wrong questions. This is about oil, resources generally, and geopolitics, not social issues.
The U.S. and U.K. overthrew Mohammad Mosaddegh in 1953 and replaced him with the western lackey Shah. Since the 1979 revolution that removed the Shah, the U.S. has hated Iran, which became an ally of the Soviet Union after the revolution.
One big reason as mentioned above is petrodollars. Everytime a country starts plans move to a different currency they get bombed or worse. Ex. Saddam and now Iran. There are others. The Saudis, Emirates etc don’t pose a threat to the dollar based global oil trade the undergirds US relative wealth and global superpower status.
If the Trump administration goes too far with its demonize Iran campaign it will sink his domestic agenda like US foreign policy spiked the domestic agenda of Bush and Obama. The only ‘win’ will be another million+ immensely suffering death and destruction.
The left, progressives, and the rest of us will not see any progress in America if the CIA warmongers win, again. The CIA has set a trap and the left has stepped into it.
Misleading headline. He stated Iran backed rebels thought it was a US ship. Get ur shit straight
Please fix this small grammatical error then delete this comment. Error:
and the Obama administration authorized a strikes three radar sites in Western Yemen.
That’s true, and the Maddox actually fired first in the “attack” two days earlier. On the other hand, the crew of the Maddox thought they were under attack on August 4. They were fighting radar ghosts.
The Johnson administration shamelessly, and with malice aforethought, exploited the incident in the Gulf of Tonkin, but at least they had the parties to the incident right.
In contrast, Spicer didn’t even correctly identify the nationalities of the entities involved in the Red Sea action.
Another set of alternative facts.
Can’t be real sure (Not) but a replay of the Gulf of Tonkin might an extraordinarily bad idea. Those who seek conflict could at least amuse US with some originality.
Understatement of the thread, so far. Actually, don’t worry; Operation Iranian Freedom will be a cakewalk. We will be greeted as liberators.
It doesn’t really seem that Spicer could handle much originality. He doesn’t appear to be the brightest guy ever to serve as WH press secretary.
It didn’t go “unchallenged” by any reporters. The very next followup, missing from the edited video you posted, was “You mean a Saudi vessel?”
Spicer: “A Saudi vessel, yes.”
Of course, then the reporter repeated Fox News’ incorrect analysis:
“They thought it was American, but it was Saudi.”
Spicer: “Yes.”
Just another day at the typing pool for that overpaid group of stenographers.
Questions? Follow up? That’s not what we’re paid to do.
They’re go-to excuse these days is being afraid they’ll “lose their contacts” if they actually investigate the bastards they’re supposedly reporting on. In other words they might not get invites to posh Washington dinner parties and swanky functions.
*their
The usual suspects of MSM will support the war with Iran, just as they did Iraq. Just because there’s a new face in the Oval Office don’t think that the same hands aren’t still on the wheel. Once the clown president has served his purpose and lit the match he’ll most likely be removed one way or another. WW3 was already started before Trump arrived, just take a look over at the Polish border.
