The ShadowBrokers, an entity previously confirmed by The Intercept to have leaked authentic malware used by the NSA to attack computers around the world, today released another cache of what appears to be extremely potent (and previously unknown) software capable of breaking into systems running Windows. The software could give nearly anyone with sufficient technical knowledge the ability to wreak havoc on millions of Microsoft users.
The leak includes a litany of typically codenamed software “implants” with names like ODDJOB, ZIPPYBEER, and ESTEEMAUDIT, capable of breaking into — and in some cases seizing control of — computers running version of the Windows operating system earlier than the most recent Windows 10. The vulnerable Windows versions ran more than 65 percent of desktop computers surfing the web last month, according to estimates from the tracking firm Net Market Share.
The crown jewel of the implant collection appears to be a program named FUZZBUNCH, which essentially automates the deployment of NSA malware, and would allow a member of agency’s Tailored Access Operations group to more easily infect a target from their desk.
According to security researcher and hacker Matthew Hickey, co-founder of Hacker House, the significance of what’s now publicly available, including “zero day” attacks on previously undisclosed vulnerabilities, cannot be overstated: “I don’t think I have ever seen so much exploits and 0day [exploits] released at one time in my entire life,” he told The Intercept via Twitter DM, “and I have been involved in computer hacking and security for 20 years.” Affected computers will remain vulnerable until Microsoft releases patches for the zero-day vulnerabilities and, more crucially, until their owners then apply those patches.
“This is as big as it gets,” Hickey said. “Nation-state attack tools are now in the hands of anyone who cares to download them…it’s literally a cyberweapon for hacking into computers…people will be using these attacks for years to come.”
Hickey provided The Intercept with a video of FUZZBUNCH being used to compromise a virtual computer running Windows Server 2008–an industry survey from 2016 cited this operating system as the most widely used of its kind.
Susan Hennessey, an editor at Lawfare and former NSA attorney, wrote on Twitter that the leak will cause “immense harm to both U.S. intel interests and public security simultaneously.”
A Microsoft spokesperson told The Intercept “We are reviewing the report and will take the necessary actions to protect our customers.” We asked Microsoft if the NSA at any point offered to provide information that would help protect Windows users from these attacks, given that the leak has been threatened since August 2016, to which they replied “our focus at this time is reviewing the current report.” The company later clarified that “At this time, other than reporters, no individual or organization has contacted us in relation to the materials released by Shadow Brokers.”
Update: April 15, 2017
Late Friday night, Microsoft published a blog post stating that after an analysis of the ShadowBrokers leak, it had determined that most of the vulnerabilities were patched in a series of Windows updates released in March — updates that security researchers who analyzed the NSA tools apparently neglected to install. This means the exploits in question were not in fact “zero days” and that anyone running the most recent updates on software still supported by Microsoft is safe from the ShadowBrokers arsenal. But the timing of the patch in question is interesting: If Microsoft truly did not receive any help from the NSA, as it claims, the fact that it fixed a litany of holes vulnerable to secret NSA tools exactly a month before those tools were made public is an amazingly fortunate coincidence (curiously, Microsoft skipped the usual acknowledgements section with the patch, which typically nods to how they were informed of the threats fixed in a given update). At any rate, this is certainly good news for Windows users who keep their computers up to date, good news for Microsoft, and still very bad news for the NSA.
Update: April 14, 2017
This post has been updated with an additional comment from Microsoft.
Top photo: People sit in front of devices running the Microsoft Windows 8 operating system at a press conference launch of the system in New York City, on Oct. 25, 2012.
are we sure we want total ai and driverless vehicles……….
Ya know, people don’t need computers in their personal lives and the consumption of them and crap like smart phones is very environmentally harmful. Apropos to this article, it would be great if an attack got people to give up their needless computers and other technological crap like that. I’m not advocating for stealing anyone’s personal information or money, just for scaring people into forgoing this unnecessary garbage.
And before the personal attacks come, I use this computer for work and I couldn’t do my job without it.
A NSA leaked malware? WOW! This is why we all need to start taking our cyber security in our own hands. Install a killer firewall and always connect via a trusted VPN. For a deeper understanding of cyber security look at this infograph portraying all the happenings in the last decade: https://www.purevpn.com/blog/privacy-on-the-internet/
Do not let Microsoft get off easily. Microsoft work very closely with the NSA/CIA/etc. Microsoft is used in every Gov, financial, military, spy agencies around the world. Microsoft Windows plays a huge part in stealing information for US authorities, whether they be in gov, or huge private corporations.
every time i see a windows logo on a professional terminal screen i think – ohoh, i am going to do business with another flawed target? Not kidding.
For a US gov purchasing agency to accept the world’s worst opsys betrays common sense and invites corruption.
Yes, too amazing. It actual sounds like the NSA has another way into people’s computers/devices and thus no longer needed a way into them with 0Day exploits.
Hey Biddle, gee let’s lots forget to remind people that Microsoft was a willing participant in helping the NSA to get access to computers for Project Prism.
That’s kind of an important story-related detail isn’t it?
i was told about the ATT room when it was being built.
i never said anything because i figured word travels and would be common knowledge and understood by everyone.
and i never trusted microsoft.
https://www.heise.de/tp/features/How-NSA-access-was-built-into-Windows-3444341.html
and never will.
DON’T DO WINDOWS 10.
i dont know how much open source has been invaded by corrupt government thieves.
I always get a laugh when some pompous hypocritical rear end gets his/her knickers in a twist and complain about people leaking information that, when the situation is reversed, it is fine.
Pompeo (CIA) bleats on about Wikileaks yet when he (and Trump) were running in the election Wikileaks was getting all their praise
The fact is when there is an alleged leak of US secrets it is, in reality, a failure of some US Government organisation.
The fact is that the US Government has serially failed to engage with the DPRK, Even now American citizens, and other Foreigners are working there on various projects. As for the ‘trade blockage’, the knicker wearers would be even more unhappy to know that US manufactured products are being used in the DPRK’s armament and rocket industries.
The doors to the DPRK are wide open. Remember the USS Pueblo? Another US ‘win’? They are still winning – coal exports continue to China.
And to think that the US is going to fight a ‘cycberwar’ with them is somewhat futile – given the paucity of InterNet communications in the country. The DPRK cell system is well compartmented, Foreigners are on their very own network in the country.
The US Government has few morals, they are rabbiting around in other countries doing things they get upset about when the tables are turned.
