Two big issues dogged Hillary Clinton during the Democratic primary: the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement (TPP) and fracking. She had a long history of supporting both.
Under fire from Bernie Sanders, she came out against the TPP and took a more critical position on fracking. But critics wondered if this was a sincere conversion or simply campaign rhetoric.
Now, in two of the most significant personnel moves she will ever make, she has signaled a lack of sincerity.
She chose as her vice presidential running mate Tim Kaine, who voted to authorize fast-track powers for the TPP and praised the agreement just two days before he was chosen.
And now she has named former Colorado Democratic Senator and Interior Secretary Ken Salazar to be the chair of her presidential transition team — the group tasked with helping set up the new administration should she win in November. That includes identifying, selecting, and vetting candidates for over 4,000 presidential appointments.
As a senator, Salazar was widely considered a reliable friend to the oil, gas, ranching and mining industries. As interior secretary, he opened the Arctic Ocean for oil drilling, and oversaw the botched response to the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Since returning to the private sector, he has been an ardent supporter of the TPP, while pushing back against curbs on fracking.
The TPP would enhance the ability of corporations to sue to overturn environmental regulations, but Salazar helped a pro-TPP front group, the “Progressive Coalition for American Jobs,” argue the opposite.
In a November 2015 USA Today op-ed that Salazar co-wrote with Bruce Babbitt, the two men argued that the TPP would be the “the greenest trade deal ever” by promoting sustainable energy. Both Salazar and Babbitt cited their former positions as interior secretaries to boost their credibility.
The following month, Salazar authored a Denver Post op-ed with two former Colorado governors also affiliated with PCAJ, arguing that the agreement would protect the state’s scenic beauty: “And as a state rich with natural wonder and a long history of conservation, Colorado can be proud that the TPP includes the highest environmental standards of any trade agreement in history.”
Shortly after leaving his post at the Obama administration, Salazar appeared at an oil and gas industry conference to argue in favor of fracking.
“We know that, from everything we’ve seen, there’s not a single case where hydraulic fracking has created an environmental problem for anyone,” Salazar told the attendees, who included the vice president of BP America, another keynote speaker at the conference. “We need to make sure that story is told.”
The EPA acknowledged in 2015 that fracking has contaminated drinking water wells. And methane, a gas with a climate impact 86 times that of carbon dioxide, is known to leak from fracked gas infrastructure.
Salazar is on the leadership team of a business group in Colorado fighting against a pair of ballot initiatives that could limit fracking. The Denver Post referred to the group as the “political equivalent of a tested military reserve unit that the [Denver Chamber of Commerce] calls into action when it believes business interests in the state face a serious threat.”
Environmentalists are alarmed. “If Clinton plans to effectively tackle climate change, the last thing her team needs is an industry insider like Ken Salazar. Salazar’s track record illustrates time and again that he is on the side of big industry, and not of the people,” Greenpeace USA Democracy Campaign Director Molly Dorozenski said in a statement.
Salazar currently works as partner at WilmerHale, a D.C.-based law and lobbying firm. His clients are not public, but his firm lists his job as giving “policy advice to national and international clients, particularly on matters at the intersection of law, business and public policy.” Staff at the firm have been involved in TPP negotiations.
Members of the presidential transition team are not required to disclose their finances — meaning we may never know if and how much Salazar is paid for all of the advocacy outside his salary at WilmerHale.
Salazar has long been criticized for his connections to the industries he regulates. For example, in a 2010 Salon post, Intercept co-founding editor Glenn Greenwald highlighted Salazar’s connections to BP, noting that “even as BP continues to spew oil in unfathomable quantities into the Gulf,” Salazar was waiving environmental reviews and approving new wells in the Gulf of Mexico.
Top photo: Then-Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar on Capitol Hill in 2010.
Literally just finished watching Gasland, and saw how Colorado farmers and residents were the first to be poisoned, some nearly killed, and their land rendered undesireable thanks to the false promises of safe drinking water from the fracking industry. This is disgusting and I am sorry that more people aren’t aware.
You are blaming Salazar for being too far right? The op/ed below from a Conservative blames him for being too far left.

Must be a good pick if extremists from both sides are unhappy.
What has she ever done to prove her sincerity? Like so many corrupt politicians she will say whatever she feels is necessary to achieve her goals.
She doesn’t care that a minority sees her for what she is, as long as the majority is fooled for long enough.
She chose Salazar to get the Latino vote. She’s a liar. She changes almost daily.
KEN SALAZAR IS A FASCIST IMPERIALIST CORPORATIST STOOGE PUPPET!!
CORRUPT BEYOND DESCRIPTION!
All I can say is that I do not trust Hillary, and I trust T-Rump even less. The lies told on the campaign trail will not save us from economic and ecologic disaster. Only ethical people can do that. Where are they to be found? Not in Hillary’s House. Not in T-Rump’s.
That Hillary keeps putting people (already) tied at the hip to big corporate giveaways and linked to all sorts of unethical decisions, is only telling all of the nation that is is INDEED unfit to run this nation. But T-Rump is even more unfit. This is a horrible situation.
“We know that, from everything we’ve seen, there’s not a single case where hydraulic fracking has created an environmental problem for anyone (I care about) ,” Salazar told the attendees…”
The media must focus on the fact Hillary rigged and stole the Democratic nomination for President instead of totally ignoring it. I was a staunch supporter of Bernie, not a Trump supporter, but what is the point of having campaigns or who else is running if Hillary is just going to coronate herself. Part 5 of the 2016 SenSnders DemCrookdClinton DOUBLECROSS– you are too! Just so you donot feel omitted!
I have never missed voting in an election. In November I’ll show up to vote, but for President I’m writing in “None of the Above.” I’m not even sure I’ll cast a vote for either my incumbent Senator or his challenger (both of whom are establishment corporatists and I detest them equally). I may even leave the Democratic Party.
I know these are just gestures. If we don’t start taking to the streets by the tens of thousands, nothing is going to change.

Oh Wait! Bernie lost that one about TPP at the convention. Still, he’s in there working for us as an insider. So that he can be more effective as an insider, we should follow his example and support Hillary.
