SIGINT Reporting Leads to Rescue at Sea of 128 Desperate Migrants

SUMMARY

In October 2006, analysts from the International Crime and Narcotics human smuggling unit reported on signals intelligence indicating that a fishing boat illegally transporting Peruvian and Chinese migrants was adrift 200 miles off the Costa Rican coast. An international effort ensued and the migrants were rescued. In December, Peruvian press announced the arrests of at least six smugglers in Peru involved in the case.
