Macron offered Americans a message like those once delivered by U.S. presidents addressing people suffering under the yoke of dictatorship.
Updated: June 2, 7:23 a.m. EDT
Just one hour after Donald Trump announced that he was withdrawing the United States from the global climate accord negotiated in Paris — saying that he was “elected to represent the citizens of Pittsburgh, not Paris” — the new French president, Emmanuel Macron, offered refuge in France to American climate scientists.
In a three-minute address to the American people streamed live from the Élysée Palace, Macron offered hope for the future, and a message of solidarity that seemed to echo those once delivered by American presidents to captive nations suffering under the yoke of dictatorship — or aimed at resistance fighters in an occupied country.
“Tonight, I wish to tell the United States, France believes in you — the world believes in you,” Macron said. “I know that you are a great nation. I know your history — our common history.”

“To all scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs, responsible citizens who were disappointed by the decision of the president of the United States, I want to say that they will find in France a second homeland,” he continued. “I call on them: come and work here with us. To work together on concrete solutions for our climate, our environment. I can assure you, France will not give up the fight.”
At the end of his remarks, the French president made it crystal clear that his message was intended as a rebuke of not just his American counterpart’s decision, but his entire worldview.
“I call on you to remain confident,” Macron said, standing in front the of the flags of both France and the European Union. “We will succeed, because we are fully committed, because wherever we live, whoever we are, we all share the same responsibility: Make Our Planet Great Again.”

Macron’s social media team made sure that closing rejoinder to Trump and Trumpism was not missed by those lacking the strength or the stamina to make it to the third minute of his speech.
— Emmanuel Macron (@EmmanuelMacron) June 1, 2017
Trump later responded in a typically sophisticated, mature fashion.
MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 2, 2017
Reuters reports that before his speech, Macron told Trump in a brief phone call on Thursday that the climate deal signed in Paris in 2015 could not be renegotiated. He added that while France would continue to work with the United States on other matters, it would no longer discuss climate issues.
The German Chancellor’s spokesman, Steffen Seibert, shared a joint statement from Angela Merkel, Emmanuel Macron and Paolo Gentiloni, the Italian prime minister, which confirmed that “the Paris Agreement cannot be renegotiated, since it is a vital instrument for our planet, societies and economies.”

Trump, whose beef with climate scientists might actually stem from his deep dismay at no longer being allowed to use aerosol hairspray, finished his own remarks by claiming a second time that he was acting to put the interests of Pittsburgh ahead of those of Paris. With this refrain, he was apparently hoping to con ill-informed voters into believing that the international agreement negotiated in the French capital, in which 195 nations agreed to limit fossil-fuel emissions for the global good, was somehow to the unique benefit of the French people.
The same minute Trump finished speaking, however, the mayor of Pittsburgh, Bill Peduto, reminded him that the city had in fact voted overwhelmingly against him.
Fact: Hillary Clinton received 80% of the vote in Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh stands with the world & will follow Paris Agreement @HillaryClinton https://t.co/cibJyT7MAK
— bill peduto (@billpeduto) June 1, 2017
Peduto also confirmed that the city’s government would continue to honor its obligations under the Paris framework.
The mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo — who was forced to respond recently to Trump’s bizarre claim that “Paris is no longer Paris,” because of the threat of terrorism — quickly seconded the Pittsburgh mayor’s affirmation of the role of local governments.
Once again @realDonaldTrump is wrong. #Paris & #Pittsburgh do stand together for the #ParisAgreement #Cities4Climate https://t.co/7HGQ4AQ9Rj
— Anne Hidalgo (@Anne_Hidalgo) June 1, 2017
In his own response to Trump’s decision, Canada’s prime minister, Justin Trudeau, held out hope for working with local governments in American cities and states, while expressing regret at what he called a decision by “the United States federal government.”
We are deeply disappointed that the United States federal government has decided to withdraw from the Paris Agreement.
— Justin Trudeau (@JustinTrudeau) June 1, 2017
“We are all custodians of this world,” Trudeau added, “and that is why Canada will continue to work with the U.S. at the state level, and with other U.S. stakeholders, to address climate change and promote clean growth.”
Subsequent reporting from The Washington Post on what led to Trump’s decision, and his strange focus on France, revealed that the American president has little understanding of how the climate deal works, and was also said to be “irritated and bewildered” that Macron upstaged him with a very firm handshake during their photo-op last week at the U.S. Embassy in Brussels.

— Bloomberg (@business) May 25, 2017
Having seen Trump try to assert physical dominance over other world leaders, by pulling them forcefully towards him while shaking hands for the cameras, Macron told a French newspaper that he had come prepared. “My handshake with him, it wasn’t innocent,” Macron said. “We must show that we will not make small concessions, even symbolic ones.”
“Donald Trump, the Turkish president or the Russian president see relationships in terms of a balance of power, Macron added, likening Trump to Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Vladimir Putin. “That doesn’t bother me. I don’t believe in diplomacy by public abuse, but in my bilateral dialogues I won’t let anything pass.”