The biggest terrorist organisation in the world IS the US Government, even to their own citizens. It is the States own worst enemy.
Assange owes nothing to the USA, he is an Australian living in a third country, Why does the USA think it has the right to tell other people what to do? In many of the countries I visit/work in they think, with Trump running the show, the country is a joke.
Hopefully the majority of decent, moral Americans will get off their collective duffs and vote in decent representatives next year. Look at what is in Congress at the moment, a bunch of grubbers trying to collect enough money to get back in, again.
Even Trump has USD$13-million for 2020!
Well said, and I too hope that the general public turns out in force in 2017 to change the corrupt legislative branch, but, I’m not very optimistic. the more the 1%’ers hurl the latest and greatest pice of bling to the masses, they are soothed while working their collective asses to consume all that they can, in search of happiness.
Nearly a month ago we heard a new from Microsoft that now everyone has upgrade into Win 10. But the moment few people did, they encountered some malicious activities which was from no other application but from MS office. How terrible is this? And now Microsoft stating that they are taking necessary actions to protect our customers, all lies. When we face problem, there isn’t Microsoft reliable source that could give us immediate solution but we need took for some trusted forums and blogs like cnet or hackersnews or http://gotowebsecurity.com/
http://www.blacklistednews.com/How_Vault_7_Tools_Used_by_Private_Contractors_Build_MSM_News/57945/0/38/38/Y/M.html
It’s a pretty good article. As usual, too many comments are from people who don’t seem to have read it. Regrettably, I responded to a few.
The best part of the story is the update. I would have been tempted to replace the entire thing from the viewpoint of the update, but thanks for the ‘full disclosure” of your process.
Yes the timing of the latest patch is really interesting. It could mean a variety of things. It could mean these fixes were being stored up for part of a periodic batch (service pack) and that the previous shadowbrokers release triggered MS to act more quickly, but the vulnerabilities were known and not disclosed until long afterward.
Known by whom, and exactly when is what we don’t really know,
Microsoft has always opposed full disclosure – and there’s not enough concern or solidarity among their user base to mitigate this lack – so the problem will continuously recur and there will be long gaps in time when the best of MS installs can be quietly compromised.
What makes sense is that the NSA/CIA gave microsheets a HEADS UP. Which means…
Why are none of these scum in jail?
“Anti-racists” say there’s a RACE problem. They say it’ll be solved when
non-Whites pour into ALL & ONLY White nations and “assimilate” to
get a brown mixture.
They say only White nations have this RACE problem; they say non-White nations are fine.
If I object to my own genocide these “anti-racists” say I am a naziwhowantstokillsixmillionjews.
They say they’re anti-racist. What they are is anti-White.
Anti-racist is a codeword for anti-White.
No one of note says these things you’ve fabricated in your head.
If your not a PC Gameaholic, just use Linux. Been running it since 2010. Unless you, sudo apt-get install somecrap, it works great. I’ve never had a virus or malware problem.
And you say it was “leaked”? Purposefully I guess.
Log into Facebook-your government is listening.
Where are the lawyers who want to get rich?
Microsoft issued false statements they didn’t know about these vulnerabilities, but then magically fixed some of these vulnerabilities a few weeks ago.
If you’re afraid of going up against Microsoft, what about using attorneys near retirement who’ve already completed their careers? Something’s gotta work to get this into the legal system.
Use Unix/Linux and keep them out.
But I love windows XP. Why cant I still keep using it? Why o why…
Microsoft getting EVERYone to update to Win .
Well good, the world is finally waking up to the spy called Windows.
1. Its called Windows so they (MS, NSA, CIA, MI5+6, Mossad, etc) can look into your life and see whats happening.
2. They call it a Web. Webs catch things, as do Nets, like your data.
3. US government labs don’t keep secrets on Windows, they use Linux or Unix, and so should you.
4. Lubuntu Linux is probably best for new users.
5. How about all these computer scientists working for MS, CIA, NSA do the American citizens a favor and search tax code for “Exempt income means” and “Income that is not”? ECFR d ot g ov
WHAT IS TAXED d ot c om
Exactly when did the USA become the country where its government decided that it was a legitimate function of the State to hack into everyone’s software, email, data stored, etc. ? I don’t recall Al Gore mentioning that when he invented the Internet.
All of these continual revelations hardly generate a yawn from the Establishment media. Ho-hum, yes children, Big Brother is “protecting” you from Bad People.
So, laws against abortion are overturned because they “violate privacy.” Yet anyone’s search history and computer contents are not considered private enough to outlaw intelligence agents from diddling with your personal computer, tablet or cell phone. So other than abortions, what do the courts consider impermissible violations by the government of your privacy?
This is classic “frog in the pan, bring to slow boil” problem. Courts run by statist lawyers, who share the worship of the State disease. consider your constitutionally stated right to privacy a dead letter. See, with computers “it’s different.” National security and all. Since all telephones are now basically tools using computers, wiretapping laws are obsolete. Just ask Trump and his friends. Everything connected to, by or with a computer is fair game to Big Brother. State worshipping neocons and Brownshirt liberals all share this sick religion. Abortion is still legal, but otherwise, your privacy is a myth.
Hey, if you don’t like it here, you can always move to North Korea!
Ha, ha, finally…

sure thing.
and our objection to DPRK is that they have a controlled society where they guarantee HOUSING, FOOD, EDUCATION, and HEALTHCARE – all slife support functions. US wants to be control freaks without all the bennies.

Obama strikes again.
Lol, Windows. It comes backdoored, you don’t need any hacks to exploit it.
Pre-Internet, Windows users had to rely on time-consuming backup routines to minimise data loss from poor software reliability.
Enters NSA!
Voila, every interaction with the software becomes permanent. For example, emails you delete from Hotmail (or whatever it is called today) accounts are fully recoverable now.
It is poor imagination the think Microsoft suddenly became caring about customers and software efficiency.
Most likely, the most significant factor in the leap in efficiency came from NSA research into surveillance and data retention.
Apps in Windows 10 offer some options to turn surveillance off. The fine print says, when the option is turned off, an app ‘healthcheck’ report is still being sent home whether you like it or not.
Designing software with NSA-friendly backdoors, which are now obviously front doors, is a small token of appreciation that Microsoft bestows on NSA for bringing the company from the wilderness and turning into some kind of market leader.
Things change so fast in the cyberworld that these facts are already useless. Controlling systems and breaking through firewalls is like hearding cats.
If you buy Windows garbage, you deserve to be hacks.
