Christopher Horner, an attorney who claims that the earth is cooling, is known within the scientific community for hounding climate change researchers with relentless investigations and public ridicule, often deriding scientists as “communists” and frauds.
Horner is a regular guest on Fox News and CNN, and has been affiliated with a number of think tanks and legal organizations over the last decade. He has called for investigations of climate scientists affiliated with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and NASA, and inundated climate researchers at major universities across the country with records requests that critics say are designed to distract them from their work.
New court documents reveal one source of Horner’s funding: big coal.
Last Thursday’s bankruptcy filing of Alpha Natural Resources, one of the largest coal companies in America, includes line items for all of the corporation’s contractors and grant recipients. Among them are Horner individually at his home address, as well as the Free Market Environmental Law Clinic, where he is a senior staff attorney.
Reached by phone today about his relationship with Alpha Natural Resources, Horner said he would get back with us. David W. Schnare, director of the Free Market Environmental Law Clinic, subsequently emailed a response neither confirming nor denying that Horner or his organizations have received funding from the coal giant. Schnare said that “nearly all” his organization’s donors “request that we not disclose their names” and noted that under IRS regulations it is not required to do so. Schnare also stated that “the sources of our funding have no role in which cases” his organization prosecutes.
The Alpha Natural Resources filing corroborates the suggestion in a recent email from chief executives of major coal firms that they are underwriting Horner’s current work.
In early June this year, the Coal & Investment Leadership Forum, a trade show, sent this message to its email list: “As the ‘war on coal’ continues, I trust that the commitment we have made to support Chris Horner’s work will eventually create great awareness of the illegal tactics being employed to pass laws that are intended to destroy our industry.” The email was signed by Alliance Resource Partners’ Joe Craft III, Alpha Natural Resources’ Kevin Crutchfield, Drummond Company’s Gary Drummond, Arch Coal’s John Eaves and United Coal Co.’s Jim McGlothlin.
Horner has played a prominent role in the climate science debate for many years, though he has failed to uncover wrongdoing.
In 2009, thousands of emails were hacked from climate researchers at the University of East Anglia. Horner quickly blogged that the “blue-dress moment may have arrived” and began appearing on media outlets to claim that the emails revealed “admissions of falsifying results, collaborating to subvert and violate the laws” in what he dubbed “Climategate.”
“Climategate” became a media phenomenon, with prominent politicians declaring that the emails revealed that climate change is a “hoax.” The Koch organization Americans for Prosperity traveled to international climate change negotiations in Copenhagen in 2009 and proclaimed that the emails revealed a “scandal.”
Six official investigations later cleared the University of East Anglia scientists of accusations of any wrongdoing.
Horner has filed numerous records requests for personal emails from climate scientists and litigated to force universities to comply with his requests. Horner continued his investigations of climate scientists earlier this year by filing a records request with John Byrne, distinguished professor of energy climate policy at the University of Delaware. The request was made on behalf of the Free Market Environmental Law Clinic and the Energy & Environment Legal Institute, where Horner is a senior fellow.
“He has been instrumental in orchestrating the attacks on climate scientists over the past decade in the form of vexatious and frivolous FOIA demands, efforts to force scientists to turn over all of their personal email,” says Dr. Michael Mann, a climate scientist targeted by Horner.
Horner has also often cast scientists as villains. He claimed on Alex Jones’ program “Infowars” that climate science is a backdoor strategy for enacting “global governance.” On Fox News, Horner mysteriously claimed that White House science adviser John Holdren is “if not borderline communist — communist.”
In an interview with The Intercept, Dr. Gretchen T. Goldman of the Union of Concerned Scientists said it is “reprehensible” to learn that coal companies are “funding the harassment of scientists.”

No wonder lawyers have a bad reputation
Meanwhile back on planet Earth: http://www.independent.co.uk/environment/climate-change/climate-change-2015-will-be-the-hottest-year-on-record-by-a-mile-experts-say-10477138.html
All this underhandedness, this lying, this unethical behavior…it is disgusting, to put it mildly.
What does the human race have to do with the environmental shift?
1. We love to drive our vehicles. An RV fill up uses 200 liters of fuel and gets 5.6 km/liter. Let’s go camping a 1000 kilometers away with a 2000+ km round trip.
2. Are we having fun during rush hour in every major city?
3. Most of our electricity comes from coal and nuclear power plants.
4. We strip mine forests to mine the coal.
5. We do not replant the forests near the rate we strip mine them.
6. Fact is, we rarely if ever look in the mirror, to see who is causing the most damage to the environment.
Rather than putting all the blame on the corporations can we for a few minutes look at the consumer? In other words bring it closer to home. The climate industry blasts mathematical formulas at the citizens in every article, report and book.