Thank you for this.
Refuge for the safest politically correct scientists on earth.
Wanna see real professional guts? Judith Curry, Ph.D. et al. risking ostracism, career suicide, vandalism, physical assault and threats of RICO targeting for only suggesting that, as with all other scientific theories, global warming/climate-change is not ‘settled science, that much of the source data being withheld is suspect and political terminology (“scientific consensus” “climate deniers”) does not belong in scientific debate…
Btw, that ’97? of scientists agree’ number is somewhat ‘over-optimistic.’ Google it…
two words, Maunder Minimum, and Marcon says “let them eat snow”
And as far as Macron offering refuge to climate scientists, what they need refuge from is all the political pressure from the government & environmental nutjobs. Science is 95% government funded, including the IPCC, an arm of the U.N. Any “scientist” who expresses doubt about any facet of the great global warming narrative faces loss of gov’t funding and therefore tyranny from his fellow “scientists”. If there is no problem, there is no need to study it so closely, and no need for gov’t to “protect” us from the non-problem. Another good thing to google is “the right climate stuff” – a group of former NASA Apollo program engineers and scientists who are skeptical, as any real scientist should be. Retirement makes them not as prone to pressure.
Google Milankovitch cycles. That’s what causes the greatest temperature variations. Just 20,000 yrs ago Michigan was underneath an ice sheet 2 miles thick. Earth enters a new glacial period every 100,000 to 150,000 years. A look at a chart of earth’s temperature over millions of years shows that we are about to peak on warming and enter another period of glaciation. So even if against all odds, the U.N were able to slow global warming, we would be shooting ourselves in the foot. We probably need all the global warming we can get right now.
E. Macron!!!!! Asylum to american environment scientists, yes. Le’ts not forget those who contributed to democracy and give Assange, Snowden and any other whistleblower an asylum in France.
All refugees are welcome!!!!!!!! Stop deportation and France’s participation in war. Stop to produce terror while saying you are fighting it.
I want to see that little shit Macron get punched by Trump next time they are together. He is a weasel cuck of the worst sort. Loser.
ALL THESE WORLD LEADERS ARE PISSED AT TRUMP, NOT BECAUSE WE PULLED OUT OF THE BS PARIS ACCORD, BUT BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT GETTING OUR TAXPAYERS MONEY. WITHOUT OUR MONEY THE ACCORD IS NOTHING MORE THAN HOT AIR! BYE!!!!!!
HELLLLLLLL NO, and be blown up by all the muslim terrorists living in france? Yeah no I rather starve in my country than move to france. I am not even visiting france. NO WAY! Soon you will be the first Muslim country in western Europe. Good luck with that liberal IDIOT. Besides, our scientists will always have work in the USA. We actually have several French scientists at the University where I work here in the good’old USA
Put the American refugees in the same camps as the Muslim refugees, what could possibly go wrong?
I am convinced the decision was based on hairspray. It makes perfect sense. ?
impossible to take your article serious due to the childish remarks against others.
Good luck.
This whole issue academic. Supply and demand will solve this as solar power becomes cheaper and more available there will be far less demand for fossil fuels. This IS going to happen over the next 20 years.
Just as it should. These Prog/socialists are dense…
Didn’t France already have an immigration problem ? Americans will love the LePen and Melenchon voters, together about half of the population, as they are used to only having extreme choices like the Hillarys, Trumps, McCains, Schiffs….etc.
To the mayor of Pittsburgh, Trump won Pennsylvania. Plus, cities and states can’t enter into a treaty. For that matter, neither can a PTUS without 67% of Senators.
Marcon is a big mouthed idiot.
…..oh!…..type error, right? ….You meant to write “TRUMP” not Macron…..
….’cept TRUMP has a small mouth which looks a lot like another part or his anatomy……..
T-shirt going viral in 3, 2, 1.. http://rdbl.co/2sxiTgA
eh. Paris accords have no effect on climate and only a significant negative economic effect on American middle and lower class. No benefit, lots of harm. Only a fool would stay involved in this nonsense. Our rate of technological advancement is significantly improving our environmental impact; Paris accord will only slow that progress, keeping rate of damage higher for longer. It’s nothing more than celebrity circle jerking.
Why should anyone in Flint MI, Ferguson, MO, or anyone else in any of 10,000 other little hellholes in America worry about the Paris accords. Who gives a fuck if humanity is wiped out by climate change in 500 years? If you can stomach a world that will poison, shoot, bomb, starve, incarcerate and murder thousands and thousands a year, just why are future generations so important?
Maybe Elon Musk cares. So too, Al Gore but the wretched of the world don’t give a fuck about life 500 years from now, or the Paris accords.
Not to worry. Trump and his idiocy will be just a blip in history within a couple of years. He will not destroy us.