Not to worry. Fortunately, Bernie dissuaded Hellery from supporting big oil and the TPP. You do remember her pulling back on those fronts during their debates, don’t you? Then, just to make sure, at the Democratic Convention Bernie nailed down anti-fracking and anti-TPP planks in the Democratic Platform. He was able to accomplish all this by working as an insider and by remaining a party loyalist.
Just wait till Kaine and Salazar wake up and crash into those anti-fracking and anti-TPP walls in the Democratic Platform. Can’t wait to see the surprised and anguished faces of Hellery, Kaine and Salazar once they discover how Bernie has outflanked them.
Sorry, I guess this goes here.
Oh Wait! Bernie lost that one about TPP at the convention. Still, he’s in there working for us as an insider. So that he can be more effective as an insider, we should follow his example and support Hillary.
So much for Bernie moving Hillary to the left…
Hillary just did it. I’m a lifelong liberal voting for Donald Trump. His demented figurehead presidency will be far more interestingly destructive of the American fabric of the elites than this sold-out Wesleyan cow.
Hillary is honestly not that far removed from Dick Cheney at this point.
more things in heaven and earth than the two parties, alleged “lifelong liberal”
You’re really underestimating her ability to rig the general election. Although voting for Trump has more potential than voting for Stein, I don’t think there’s any way in hell that she will lose. We’re looking at stage 4 corruption here. #Demexited
Hillary Clinton addresses Americans as best she can…..
and this time, she’s not lying.
Clinton’s choices for her transition team prove that she lied about things like opposing the TPP. She just pretended to take more progressive positions to fend off the challenge of Bernie Sanders.
But there’s something worse here: the admonition of Sanders to support Clinton because, for one thing, the Democratic Party now has its most progressive platform ever. As many of us said at the time, totally meaningless. Politicians always ignore platforms after elections, and it seems that Clinton isn’t even waiting until then. I can’t understand how an experienced politician like Sanders could be fooled by a mere platform or, alternatively, why he would try to fool his supporters by using it while knowing how meaningless it is.
The appointment of Salazar is a whole new level of Clinton arrogance. She is mocking the Bernie supporters who threw their support to her after the primaries. She is telling them they have to vote for her even if she insults them. She is essentially calling them suckers. This is totally over the top.
Well said. I don’t know how else this appointment can be viewed.
Great article! Protecting our environment is one of the most important issues. Unfortunately, we have two of the worst candidates ever. One doesn’t believe in climate change and the other one does, but has done everything possible to serve the interests of the oil companies. Clinton promised Sanders that she won’t push for fracking, but we all know how “honest” she is.
this election cycle is nauseating. it is difficult to imagine lying Hillary beating ANYONE for potus with the possible exception of a circus barker who is using the platform for nothing more than the free publicity he receives. meanwhile the money whores in the media are about as professional as the sham wow guy when it comes to informing the electorate about the choices and decisions we need to make.
so now rather than how can a corrupt money grubbing criminal possibly be our next president the question is how can she lose? the 2 totally corrupt private organizations who have delivered this shit show are somehow allowed to coopt the publics air waves for their debate extravaganza while excluding all other persons and parties who would like to offer us an alternative. I suppose if these 2 parties had done a good job governing we could justify their elitist claims. problem is the wholly purchased as—les that make up our government have rather made a mess of things.
perhaps the saddest outcome in this cycle is the complete humiliation of Bernie sanders who appeared to fight the good fight. he was cheated out of victory by the dnc and the Clinton machine but boldly hung on. then the one who was anointed allowed him to make a complete ass of himself demanding this and that be part of the “platform”. well I guess this appointment shows what shillary thinks about all that blather from a sucker like sanders (I had such great hope).
hold on there bubba louie. i had lots of respect for the sham wow guy and he had a great product. He has since died, sadly, but i enjoyed watching his presentations with some envy. On the other hand, i keep a barf bag handy for the msm.
to start with, call bernie’s office and tell them you want a refund and an apology or, his resignation or, A PUBLIC RETRACTION FROM BERNIE OF HIS ENDORSEMENT FOR HELLARY.
Ken Salazar should have been fired as Interior Department after the BP disaster. The Interior Department was known to be corrupt before the 2008 election. Obama noted this when he was campaigning for president. The Interior was in bed with th oil and gas, selling leases on the cheap and looking the other way when these thieves cheated the government on output fees. The BP disaster revealed that they failed totally in their role safeguarding our homeland. Ken Salazar should have gone to prison for his complicity in the loss of life. More importantly, the Gulf of Mexico has been poisoned. Salazar allowed BP to use dangerous chemicals that only hide the oil. The people in the Gulf are being poisoned. How many thousands will die from this? Big Oil owns the Gulf. There will be no government studies showing the connections between growing rates of cancers and immunological diseases. As Interior Secretary, Salazar’s biggest concern was protecting BP from the fallout.
The planet is screwed.
What’s amazing is how few Hillary supporters will see this as a bad thing. #wakeup America! This isn’t a game, and we are losing!
#timetobust #stillsanders #neverhillary #nevertrump
people who vote for Hellary Clinton are selling their children to the demands of wallstreet organised crime, inc. Ever notice how the F…B…I… didnt charge either of them?
as several other people have noted, trump and other right wingers deny climate change while clinton and other dems believe in it but do sweet fanny adams about it. she’s pushed fracking overseas as secretary of state (no conflict of interest there) and gets a LOT of her campaign cash from the energy sector. the koch brothers seem to like her. so do the oil/gas companies that run ads on CNN and other cable outlets. i’m sure it’s a coincidence they’ve been foaming at the mouth with anti-trump lunacy (though bill clinton allowing their parent companies to swell and bloat into monolithic near-monopolies might be a factor.)
just like obama with his nafta pandering, hillary is just saying what it takes to win over gullible idiots. luckily that’s her key demographic. look forward to more lawsuits like transcanada v. the USA. (side note: a lot of the tar sands in canada are owned by the kochs.)