Meh, not so much. The days of Apple crap being “immune” to malware are over.
The Deep State is now one of the most searched terms on Google and other search engines. Soon there will be projects, websites and such trying to map the Deep State.
Tools and information released by Wikileaks and other actors such as ShadowBrokers will facilitate the mapping process.

Windows 7 will be patched if it hasn’t been already. If you are still using XP or Vista, you’ll just have to call your momma on your flip phone and cry.
This is why I never accept windows updates. If your computer is running fine, don’t change anything. “If it isn’t broke, don’t fix it.”
That’s so incredibly stupid and misinformed, im going to assume you’re a troll and move on.
From the update:
Not necessarily. It means that Microsoft has built in a whole new set of backdoors for them. Once too many people start exploiting a security vulnerability, it loses its appeal. Everyone who partners with the NSA accepts that it’s necessary to continually create new ones as part of the cost of doing business. The NSA similarly accepts that it will have to update its exploits from time to time.
Backdoors have beem maliciously built into windows since 2000 Pro, at the behest of NSA, Homelamd Security, CIA, FBI, and whoever else. The fact our govt has been this suspicious and controlling of its people speaks to the need to cast off what has become tyranical. Sadly, only blood may win our freedom back…if it evet truly existed.
As security experts have said with regards to security backdoors (which these are in the end) – either everyone can be secure or everyone can be vulnerable (cause the vulnerabilities will get out one way or the other). This is also why the NSA shouldn’t be in charge of overseeing network / computer security…their own narrow interests of hoarding and using these puts the country’s security interest at risk – as demonstrated here.
Would have been nice if these had been passed to Microsoft ahead of time, but will be good to see these closed and this part of the U.S. attack surface closed.
Sam, any word on Linux or OS X exploits in the group?
These exploits have all been patched (although some quite recently).
False alarm – if you are patched.
https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=14119656
“people will be using these attacks for years to come.”
That’s bullshit and he knows it!
There will be patches and updates in no time at all that will prevent them from working.
Pauly, if every applied patches, then you’d be right – however alot of people don’t (for all kinds of reasons). You and I might be fine (if Microsoft actually patches them all quickly).
But once all this stuff is in the script kiddies realm (where it is on its way to), it’ll be folded into the used attacks and used for years to come…
Sam, the headline should read: US compromises world banking system. “Not threatening windows user. ”
You’re a vulgar propagandist not any better than Mickey.
The NSA has Raped the Fourth Amendment to death!
the internet has given power to individuals who otherwise lead powerless and meaningless lives. people who destructively hack into other people’s computers are a pathetic waste of a human life. I wish they could be shot like a typical home invader.

A Windows machine?
I would NOT touch one of those pieces of shit (they are not even good enough to be considered an ENTIRE one), or anything else that comes out of the Gates of Macroshit.
Billy Gates’ MicroCock WangBlows OS!
LOL True ‘nuf!
I agree.
Compromising computers is one thing. I’d like to know if the VPN system has been compromised by weak encryption or MITM attacks.
There are indications ISPs are throttling bandwidth on Torrent networks which means they have heuristic algorithms to detect Torrent downloads occurring through VPN encryption or they have weakened or broken VPN encryption.

“….Windows operating system earlier than the most recent Windows 10.”:
– you really made my day!
You need to take that with a grain of salt.
From the time these exploits were taken Windows 10 wasn’t really out much if at all. Many if not most of these exploits probably apply to 10 as well. The NSA descriptions just went up to Windows 8…because they were written earlier.
Yes! Switch to Windows 10 where the security holes are a fully integrated, factory installed feature of the operating system. Stop depending on overgrown infants living in their parents basement to compromise your security later. Get it compromised from the beginning, at the source!
This week Symantec reported – in one of its blogs – that they have identified some 40 attacks in 16 countries on governments and corporations, carried out by the CIA.

The scale might and probably is multiple times larger as the blog only draws on Symantec’s findings.
Maybe interesting for The Intercept to investigate who these targets where, if there are more and if it’s reasonable for the victims file charges.
Biddle is a Micro$oft plant. Don’t trust a word he says.
“Biddle is a Micro$oft plant. Don’t trust a word he says.”
As a named partner in Biddle, Bob, and Matty, he’s paid Macro$ for selling out his fellow citizens. They were called ‘Kapos’ in the camps.
I am not at a level in technology where I can really understand what this story & Wikileak’s disclosure of another unsafe trove of cyber-weapons could actually mean. As ignorant as I am, I can understand that no one can out spend and out manufacture the U$A’s war arsenal, but technology & the internet as it exists now, in a licentious dangerous world, will be the weapon that is chosen.
The gist is that the NSA (and also the CIA) sometimes find vulnerabilities in popular software. Instead of reporting those vulnerabilities to the software manufacturers (which would be the ethical thing to do) they keep them to themselves to exploit. That, of course, means that other actors — organized crime, governments — could also exploit those vulnerabilities. In short, the intelligence agencies see more value in acquiring offensive capabilities than in keeping software secure for the public at large.
Read their charter. “The public at large” is not in there. And would YOU install a patch from the CIA?
Thank you.
No operating system is secure. If they want to get you, they can and will.
Wrong. Good luck “getting” my offline OpenBSD box. It’s in a Faraday cage btw.

After several weeks of similar disclosures cover all other operating systems and most major software titles, which most were far more damning, it is the Windows Article that gets a headline on websites? Is this out of ignorance, or is this article intended to hurt readers/consumers and push them from the frying pan to the fire by building on past hyperbole of Windows security issues. Did Apple or Google sponsor this?
Where is the outrage about the OS X vulnerabilities, the Android vulnerabilities, the Linux exploits, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, and on and on…
I see people saying they are moving ‘back to Linux’. Really? When it is currently the most used OS for botnets and the current build/version is still easily exploitable?
We have been fighting man in the middle attacks all week using Linux distribution package updates, all trusted and installed with root privileges, and users not having a clue they were being infected.
I also see people say they will just use their phone, Android? An OS running on Linux that has a framework security model that makes DOS or Windows 3.1 look secure, even though they had NO security model. (facepalm)
An average this is more than 1 major remote or network (man in the middle) Android exploit or vulnerability found and exposed daily. All it will take is a couple of hackers that finally stop using Android to literally brick half a billion phones and tablet in less than a day.
After several weeks of similar disclosures, most far more damning, as they affect current versions, and people get stuck on the Windows article?