France talking smack? Their tanks have 16 gears 15 go in reverse and 1 for drive in case the enemy gets behind them. France would be speaking German if not for the U.S.A
I think you are wrong. We would be speaking German if the Russians didn’t help us.
Nonsence. If not for the US western Europe would have been toast, leaving Germany only one front to fight on, the Russian front. The USSR was only too happy to let Germany split Europe with them and signed an agreement stating so.
Check your history, Russia was already kicking Germany’s ass before the US entered the war. Germany thought they’d find a push-over in the Soviet Union, same as they had in Poland. They didn’t bring ANY winter equipment to the fight, thinking they’d be done before winter hit. They were VERY much mistaken, and lost many men to hypothermia, and starvation. The US didn’t defeat Germany, the Soviet Union did. We helped to free much of western Europe, true, but it was Russia that rolled into Berlin, and all the way to the Elbe River, and put an end to the war.
“Check your history, Russia was already kicking Germany’s ass before the US entered the war.”
Facts:
When did the US declare war on Germany/Italy? December 11, 1941
When were German troops at the Eastern Front at that time? Surrounded the Russian city of Leningrad, occupied Odessa, a few kilometers from Moscow
When did the battle of Stalingrad begin? Aug 1942
When did Germans surrender in Stalingrad? Feb 1943
You claimed “Russia was already kicking Germany’s ass before the US entered the war”. The US entered the war in December 1941 when German troops surrounded the city of Leningrad and were a few kilometers from Moscow. That was 8 months before the battle of Stalingrad and more than a year before German troops surrendered in Stalingrad.
Did you say ” check your history “?
Clearly, Stalingrad in 1942 was the biggest single turning point in the war, if one needed to be identified. So I absolutely agree with you, but there were many other factors.
Had the Americans not engaged Japan in the Pacific, you might have seen Japan sweep further into Russia at the same time the Germans attacked from the west; this could have changed the outcome significantly since part of the reason for Germany’s eventual defeat in Russia stemmed from vast reserves of manpower Stalin summoned from the Eastern regions of Russia; surprisingly the Soviets and Japanese did not fight until very late in the war, although Japan occupied large stretches of China.
And don’t discount the role Britain played in keeping the Nazis at bay during the middle period of the war. Bombing raids from the time mainland Europe was fully occupied to the time the Americans landed in Normandy in 1944 were ceaseless and this occupied a lot of Germany’s resources. There were also numerous special operations raids on Germany by Brits and Norwegians during this time.
Totally on the right side of History. I applaud your bravery. I just hope your neo-liberal policies aren’t harsh to the French people.
Who’s never won a war & is THE FIRST to surrender? Oh yeah…
Yes we can in french is : Oui, on peut !
Can I move to France? Please?
Yes. Or Germany. Since the election they’ve been fast tracking Americans.
Are you serious? How so?
See yah!!
Buh bye
I’m not a fan of Marcon – too neo-lib. However, he is on the right side of history on this one. For any Yankee scientists out there who wish to flee the formerly-United States, please consider Canada first – many of us speak French AND the fishing’s better!
*haha* True dat. (I’m starting to feel like a stalker)
I would consider Canada but as a retired software engineer your country will not allow me to emigrate, even if I am financially independent…
Could maybe un-retire for a a while..?
I looked it up and there’s some wiggle room, but whatever. None of my business anyway, right? So many exciting places to see in the world.
Only northeastern Americans are Yankees. That leaves at 3/4 of the states
Scientists live in a free world and are extremely priviligized as compared with for instance refugees.
And instead of talking about the weather, they could also talk about these wars in the ME, that are supported, amongst others, by the French and US government.
Stop those wars by for instance protesting as a scientist against war in the Middle East. That could help. Because if the US cannot steal their fuel from the ME anymore, because scientists succesfully protested against these wars, the US government may decide to fund green fuel alternatives. Which is good for science. And for the climate too.
But all scientists protest about is protesting for science. Which means: protesting to get their pay check every month.
That scientists are compared to refugees by Macron and Mackey is yet more evidence that they live in this world, but is another world. Which also apllies to most of their science, which most often turns out to be false in replication studies.
Sad!
They are not talking about the “weather”.
Too long. Let me summarize for you.
“You cannot talk about any bad thing unless you also mention MY pet bad thing, or else you are a bad person!”
Or, even shorter, “LOOK OVER THERE!!”
Good PR..that’s all it is..meanwhile Mackey’ forte , “Climate Deniers” , is in lockstep with his native MSM..not to hip and interested in Clinate Science because “climate deniers” are easier to cover..
Guess it’ll be “freedom fries” for a while again.
So this means what? Fast tracking work visas for US climate scientists? What about others who while they may not be climate scientists they’re fighting to stop idiots like Trump from destroying the world?