There you go. Salazar is a crooked liar and fascist as they come. His tenure as Interior Secty was unprofessional and unethical as they come.
Hillary has made a huge mistake with this one, and has made of fool out of us.
Shameful.
I got censored again on this comment thread.
I bet you said something shocking. They couldn’t handle the truth.
“I bet you said something shocking. They couldn’t handle the truth.”
STFU, dick-sucker.
what, more d*ck-sucking…..again? You use that phrase so much, I think you should start charging $.
You do seem to like it so much.
You’re projecting.
need a dictionary? thesaurus? how about a book on creative writing? ;)
That’s pretty unlikely. The commenting software is buggy and, among other things, most comments with more than one link either do not appear, or are delayed.
A number of people have recently reported comments without multiple links also not showing up — myself included. It’s just a weirdness that happens here sometimes. No human (or moderator) is doing this. It’s a software thing.
well, the human moderator Travis Mannon also emailed me and he was backed by Charlotte Greensit in another email.
AS I said – Hilary became against it when the polls told her the people are against it – to pick running mates that are for it tells you everything you need to know. SHE will vote whatever benefits her NOT THE PEOPLE. Any doubts look at her political career and voting record
The White House & the GOP are gearing up to give away local legal and political democracy to the international corporate super state via TPP before December 2016. Republicans are stating that they are breaking from the Tea Party faction of the GOP (code for Republicans are going to vote with Obama on this rare occasion and Republicans that don’t vote for TPP are going to be labeled Tea Party fundamentalists). Yet we as American citizens still have recourse. You can follow the link below to tell your elected representatives that a vote for TPP will translate into a popular vote against their future reelection campaigns.

Salazar is in bed with the energy companies and totally corrupt – look at this $60 million deal we blew the whistle on!! It was approved anyway, despite full public disclosure of the corrupt deal!

crooks of a feather crook together.
She’s already showing her true colors : Republican Red. Thank goodness I don’t have to vote for HER. I live in a solid Red state, so I can safely vote third party, and Jill Stein is already on the ballot here. All true Progressives who aren’t stuck in a swing state should vote Green, especially Bernie or Bust, which is now officially for Jill. Don’t waste your vote on the fraudulent Corporate Candidate, who will bring more wars, more fracking, more destruction to the planet. #DemexitNOW #GoGreen #NEVERHILLARY #NoFracking #NOTPP #NoMoreWar #JillNOTHill #JillOrBust #SteinBaraka #Jill2016
http://dailycaller.com/2016/08/17/msnbc-anchor-asks-how-hillary-did-not-commit-perjury-in-congressional-testimony-video/
i always thought of her as the cat’s meow. good natured, leftwise, smart, honest. That has changed. When i heard she was a lawyer, and watched and listened, i became confused if she went from professional politician to professional liar or the other way around. Then i reasoned. “What difference does it make?”
If the leaders of one of the most powerful countries in the world, such as Clinton, continue to feed on the body politic oblivious to the damage they are doing (e.g. global warming, inequality etc.), the result will be societal upheavals on such a scale as to cause chaos.
Their inability, borne of a myopic and seemingly insatiable desire for money and power, to connect the dots (e.g. rising temperatures, flooding, mass migrations, Brexit, Turkey, Trump etc.) is profoundly disturbing.
Definitely voting Green.
hillary clinton is a “progressive” fraud, the only thing “progressive” about her is comparing her to a right wing extremist like donald trump.
anyone who votes for either of these frauds is an idiot, this is the election that voting third party (either jill stein or gary johnson depending on your views) is not only the right thing to do, but the only thing to do to try to stop the complete takeover by the corporate oligarchy.
Hillary Clinton gives ZERO fucks.
One would need to visit a physiatrist if you expected a different result. Indeed, insanity is doing the same thing over and over again while expecting different results. Neoliberals like Clinton are addicted to power
and now wealth they did not earn.
Hillary stole the primary from Bernie, as shown in this Stanford University Study:

This is not a “Stanford Study.” It was done by two graduate students there but not a sanctioned study. Anyway, thanks for the link.

More Ken Salazar, Really? I would vote for an albino monkey before voting for such a corrupt hag as Hillary Crooked Clinton. She should be executed for the destruction of Benghazi and her treasonous actions.
We saw how she sold the Ambassador of Benghazi out and let him be murdered, who is to say she won’t sell the rest of us out to the highest bidder for her private banking system called the Clinton Foundation? We all know it is made up of BLOOD money from terrorist countries including at least $21 million from the Saudi’s. Do we need another TERRORIST in the presidents office? Haven’t we learned enough from our dictator Obama? A vote for Hillary is a vote to have more of our civil rights trampled and more money taken from the taxpayer to give to corrupt military entities. USA is now a terrorist country with a government and military full of terrorist. Time to sit out this election or vote for Jill Stein!
don’t sit out this election, vote jill stein or gary johnson depending on your views, and make sure to vote for down ticket candidates.
the only way to stop this nonsense is to give the democrats and republicans a vote of no confidence by voting third party. staying home is what people have been doing for decades and low turnout is meaningless to those in power. us organizing behind someone who is not of the two parties sends a strong message to the two parties that they have failed us.
Don’t dis albino monkeys. They’re probably nicer than she is.
salazar blessed the construction of the cape wind project, but the project has halted because of lack of follow up. flip flopping is a real trend in the Democratic party – https://vineyardgazette.com/news/2010/04/29/interior-secretary-approves-cape-wind
Not too long ago I read an article here that said that Blackstone was preparing a team to take over the Treasury.
How about a follow up from David Dayen?
It appears that behind the scenes she is creating a government of Oligarchs.
A 1% Cabinet.
She is more dangerous than Trump could ever be.
It feels like a coup is in the works, not an election.
“She is more dangerous than Trump could ever be.”
Completely agree with this. She’s more pernicious than Trump precisely because she sounds reasonable (to those who don’t have a clue about what she stands for).
This election is perfect for her. She can continue to screw anyone that isn’t obscenely wealthy and the ignorant masses will be grateful because she’s “not Trump”.