You do not require a climate industry spokesperson to do the math. The countries that create most of the pollution are also the biggest consumers of the end products. 10 years ago I changed the way I was consuming after opening a package containing a new hard drive. Thankfully we have an excellent recycling program in my city. It’s simpler than we are told to cut our personal consumption. The climate industry hit us with the same sensational headlines nailing the corporations.
Are you still refusing to look in the mirror?
Can you really count on the consumer? I’d argue the opposite. It’s like expecting poverty to be solved by hoping people donate to charity. Systemic problems aren’t solved that way.
So, just to be clear…An industry battling for its life covertly finances an attorney to attack and smear honest and upstanding climate scientist such as Michael E. -A Disgrace to His Profession- Mann. Apparently this violates the Marquess of Queensberry rules and negates everything he ever did or said. Quelle horreur!
Gentle folk. You do not see the forest for the trees.
Chapter One: George Soros throws his finances behind Obama.
Chapter Two: The impartial EPA bankrupts the American coal industry.
Chaper Three: George Soros buys trillions of dollars worth of coal for pennies on the dollar.
Chapter Four (still to be written): EPA discovers coal is not that bad after all.
You thought you were watching Plato’s Academy, but this is Game of Thrones. Cheers
Did George Soros also travel back in time to 1896 so he could have Svante Arrhenius write his paper on climate sensitivity to CO2 doubling?
George Soros is hiding in my cupboards, the woodpile, the attic. Aaaaahhh he’s some kind of Liberal, Billionaire Goblin. Someone help, preferably the Conservative Super Hero Billionaire Koch Brats, YAY!
Humans’ use of fossil fuels, and the resulting carbon dioxide air emissions, has no material effect on climate. Human activities cause only about 3% of all carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions to the atmosphere. Most of the rest are the result of decomposing plant material. CO2 is in equilibrium. It is a weak greenhouse gas in theory, but its actual climate effects are nullified by stronger forces.
The theory of fossil fuels-caused climate change is a false premise for any regulation.
1. CO2 does not materially affect the Earth’s climate; and,
2. Fossil fuels-caused climate change is a false premise for regulation of CO2 emissions; and,
3. Nature already effectively captures and sequesters CO2 as mineral carbonate; and,
4. Climate cycles are natural, and caused by forces other than CO2; and,
5. Human activities generate about 3% of CO2 emissions. Most of the rest are from rotting plants.
Anyone who took 10th grade chemistry could arrive at these conclusions using public information sources. Limestone and marble are the most familiar forms of mineral carbonate. CO2 is an essential component of the mineral carbonate (CaCO3). Carbonates are the ultimate repository of atmospheric CO2. Carbonates form in seawater and soils through biological and chemical processes. The formula is CO2 + CaO => CaCO3. Virtually all carbonates are formed from atmospheric CO2 that has been taken up by seawater or soils. You can make magnesium carbonate in your kitchen by mixing carbonated water with milk of magnesia.
Yes, go tell these ‘facts’ of yours to people living in Baoding, China. Or Beijing. Or any of the other over polluted cities on this planet. Tell them that the amount of shit we burn has no whatsoever effect on our daily lives and that all this global warming stories is just pure imagination. Yes, go on believing the the conslusions you’ve made from ‘public information sources.’ Especially after it came out that most of the contributors of those ‘public information sources’ is on some other oil or coal companies payroll.
Haha, You’d better go back to high school before lecturing anyone on the complex equilibrium of aqueous carbonates. Regardless, all of your numbered assertions 1-4 are your wild-eyed opinions and not based on fact. The problem with #5 is that you neglect to mention that natural CO2 emissions are balanced with natural CO2 consumption, and that the extra 3% is accumulating just like compound interest in a bank account. Over the last million years CO2 levels have generally been between 200 and 250 ppm . In the last 100 years they have nearly doubled to 400 ppm. Obviously, nature is unable to effectively capture and sequester CO2, or it would not be accumulating.
10th grade chemistry? I have a BS and MS in physics and atomic physics, and you are absolutely full of it. You can’t cite a single scientific paper that backs up anything you say. We KNOW that the extra 150 ppm of CO2 in the atmosphere was added by us, because it has a different isotope ratio than the carbon cycle CO2.
We also know that this CO2 is trapping more energy on Earth, because the portion of IR escaping to space has been monitored by satellites since 1970, and it has dropped as CO2 has increased.