Where is the outrage about the OS X vulnerabilities, the Android vulnerabilities, the Linux exploits, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, and on and on…
The Windows stuff only works on a older version, the releases about OS X, Android, Linux, FreeBSD, and iOS work on CURRENT Versions.
I see people saying they are moving ‘back to Linux’. Really? When it is currently the most used OS for botnets and the current build/version is still easily exploitable?
Or I see people say they will just use their phone, Android? An OS that makes Windows 95 (which had NO security model) look good. There are more than 1 major remote Android exploit or vulnerability found or exposed daily.
As an OS engineer, let me make this clear… Right now, Windows is the best product for privacy and security. PERIOD.
There is a reason the DoD has been moving back to Windows, and to keep other agencies like the NSA out is one of them, as it is the only OS they can fully lock down.
As a security professional that is also an OS engineer, let me make this clear…
Right now, Windows is the best product for privacy and security. PERIOD.
The Windows architecture is fundamentally flawed. It is the only modern os that has a registry – this is a disasterous design dating back to windows 3.1 and indicates that Bill Gates and Co fundamentally did not understand computing architecture. The registry has proven to be a happy hunting ground for viruses, hacks, malware for literally decades.
The registry is not the single fundamental flaw in Windows. Registry is merely a consolidation of init files in a standard location and format that purportedly speed their execution and ability to update.
IMO the fundamental flaws in Windows are the (1) opacity of APIs, which are sometimes not completely divulged by MS even to developers (2) continued vulnerability of dynamically linked libraries (3) limits to introspection and possibilities of hidden processes.
But progress is being made with general methods of mitigation, such as here – https://www.eecis.udel.edu/~hnw/paper/icac16.pdf and for linux in particular with the grsec kernel & PAX.
“the future of radio belongs to us” indyradio.info –
or insecurely as ch0.us
as far as you can see, that is. Too much of the “failing pile of garbage” called Windows remains hidden, even for developers who pay for the privileges of accessing the APIs.
You don’t really know how secure Windows is, and won’t know unless they see 3 ghosts this Christmas and decide that Full Disclosure is the only form of disclosure that is ethical and ultimately useful.
I’m quite certain they want the status quo to remain – it makes them a ton of money.
a show-stopper in your post is the package upgrade “with root privileges” – there is NO OTHER WAY to install upgrades – on any OS –
I really don’t see how upgrading packages while under attack makes any sense. You’d want to do those off line, perhaps provide a decoy you could observe and debug, but first check your ssl/tls configuration – you may simply be open to an exploit that would be revealed in tests like this:
(server side — https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/analyze.html )
how do you you how you’re being MITM’ed?
go back to square one, and read the literature in general, not just the garbage
Microsoft sends you, then you might get a clue.
Anyone who uses Windows and seriously believes that not anything and everything on their system has been hacked is a fool.
Whatever was released today should not have come as a surprise to any thinking person.
I used to get very suspicious whenever the blue son of death (BSOD) screen came up. Now it’s quite clear. Someone across the ocean was hacking my accounts. The Germans always looked delinquent types although I must say they are very helpful people generally.
lol, anyone who’s ever (been forced to) use SAP knows they are a malicious bunch
I’ve never heard it referred to as the Blue Son Of Death!
It’s the Blue Screen Of Death.
A video of server 2008 being exploited huh? I’ve never seen a server 2008 build with XP’s GUI, that’s a new one.
FUZZBUNCH . . . a secret society of meterosexual cops
Not an ’80’s all girl punk band? Oh wait, that was Fuzzbox…

(If I remember right, the band was named after a guitar device.)
that, wawa pedals and tremelo bars
No Attorney Hennessey, the “immense harm” was not caused by leaking specifics of these 0-day attacks. It was caused by the NSA sitting on their discovery for who knows how long, instead of informing Microsoft so they could be defeated.
What you and so many bothers blithely ignore is that any number of other hacking entities may/could have found and been exploiting the same vulnerabilities against American interests.
This would be troubling if anyone important still ran Windows for any serious system.
Use Linux. Problem solved.
Leakers are Good. However, this was a criminal leak, and who is to say, the NSA did not leak this nasty crap. I would imagine it would spark sales for antivirus/firewall software. This was a criminal act (for informational news the program code should have been held back) by who ever is releasing these tools.
WikiLeaks published 676 source code files which it claimed are from CIA. It says the CIA disguised its own hacking attacks to make it appear those responsible were Russian, Chinese, Iranian or North Korean. In other words, the hacking claim against the Russians is a False Flag attack by the CIA. Obama, the CIA, the DNC, Europeans, etc. lost the Syrian Civil War because of Russia. Obviously, the DNC and their CIA/FBI goons and other government moles want Russia out of the way – along with Trump. ————-
SYRIA WAR is all about GAS & OIL. *** ”Syrian Rebels Used Sarin Nerve Gas, Not Assad’s Regime: U.N. Official” – By Shaun Waterman – The Washington Times – Monday, May 6, 2013***. “Testimony from victims strongly suggests it was the rebels, not the Syrian government, that used Sarin nerve gas during a recent incident in the revolution-wracked nation, a senior U.N. diplomat said Monday”. *** ———-
ALL WARS are about Power & Wealth. The Syrian civil war was started by a UN coalition of different nations against Russia. Russia supplies gas to Europeans. Russia threatened Europe in 2009 to cut off their winter gas over the disputes concerning Ukraine. The USA, Europeans, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar wanted to cut out Russian gas and send Saudi-Qatar gas to Europe. $$$ Billions to the boys involved in this venture, including Obama, Clintons, Bushs, DNC leaders, and other VIPs. Due to geology & politics, the gas pipelines are to go over Syria. You don’t believe it? LOOK AT THE MAPS. Web search: “saudi qatar pipeline map”. The Russians are fighting for their own economic interest in Syria.
Does not affect Windows 10 computers because the NSA already had their coding added to it by Microsoft so only they can hijack your system. If they don’t like your tweets and posts be prepared to have major connectivity issues and data corruption.
LOL…. as if Microsoft was unaware and did not disclose all these vulnerabilities to the NSA.
Justice Department…. Please don’t break up our Microsoft Company… we will tell you how you can break in illegally on all our users……
NSA …. OK spill your guts Gates.
Gladly but don’t break my company apart.
I’ve been thinking about going back to Debian anyway. My main Visual Studio project is close to completion and my BizSpark subscription is coming to an end.