It’s an Orwellian nightmare come to life.
i actually howl when i hear her holler how Donald has no this, no that. And she keeps doing that because she has nothing else to say because, SHE HAS NO PLAN.
what a farce she is.
Oh, Hillary has a “plan” alright.
It is to complete the Project for a New American Century’s playbook of the United States achieving Full Spectrum Military Dominance over the entire planet regardless of how many millions of totally innocent human beings must lose their lives.
Hillary Clinton is a Neocon liar and fraud and war criminal who will bring nothing but shame, anger and embarrassment to the American people and suffering, death and destruction to Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Ukraine and Iran. Probably to Venezuela, Brazil and Equador as well.
She wants to bring down Russia and Snowden and Assange and I think she would threaten WW III to get them.
She and her ilk must be resoundingly rejected on November 8th.
TRY CHOPPING THEIR HEADS OFF!! FOR A START!!
To vote Demoncrat or Repuglican is what the worst ignoramuses will do. Time and time again, America shows that world how they take a sad state and make it sadder. It is long past the point of voting for real change. Too much of American life resembles Soviet life of the 80’s. At least they started the 90’s off with noticeable change.
Vote for Jill Stein or else…
Almost too depressed to write a comment. Every morning I wake up and feed my news junkie addiction and for the remainder of the day am struck with this mix of anxiety and hopelessness. I just can’t believe trump and hillary are the two people unfortunately poised to become president. What kind of insane and cruel distopian future are we all about to enter. I will be proudly voting for jill stein.
Unfortunately it appears that we are living in an “insane and cruel dystopian” present. But hang in there my friend. Take a news fast for a few days and connect with what beauty you can. Do something kind for another person. And never forget this: human beings, despite our great capacity for ignorance, indifference, and cruelty, have an even greater capacity for kindness and compassion. Those qualities in all of their manifestations rarely make the news. (I too will be voting for Stein.)
Really makes you think.
TTP / TTIP etc. will have a devastating impact on countries’ democracy under the agreement, including the US. The highly secretive way the industry negotiates the agreements underline, once more, that those will never be accepted by the people during a transparent process.
Clinton should be held accountable for the fact that she stated to be against TPP, etc – and all she promises to win-over voters -. There has to be no way back.
For example: TTIP would enable the export of hormone-meat to Belgium. In Belgium the state fought for decades to eradicate the hormone-mafia so we can have safer food-standards. With TTIP this would be thrown out of the window and this struggle would have been in-vain. Same goes for GMO’s.
This isn’t a miscalculation at all. It’s HRC being HRC. She’s going to hippie-punch her way to the Oval Office.
If you’re shocked by this choice you’re just not paying attention.
Please don’t put her in the category of hippies, they were peace loving people who wanted PEACE. Where does HRC fit in this group? Besides we hippies are voting for Jill Stein!! The only candidate for the people.
HRC is the biggest war monger since Dianne Feinstein. Both should be taken out and put in front of an execution squad with Obama in the middle holding both their corrupt hands. That is what you call 3 pigs trying to get into a pod. All three a TOTAL DISGRACE to the USA!
hippie punching
(source Urban dictionary)
1. The fantasy common among disaffected right-wingers of assaulting people they imagine as the embodiment of treasonous forces afflicting the nation. Rarely if ever put into practice, since in the real world the hippies either went back to real life after 1980 or turned into Silicon Valley libertarians.
2. The practice common among establishment centrists of ritualistically denigrating progressives in order to win over imaginary swing voters and David Brooks. Sometimes misinterpreted as a boneheaded political mistake, it’s actually a sign of deep and unselfish commitment to pleasing owners and professionals even at the cost of losing elections.
1. After a pleasant afternoon of drinking antifreeze, Vaughan and Christian decided to go down to the fair-trade market for some hippie punching.
2. After a pleasant afternoon of tongue-kissing insurance lobbyists, David Axelrod decided to go down to the Washington Post for some hippie punching.
hippy punching – as in punching hippies. not siding with them.
Definitely not a ray of hope, but this article goes too far. He’ll oversee a process that will begin now and end in January, after the first 50 or so hires have been picked – not the full 4,000. TPP policy will get worked out (or sunk) over time. Jennifer Granholm will probably get DOE, so I’d take a closer look at her and whoever gets tapped for key green jobs.
This guy was the worst SoI on so many levels. He was(is) so obviously in the camp of fossil fuel industry…but he also opened up more public land for leasing (drilling) then any previous administration. He waged a war on wildlife (delisting of many species, including the iconic wolf across all regions despite the fact they aren’t even close to being recovered), there’s so much more. It was so obvious Obama was gonna be terrible on environment and on getting off of fossil fuels and other climate change issues. Clinton is gonna be worse then expected…she’s moving forward with her neocon FP and lining up all her cronies that bought into ‘pay-to-play’… I’m just sick with what has become of this country.
So sad to see the US pirated by a bunch of criminals in power right now. The US was the beacon for democracy and now because of the Clintons and their cronies its a dictatorship which has everyone terrified and compliant. Hoping that the US citizens can take back their country and save the world from Evillary and her thugs.
Egregious blunder.
TAO
The big problem here is that Hillary hasn’t really “come out against TPP”. She’s given us wishy-washy language like “I have said from the very beginning that we had to have a trade agreement that would create good American jobs, raise wages and advance our national security and I still believe that is the high bar we have to meet… I don’t believe it’s going to meet the high bar I have set.” So all it takes is a report that wages will really be better than she thinks now, or more jobs created, or she thinks such a report is coming, and then she isn’t even flip-flopping, she’s just telling us what is is.
And yet, I’m not nearly endorsing Trump, who I think can do the same thing more easily due to his lack of any perceived need not to simply flip his position as he pleases.
The truth is, terrorism is the new democracy, and it’s one terrorist one vote. Now the U.S. wants a TPP agreement with the Philippines too. But if you go sell your products in the Philippines and a local competitor doesn’t like it, he can just round up some yahoos, say there’s an anonymous allegation that the retailer is a drug user and kill him, and the next guy is more circumspect. Problem solved. The U.S. will either learn this kind of business acumen, or beg to work for those who do for whatever, if anything, they deign to pay.