Great work uncovering this scandal and making it public. Gradually, the whole network of phony science and litigation woven by the fossil fuel industry is being undone. Soon any companies who want to retain credibility will be forced to embrace the science.
In Dec. World Leaders are to meet in Paris to discuss Global Warming, at issue is the amount of greenhouse gases we our emitting, and their plan of action, to Stop this Heating Up and Burning Up our Planet !
Globally we our emitting 40 – 50 Billion Toxic Tons of Carbon Dioxide a Year.
The United States emitted 6.8 Billion Toxic Tons of Carbon Dioxide in 2014
In the 1850s – 1870s parts per million of Carbon in our atmosphere was between 260 – 280.
In the 1980s, there was 350 ppm of Carbon.
2015 – 404 ppm in Our Atmosphere.
We have passed the 1C. baseline Temp Increase !
India, Pakistan, Japan, and the Middle East, Record Breaking, Killing Heat Waves !
The Pacific Ocean is 3 – 8 degrees warmer than Normal.
Massive Whales, Salmon, Starfish, Sea Lions, Sea Stars, Sea Urchins, and Bird Die – Offs !
The Jet Stream is acting like a balloon that is loosing air.
The Arctic Ice and Snow may be gone at the end of this Summer or Next. A Huge Natural Cooler for the Northern Hemisphere, that no man or woman has ever lived without !
The meeting in Paris, should be about Closing the Fossil Fuel Faucet.
“Professor Chris Field is bullshitting the planet. On whether 1.5C is still feasible” Kevin Hester
“The message is already clear, that if the world does want to strive to limit warming to 1.5C or less, we don’t have very much of the carbon budget left.” Professeor Chris Field
“There is no carbon budget any more and 5C is baked in according to both Shell petroleum and the International Energy Authority. ” Kevin Hester
“Chris Field is the founding director of the Carnegie Institution’s department of global ecology and professor for interdisciplinary environmental studies at Stanford University. He is the co-chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) working group two (WGII) and US nominee for the chair of the IPCC.”
With people like this driving the IPCC you can see why we are all done for.” Kevin Hester.
There is No Carbon Budget
California emitted 459 Toxic Tons of Carbon Dioxide in 2014.
Gov Browns call to reduce this to 1990 levels so we can continue to emit over 400 million Toxic Tons a year, will not help us stop or slow down Global Warming and Sea Levels Rising.
“Updates to the 2020 Limit.
Calculation of the original 1990 limit approved in 2007 was revised using the scientifically updated IPCC 2007 fourth assessment report (AR4) global warming potentials, to 431 MMTCO2e. Thus the 2020 GHG emissions limit established in response to AB 32 is now slightly higher than the 427 MMTCO2e in the initial Scoping Plan.” Ca. Gov. Data
What will the Temp. be at 415 ppm ?
“Ice sheets contain enormous quantities of frozen water. If the Greenland Ice Sheet melted, scientists estimate that sea level would rise about 6 meters (20 feet). If the Antarctic Ice Sheet melted, sea level would rise by about 60 meters (200 feet).” National Snow and Ice Data Center.
When will Sea Level Rise to 220 – 300 Feet ? 2020 ? 2025 ? ?
What will the ppm of Carbon be when this happens ?
As of Now, they are talking about capping GHGs at 450 ppm.
What will the Temp. be at 450 ppm ?
We must transition to 100% Renewable Energy
Implement a California Residential and Commercial Feed in Tariff.
California Residential Feed in Tariff would allow homeowners to sell their Renewable Energy to the utility, protecting our communities from, Global Warming, Poison Water, Grid Failures, Natural Disasters, Toxic Natural Gas and Oil Fracking.
A California Commercial FiT in Los Angeles, Palo Alto, an Sacramento Ca. are operating NOW, paying the Business Person 17 cents cents per kilowatt hour.

Wow! 404 ppm. That’s 0.0404% CO2. And of that amount of CO2, how much is man-made? 5%. So, you think regulating 0.002% of the atmosphere will prevent sea levels rising 220-300’? I suggest you quit adding to the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere by stopping your exhalation.
Wow, foolish pigeye, do you believe your own insane thoughts ? In Reality:

‘Toxic Ton’ – New unit of measurement
It would be great if the news outlets would stop performing stenography for for a radical group of environmentalists and actually stopped to take a real look at the so called ‘science’ rather than regurgitating increasingly shrill nonsense from the extreme left.
This site justifiably blasts other sites for sloppy journalism on every other topic. You should focus that insight on the global warming fear mongering.
