U.S. Falling Into the Islamic State’s Trap

There are many reasons the U.S. shouldn’t go to war with the Islamic State — and the best may be that it's exactly what they want us to do.

Kerry arrived in Cairo for a short visit of less than a day to discuss how Egypt can help in the fight against the Islamic State group. He has been on a regional trip to garner support for President Barack Obama's initiative to assemble a coalition of nations to go after the militant group. Kerry heads to Paris next for a meeting on how to support Iraq in its fight against the Islamic State group, which holds large parts of Iraq and Syria. (AP Photo/Brendan Smialowski, Pool)

The big news out of the new “Global Coalition to Counter ISIL” meeting in Paris was that “several” Arab nations were willing to join President Obama’s latest bombing campaign. “Several Arab states have offered to conduct airstrikes against militants in Iraq,” Anne Gearan and Karla Adam write in the Washington Post: “A lot of this […]

Much is being made of the big turnaround for President Obama, from being a man firmly identified with pulling out of wars to a man launching a new one. And he did, of course, announce a significant escalation of the U.S. military response to the Islamic State. But if you parse his Wednesday night speech […]

Our newspapers of record finally remembered it's their job to point out the flaws in the president's plan to defeat ISIS.

One of the reasons the mainstream media failed to expose the fraud perpetrated by the Bush White House during the run-up to war in Iraq was that it virtually ignored dissenters. And there were some. Even in Washington. Most notably, in September 2002, the late Sen. Ted Kennedy gave a bold, moving speech outlining his view […]

When judging the hyperbole emerging from Capitol Hill about the Islamic State, you must keep this in mind: “The threat ISIS poses cannot be overstated.” That’s what Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the California Democrat who chairs the Senate intelligence committee, wrote in a USA Today op-ed on Sunday. In other words, there can be no hyperbole. […]

So We’re Going to War Again, and All Anyone Wants to Talk About is the Optics?

Dan Froomkin
President Obama has started describing his new strategy to confront the Islamic State, and despite it being a mishmash of wishful thinking and perpetual militarism, the focus of the Washington elites in the press and elsewhere has been almost entirely on the optics: Is he overcoming the perception that he wasn’t doing enough? What will […]
