SCS Mosul and Coalition Forces Team Up to Neutralize Major Insurgent Cell

SUMMARY

NSA's Special Collection Service in Mosul helped coalition forces 'neutralize' an Iraqi insurgent cell. Once captured, an operational commander identified his successor, who was caught less than two weeks later. A camera recovered during his capture contained images of senior facilitators and terrorist operations, intercepted communications revealed.

(TS//SI/REL) SCS Mosul played a key role in helping Coalition forces track and eventually capture six extremists, neutralizing a major Iraqi insurgent cell. On 8 June 2006, operational commander was apprehended and, within 24 hours of his capture, he identified his successor, . (TS//SI//REL) Employing excellent analytical capabilities, SCS Mosul was already tracking and had reported on his plans to conduct four operations over the coming week, allowing Coalition forces to successfully locate and capture on 19 June 2006. As a result of the captures, mortar attacks, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and suicide bomber attacks around Mosul have decreased. This reporting expedited exploitation efforts on the confiscated camera, which revealed images of senior facilitators and footage of recent "weddings" -- code for terrorist operations.