The “so called science” has so far proven remarkably accurate in its predictions of a warming planet , increasing heat waves, fires, melting ice caps, loss of sea ice, species migration and variable rainfall. The last 12 months were the hottest on record. July 2015 was the hottest month on record. Emissions are increasing in line with the calculations for business as usual. Arctic tundra is melting emitting increasing amounts of CO2 and methane. This is not from a “radical group” it is mainstream science compiled and reviewed by thousands of scientists over the years. That is why 97% of scientists agree with this “so called science”.
So far, more CO2 is a net positive. The greening of flora and increased yields of agriculture greatly outweigh the costs (if any) of warming. Based on scientific observations, we should burn more coal not less.
A “net positive” doesn’t mean “maybe there are some positives.” Dangerous acidification of the oceans alone completely outweighs these marginal benefits from “greening flora.”
The yields of some basic food crops, like maize, are actually going down already.
The Climate Change Business Journal produced an interesting report recently. It is summarized by the Insurance Journal here:
http://www.insurancejournal.com/news/national/2015/07/30/377086.htm
The Global Climate Change industry is now a $1.5 trillion annual business. That is 9 percent of the US GDP. This does not include the tens of billions in annual government funding going to climate change research.
While it should have been obvious for some time now that climate change is a large and growing business, its sheer size is a surprise to many. As a couple of more points of reference: Exxon-Mobil’s revenues are $365 billion and Koch Industries are $115 billion annually. Unless climate change activists and scientists are immune to universal human vices and foibles, I think it is fair to say that the huge amount money sloshing around the climate change / green industry makes their motivations at least as suspect as those in industry. Green activists are very well-funded and they are using their funds strategically to directly influence regulation and legislation. Case in point: Tom Steyer (who made most of his fortune in the coal industry but is now heavily invested in ‘green’ projects) gave $50 million to Democrats last election cycle in exchange for their promise to elevate climate change as an issue.
$1.5 trillion per year will buy a lot of scientists
“$1.5 trillion per year will buy a lot of scientists”
As well as NASA, the Pentagon, the International Science Foundation, the National Science Foundation…..
You idiots need to find a new meme.
I laugh when anyone in the US uses the words ‘Communist’, ‘Marxist’, or ‘Socialist’. Americans by an large are totally ignorant of Socialism in general.
As a product of a UK Labor Government, who was farsighted enough to implement universal Health Care, and pay for my University Education, ‘Socialism’ means ‘good’ to me…
Keep up the great work Homer. Expose the global warming scam costing us all billions.
I find the “climate science” meme quite confusing. So far we have had many solutions to the problem of the increase of CO2: including, Ethanol, fracking, wind mills and solar cells. None of these technologies have panned out: there has been no decrease in CO2 due to these technologies (maybe fracking, if you disregard methane, a green house gas) and, on the contrary, a massive increase in green house gases as well as a reliance on dodgy sources for smelting and acquiring these rare earth minerals and metals.
According to the EPA, Iowa’s CO2 footprint per person increased by 30% at the same time the proportion of electricity from wind mills increased to 30%. Today it is a national leader in wind energy. It is also the 43rd most polluting state based on CO2 per capita. (Denier?)
I think in pointing the finger we are unified in our fears, however, science means disproving something. “Climate science” doesn’t disprove anything: it models climate. Modelling climate is an art, not a science.
Now, I will be roundly attacked in the same fashion: a Republican denier who just wants to ruin the world. This is a typical attack from people who only understand retreat, degrade, destroy. But it is not the case. It is precisely because I care about the environment that I question the eco-theists who “believe” we “must act” when the solutions proposed cause greater environmental degradation than “doing nothing.” (A coal mine closed to US consumers is now selling to much dirtier factories in China; a neodymium plant in China has created an artificial lake full of cancerous chemicals, several miles wide and 300 meters deep; and, the continued search for rare earths and rare minerals used in clean energy industries, as well as defense and electronics, has led to wars that have already claimed 6 million lives in the Congo.)
These are our 21st century ideas, and that is the uncomfortable truth: the greatest threat to our security is not climate change but genocide and war. The clean energy industry provides a cover for war and plundering the third-world, in the name of climate change. It increases pollution using dodgy stats “proving” that solar, wind, ethanol or fracking “reduces climate change” (a grammatically suspicious statement to say the least).
If the fashion were to worry about pollution, ecological destruction or plundering natural resources in the third world, the climate change lobby would be out of business.
