" Strategic Issues in Latin America " will be presented by the SINIO for Latin America, on Tuesday, 18 October from 11:30 to 13:00 in room 2E099. Advance registration is required. (AREA-1500, Class #1051) Registration: (U//FOUO) Eligible SID students interested in attending this brown-bag session should enroll for class number 1051 using Peoplesoft. Enrollment will be first come, first served. In case of difficulties with Peoplesoft an email can be sent to Roland Recker ) with the following information, and include the course name (AREA 1500 -- "Strategic Issues in Latin America"), your name, SSN and organization. Course Overview: (U//FOUO) Many of the challenges facing Latin America today have significant long-term implications for U.S. interests. Will Venezuela remain a significant source of oil for the United States? What are the implications of having Chavez as Castro's ideological successor? Does the recent trend of electing socialist leaders in South American countries represent an irreconcilable difference with the United States? Will it adversely impact economic relations? Does the rise in populist movements in Central and South America herald a regionalization of the FARC/ELN insurgencies? Assuming success in Colombia, how will narcotics trafficking in the Andean region change? China has become greatly engaged in Latin America -- what are the potential ramifications to U.S. influence in the region?