Looks like QT and Python for development unless Mono is up and running.
You’re a fool if you believe they can’t and haven’t broken those already, and that the Chinese and Russians haven’t too.
LOL…. as if Microsoft doesn’t know and did not give the house away.
My job @ ocgeeker dot com just got a tad bit more difficult…
I would love to read this article, but it’s written by Sam Biddle – couldn’t he find another line of work after bullying people on Gawker?
Surprised theintercept would chose to limit their readership by putting somebody like that in the byline.
I suspect Gates wants to force everyone to purchase Windows 10.
Hey Mr. Biddle, some of us actually know WTF is going on. This story is really bad. Why? Microsoft gave them the backdoor intentionally or should I say the gov’t asked for a backdoor and MS said, sure no problem at all. Give me a break. Oh and way to upsell Windows 10. That piece of crap isn’t going anywhere near any of my computers. So it just happens that windows 10 is not affected by this huh…wow. What a relief, I better upgrade now. Windows 10 is sooooo safe. Next thing you will be telling me is that Ms. Piggy is my real mom.
Why you say all pre Win10 systems at risk? Other sources disagree!
Hacker Fantastic? @hackerfantastic says
EMERALDTHREAD is an exploit (unpatched?) for Windows XP to Windows 2003 SP2.
and
The Windows folder holds many hacking tools against Windows operating system, but works against only older version of Windows (Windows XP) and Server 2003, according to researchers.

Another little gift from Obama and his worthless regime. He wanted people spied on so he and his party could attack, lie and smear those that only want to make the country better unlike Obama and his want to destroy this country once and for all. The NSA is still ran by his subjects and his shadow government that were more invested in spying on Americans and Political foes then going after the real enemies of this country while he gave them info on us and money to buy parts for their weapons. Carter gave us North Korea and now Obama has given us Iran. Both of these hate America liberals are the gift that keep on giving, if you anti America !!!!!!!!!!!
Commercially available Windows threatens Windows’ users around the world
Time to switch to Linux.
Maybe it will be used to bring down a couple of them UFO’s I keep hearing about. Me and Eric Heisman was down in Mexico two weeks ago and we seen forty of ’em flying in formation. They’ve got bases all over the world now, you know. They’ve been coming here ever since nineteen forty-six – when the scientists first started bouncin’ radar beams off of the moon. And they have been livin’ and workin’ among us in vast quantities ever since. The government knows all about ’em. They are people, just like us – from within our own solar system. Except that their society is more highly evolved. I mean, they don’t have no wars, they got no monetary system, they don’t have any leaders, because, I mean, each man is a leader. I mean, each man – because of their technology, they are able to feed, clothe, house, and transport themselves equally – and with no effort…They don’t reveal themselves to us is because if they did it would cause a general panic. Now, I mean, we still have leaders upon whom we rely for the release of this information. These leaders have decided to repress this information because of the tremendous shock that it would cause to our antiquated systems. Now, the result of this has been that the Venutians have contacted people in all walks of life. Yes. It would be a devastatin’ blow to our antiquated systems – so now the Venutians are meeting with people in all walks of life – in an advisory capacity. For once man will have a god-like control over his own destiny. He will have a chance to transcend and to evolve with some equality for all.
LOL Windows users’ data is an open book for spooks. Did you know that Windows is tested in Taiwan meaning that Chinese hackers get zero-day bug reports before anyone else?
Its people like Greenwald that are encouraging these kinds of leaks. The government has fighter jets with laser guided bombs but you aren’t worried about them turning your house into a pile of rubble are you? No, of course not! You hypocrites need to grow up. Greenwald and his gang of fools are a greater threat to all of you than NSA malware.
Greenwald has a gang?
Yes, they’re called the majority of internet trolls. It’s unbearable what this guy is doing, without ownership or accountability for his biased non-journalism of, basically, being a PR mouthpiece for idiots.
LOL.
Yeah, he’s in one of those gangs in West Side Story where all the rumbles are performed through dance.
Cognitive dissonance is dissonant…
If … nay, WHEN U.S. bombs fall into the hands of ISIS (as they did in Mosul when the Iraqi Army ran away) they are very powerful, but they come in a limited number.
But when U.S. agencies pay for hacks, which are submitted by hackers that may well have paid developers at the companies to put those vulnerabilities in, those hacks can be used against one computer or ten million. There’s no limit to the damage that can be done by the enemy when they get ahold of the technology.
And the habit of the U.S. of simply gathering holes, without formally making them back doors that check back with the NSA before they decide whether to work, means that any random hacker can stumble across them and use them at any time anyway. So as insecure as the munitions in Iraq were, these munitions are just scattered around the desert and anyone who rides around a lot on a camel can find some and use them.
The proper role of U.S. security agencies — is SECURITY. I mean, certifying absolutely hack proof systems and responding quickly to any vulnerability as a national interest. They should be out there looking for any bug in a U.S. manufactured system not to hoard it but to have it plugged immediately. They should actually be driving an improved trade balance because people would say “hey, equipment from the U.S. may be pricey but you can surf any site you ever heard of with it and you’ll never have to worry about hacking or surveillance”. They are not merely abusing the public with the wrong actions, but failing national priorities by not taking the right approach.
Brandon my lowbrow friend. You just HAD to comment despite being absolutely clueless, huh?
Greenwald is not mentioned in the article, why are you injecting him into this?
Brandon, anyone with half a brain is worried about exactly that. But they won’t need planes, just your neighborhood police drone, already armed with “surplus” military missiles,
Thanks to omnipresent software hacking, “the government” will know exactly where you are and even what you had for dinner.
If they want, they will disable your car brakes, making your “accident” happen. Or plant child porno on your PC and bust you for it. Hey, what world do you live in?
Of course, those who love Big Brother are often his first victims.
The tin had brigade is out in force. You guys need to get out more. Read more. Experience more.
Here’s something for you, brainiac: check out William Binney, J. Kirk Wiebe, and Tom Drake on YouTube and elsewhere. Take a couple of hours or several to educate yourself on just how much NSA can do through your false sense of security.
There is virtually nothing, no algorithm, no firewall, no encryption that they can’t get into or indeed haven’t already hacked.
It is FAR worse and more advanced than this article has even hinted at.
I suppose they WON’T be patching for my XP laptop. dang. Firefox won’t be supporting that version either. Dang dang..
Install Linux. It’s safe, fast and free!
Go back to Win 3.1 or 95. Nobody writes hacks for those anymore!