I’m a fan of “The Intercept” but stopped reading after I saw this sentence, “Trump, whose beef with climate scientists might actually stem from his deep dismay at no longer being allowed to use aerosol hairspray” – turned this potential for good writing and an opportunity to present both sides into a childish display of blind one-sided bias opinion hit piece against America’s decision to step away from a Treaty. I didn’t know the Intercept is now the New York Times? How does taking bias jabs sprinkled with Twitter cutouts represent a reasonable display of deep forensic or factual journalism? I don’t mind that you guys lean mostly left but I expected much better quality on this hot topic.
It isn’t snark or hyperbole. From the article:
“After being presented with a miner’s helmet by the West Virginia Coal Association, an industry group that endorsed him, Trump briefly put it on to do a broad impression of a miner digging with a shovel. He then removed it and asked the crowd if the helmet had messed up his hair, which triggered a lengthy tangent on the good old days, before aerosols were phased out.
“My hair look okay?” Trump asked the crowd. “Got a little spray — give me a little spray.”
“You know, you’re not allowed to use hairspray anymore because if affects the ozone. You know that, right?” he said to laughter. “I said, ‘You mean to tell me’ — ’cause you know hairspray’s not like it used to be, it used to be real good,” he added, to more laughs. “Give me a mirror. But no, in the old days, you put the hairspray on, it was good. Today, you put the hairspray on, it’s good for 12 minutes, right?”
“I said, ‘Wait a minute — so if I take hairspray and if I spray it in my apartment, which is all sealed, you’re telling me that affects the ozone layer?’” “‘Yes.’” I say, no way, folks. No way!”
“No way!” he added to cheers. “That’s like a lot of the rules and regulations you people have in the mines, right? It’s the same kind of stuff.”
You silly Americans
To paraphrase Lennie Bruce
Your left is the civilized world’s right
He’s petty. He’s vengeful. He said this on May 5, 2016:
Give me a little spray. … You know you’re not allowed to use hairspray anymore because it affects the ozone, you know that, right? I said, you mean to tell me, cause you know hairspray’s not like it used to be, it used to be real good. … Today you put the hairspray on, it’s good for 12 minutes, right. … So if I take hairspray and I spray it in my apartment, which is all sealed, you’re telling me that affects the ozone layer? “Yes.” I say no way folks. No way. No way. That’s like a lot of the rules and regulations you people have in the mines, right, it’s the same kind of stuff.
That’s not bias. It’s legitimate speculation based on his character and what he’s said and now his actions.
Macron and Merkel are the new leaders of the free world by looking forward and facing our problems with logic. Trump is defunding scientists in this country plain and simple. If you don’t have a job or salary you have to go somewhere. It benefits France and Europe to accept highly educated migrants, but it damages the US, maybe even turning it into a 3rd world dump. Trump is already firing scientists out of the EPA, and turning that agency into a protective force for smokestacks.
Oil is a dying industry, and Trump is trying to revive a dead horse, and by doing so will damage the economy of the US. When we do get a reasonable president, we will be struggling to catch up.
“Make Our Planet Great Again.” Something we should all strive for, not just parrot. Sadly, the only way to do this short of an Apocalypse is convince the wealthy elites, “pure” capitalists and banks that green is the new gold. Support a conservation economy, buy green cars, zero houses, green house “grow you own” and green products. Cost a bit more but saves not just money and resources but perhaps the planet in the long run. Environment groups should form green buyers clubs to get better prices and used the profits to support environmental causes. If you cannot bet them, join them and change them. They have made our elected representatives members of their money club, turning the tables and use our buying power for good is fair play.
The Paris agreement was meaningless anyway. Just 31 pages of lawyer speak to legally cover their asses when the world burns. No talk of actual causes of AGW nor how to fix. Typical political clout.
Don’t be too enthusiastic. Ask before you run. Study exactly what this communication trick means before you desert your country. Mr Macron, despite his young angelface, is no angel, but the narcisstic puppet of the businessworld. He his about to destroy badly the workers rights, and I heard no word what so ever about environnement and climate change during his campaign. US have Trump and his friends, France has Macron and his friends… business above people.
Compared to worldwide standards , labour contracts are way to rigid on france explaining the 10% unemployment rate in France . We decided to pay well unemployed citizens instead of the précarity experienced by our anglo-saxon fellow workers . Macron wants to get labour laws in line with west advanced economic countries . With regards to greens issues , it is true that his pro Europe philosophy was is main mantra during his presidential campaign , and nothing substantial was said with regards to environmental issues ( which is viewed in France as a leftist argument ) . Yet , the french minister for the environmental transition is Nicola Hulot , who is very popular in France and has been proven to be an efficient activist his whole life . Hulot has been approached for the last 15 years by the different french president and never accepted a mandate . So it is quite a score that macron managed to get him into the Élysée !
>Gabs: You are right, Hulot – a very capable andwellknown specialist of environnmental problems – has accepted this time. Time for him, at his age, to try? Illusion? I don’t know. Macron has obviously chosen him for decoration. Their views are so deeply opposite that I don’t think he will last for more than… 6 months? Hulot is not the man capable of accepting dubious compromises. It will be very interesting to observe which one of them will be stronger. Not much hope for Hulot. He is not brutal enough, I think, and too intellectually honest.