Prophetic analysis. Hopefully enough activism will prevent the events that will result in civilized societies from digressing in this manner.
Big US investors set up call center and manufacturing corporations in the Philippines. The call centers basically rent their employees out to large US corporation for like 7 bucks an hour, then they turn around and actually pay the workers a small fraction of that. In reality, they are paying themselves an hourly wage overseas, times all the 1000’s of workers, while avoiding taxation of course.
Hillary is like the Chameleon, she changes color every time she needs to. I am nor surprised at all about her behaviour, what really surprised me is the disappearance of Bernie Sanders. I respect Bernie, he is an honest politician, however, I don’t understand how an honest man like him can support Clinton. He had a choice, he could had support the Green Party and starts, once for all, working for a third party and make it bigger and stronger. He chose the easy way, unfortunately, Bernie it is also the dirty way. What a sad end of your revolution, Bernie. You just did the biggest political mistake of your career.
“The EPA acknowledged in 2015 that fracking has contaminated drinking water wells”
Except that it’s never happened. EPA has been thoroughly discredited on this claim.
Except that it’s never happened. EPA has been thoroughly discredited on this claim.???
Let me guess what happens… Methanol is metabolized in the livers of American residents into Formaldehyde via the following equation:
CH3OH –> CH2O.
Formaldehyde initially causes blindness until it moves into the central nervous system and kills the person who drank it, if they don’t get treatment in time. At least there is an antidote for drinking methanol tainted drinking water. Yet there is limited knowledge of the wide array of other toxic chemicals in fracking liquid, as the individual ingredients are proprietary, and some chemical are recently discovered/created and have limited scientific information backing them. Luckily for our generation of Americans we will serve as corporate scientific Guinee pigs of the health effects of all these new and exciting toxins that are injected and leach into our aquafers. Unfortunately for Americans, we will be afflicted by neurotoxicity, cancer, and a wide array of horrible individual and community medical catastrophes. The scientific community will be baffled as to which specific chemical in these cocktails is linked to specific medical ailments, which the fracking industry and their bought politicians will exploit as plausible deniability.
now you’re talkin’! i take back the “youlie” as i misunderstood your understanding. thanks.
Actually I’m not “david,” I’m “Dave.” So your initial understanding was appropriate and you can take back your take back as that david is probably a liar or has huffed too much fracking fluid. Yet I completely understand the mix up as my moniker is common on this site and is also an abbreviation of “david.” I run into similar mix ups when I go to a parties and there are 5 other guys there wearing the same the same shirt as me that we all bought from Costco. I guess I could be more original and post under a clever pseudonym, like Mussolini, but it’s not that big of a deal. Yet if you see “David,” “dave,” “david,” or “Dave” post a comment here in the future which you disagree with or is factually incorrect please continue to challenging them. If it’s me and I disagree I will also respond, for when I’m wrong it’s better for all to see as everyone reading will leave better informed.
Boy are we getting the big bend over from this future administration. Can smell the wheels and deals burning already.Hope you all have your seat belts tightened tight, we are in for a ride and it’s not going to be good for the people.
Any new planets accepting reservations in December? Want to have Thanksgiving at Home!
Where is Bernie Sanders now? Still “hanging” onto that endorsement of the betrayer? No wonder Bill got taken up. He probably cant stand her.
“Bill” as the massacre of Balkans?
After much observation and thought, i have come to the conclusion that Hillary Clinton is clinically depressed and MAY hate men. This would explain her willingness to sell weapons to deplete the planet of the male species. I can say with near cetainty that her stumbling seems to indicate mini strokes and her head jerk thing is what happens when your brain freezes an image while turning your head and when your brain “reconnects/refreshes” you experience having been transported, but its virtual and startling nevertheless. this effect does not affect cognitive abilities but it is weird. strictly a visual phenomena. i feel sympathy for anyone suffering this, but not to the point of voting for them.
Bernie showed us his seat in the senate was more important to him than the people. He needs to make sure he keeps that pay check coming in. I was truly let down by him, and felt he hung us out to dry.
He may have thought he was going to help Hillary, he didn’t. He has driven us to Jill Stein, the only candidate not tainted by huge corporate money. I don’t know about others, but I lost any respect I ever had for Bernie Sanders. He showed that he was nothing but a cowardly bag of wind. Totally disappointed in him.
I’m voting for Jill Stein, without being a spoiled brat about it.
Ditto. Bernie calculates that stopping Trump renders it imperative to elect HRC and that we must therefore vote for her. I won’t, but many, including Bernie, are decent people.
Business as usual
“It’s one big club and you aint in it” – George Carlin
“Business as usual
“It’s one big club and you aint in it” – George Carlin”
Not that I can upstage Mr. Carlin, RIP, but somehow when I read the first part, I instantly thought:
Business as usual
“It’s one big club and they’re bringing it down on your head.”
Unfortunately, they’re both true.
THE WITCH AND THE WARLOK hows that for a title?

Damn Hypocrit Hellery will sell anything and everything – She will even sacrifice the future of America and the lives of your generations.

BIGGEST WHORE FOR WAR ON THE PLANET. doesnt mind WW3.
huffingtonpost*dot*com/michael-brenner/is-hillary-a-warmonger_b_10440976.html
makes DiT look like an angel imo.
Just as I said when President Obama kept basically the same economic team as then President Bush. “Its all a bunch of hoopla folks. And, until Americans start paying attention to policy of political party, nothing will change.
“The EPA acknowledged in 2015 that fracking has contaminated drinking water wells. And methane, a gas with a climate impact 86 times that of carbon dioxide, is known to leak from fracked gas infrastructure.”
‘If Clinton plans to effectively tackle climate change, the last thing her team needs is an industry insider like Ken Salazar.’