Microsoft stopped offering patches and support for XP in April of 2014… support for Vista ends this year (this month I believe)… support for Win7 ends in 2020. Seriously folks, just update your OS already.
I highly recommend using Linux instead of an ancient version of Windows. Nobody writes malware for Linux.
please don’t try to tell me that Linux (in it’s various distros) has no weaknesses that can be exploited – they’re just less likely to be neatly packaged – in part because the installed base is many times smaller than WIN or OSX — a list was found in the last shadowbrokers file of machines running Solaris implanted by the NSA – it’s not the only UNIX/LINUX system they compromise
why has not the so-called 911 investigation committee publish the phone number list of the crash teams? how, carrier pidgeon?
Why does this read like a Tom Clancy styled promo for Windows 10?
And doesn’t this just make you feel so safe about the “Cloud”?
Naw, nobody could ever hack the “Cloud”. Impossible. Trust me, nothing can go wrong……..go wrong………..go wrong…………..go wrong ………go wrong……..go wrong………..go wrong…………..go wrong ………go wrong……..go wrong………..go wrong…………..go wrong ………
My thoughts exactly! A Microsoft advertisement in the form of fake news. Hurry up and buy Windows 10 before you get hacked! And I don’t know why anyone would put all their info in the “Cloud” where it is completely vulnerable. What are people thinking?
“At the outset of the NT project, [Dave] Cutler treated security as an afterthought, another item on a long list of features… [Jim Kelly]: ‘Security was a Johnny-come-lately to NT.'”
[Dave], at this point, I think that we can agree this was a mistake.
(Quote above from G. Pascal Zachary’s book: Show-stopper! The breakneck race to create Windows NT and the next generation at Microsoft [p. 144])
Wow, that badly edited quote is way out of context.
If you think security wasn’t a cornerstone of NT, you don’t understand NT or OS architectures. In 1992 NT surpasses all other OS technologies in security, with even intercommunication and kernel level processes requiring security tokens as well as a robust ACL system built on top of the token security object model.
When NT 3.1 released it was C2 certified, and even today Windows 7/8/10 maintains security certifications that Linux, OpenBSD, OS X have never obtained.
There is a reason the DoD started moving back to Windows fully, and it has to do with the NSA, anyone interested can go look it up.
yes, NT was good, and was the core of subsequent systems other than 95 – this was because MS bought out the lead programmer from DEC.
The GUI added in NT4 and later, compromises made for the sake of multimedia degraded security OTB, but you could set a policy to tighten it.
WIN7 brought in some linux/unix concepts and then MS began insisting more and more control over the identity of the purchaser. System security depends ultimately upon the practices of the user – a Linux user has a wider variety of options, and nothing is hidden behind a proprietary veil to the extent you stay with choices similar to those of Richard Stallman fsf.org
The ‘D’ in DOS stands for ‘dirty'; it came from the original Quick and Dirty Operating System (QDOS).
Windows has always been an abortion resurrected; Happy Easter from Bill Gates.
If you have read, Lenovo has been caught installing spyware onto their devices for 3 times, and the pentagon said to avoid them. If you think about it, if Lenovo (A major Chinese tech company) may take the malware, and then give it to the Chinese military and spy agency.
I’ve heard little ducks fart underwater before.
All Hail Bob!
dont ever leave your pc hooked up to the internet when not in use.
Better unplug your WiFi, router, and cable modem also. All of these devices are running software with CPUs that are known quite well to the exploit community.
Just look at Project Zero’s work with Broadcom WiFi.
Understand that Microsoft intentionally GAVE the Federal Government this capability. And they are unlikely to “fix” the problem until they provide another backdoor to the Feds to make up for losing these.
And that, dear friends, sums it up nicely in one short sentence.
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/jul/11/microsoft-nsa-collaboration-user-data
Doesnt affect Windows 10. Man they are real desperate for everyone to go to windows 10.
Yup! Wasn’t that just convenient that we have Windows 10 now to save the day? And such fortunate timing too. Boy! We sure dodged a bullet with that one.
If hackers want to actually be helpful, find a way to install DirectX 12 onto Windows 7 so that it works flawlessly and then take over the OS plumbing so that not a single hacker, government agency anywhere, nor Microsoft can get in. At this point, who are you going to put your trust in? The old joke was if you don’t like cops the next time you need help call a hippie. Well, now who do you call when the cyber cops are pulling stunts like this? Ghost Busters? Whomever it is you’ll call for actual help, they surely aren’t located in Redmond, WA.
Right, and how do we know it doesn’t affect Windows 10 also? They had us believing the other versions weren’t affected and look what happened.
“At midnight tonight, this Senate will make one of the biggest mistakes in surveillance policy in years and years. Without a single congressional hearing, without a shred of meaningful public input, without any opportunity for senators to ask their questions in a public forum, one judge with one warrant would be able to authorize the hacking of thousands, possibly millions of [innocent user’s] devices, cell phones and tablets.”
Rule 41. Dec 1, 2016.

of course these tools dont affect W10?
nsa and cia dont neeeeeeeed any hackyware for W10.
” Microsoft Admits Windows 10 Auto-Spying Can’t Be Disabled … Much has been made about NSA spying and bulk data collection of American ..”
http://21stcenturywire.com/2015/11/04/nsa-partner-in-crime-microsoft-admits-windows-10-auto-spying-cant-be-disabled
These hacking-tools – e.g. this information – all predate(s) Windows 10….
LMAO, sheeples. Nothing more than BS media drama……
Why are you all posting here on the Intercept?
Everybody else is downloading the NSA SWIFT hacking tools.
FREE MONEY!
You mean to tell me I can get online right now, download NSA SWIFT hacking tools and then GET FREE MONEY?!?!?!
It is illegal to have an “unauthorized access device” on your computer. Where “unauthorized access device” can be something as simple as a credit card number or even a phone number.
It’s like being caught with a set of lock picks. Be chary.
Our government at work. Someone needs to be Hung and in public. So when i go to work Monday what do i use to look for the NSA schit? I expect the fix is known but not for the little people.
That’s what the whole big push for free Windows 10 for Windows 7 and 8 users was all about. Between easily hackable cloud services and being able to seize control of any citizens electronic devices has 4th amendment violation written all over it. And you can be sure it was the Obama administration and Bill Gates that pushed for this.
MEGA UP VOTE!
Wow, Sam doing advertising for Microsoft now, upgrade to Windows 10 and you will be safe, yeah sure, pull the other leg.