Absolutely ! The IMF Micron mouthpiece.
Absolutely, Bill McKibben and his well funded organization are staying put..for it’s greener still for the cash cow in the middle of the “deniers pasture than it is in a saturated bog full of competing frogs all croaking at once
His strategy is to try and gain approval from foreigners and present a pleasant face to the rest of the world, even if he is disliked by half of the people who live in France. Thank you for having pointed out his ruse. The fact that he has appointed former nuclear lobbyist Edouard Philippe as his prime minister shows his true stance on environmental policy. In the end Macron can say whatever he wants, but what he ends up doing will determine if France and her people are impoverished or live securely.
Perhaps you know more than Wiki, but Macron’s Wiki page states that he was an active proponent of climate change prior to the 2015 UN Climate Change Conference.
2 things
#1. The Paris agreement which is the source of this energy draining rift
is not worth the energy BECAUSE that agreement was primarily another
in the ever-growing number of agreements which have postponed,
sabotaged,
and avoided
what really needs to be done.
The Climate Agreements have all been deliberately weakened
by every democrat and republican administration since Tokyo.
#2. If the mayor of Pittsburgh is thinking that a majority of voters
supporting Hillary Clinton is the same as opposing Trump, he is
delusional. Trump and Clinton are both working AGAINST
a healthy environment and they are both corporate criminals
who lie and deliberately mislead in their shared love of
corporate capitalist global domination for private profits.
Thanx Clark, for saying what needs saying. The “Paris Accords” were basically pure fluff meant to appease the masses by pretending that leadership cared about global warming. Until there’s a real effort to address this, as in WW II, when everybody was on board together, Earth will continue to be murdered. Perhaps Trump’s ignorance will inspire real action, but I seriously doubt it.
May I just say (as a French researcher) that many of my brilliant young climatologists colleagues do not have any chance at getting a position in France. Many of them, hard working, 35 years old, only have one year extremely poorly paied post-docs. This is mostly because of the long-term budget cuts imposed by Macron’s actual secretaries/councils/entourage from the right and the left wing combined. Maby such a short video does plays a role on the diplomatic side – I can’t tell- but in terms of actual research outputs or in terms of consideration for actual researcher both on the physics of climate or on climate change impacts, this is pure com: does’nt cost anything, does not presage a real investment plan in research… And it makes me a little angry.
Did they ever figure out if Macron had foreign bank accounts?
Did we ever figure out how much money Trump and his team of flying monkeys owe the Russians?
Great. Our world leaders are reduced to having pissing contests over the assertion of physical dominance via handshakes while the world burns. Macron is no better than Trump for stooping to that childish level. And Mackey approves instead of noting how fucking adolescent it all is. :-s

How long or if at all will US mainstream media report on what the French President offered??
They may. Of course, in general, the US establishment media frowns on those seeking to leave the US for greater freedom.
It is certainly likely that it will get more coverage than this news from France, which prove Mr. Macron and the mainstream media to be liars. (Correction and retraction, please, Mr. Mackey.)

Scientists’ will flee US for sanctuary in France.
I went to a packed, town meeting last night. There was overwhelming support to simply by pass the Feds as the private sector continues to develop GREEN technology, policies and creativity.
Putin wants to break the strong alliance between the U.S. and the E.U. and is using his puppet (Trump) to do just that.
Puppet-In-Chief doing his globalist bosses’ bidding…that’s what he’s there for. The manufactured climate change scare (siear for lord monkton) is as important as the synthetic war on terror for the rise of the new world order. The Hegelian Dialectic applied. To the tee. And the sheeple cheer.
Very happy that Trump said no to the climate charade.
Until somebody can come up with a credible explanation why 0.04% of CO2 in the atmosphere is so toxic, I’ll stick with Mr Trump on this one.
Also, I would like to see an experiment that shows how temperature rises while CO2-levels rise with a whopping 33% from 0.03% to 0.04% (parts of CO2 in the earth’s atmosphere).
Thanks.
The truth is, that there is still very much we dont know about climate and the atmosphere.
Liberals who deny science when it goes against the narrative, clutch their pearls and feign outrage about the “anti science” opposition to the Paris Accord.
Global warming has become a religious item of faith for them.
“Liberals who deny science……”. Right those goshdarn libs are just walking around denying all the science. All of it! They just deny it! Repubs especially from Kansas recognize correctly that climate change is a Chinese hoax.
Sure, but the truth also is that the key parts of what you claim is not known is very well understood.
Your earlier comment gave the impression that you know something about science. You should also know that in the beta-sciences, nothing will make a scientist happier than to disprove a theory and publish this in a refereed journal. This will give them access to grants. You also know that less than one percent of refereed articles are by climate warming deniers, because they can’t prove their claims. I think you know this and have no other option left than the lame claims about religion and liberals.
Well stated.