Excellent quotes that reveal important points. Political focus on curbing carbon dioxide admissions without addressing fracking of methane, misses the point that fracking is environmentally more destructive and emits a more potent greenhouse gas. Without addressing the most destructive offenders first, climate change policy will be hypocritical and will probably be ineffective. How much CO2 and pollutants are admitted by Navy ships, jets, bombs, and bullets, ect. that are continuously used in our wars in the Middle East? Can Hillary effectively tackle climate change without halting the (environmentally) destructive wrath of war?
The point is that Hellary is about to screw over every Democratic voter.
She and her brain tumor are for anything that gets them personally more money.
They are not about helping anyone else.
There are not any GOOD choices, but she is the worst. Pick someone else.
what’s the point of that Intercept crap?
what difference does it make that the guy heading her transition staff supports TPP or not?
his job has nothing to do with that.
You can’t be this clueless. Or maybe you’re just kidding around.
Tim, I’d go with the first guess.
Meh, probably a Clinton shill.
If so, she needs better shills.
really? just a big frikn coincidence. If i understand you correctly, you are cheating on your partner but it’s not really cheating – it’s just a gym workout.
hey @fuster. you probably already know that you are underpaid and underappreciated. And it shows because your comment is, cheap. You aren’t about to put out lots of effort to make a case because even tho you have the talent to do so, you are being disrespected, or actually, abused.
Which is a real opportunity for you to cash in. You know stuff. What’s it worth?
Drillary Clinton is a fracking nightmare.
That’s pretty good, I like that one.
Thank, couldn’t figure how to spin ‘Clinton’.
Klanton?
Clintoil?

Upper-class professional women’s “feminism” has become a total disgrace and joke. Jill Filipovic tweetd that Hillary Clinton’s transition team — including Salazar — “puts to rest” the idea that she’s a “centrist.” Why, doncha know, this team is pretty “progressive.”
Are you sure she meant, progressive. The statement is still correct if Clinton’s transition team is neocon, right?
Cuz neocon is not centrist.
I’m sure — that’s a quote. I can’t link to it because Filipovic blocked me months ago, but I saw a screengrab here.
God, she’s been snorting too much glue. I wonder what constitutes neocon then in her mind? Because summary executions, indefinite detention, loss of legal representation if accused of being a terrorist are all pretty extreme measures.
The only policy farther to the Right for Zieg-Hiellery to engage in are the slave labor camps. I wonder how that jibes with the $15/hr minimum wage she proclaims to believe in?
I’m not holding my breath.
Neoliberal “feminsts” are just the fucking worst. Rebecca Schoenkopf — who wrote that Jill Stein is “cunty” — just announced that Bill Clinton probably is a rapist, but he’s still a great guy, and a feminist.
Didn’t you know? They are liberating women by bombing their countries. Death doled out to sons, daughters, sisters, brother, parents, husbands, friends, co-workers, classmates, and ultimately communities, these women are being “liberated” (Hillary style) from the very people they lived for.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=yJi3R1C22H8
This one works for both of them.
Neo-con, Neo-liberal, they are all petty tyrants at heart. No morals, no decency, no caring – hard to tell apart from any other extremist except these refined “Neos” can do it with a smile!
Feeling Berned by the Dems these days.
I notice Eric Zuesse has come out for Trump as to the left of the harpy. She is a disgrace and obviously the greater evil.
Thanks, Zaid & Naomi.
Depressing, but there really wasn’t much question which way $hillary would go on these issues once she had the nomination locked up.
I’m sure she feels especially free to reveal her natural neocon self since the masses who think of themselves as progressive are, overwhelmingly, so terrified of D. Buffoon Drumpf that they would choose Attila the Hun as the lesser of two evils.
It has proven impossible to explain to them that Killary is, in fact, even more dangerous for the world than the clown, if for no other reason than that she will actually be able to have her evil programs approved and executed — and I use that final future perfect construction deliberately.
That’s my reasoning pretty much as well. Myriad institutional barriers exist to prevent Trump from doing insane and vile things. Two thirds of the public would shriek and rant about the nightmares he conjures.
By contrast, the establishment Dems will fall in line to defend every goddam thing that woman does. She’s breathing new life into neoconservatism. That is extremely dangerous.
“She’s breathing new life into neoconservatism. That is extremely dangerous.”
Obama beat her to the punch on that one. He’s to the Right of Dubya and She’s to the Right of him.
The only candidate to the Right of her is…..um….David Duke? Could that be right?
“Myriad institutional barriers exist to prevent Trump from doing insane and vile things.”
Yup. But the terrified and confused millions who believe that Trump is a madman (true) and Clinton is the LOTE (not true), are just unable to understand that.
You’re right, Doug. Similarly, after Obama came into office and proceeded to confirm that he was indeed a “progressive” fraud, Black Agenda Report labeled Obama “the more effective evil” (not the “lesser of two”), because his right-leaning corporate-friendly policies had the full support of the Democratic Party, who were eager to stand behind the “first black president”.
Right on the money, Doug. But the die-hards are out in full force; today in the Guardian one of their shills wrote a piece titled “Now is not the time for ideological purity.” What a laugh!
If there was ever a time when people should vote based on their principles, this is it.
Another reason not to vote for Hillary. I won’t vote for Trump either but I can’t possibly vote for corporate democrats. They are no better than republicans when it comes to our economy. I am voting for Jill Stein and some down ticket democrats. If they are for TPP, though, they will not get my vote.
Bravo, author of books for
“Are You There God? It’s Me,” Dorothy,…. to paraphrase notable writer above whose books are treasured by countless children, young adults and more. Retired librarian, I am pleased to find Judy Blume’s comment today in response to Clinton’s Salazar pick. HIllary has dropped her bluff. I was ready to grudgingly give her a vote, but having spent the last seven years in my seventies concerned about fracking and its impact on climate change, I can’T vote for either Clinton or Trump.
“”
Holy smokestacks, Batman.
What do I do now – just hide under a piece o’ shale?
This keeps getting more depressing, doesn’t it?
I was thinking about how far back The Former SoS can set us. Here are two primary examples.
Keep up the stories the nets don’t want to tell, but might.
you will well and truly GET FRACKED if you just hide under a piece o’ shale Joshua88.
alternative options include:
take the advice of Lewis Carroll and try hiding down a rabbit hole .