Exactly.
UP VOTE! :o)
Screw that! I’m upgrading to Linux!
when will be the day these morons spooks stop messing around with our lives?? enough is enough!!
“when will be the day…?”
“and how we burned in the camps…”
PS – – Greenwald he still loves him the jihadis.
Will MS offer patch for out of service software like Server 08 or XP? or are we just screwed?
Why on earth would Microsoft offer a patch for out-of-service software?
That’s part of the reason it’s out of service – it’s too old and obsolete to fix.
– Edward Snowden on Twitter, linking to this from Empty Wheel:
The Shadow Brokers Vulnerability Equities Process: NSA Has Had at Least 96 Days to Warn Microsoft about These Files
Lately, I keep getting a pop up in bottom right corner that says;
Windows *
Build ****
This copy of windows is not genuine
* just lucky I guess.
You mean someone can write a program to “infect” a computer that runs the Windows Operating System?
“It’s the end of the world!”
I guess Microsoft is going to have to consider closing the back doors that they’ve allowed the NSA to build into their OS. I wish some of the production software I use would natively support Linux as I’d love to finally, fully abandon MS products in favor of open source solutions.
For all those who haven’t yet been schooled in the art of Capitalism and The Big Lie, what this article really means to say is that Bill Gates just isn’t rich enough yet and wants all of you cheap lazybones to upgrade to Windows 10 NOW!
I would guess a fair amount of Gates’ money came from the NSA and CIA to put these back doors in Windows.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NSAKEY
Huge corporations working closely with massive secretive government agencies is not capitalism. Not even close.
For those who haven’t been schooled in the products of leftist policy and the global hidden agenda, what WagTheDog really means to say is he wants everyone to focus on the “evil rich guy” rather than the massive overbloated extremely powerful government that was pulling all the strings here, including Gates’.
Because, you know. The government is your friend! Protects you from ebbil rich guys!
Should be a class action law suit for the crappy products produced to run & protect our electronic gizmos. Reminds me of the record albums from the past, that might have one good song on it & the rest, garbage.
No really big surprise here because virus’s have been written by companies who make anti virus software since their interception. People have to buy your product then. Especially if the virus is tailor made where only your software will fix it.
The Right wants less government regulation. With less regulation you end up with Wells Fargo charging customers for fictitious accounts and United Airlines beating up paying passengers who refuse to leave the plane because United overbooked.
The Left wants more government, which is already unaccountable, unmanageable and out of control and leads to the NSA doing crap like this.
Neither ideology seems like they have the best interests of average people at heart.
Huh? The Right wants law and order. The Wells Fargo thieves broke the law, and so did United and their three violent thugs. These laws and many other good ones have long been on the books, and the Right has no desire to add to them to further limit our freedom.
It’s the Left who is the fascist entity and wants to CONTROL every facet of our lives, essentially enslaving us. They want our guns, our money, and our lives, and most of the laws since 22 Nov 63 have been aimed directly at those conclusions.
WangTheDog, LOL !!, yeah, just look at how Bushes man Henry Paulson used all those laws to go after the crooked bankers, rather than extort Congress to cover their asses with tax payer $ !! Where does the right get this stuff ?? They are as bad or worse than the left, it is very hard to tell.
Not sure I can agree. Regulations are the reason the guy was dragged off a jet by uniformed officers
they broke regulations when they did that. and laws. and their contract.
let’s be real clear about this matter
1. If a passenger who bought and paid for transport refuses to be bullied out of his seat because of a fine print contractual relationship, the dumbazzes at united airlines can SUE him. The police are NOT the enforcers for dumbazz united airlines retail contracts.
2. Uniformed officer? right. had a one week course on how to force compliance with personal orders – like unleashing a pit bull.
3. Regulations? According to the pimped out whores in US congress, they can get Americans killed in an illegal war and the family cannot even sue these turds.
4. He wasnt just dragged off against his will, he lost 2 teeth, broken nose and a concussion. THAT’S WHAT NETANYAHU DOES TO PALESTINIANS!
Use Windoze at your own risk. Mac isn’t much better, either and Linux may have an issue with the kernal. Strange days!
I’m running Windows/95, but now with this NSA news I’m going back to MS-DOS.
The Obama NSA is still wreaking havoc.
This actually smells like Microsoft itself. Weird how it doesn’t attack Win 10 users. I had read something before where Microsoft wanted people to use Win 10. So maybe they are just forcing ppl to change over to Win 10.
ya think?
i am convinced that the Winny eula has in it somewhere a link to a link to a link to a link where it says “we can screw you any which way but loose, and your spouse too.”
in that EULA you might find forced arbitration, confession of judgment, a class action waiver, and other clauses that may or may not hold up in court, but that’s up to your lawyer to sort out. Should you take action and lose, there’s also a cost of litigation clause – you agree to pay any costs Microsoft incurs. it might briefly read
“You’ve been screwed” Thank you for your purchase.
Indyradio.info
Sounds more like forces are working to funnel MSFT users to W10, which is a totally compromised OS. Ya think the DOJ dropped the suit against MSFT without a little quid pro quo? Not on your tintype, girly, girl. GOOG and MSFT are really just arms of US ‘law’ agencies.
Time to get a Chromebook.
Right, give Google and the NSA more reason to spy on us. LOL
Stop using windows.

Unfortunately a lot of useful software doesn’t run on Linux. AutoCAD, Photoshop to name two that would affect my livelihood. With that said, CATIA, Blender, and GIMP all have native Linux versions.
I guess most people could get away with running Linux, but power users would need to run VirtualBox or similar VM software to run certain apps.
As a caveat, I do run Ubuntu on most of my PCs.
Microsoft comes out the winner.
“The software could give nearly anyone with sufficient technical knowledge the ability to wreak havoc on millions of Microsoft users.”
Microsoft responded saying, “This is outrageous, wreaking havoc on Microsoft users is our job.”
LoLs. True story.
What the media and certainly not the tech companies will share is that every major tech company, including isps, credit card companies, banks, telcos, etc, etc, cooperate fully with US intelligence agencies. NSA has all the technical assistance they require when developing malware. There is little doubt that Microsoft has an entire department dedicated to assisting NSA, CIA etc.
OBVIOUSLY, a concerned functional adult would want to use an unpopular, ‘different’ type of OS and browser. Having “most” using the same software tools makes intrusion so much easier. The “best” (as in secure) OS and browser would/should use logic that DIFFERS from the “standard fare”.