Of course. All the billionaire scientists are the problem and should be viewed with skepticism. The multi-national companies, polluting the oceans and killing the fish, they’re our real friends.
Use the google and educate yourself
Aaaahhhh yes.
Believe the 99% of the people who have committed their lives to science and it’s pursuit OR believe in a total ignoramus who sees conspiracies around every corner who knows exactly zero on the topic.
Great decision making skills you have there.
Tell me, would you make the same decision if someone you loved was diagnosed with a serious illness? Believe the doctor or believe the wise-ass know-nothing at the bar who shoots off his idiot mouth?
I find it ironic that you demand proof when it’s absolutely foreseeable that no matter what is presented to you, you will simply dismiss it with the ignorant statement of, “well, I don’t believe you.”
There is a reason why the word “stupid” exists. It’s reserved for those who simply refuse fact without any reason other than to simply say, I don’t believe it.
AGREED. Well said. The blissful ignorance is getting frustrating.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Appeal_to_the_stone
His type of argument is known as Appeal To The Stone whereby he simply states a fact is absurd without providing evidence of absurdity. Notice how he then puts the burden of proof back on his interlocutor to again provide proof of something already known.
This type of person is merely a Troll and not wanting to engage in thoughtful discussion, but rather looks to just incite others with his own brand of absurdity.
This effect is very well understood; pretending otherwise is ignorant. It is well known that without the “green house effect”, the earth would be too cold to inhabit. Venus and Mars also require this effect in order to properly model their temperatures. The first is very hot. Why? You guessed it, lots of green house gas; and of course it is closer to the sun, but that is not enough to do it alone.
Your comment is stupid. Almost nobody believes what you are saying, ands you are not going to win any converts with such nonsense.
Why reply with arrogance? Just reply to my question with facts. State the reasons why 0.04% CO2 is significantly different from 0.02% or 0.03%?
I don’t have to “win any converts”, I just demand that such far-reaching predictions should be backed up with verifiable science.
It should be possible to build a model where you can prove that an increase from 0.03% CO2 to 0.04% CO2 would rise the temperature as much as they say.
Just point me to this experiment.
In my experience condensed water has a much greater insulating effect than any gas.
Yes, that’s it! Grow gills and we’ll all be just fine. Love your logic here. lol…..
Why don’t you put your head in toilet water and take a deep breath.
Translation: I’m not here to debate any facts because I know I cannot win a debate in that manner. So, I’m simply going to keep denying anything you say until you concede.
Yep, it is exactly that kind of thing that the atmospheric models do. What you think that these estimates are based on? Oh, wait, I forgot. You are a Trump supporter, and believe any nonsense he says.
Toxicity is not the issue here.
Experiment. You are living in such an experiment.
scientists have already come up with a credible explanation, whether you believe it or not. and a cyanide pill is much smaller than you are, so i guess you would argue that it can’t hurt you.
“Also, I would like to see an experiment that shows how temperature rises while CO2-levels rise with a whopping 33% from 0.03% to 0.04% (parts of CO2 in the earth’s atmosphere).”
I’m not sure that sentence means anything but okay, if I understood it correctly, you’re asking for Arrhenius’ experiment …which dates back to late 19th century
http://www.rsc.org/images/Arrhenius1896_tcm18-173546.pdf
I hope the climate psuedo scientists take macron up on this offer. Maybe we can get rid of some of the endless amount of people claiming they are scientists but aren’t even close to being one.
Lol at anyone who thinks this is a serious offer, and not just Macron virtue-signaling on an international scale.
1: You can’t just “move to Europe”. They’ve drastically limited the number of immigrants they’re taking, except for if you have a concrete job offer.
2: Wages are in some cases higher than in the US, but cost of living is higher too. European taxes are also high for Americans.
3: There aren’t as many STEM opportunities available as in the US. Also less funding opportunities compared to what the federal government offers.
4: And probably most importantly: Unless you speak French, forget about it. Not just in every day life, but also professionally. French Academia is like US academia in the 70ies. A lot of older, white males who believes everyone in France should speak French as a matter of principle.
1) You can just move to Europe, actually. Being US-American, You could enroll in a German University for a semester fee of 500€ (which pays for free public transport & public health insurance) and just study here. With classes in English language. You’d have to do some paperwork, allright.
2 & 3 ) Taxes may be higher, but your future kids will have basically free University. Or paid vocational training years if they choose to learn a craft-career instead of an academic career. And cheap, universal health insurance. And social security insurance.
4) The French may be a bit picky about language. But then, learning a language isn’t that hard. Every somewhat educated person in my country speaks at least 2 or 3 languages. Many EU-nations learn a lot more languages.
There aren’t as many STEM opportunities available as in the US. Also less funding opportunities compared to what the federal government offers.
Yes, well, Trump is working on changing that as well.
Trump’s Budget Proposal Cuts NIH Funding by 20 Percent
The irony here is that it will likely be members of his own party who thwart him in this aspect of his anti-science agenda.