OR
follow the advice of the ostrich and bury your head in the sand.
So you’re really just a bunch o’ damned Putin lovers!
(Sorry, Greenwald made me do it)
And you know what? Somewhere between choosing Tim Kaine and now Ken Salazar – Hillary’s got me thinking Frackenlooper wasn’t so bad after all.
Just this morning I heard an ardent Clinton supporter arguing about how progressive Hillary really is. I wonder how the Salazar appointment squares with that meme?
A few months ago, I read the last book Bob Woodward wrote about Pres Obama.
I distinctly remember that he mentioned Mr Obama being a progressive no less than four times – maybe it was just in that one chapter or maybe within a few pages.
Apropos of not much and for what it’s worth (nothing) except skewed impressions, as Mr Woodward wasn’t trying to convince people of the President’s ideology, like these lying liars are re Mrs Clinton. A progressive who “gets things done,” happens to be a damned silly slogan.
Bob Woodward is the consummate sellout insider. Few in history have more thoroughly cashed in on an early triumph or dined out on one more extravagantly for such a long, long time.
Shorter version: Bob is really creepy.
He and Bernstein performed some stellar journalism. But really, how much credit does anyone get for hating Richard fucking Nixon? That’s just an obvious and easy position.
It had nothing to do with hating Nixon, Mona. They had the entire Government lined up against them, the Attorney General threatening to do obscene things to their publisher, nobody else in the press picking up on their story, accusations of treason. Come to think of it, not a lot unlike Dan Elsberg or Ed Snowden in terms of how they were treated by the establishment. But they worked hard, and picked up a few lucky breaks, and when the dust settled, they were proven right, Nixon left office in disgrace, and a bunch of his cronies did some jail time.
Since then, they have been living on their reputations, especially Woodward. But nobody should belittle the work they did then.
And, as it turns out, Richard Nixon was a far better president than either of the two most recent clowns. I say that as someone who despised the man.
Sure it did. All sane liberal people did. But I don’t object.
And I thought I was cynical.
Hillary’s decisions mentioned here and her courting of neocons, Republicans and war criminals like herself shows that she is taking the Left for granted already.
Bernie supporters clinging to the useless platform as justification for supporting Hillary are deluded traitors to their principles, and ultimately harming our people and country too.
Hillary can’t even manage to appear honest and trustworthy for the few months until the election.
She is a Wall Street coddling neoliberal warmonger to the core.
That’s not what I’m seeing as justification for voting HRC. It’s always horror at Donald Trump. Many people –especially African-Americans and Muslim-Americans — whom I respect are heading in that direction, or solidly there. I can’t and don’t judge them.
“Progressives” commenting over at HP use the platform excuse constantly.
The horror at Trump gets mentioned more of course, but the self-delusion that was so evident with Obama supporters when he started appointing Wall Streeters and Republicans to his cabinet is rampant as well.
I can’t help but judge… and as the polls show Hillary’s lead growing, I think voting your conscience (Jill Stein) becomes more acceptable.
I think a while back you were talking about having whoever wins being denied a majority so they would be weakened and less able to do much of anything that’s damaging… I think that remains the best we can hope for, and pushing for third party votes is the best way to do it.
I also think it’s still true that the more people see and hear from both Hillary and Trump, the less they like both… so maybe the debates will end up being positive for that goal.
Don’t kid yourself about damage limitation. Clinton can and will do a lot of damage and if necessary she will reach across the aisle to do it. Establishment Republicans are more likely to cooperate with her than with Trump.
There won’t be any holding her accountable, either. She knows how to avoid accountability and the highest law officers in the land have made her untouchable.
No kidding about another Clinton in the White House, please.
Agreed. There’s just no sugar-coating it. She’s going to do many horrible things. There will be more war(s).
Um, the choice I was addressing in Mona’s comment is working on the people who will vote for Hillary because of Trump, or not challenging them.
I’m saying work on them… try to convince them to vote third party.
A smaller plurality for Hillary is the best we can achieve unless the polls are really, really wrong or manipulated (and it gets exposed), or unless Wikileaks has something truly damaging, or she strokes out or something.
I’m afraid all of those things are unlikely, and just wishing otherwise is not what I would call productive. But don’t for a second think I’m happy about it.
I think it’s also true that if the Left had organized to challenge Obama instead of sitting on their asses, some damage could have been prevented.
Hillary wants eight years just like Obama and Bill, and pressure from the Left starting before the inauguration will threaten that goal.
Come back to me in four years’ time and report how well that works. As another contributor said, Hillary gives zero fucks.
OK, I see what you are against.
And I agree.
What alternative approach do you support?
Are you voting for Trump?
Do you think a third party candidate can win?
What?
That’s a total copout. If someone threatens my life or safety unless I help lynch a Black person, does that make helping them OK? Sorry, but sometimes one has to stand up for what’s right, even when it might cause some personal pain.
Salazar is being dishonest here:
Really? Chemical & Engineering News is not exactly a left-wing environmental outfit, and their take is somewhat different:
http://cen.acs.org/articles/94/web/2016/05/Toxic-chemicals-fracking-wastewater-spills.html
And as far as the TPP, it allows fossil fuel industries to sue the U.S. government for losses related to energy policy decisions, as seen with Transcanada’s Keystone lawsuit under NAFTA:
Just more proof that a choice between Clinton and Trump is a choice between herpes and gonorrhea, although Trump is more honest about his pro-fossil fuel agenda than Clinton is. Does this mean he’s also more honest about his anti-TPP claims? Very hard to say.
Regardless, this means even swing state voters should not hesitate to vote for Jill Stein.
Right. And I would guess that Salazar would not count increased frequency of earthquakes as an environmental effect, but the increase in earthquakes in Oklahoma over the period 2010 – 2015 as compared to the preceding 10 years is significant at the 7 sigma level – meaning it could happen by chance roughly once in a billion years. People started complaining in 2011 but the state denied any causal connection until 2015, and I suppose Salazar like the brilliant OK senator Inhofe are still in denial. No need to let facts influence your position on anything.