But America needs leaders and leadership means the best and brightest and Enron-style accounting. (Just believe, Tinker Bell, and you can fly!)
Oops, Iowa is the 8th highest state for CO2 emissions per capita, not 43rd. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._states_by_carbon_dioxide_emissions)
It is difficult to coherently address your rambling post, and so I will concentrate on the climate change aspect only. In the first place, almost all science can be considered to be “mathematical modeling” in one sense or another; if you were to attempt to predict how long it takes a baseball dropped from six feet to reach the floor, you would probably use Newton’s laws and make your prediction based on the equation t = sqrt(2s/g) where s is the distance fallen and g is the local acceleration of gravity. A purist would say that is wrong because of general relativistic effects, and a Newton denier would argue that it’s only a model. (But you would need a very good stopwatch and humanly impossible reaction times to measure the difference.) Climate models come in various kinds, and are generally most accurate on very large scales where phenomena can be treated statistically. For instance, radiative transfer models (measuring heat balance) are quite well verified, and accurately predict the rise in the temperature (and hence energy) of the atmosphere as the CO2 level increases. These models can tell us that if the CO2 concentration increases by a certain amount, the temperature will increase by a certain amount. What is uncertain is the rate at which CO2 is being added – past modeling has generally underestimated the rate of increase of CO2, which is why more recent predictions paint a gloomier picture than earlier ones. (Scientists have the unfortunate tendency to be optimistic, assuming that CO2 emissions would be cut in response to the evidence.) Then there is the situation vis a vis China and India. These countries have been experiencing very rapid growth, and with that came energy consumption. Certainly, China now has overtaken the US as the leading source of atmospheric CO2 increase. But the fallacy of your argument, one that is embraced by the Obama administration, is that since the Chinese are not doing anything, we should not do anything either. It is a global problem, and everyone should be doing their share to address it. That some countries are not doing enough has not prevented the more advanced countries in Europe, for instance, from adopting ambitious programs to move away from fossil fuels and increase energy efficiency. In other words, just because one of your neighbors is a pig is no excuse for you to be one also.
And, by the way, China is working to reduce its CO2 footprint. Already they produce more solar energy than the US, and they have acknowledged the role of CO2 emissions in climate change. So, while we can certainly criticize them for their pollution, we Americans by no means own the moral high ground on this issue (either).
Horner is part of the denier lobbyist network: http://thedakepage.blogspot.com/2015/03/collusion-among-climate-denial.html
Let’s see, the NSA and other five eyes, brought to you by the U.S. government=bad. EPA, brought to you by same entity=good.
It seems like many of these climate scientists are funded by the government. I have no idea who this guy is but FOIA requests and hacked/leaked accounts is what made this website in the first place. Sounds like my kind of guy.
Sounds like you’re not thinking it all the way through, dude.
Or maybe you aren’t thinking it all the way through?

NAZI fascists like Chris Horner have no respect for truth, honesty and integrity. They will use any lie and any tactic to undermine truth and disparage the reputations of those they see as “enemies” because they hold views opposite those of horner and the corporations he represents.
Horner, quite obviously, is a student of Joseph Goebbels and practices the “Big Lie” philosophy everywhere he goes. It is expected that charlatans like Chris Horner would do what they do, but what is really telling is how industry hires clowns like him to use lies and intimidation to win battles they cannot win on merit.
Irresponsible asswipe.
Technically speaking, he is a whore. A well paid whore, but not a classy one.
Top-notch work, Lee.
Great work! But I found the headline really confusing: I took it to mean “Attorney *Is* Hounding Climate Scientists Covertly Funded By Coal Industry” (sure, why shouldn’t he?) rather than “Attorney Hounding Climate Scientists *Is* Covertly Funded By Coal Industry”. It’s the attorney, not the climate scientists, that’s funded by the coal industry. I only realized what you meant after reading a few sentences into the story and exclaiming “wait – what?” Maybe add an “is” to resolve the ambiguity?
The man-caused climate change deniers don’t seem so good at debating science. I’ve got to go with what seems to be the preponderance of the thinking of the relevant scientific community.
Climate change deniers have a problem with debating the science because they don’t believe it and refuse to understand it. Hopefully one day they will realise that facts are not a matter of belief they just are. You have made the right choice :).
Great expose Lee. Horner is low, low scum, doing some of the most unconscionable work in the world. Thanks for helping make his funding sources known.
No he is not “low scum”, he is just a business person who is more interested in helping himself than looking after rest of the world or thinking about things such as integrity, honesty and objectivity. A perfect fit with the global fossil fuel industry….
In other words, scum.