The Ebola outbreaks of recent history were a shot across the bow. We can either invest in those things that will help us stay healthy – as opposed to the war machines that bring nothing but death – or we can all die in waves like we did during the 1918 flu pandemic.
In an increasingly interconnected world, where emerging diseases – some of them re-emerging now that the tundra is melting and corpses of people who died of infectious diseases in eras past are reappearing and re-infecting living populations – the foolishness of mantras like “We’re fighting them there, so we don’t have to fight them here.” and the misappropriation of our tax dollars for such things, will leave everyone vulnerable, no matter how much money they have.
The only thing working in our favor seems to be that some Republicans understand that, while you may be able to buy better healthcare if you have money, it won’t protect you in a pandemic. Especially one that causes the rest of the infrastructure to go belly up.
The cost of living may be higher here in Europe but we also don’t have to buy health insurance like you do nor fork over a lot of money just to go to the doctor, nursery school is free, universities are cheaper. The economy is different for sure but less cutthroat and life is much less precarious, and it seems perfectly reasonable to expect one to speak French in France. I think Americans expect people to speak English over there, right?
They would but believe it or not many people there especially Trump supporters think their language is called ”American”.,,(which explains so much)
Never occurred to them that it is English.
People who support action on climate change always claim they are trying to save the planet. But they are really just trying to save the human species. We can now construct robots who can live in an environment of sulfuric acid at temperatures exceeding 200 degrees Fahrenheit – perfectly adapted to a future Earth. As a side benefit, they will also more be more intelligent than human beings and will work for lower wages. So the future is bright as far as I’m concerned.
The US needs climate scientists who will work to make this utopian vision a reality. The rest can go to France and drown their sorrows, at least while the French climate is still conducive to growing grapes.
“Old Europe” is young again with Macron, while Trump’s America is getting outdated, avoiding to face the challenges of the future. Does he sign for the Fall of the American Empire ?
Very good brief !
His drama teacher nanny taught him this great pink panther impression when he was 15 and he is still doing it.
Micron is just aiming to capture the newly elusive Elon Musk, for his own.
Voila mes chéries, une milliardaire, notre milliardaire….
So Micron, the Troika, IMF, and Goldman Sachs lieutenant Bully-in-Chief, (when Mama Merkel’s away) is gonna open his sanctuary doors to climate scientists….
Now ain’t that a kick in the teeth.
No doubt he and his Vichy-crats are gonna draw a Maginot line in the sand, eh?
How does “open his sanctuary doors to climate scientists” constitute a “Maginot line”? Can one say “apples vs oranges”.
Think about it, import wealthy job creators, “stealing” them from the US, into a country that is looking for relatively inexpensive labor to jumpstart (the refugees created by the US). Win, win, reducing any terrorist “plot”. Trifecta! A positive vision for all (of France and the EU).
Once again the isolationist whack-jobs in the US will whistle past the graveyard just like in the years prior to WWII.
[[[ “We are all custodians of this world,” Trudeau added, “and that is why Canada will continue to work with the U.S. at the state level, and with other U.S. stakeholders, to address climate change and promote clean growth.”]]]
Hmmmm…. US was required to reduce “carbon” emissions by 20%. “Carbon” == “CO2″.
China didn’t have to do anything.
How does a wealthy American company reduce its CO2 “footprint” by 20%? And, not cost anything?
ANSWER: Easy. Move your feet. Move to China. Reinstitute Slavery.
(Council on Foreign Relations — history — used to be known as the Privy Council on Foreign Plantations. Slave Council. LOOK IT UP.)
The “accord” doesn’t do a damn thing to “fix” the “climate” — however, it DOES give slavers the right to engage in the slave trade.
zut! alors! it is le earnest commencement speech of an 8th grade lunch room monitor!
All of the real climate scientists support Trump
Only political hacks and liberal arts professors think they can control the climate through trade deals and taxing schemes
LOL! Yet we’re criticized for calling Trump supporters illiterate hillbillies!
Spot On!
Right…. Pruitt guts the EPA and they support him? These posts are from bots set up to muddy any narrative – intercept needs to lose the comment section
That is a great comment. Rarely have so few words so well implied overwhelming emotional immaturity.
LMAO, any scientist that agrees with Trump is either a paid denying hack or a naïve scientist, period.
Okay. And they also have an open invitation to relocate to France.
Great story, Mr Mackey.
You captured the spirit well.
Like a fine, dry wine.
I should congratulate France on getting its unemployment rate under 10% just recently, but I still have some doubt that “come work with us” is actually an open invitation.
It is most encouraging that other important nations in the world are standing by those of us in the U.S. who do not support Trump. I find some relief in what Canada said. America has now slipped into decline. I love what the mayor of Pittsburgh said in response to Trump’s statement about leaving the Paris Accord. People across the world are now seeing us as a decadent and greedy country. I hope that the world community doesn’t give up on us.