(I posted a response that did not make it in so am trying again)
I suppose Salazar does not consider earthquakes to be an environmental problem, for otherwise he would change his tune. According to data from the USGS the incidence of earthquakes in Oklahoma in the period 2000 – 2009 averaged about 36 per year. In 2010, with the advent of fracking, it increased to 1061. In 2013 it increased to 2850, and in 2014 to 5417. For those of you who are literate in statistics, the average for 2010 – 2014 relative to 2000 – 2009 is a 7 sigma event, meaning it would be expected to occur by chance about once in a billion years. It was not until 2015, believe it or not, that the government of Oklahoma admitted that they had a problem – any reasonable statistician would have seen it by June of 2010. But I suspect that both Mrs. Clinton’s transition team head and Oklahoma’s head up his ass Senator Inhofe are still in denial. Maybe it is one of god’s miracles. Oh, wait: earthquakes wouldn’t be called miracles, would they? Rather, blights. And if so, what have the god fearing citizens of Oklahoma done to deserve it?
“Salazar says he came to his conclusion after speaking wither others in the federal government, including scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey and Steven Chu, the Nobel Prize-winning former U.S. Energy Secretary who also says fracking is safe.”

Total Bullshit. Here are 2 links for you:

and
http://www.nytimes.com/2015/04/22/us/oklahoma-acknowledges-wastewater-from-oil-and-gas-wells-as-major-cause-of-quakes.html
The USGS data indicate that the average rate of earthquakes in Oklahoma in 2010 – 2014 was 33.8 times that in the pre-fracking period 2000 – 2009. The 2010 – 2014 rate was at the SEVEN sigma point relative to the prior decade. That means once in a billion years.
Utter bullshit.
Forbes, the print version of Faux Noise.
Ah, remember the massive BP oil spill? Recall who Obama picked to head the Department of Energy Office of Science, under Steven Chu?
http://www.nytimes.com/gwire/2009/03/23/23greenwire-obama-taps-sandalow-bp-official-for-highlevel–10246.html
This was one of the more underreported stories related to that disaster – that Obama had tapped the chief scientist of BP to run the DOE Science division, Steven Koonin. I mean, BP has the worst safety record of all the majors, far worse than Exxon and Chevron, but who spent the most on feel-good “clean energy” PR. That should tell you something about how this system operates. Notably, Steven Koonin vanished from view after the BP oil spill disaster – Obama didn’t want anyone to remember how close he was to BP, or all his expedited offshore oil leasing deals on their behalf. . .
So if anyone wonders why Obama, a coal-state Senator from Illinois in the pocket of Warren Buffet’s coal-heavy utility business, didn’t take any action on global warming issues in the first two years of his presidency, when there was a Democratic Congress, that should help explain it.
The sheer scale of lies and dishonesty, the liberal fascist-corporate agenda, the alliance with Bush neocon conservative-fascist agendas – well, what can you say? These are not very honest people, that’s for sure – all tied up in knots, in bed with coal and fracking and yet claiming to be concerned about global warming – how do they live with such rank hypocrisy? Astonishing. But that’s how they got their jobs, I suppose.
Still, it’s rather bizarre, the level of deception and sleaze involved in this game.
@24b4Jeff also
thanks for calling me out
either i read the article wrong or i mis-interpretted it
IN THE CONTEXT OF THE ARTICLE, Salazar simply denied or lied about what the others must have told him unless, those other persons are also full of it.
@photo, if Chu has said “no fracking problem”, and meant it, i would be shocked. It sounds like shock time.
fyi – i personally believe fracking will mostly destroy our water supply. But what is more unsettling, we have a lot of reckless people running things catering to a lot of people who are careless, and wallstreet allows that to be the economy that matters.
Actually I attempted three times to post responses regarding the connection between fracking an earthquakes but apparently TI is incapable of digesting anything scientific. There was an article in the NY Times on 24 April 2015 leading to USGS data that established the connection.
Also, it has recently come to light that lots of methane leaks into the atmosphere as a result of fracking. According to The Economist, fracking was the number 1 contributor to US methane emissions in 2015. This greatly disturbed the vegans who like to claim that livestock are the primary source. No longer.
The Utter Bullshit remark, while true, was prompted by my frustration with TI.
http://www.extremetech.com/extreme/225753-united-states-geological-survey-confirms-it-fracking-causes-earthquakes
Also see internal links in article.
no problem. I believe that the chemicals will become emulsified. Then over time, get into the aquafirs. Then drinking water and irrigation. So even if you dont live there to drink there, the crops are coming your way. These fools have poisoned us, imo. They think they are smart. Just smart enuf to be dangerous. If i see a ufo, i’m hitchin a ride.
And fracking does cause earthquakes. After Oklahoma stone walled for four years, they finally had to admit that there is a connection:
http://www.nytimes.com/2015/04/22/us/oklahoma-acknowledges-wastewater-from-oil-and-gas-wells-as-major-cause-of-quakes.html
Not only that, USGS data show the connection
http://www.nytimes.com/2015/04/24/us/us-maps-areas-of-increased-earthquakes-from-human-activity.html
Analysis of their data shows that the incidence of earthquakes in OK, which grew from an average annual rate of 35.8 per year in 2000 – 2009 to over 5000 in the year 2014 alone could happen by chance about once in a billion years.
Some people still do not ‘believe’ it, choosing instead to quote Steve Forbes’ rag to justify their myopia.
Salazar is a disgusting pig; don’t get your blood pressure up over anything he says any more than you would over what Cheney says. Salazar is a rancher, that’s all you need to know about him. (If you don’t know how evil ranchers are, do some reading about how much they’ve destroyed the natural environment of the western U.S. and Central & South American rainforests, just for starters.)
Here is an article that explains the mechanism behind methane leaks into both the atmosphere and groundwater from fracked wells:
http://viableopposition.blogspot.ca/2015/03/wellbore-integrity-and-methane-crisis.html
As fracked wells age, this problem will become increasingly severe and will significantly add to the greenhouse gas emissions sourced directly from fracking.