“The software could give nearly anyone with sufficient technical knowledge the ability to wreak havoc on millions of Microsoft users.”
These criminals are equipping other criminals to commit acts of domestic sabotage. They are a clear and present danger and should be prosecuted as such.
Stop spinning the truth, you toolbox. The criminals implanted the firmware from factory, in collusion with criminal government agencies. And dont believe its only prior to w10… Do you think Microsoft, Apple, Google have had some recent crisis on conscience or something? Get real.
This just shows the government, rather than being engaged in protecting us from others who’d harm us, prefers the ability to harm us. An ability it already has via its monopoly on the use of force via the various local, state and federal police forces.
This needs to stop.
It won’t
For those who see conspiracies everywhere, is this a correlation between Microsoft and the NSA to force you to upgrade to Windows 10?
Love your “nom de guerre” – an Islamic Jew! What are the chances that it’s a dodge?
NSA has better things to do … it’s all Microsoft.
My exact thoughts exactly.
My thoughts exactly.
No — it’s collusion between Microsoft and the NSA to spy on as many potential targets as possible.
Almost exactly my exact thoughts, exactly.
one big scare infomercial
Thank you Gov very little – oh BTW Hitlery’s servers are secure – WTF
Most of these are against webservers, not against your personal computer.

Those that have any understanding of ongoing government programs, understand that privacy no longer exists and has not existed for many, many years. This pertains not only to the OS you’re running, but your ISP connection, routers, cell and land line phones and now, the smart vehicle you are driving.
You have to assume that all devices are tapped. All information is available, including every key stroke, the places you visit, the conversation you have in email, text, posts and on your telephone. Everything is being recorded for posterity.
The only thing about this “news” that is new, is that its being reported on a public forum with mass exposure.
Are we not due damages?
ASIA FOR THE ASIANS, AFRICA FOR THE AFRICANS, WHITE COUNTRIES FOR EVERYBODY!
Everybody says there is this RACE problem. Everybody says this RACE problem will be solved when the third world pours into EVERY white country and ONLY into white countries.
The Netherlands and Belgium are just as crowded as Japan or Taiwan, but nobody says Japan or Taiwan will solve this RACE problem by bringing in millions of third worlders and quote assimilating unquote with them.
Everybody says the final solution to this RACE problem is for EVERY white country and ONLY white countries to “assimilate,” i.e., intermarry, with all those non-whites.
What if I said there was this RACE problem and this RACE problem would be solved only if hundreds of millions of non-blacks were brought into EVERY black country and ONLY into black countries?
How long would it take anyone to realize I’m not talking about a RACE problem. I am talking about the final solution to the BLACK problem?
And how long would it take any sane black man to notice this and what kind of psycho black man wouldn’t object to this?
But if I tell that obvious truth about the ongoing program of genocide against my race, the white race, Liberals and respectable conservatives agree that I am a naziwhowantstokillsixmillionjews.
They say they are anti-racist. What they are is anti-white.
Anti-racist is a code word for anti-white.
OK, half of my comments disappear into the netherworld for days, and this fuck crazy racist screed flies right under the ol’ comment radar? Seriously, I can do some mod work for you guys, cheap, just email me….
You could report it. There are no actual moderators here, but the account that responds from the email given in the commenting guidelines sometimes gets on racist shit.
BTW, your comments prolly are not “disappearing” — many will initially show up only if you read comments in “Latest” rather than in “Threads.” It’s happeneing to many of us, and no one has the first fucking clue why — it seems wholly random.
And these people think they’ve hacked into 60% of the world’s Windows systems? Biggest laugh of the year!
Yeah, I noticed they do eventually show up, just bitching, frankly. I didn’t know how to report stuff, now I do, thanks.
You just need to hit CTRL-F5 after posting – clears page cache data and reloads.
He has a point. I dig ethnic chick’s though.
Me too! My 35 years as a System Programmer includes 3 years at No Such Agency, so I’m sure I could clean up your code.
Fucking top tier troll
I TRULY WISH that you were not right, BUT my brain refuses to cooperate – I MUST be a “deplrable”!
Don’t be so daft. It’s about CULTURE, not race. There’s a reason why Europe was able to integrate huge numbers of Turkish migrants with no problem but the Syrian immigrants have been problematic in spite of them being racially identical.
Africa for the Africans? Explain South Africa…
Nothing he said is racist. You are the racist for wanting to exterminate the white race and attacking anyone who opposes your genocidal plot. You cant deny anything he said becuase, its all true. You know its true, and you think the world has a “white problem” and we all need to support the genocide against white nations.
i know microsoft wants me to use 10, but this could be legit too. don’t know what to believe.
I resisted for the longest time before finally installing Win10.
Thinking back now, it almost seems silly that I waited so long!
Was finally able to uninstall the 3rd party Virus software that slowed down my pc considerably!
Take the plunge, there’s nothing to fear!
“My off-the-cuff guess is that the CIA AND NSA WANT YOU TO USE WINDOWS 10.”
I am sure it streamlines things immensely when everyone is using the same corrupt-from-the-factory OS.
I bet they are tired of having contractors presort data; if it’s presorted at collection, why, think of the savings …
My thoughts exactly. I remember Microsoft begging me to upgrade to Windows 10 for free. Doesn’t make sense unless you look at it from this perspective.
It’s still free, the supposed cut off date was fiction.
presorted AND profiled
no doubt about it
I was wondering is this wasn’t some kind of ruse as well.
It’s headlined on Drudge in the ravishing RED.
That’s a lot of his audience.
You could be right.
i am perty sher of it ;-)
Not needing a “health check” frequently sent out from my computer, I securely removed all traces of WIN10 from my new machine then formated the hard drive before using it. Giving out my phone number, DOB, blood and urine samples is a steep price to pay, IMO, regardless of the merit of the product.
We shouldn’t let the state write malware in the first place! This is unbelievable…
Yes, I would think some blame would go to those who built the super dangerous bomb, failed to keep it secure, and then refused to act to mitigate its effects when warned that it had been stolen and would be used (and no blackmail, etc., to argue that they shouldn’t mitigate). Because, of course, they didn’t want to give up their beautiful tool. Maybe Microsoft will sue the NSA for building an illegal tool to attack their software… bwa ha ha! Also, was it really necessary to provide free advertising for ‘Hacker House’? They clearly stand to profit from this, as they clearly are not really ‘hackers’, it’s a cybersecurity firm. Ching ching ching!!!