Canada says….meanwhile it does extract the most polluting oil from tar sands in the world.
Trudeau is a pretty-faced liar. He actually loves him some pipeline.
https://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/29/world/canada/canada-trudeau-kinder-morgan-pipeline.html?_r=0
I completely agree! 61 US Mayors vowed to fight for the planet and against the dictator that has stolen what was once a great nation! The French President says he is not giving up on the American people and truly show his hatred of Trump. This is the first time I have actually felt like I wasn’t so alone and helpless. Like Hitler – the more hated he is – the more the entire world will work to stop him, I just hope he doesnt’ start a nuclear war! Everything Trump does is illegal – he is a traitor to America and a danger to the entire world. The French President’s statement, along with a joint statement against Trump with Germany and Italy – showed that they are not afraid of him and know that the real America – the truly great nation that we one were will return – we must continue to build our resistance and we won’t be alone in the fight against his tyranny!
nice to know the guy has a classy sense of humour.
that’s funny!
“Trump, whose beef with climate scientists might actually stem from his deep dismay at no longer being allowed to use aerosol hairspray…claim[ed]…that he was acting to put the interests of Pittsburgh ahead of those of Paris. With this refrain, he was apparently hoping to con ill-informed voters into believing that the international agreement negotiated in the French capital, in which 195 nations agreed to limit fossil-fuel emissions for the global good, was somehow to the unique benefit of the French people.
“The same minute Trump finished speaking, however, the mayor of Pittsburgh, Bill Peduto, reminded him that the city had in fact voted overwhelmingly against him.”
Mayor Peduto should also have pointed out to Trump what his city of Pittsburgh USED to be like, before Congress and Richard Nixon created the EPA, steel mills shouldered along the Allegheny, Ohio and Monongahela Rivers, and birds fell dead from coke-blackened skies on even the clearest of days. Trump apparently is eager to have those times return, based on some fanciful belief that it would bring back steel-industry jobs that he could then lay claim to creating.
Trump and his speechwriter sure have a dated conception of Pittsburgh. He must still think it looks like the movie “Deer Hunter” – Slavic hunkys working in steel mills and coal mines, rather than yuppies working for Google and Uber -with all the positive, but also negative things that has brought…. like probably only half of Pittsburgh residents know what a Pierogie is.
Ohlalalala…intelligence!
Macron is smart. Good call on the invitations. It is refreshing to note that the US contribution to global carbon is some 15%. Which means progress can be made by the states, the cities and rest of the world regardless of the orangutang in the white house.
It’s a fact that the private sector has cut emissions even beyond that required by government regulation in many cases. Simple savings on energy and declining returns from the current stock of fossil fuels help. (I can name quite a few AGW deniers who have personally reduced emissions due to energy cost.) Even fracking, with its significant negative impact, has cut the amount of coal use massively.
Once again, the French are put in a situation to rescue America.
Where do I apply? They will pay to relocate me and work on projects where I don’t have to show success and get paid more than I make here in the US! Great!
Oh, he didn’t really mean it. Or I would have to pay my own way, find some employer, get stuck with the higher taxes, probably not get citizenship while the IRS hounds me…
Though I would encourage all the plutocrats in silicon valley and seattle to board their private jets and relocate to France. Tim Cook can have a firesale on Apple’s ring and build one in a Nice-er place. Elon Musk can fill EU roads with Telsas… Oh, they tax rich people higher. I guess they wil stay here.
Many said they would move to Canada if Trump was elected, and add Celebrities. Please move there.
I’m tired of the hypocritical virtue-signalling and posturing. You want the US green companies, engineers, tech, then do what is needed for them to move there and work. Put your money where your mouth is. Follow your principles. If you really have any and aren’t just playing a regulation game.
tz : You seem a little peckish today.
If you are serious about going to France, you should enquire. You could be very surprised. His offer has to be serious or he wouldn’t have made in during a public announcement.
I applied but they are on strike. This summer will be very hot in Paris !
Warning: Aerosol Hairspray Withdrawal can cause dismay and in some cases erratic insanity related behaviors. Hang in there, Donnie, you’ve been through a yuuuuge trauma……(sarcasm off)
lol.
like mad as a hatter….?
i dont imagine that hairspray chems are much different.
My understanding from “his Trump Shuttle employees” is that he used to snort it, or something.
Ah oui, un banquier les dirige
Dear Robert.
Racial inequality field is pretty crowded here in California.
I want another PC field to study.
If I send you my application, can you forward it to Mrs Macron?
I gather you have good connections to him :)
I don’t speak French but I think I can learn.
I hear they have good looking bitches over there and not shaving their underarms is not too bad in my view. I can take it, if she’s at least somewhat good looking.
I need to get the fuck out of here Mackey and I can’t even get your job, get my drift?
Please help pal, I voted for Hillary!
Do I really need to learn French? I’ll rather not. Please advise Obi-Wan Mackey :)
When I get rich I promise to invite you to my French Riviera home!
